The Martian

Dear Sock - The comparison is perfectly legitimate. I have no idea why you would think otherwise. However, I hesitate getting into a squabble with you. If you were kind and open-minded, you would undo your deletion of the quoted material I inserted.Tatami67239mypacks (talk) 23:00, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

@Tatami67239mypacks: I am not being unkind nor close-minded, I'm confused as to how a quote about a film (that is not The Martian) which was published in 2004 (eleven years before the film is in question is pertinent. The criticism is aimed at a specific film's depiction of Mars, and using a quote criticizing one film and portraying it as a criticism of another is a misrepresentation of the author's material and their intent. Question about title formatting

Hi there, I was just wondering if you could tell me about title formatting.

If song and band titles are written in one word, do we write it as one word or written as it should be? Example should it be Blessthefall (band) or Bless the Fall? Should it "Ishookhandswithdeath" (song) or "I Shook Hands with Death"? Thanks. --2001:8003:32A5:7700:31A3:3B07:2B16:8835 (talk) 02:43, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

@2001:8003:32A5:7700:31A3:3B07:2B16:8835: This is a pretty great question. WP:NCM would traditionally have that info, but I don't see it in there. The closest note I can see is for trademarks (MOS:TMRULES), where LittleBigPlanet is written as one word. I think the difference is that, for the band, the spelling is marketing and branded, while a song title is considered stylization with less importance on stranger spellings. Might be worth taking to WT:ALBUMS. Sock (tock talk) 22:31, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

@TheAmazingPeanuts: I actually think they're correct, or as correct as they can be at the moment. The Tidal credits are very bizarrely inserted, where it only says "assistant engineer" for everyone but then erroneously includes them as "mixing" or "recording" engineers sporadically. I think we'd need a physical copy to really verify them. Sock (tock talk) 22:10, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

Gorillaz wiki edit?

Hey there! Hope you've had a nice week :)

I hope this isn't a bother, but I saw you changed my Cass Browne edit on the Gorillaz page? I know you said he was only a member of the live band but this isn't the case haha- he wrote all the band members for over a decade.

I can send you proof if need be? I don't mean to sound pretentious or anything, I just wish he got more credit for his work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frootybanana (talkcontribs) 04:34, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Be that as it may, Browne was never listed as or reported to be an official member of the project anywhere that I could find. A collaborator, absolutely, but Remi Kabaka was a collaborator for over a decade before being listed as an official member only recently. Gorillaz, for the vast majority of their career, was Albarn and Hewlett (officially, at least). If there's a source that says Browne was an official member at any point, I'll gladly support his inclusion. Adding external sources for track listings and personnel sections

Hi. Just letting you know, track listing and personnel don't need to have an external source per MOS:ALBUM, as the album itself is considered the source for this material, and other editors have considered it inappropriate to link to sources selling the album, almost as if this is some endorsement (I don't necessarily agree, just letting you know that argument has been floated). While in a way it's good that you're citing a source in general, unless the material is contentious, like a sample or a credit that hasn't been provided in all places, there's no need to provide a Tidal link for the sections. Also, using small templates to decrease the size of track notes in personnel sections is now being considered an overuse or misuse of small font per MOS:SMALL. I don't know if you've seen, but I've noticed several editors removing small text in sections after you've added it. Ss112 18:42, 13 May 2021 (UTC)

@Ss112: I was out of the loop on both of those things! Thank you for bringing it to my attention, I'll make sure to adjust my process when I do credits in the future. My concern was always if the Tidal credits didn't match the liner notes (which I also source if I own a physical copy of the album) so any errors could be explained through that, but I get you. Thank you again! Sock (tock talk) 12:19, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
Hello again. I just noticed you're still sourcing personnel sections to sites like Tidal. Again, I do get that you essentially want to tell other users where you got the credits from and not look like you're "adding unsourced material", but per MOS:ALBUM you aren't and don't need to for this. Ss112 14:06, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

Oh lord, I fell back into it out of old habit. Gonna put a reminder somewhere so I don't do it anymore. Thank you again (again)! Sock (tock talk) 14:13, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

"Not x date yet"

Hi. Regarding your edit to Rock Believer several days ago, you might not be aware or have seen MetalDiablo666's edit summary after yours, but we don't have to wait until it's midnight in the US until we can change something. Wikipedia is not US-centric (Scorpions are a German band anyway), and thus one time zone is as valid as the next. MetalDiablo666 was right when they said "Wikipedia isn't based on just nationality, territories, continents, etc"—if an album has been released somewhere in the world (like where, based on the time, it is the next day already), Wikipedia can be updated to say it has been released. By the time of your edit, the album was out in New Zealand, Australia and most of Asia. Thanks. Ss112 03:26, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

@Ss112 I did not see that edit summary and that was a clear mistake on my part, apologies for that. I would like to note that I agree with that edit summary, but this comment comes across extremely condescending, and I would appreciate if you gave me a chance to respond to you before talking to me like I've never edited Wikipedia before. Thanks. Sock (tock talk) 03:35, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
@Ss112 Upon looking through my talk page in general, there are a lot of messages from you that feel like I'm being treated in bad faith. Please try to keep in mind that I'm here to help, just like you are. Sock (tock talk) 03:37, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
I'm not speaking to you like you've "never edited Wikipedia before". I'm sorry you feel that way, but I'm simply explaining something based on what you said. It's not an assumption of bad faith. Even if somebody were to be changing text because an album "hasn't been released yet", I would strongly disagree but wouldn't think they were trying to "ruin" Wikipedia. As for your follow-up message, I don't think I've left very many talk page messages for you at all. Looking through my contributions here, my only messages prior to this thread were asking you to not collapse content on articles (because you did, and obviously did not know that it should not be done)—that's not me thinking you were editing in bad faith. Then my most recent thread above, which I added to twice, which was letting you know we shouldn't link to streaming services as sources for credits and then the guidelines around when to use div col. Both of these were because you were still making edits to the contrary, and I was letting you and then reminding you. Neither were an assumption of bad faith. You can feel you're being treated in bad faith but I assure you you're not. Ss112 15:09, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Tidal Issue

Its original research to assume that because Tidal calls Keith Sorrells and Alex Nice producers and co-producers, that they should be listed as either. As such, I've changed the credits to read that they are credited as both. Its an assumption to list as either since we have no sources to say either way otherwise. Also note per WP:BRD, once you've been reverted, you should discuss on the talkpage rather than adding something back in regardless of whether you think you're right or not. I've compromised since we're not sure either way. 19:47, 29 August 2022 (UTC) >> Lil-unique1 (talk)19:47, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

@Lil-unique1: I re-instated the change as my information came directly from Tidal, and I believed you were mistaken. That said, I do not believe my change was a "bold" edit, so I don't see how BRD applies to this situation at all. I abided by WP:3RR and did not revert a third time because I realized more discussion was needed.
I have just posted a message on the WT:ALBUMS talk page to discuss this more broadly and get a consensus from that WikiProject. You made a good point in your second reply, which I addressed in that message. I'd love to hear your input in that discussion. Sock (tock talk) 20:00, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Mata

Hi there, just a quick question - could you confirm what the source is for Mata (album)#Personnel? I'm hoping to start working the article up to GA/FAC status as I did with all her previous albums, so the section will definitely need a source. Thanks! -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 16:34, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

@ChrisTheDude Hello! I got the information from the Tidal credits for Mata at this link, but you actually shouldn't need to cite that per WP:PERSONNEL: "Similar to the track listing requirements, it is generally assumed that a personnel section is sourced from the liner notes. In some cases, it will be necessary to use third-party sources to include performers who are not credited in the liner notes." Since the credits on streaming services are provided by the artist or their label, they are usually considered equivalent to the liner notes.
Good luck on the article! Sock (tock talk) 17:15, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

Track list template

Sock, I don't personally change numbered lists to track listing templates so I don't appreciate or agree when users do the reverse. Some users like it, some don't. I personally prefer it, and I think WP:RETAIN applies if nothing else. WP:TRACKLIST doesn't advocate for changing uses of the template to a numbered list, only the reverse—it says consider using the template if there are more details to list. It's a misinterpretation, at least to me, to say that the opposite must also be true because it says track lists "should generally be formatted as a numbered list". The album style guide was written before the track listing template existed and that text was not altered upon its creation, probably because its creator didn't intend for the template to be the default way to format a track listing, just an option. Ultimately it's up to the creator of the article whichever they use, and any changes should be discussed, at the very least if they are reverted. Ss112 07:24, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

@Ss112 I didn't restore the change after it was reverted, and if I were really married to changing it I would've started a discussion rather than starting an edit war. I'm confused by what that last comment had to do with anything.
My mistake on the rest, and I think your interpretation of WP:TRACKLIST makes sense and is one I'll adopt going forward. This was the first time I've ever changed a template to a numbered list, so I guess I know not to do that in future. Sock (tock talk) 10:58, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Your signature

Hello! I was wondering if you would be willing to increase the color contrast in your signature? The current shade of pink has a contrast level of 3.13 against white, which is less than the minimum under MOS:COLOR (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines AA level, which in this case calls for a contrast of at least 4.5; the optional but ideal AAA level calls for 7.0). There are myriad ways this could be fixed, from using a darker shade of pink to adding a dark highlight to the current shade of pink – or something else entirely. Best, HouseBlastertalk 01:31, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

@HouseBlaster: Just changed it to a colour with a contrast level of 7.02. I can't thank you enough for letting me know! Hello Sock I've been trying to put together a Community (TV series) task force as a part of WP:TV and seeing as you were the crator of Abed Nadir I thought you might have some intrest. Questions? four Olifanofmrtennant (she/her) 04:07, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for reaching out! I actually only created Abed Nadir as a redirect. The credit for fleshing that article out belongs to Phys Ed, who appears to be sporadically active so it might be worth reaching out to them. I largely traffic in music and film articles so I'm afraid I'll have to decline, but I wish you the best of luck! Sock (tock talk) 18:09, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

TFL notification

Hi, Sock. I'm just posting to let you know that List of accolades received by Her (film) – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been chosen to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured list for December 18. The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 22:38, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

How exciting! Blurb looks great and I'm excited to see it on the front page for the tenth anniversary. Thanks for the heads up! Sock (tock talk) 18:10, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello there. Would you like to take a look at the recent discussion for track listing template? If you have time, your comments are always appreciated. 2001:D08:2923:E51E:17AB:A910:EFB:26 (talk) 05:41, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

Re: Meg Ryan/legal name

Just a quick note, I believe you meant to refer me to MOS:PSEUDONYM and not WP:PSEUDONYM! Once I figured that out, I agree with you. Just in case it should come up again (possibly even with me, as I am quite forgetful!). Cheers. Dumuzid (talk) 19:27, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

LOL you are absolutely right, I always get those two mixed up and definitely meant to link the MOS page. Thank you for looking into that and understanding where I was coming from! Sock (tock talk) 19:32, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to join New pages patrol

Hello Sock!

  • The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.

  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Did something funny happen?

As always, I appreciate your edits and you're a helpful colleague, but did you make some kind of mistake or have a weird issue happen here? What is this "Ahhhh My Name Is Jeff" stuff? I removed it as I'm assuming that it's a bizarre copy/paste error or (God forbid) a medical issue--you're not a vandal, so I wanted to reach out. Also, please note that I have a 0-RR restriction, so any time I remove anything, I try to do outreach to ensure that this is proper and I'm not trying to engage in edit-warring. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 19:25, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

@Koavf: Well, that's certainly one of my more embarrassing gaffes. I'd made a mock track listing template with junk data to refresh my memory on the "all writing/lyrics/music" verbiage and I could have sworn I deleted it right after. Maybe I hit "undo" a few too many times? Really not sure how I managed to make that mistake, but thank you very much for catching it and reaching out. I haven't completely lost my mind, don't worry! Sock (tock talk) 19:47, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
  • whew. Thanks.

Happy First Edit Day!

Invitation to join the Fifteen Year Society

Dear Sock/Archive 11,

I'd like to extend a cordial invitation to you to join the Fifteen Year Society, an informal group for editors who've been participating in the Wikipedia project for fifteen years or more.

Best regards, Chris Troutman (talk) 19:20, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

Thank you very much Chris! I'd be happy to join, if only to remind myself that I've somehow been here and active for 15 years. Sock (tock talk) 20:59, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello! I've just noticed that you took the time to go through the album's whole credits, so I wanted to thank you for that!

By the way, feel free to make any other kind of edit, if needed: this was probably the first album page I've ever created myself, so it might still a bit rough... Oltrepier (talk) 14:04, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Absolutely, happy to help! It's something of a weekly ritual for me to go through the List of 2024 albums page and fill out the credits for any new releases (provided they haven't already been done). I'd be happy to take a comb through the rest of the article when I have a moment, but at a glance, I think you should be proud of your work! It looks better than a lot of first-time album articles, my own included. Sock (tock talk) 14:22, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
Nice to hear that, thank you for the help and the feedback! : ) Oltrepier (talk) 15:38, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for all you do

I see so many great contributions from you. I'm floored. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 18:31, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

That's a huge compliment coming from you, thank you so much! Sock (tock talk) 19:16, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello! I hope you're doing well.

I've recently created an article for Alfie Templeman's new album, but since I'm not too familiar with Tidal and other platforms, I just wanted to ask you if you could go ahead and add (or check) the credits for me, please... I should've already sorted the "Track listing" section out, while the "Personnel" section is currently hidden, but ready to be expanded!

On a side note, I find it strange that neither Metacritic, nor ADM have any information about reviews for Radiosoul, yet, but maybe it's just because it's still too early...

Anyway, thank you for your attention! Oltrepier (talk) 12:12, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

@Oltrepier: Happy to help! I've just added the personnel section and updated the track listing credits based on the liner notes. There's a few discrepancies on Tidal's credits for some reason, but I typically side with the liner notes over Tidal in those cases.
If you're ever wanting to get credits from Tidal in the future, you can register for an account with your email (no payment required) and then just go to https://listen.tidal.com. That lets you search and view albums, where you can then click "Credits" and see whatever the artist submitted.
It looks like Alfie isn't on Metacritic at all, but I know they've been overhauling their music section for nine months now and he may have fallen through the cracks. That said, I did a cursory Google and found another review from Paste that you may want to add. There's also a review from Northern Transmissions, but that's unfortunately a blacklisted site so you won't be able to use that one.
Good luck building out the article! Sock (tock talk) 14:34, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
Oh, that would explain why even Alfie's artist profile is missing from the site...
Anyway, thank you very much for your help, I appreciate it! : ) Oltrepier (talk) 17:18, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
