Re: Contra Dam DYK Query
Hey, thanks for taking the time to review the nomination. I replaced or removed the necessary references. I don't have a problem with cutting the hook down, I thought the poll made it more interesting (it was a pretty neat stunt you must admit). I wanted to directly cite Sky Movies in the hook too but didn't want to make it too long.--NortyNort (Holla) 12:46, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Ted Cohen and his Bush book edit
Thank you SmartSE for your commentary on the reprimand I received for editing the Wiki link on Bush's new book Decision Points. You suggest there has been no media coverage of my book Derision Points. There has been in Maine under its original title. I felt the Wiki link to bush's memoir should have some balance. So I added mine, and was reprimanded by "The Resident Anthropologist." Thank you for your assistance. And for appreciating my using my real name. -Ted Cohen —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.156.81.87 (talk) 11:54, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note. I still can't find any press coverage in reliable sources, but thanks for not just carrying on to place the link into the article. SmartSE (talk) 12:05, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
SmartSE: Ted Cohen here ... I am furnishing here a link to a story that appeared in a Maine newspaper in 2008 about my Bush book, under its original title, "Clown Prince, Bush The W." The title is still "Clown Prince, Bush The W," with a subtitle of "Derision Points, the Real Story Of His Decision Points." Here is the link:
Thank you for your indulgence. I simply wanted you to know that this is verified sourcing of a legitimate news outlet that carried coverage of my book. If this helps my argument that I should be able to have editied the Wiki piece on bush's own memoir, I would appreciate your considering reinstating the reverted edits. -Best, Ted Cohen —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ted Cohen (talk • contribs) 01:36, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
P.S. Ted Cohen here again ... I should have explained that the link to the newspaper story on my coverage is a link to the newspaper's electronic version of the story, which also appeared in their print edition. Thanks again. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ted Cohen (talk • contribs) 01:42, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'm afraid this isn't enough - to include any reference to your book, we'd need a news article that discussed your book and GWB's together. I should have maybe said that before, sorry for not. Also I noticed that story says it is fictional, so I'm not really sure it would ever be suitable to include. SmartSE (talk) 10:49, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
OK, thank you SmartSE for your consideration. -Ted Cohen —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ted Cohen (talk • contribs) 22:03, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

re: MOG Press Archives page
Hi, you just commented on the MOG Press Archives page I created. This long list of articles was contained in the MOG page, and I wanted to get rid of the clutter. The articles seem like they're informative, but don't belong on the main MOG wikipedia page. Is there a way to keep them on Wikipedia so that readers of the article can access them, or should I just delete them?GHGause (talk) 19:12, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- Basically, you should rewrite the MOG article, using the press articles as references. At the moment, it is mainly based on primary sources, like their own website, which may not be neutral and make the article look like an advert. It's far better to use secondary sources instead. Like I was trying to say before, if the links aren't saying anything that is unique to that reference, they should be removed. I'll keep a watch on the article and can provide more pointers if you want. SmartSE (talk) 20:11, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
Using quote box - no width, please
Hi, just noticed you adding a quote on the 1835_Concepción_earthquake page. I removed the "width" box property, and now the box is not always 1000px wide any more but adjusts itself to the window width. I hope that's OK, and maybe you like to let others know, or even fix similar boxes you might have created in the past. Tempel (talk) 18:05, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note, I didn't add it myself, but moved it from elsewhere in the article. Cheers for fixing it though. SmartSE (talk) 18:16, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Just a thought, although I don't support its presence in the article at all, the upload could be smaller, about a quarter of its size now, that would make it less visible to see the actual people in the pic. How do you do that..reduce the size of the upload ?Off2riorob (talk) 11:50, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Greetings from the Contribution Team
Greetings! Please excuse this intrusion on your talk page, and allow me to invite you to participate on the newly-formed Wikipedia Contribution Team, or WP:CONTRIB for short! The goal of the team is to attract more and better contributions specifically to the English Wikipedia, as well as to help support the fundraising team in our financial and editing contribution goals. We have lots of stuff to work on, from minor and major page building, to wikiproject outreach, article improvement, donor contacting, and more -- in fact, part of our mission is to empower team members to make their own projects to support our mission. Some of our projects only take a few minutes to work on, while others can be large, multi-person tasks -- whatever your interest level, we're glad to have you. If this sounds of interest to you, please visit WP:CONTRIB and sign onto the team. Even if there does not appear to be anything that really speaks out as being work you'd like to do, I'd encourage you to join and follow the project anyway, as the type of work we'll be doing will certainly evolve and change over time. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me, or ask on the Contribution talk page. Regards, ⇒DanRosenthal Wikipedia Contribution Team 19:41, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Vacuum Airship
Hi Smartse, I am new to Wikipedi. Yesterday I tried to link the Vacuum Airship article to my patent applications. The links were removed,(I think by you).
http://www.justodians.org/VarVolVac/00_PatentApp.htm http://www.justodians.org/SphericalVacustat/SphericalVacustat.htm
The patent applicatons are in the public domain. In other words, the ideas in the applications belong to the public now and I have no finacial interest in them. I simply want to share the ideas.
Most people who have studied the subject of vacuum lift belive that it is not possible to build a vacuum vessel light enough to float using today's materials. But the calculations in my patent application show that if we build it large enough and put the structure in tension rather than compression then we can make a structure strong enough to stand up to atmospheric pressure and light enough to float. This would provide a boom to the airship industry which is now required to use expensive helium to lift airships.
It seems to me, the Vacuum Airship entry in Wikipedia is an appropriate place to share my work.
Please explain how I may proceed. Thanks, John —Preceding unsigned comment added by Justodian (talk • contribs) 16:51, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Justodian, welcome to wikipedia! The reason I reverted your edit was due to the fact that we have a policy that forbids publishing original research. Because these patents were applied for by you, and no independent sources demonstrate that they are important, adding them (and the vacustat name) violates the policy. If there has been independent coverage of your patents, like in a newspaper or journal (what we term reliable sources then it would be ok to add information about them. I can see why you might think this is the place to mention your patents but as a republisher of estabilished facts opinions, rather than a place to publish new ones, this isn't the case. Good luck with the idea and please drop me a note if anything is unclear or if they have been discussed by a secondary source (and thanks for not just replacing the links after I removed them). Question regarding VG Chartz
Hey, just wondering why the VG Chartz article has a space in the title, rather than VGChartz, which is the formatting used by both the site itself and every article I've seen referencing it. Is this due to the (frankly arcane) rules which govern articles titles? Or am I missing something here? I'm only asking you since you seem to have edited the article more than anyone else recently and may be privy to the reason behind the title. Anyway, thanks for your time. DKqwerty (talk) 17:17, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'd noticed this too, I only heard of the site last week after a post at WP:COIN but I agree with you that VGChartz is used by the site and by most references. Judging by this it was originally at VGChartz but was moved, this is all I can find in the talk archives about it. It should be moved back to VGChartz in my opinion, but you should probably start a thread on the talk page, just to check. SmartSE (talk) 17:36, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you so much for your help. I've made a little bit of a fool of myself. Sorry for the revert but I thought you were a bot or someone who had made a mistake! Then I sent you an email before checking mine.
And nice to know about how to cite JSTOR here. Thanks again. DinDraithou (talk) 17:41, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

- Thank you for offering to help out further. I may very well need a few more at some point. Sometime next year I will be moving to the city and gain easy access to things, but currently I'm still separated from civilization by several miles of water (the Chesapeake Bay) and a number of times that of highway... and then there's Washington, D.C. traffic, which is terrible. And parking. Alternatively there's the Metro but if you show up at the wrong times you won't find parking at the station. Major hassle. So I prefer to beg or even pay for something online. afDs
I congratulate you on your ability to keep calm during the acrimonious discussions at AfD. My advice for being able to keep doing so is not following up every adverse comment. Let the opponents speak for themselves--if they are wrong it will be obvious when others judge the issue. I have had occasion to advise the other editor before, and I shall do so again, and if necessary, not limit myself to advice--but I think the other editor will be watched sufficiently by a number of people, so that I won't have to do any admin action myself. I have almost always found advice sufficient. DGG ( talk ) 07:13, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
Plasmodium
The edit you recently made Im afraid isnt helpful.
The subgenera section lists only ~100 species while the taxonbox list is over 200. Its a problem Im working on. I have not been able to determine all the subgenera for all the species yet. Until such time as I or some other editor can do this the taxobox seems to only sensible way of doing this.
If you think that taxobox is too long try Eimeria. Virtually no subgenera and ~1700 species. Admittedly Eimeria is probably the largest single undivided genus in biology. For example of subdivisions in use might I suggest Taxonomy of Anopheles. DrMicro (talk) 15:13, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

NHSBT
Hi Smartse, I tried to updated the content on NHSBT profile several times but unsuccessfully. The copy is obsolete (Wall of life) and the content misses lot of new topics.
Many thanks Luca —Preceding unsigned comment added by Luca.degiuseppe (talk • contribs) 11:50, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Luca, there are a number of reasons that your edits are unfortunately not suitable for an encyclopedia. Firstly, I suspect you have a conflict of interest since 195.99.217.140 (talk · contribs) edited the article just before you did and that IP is registered to the National Blood Service. Our policies and guidelines strongly discourage editors with a conflict of interest from editing articles related to them because it is hard for them to uphold our core policies of verifiability and neutrality. Secondly, much of the information you've added is copy + pasted from copyrighted material and is therefore a copyright violation which must be removed as soon as possible once it is noticed. It is not forbidden for you to edit the article, but you must follow our policies and guidelines very attentively if your edits are to be retained. If you'd like to try again, you first need to find reliable sources discussing the NHSBT, good places to look are google news and google scholar. This is because articles should be written primarly from secondary sources that are not linked to the subject of the article, rather than the organisations website. Articles should not just be a copy of a website as this is not the function of wikipedia. For example you should link to organ donation and blood donation rather than going into any detail about them in the article. I'd suggest you work on a draft at User:Luca.degiuseppe/draft first and you can then request feedback from myself or other editors before moving the content into the main article. Because of the problems with the current version I will again revert your edits. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I apologise for not explaining this in more detail before. SmartSE (talk) 12:19, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Having a look myself, http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/ has quite a few articles, which could be suitable sources for the articles. SmartSE (talk) 12:22, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Smartse, many thanks for the reply that has given me lots of further clarifications. I've just update internal content already present on wiki, I hope it's ok now. LucaDG —Preceding undated comment added 16:28, 18 November 2010 (UTC).
Edstat and me
Hi! Please look at my talk page. Best regards, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 00:32, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Kiefer, I'll make a comment there tomorrow when I've looked at things in more detail, but from a quick look, I think that the same problems from before are being repeated. SmartSE (talk) 00:50, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- I looked more seriously at the alleged Sockpuppets, which go back years, something I didn't recognize until now. I suspect that a ban or long-term block may happen.
- I didn't raise the issue of the sock-puppets and Edstat accusing people of anti-semitism frequently (although one of the puppets raised the correct point of "old" and "new" testaments being Christian-centric, among other valid points, before the broad anti-semitism attacks and predictions of doom appeared). Without Edstat's drama, I could have published another article or two this year! Best regards, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 02:09, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- As I said on my talk page: Ha ha ha ha ha ha. And did you remind Kiefer on the page where he had over 2 dozen invectives against me in bold about being civil? Please... keep off my talk page with your charade!Edstat (talk) 23:37, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- SmartSE, thank you for being a breath of integrity and getting the ball rolling on the AfD! Of course, it just earned more trolling. You and Kiefer are correct - the same problems from before continue, with the sockpuppets, trolling, insults, hounding, lying, victimization, and embellished COI vanity pages going back for years in support of his biased agenda. It's too bad that WP does not have the integrity to do anything about it, not even when a copyvio image is uploaded by an advertising sockpuppet. But if he wishes to continue to leave those things on his professional reputation, so be it. Thanks again! Iulus Ascanius (talk) 16:04, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
- Dear Iulus and Smartse,
- I re-opened the Sock-Puppetry case of Edstat, whose previous investigation did not mention the formerly active sock-puppets from 2007. I posted his denials of sock-puppetry following the previous blocking. Referring to Iulus's discussion of behavior issues, I mentioned five other discussions of behavior, including some rather strong warnings from senior editors in the last week, which make me think that a change is coming. (Three years of disruptive editing seems like a long time to me.)
- Sorry for not replying earlier.
- Best regards, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 01:45, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Plasmodium
Thank you for your note on the discussion page. Your suggestion isnt bad and it is similar to the one I have used for the Taxonomy of Anopheles - which is Im afraid still incomplete (about 100 more species to be added). I strongly feel that the use of subgenera alone in this list is simply misleading and results in the removel of had to locate information from wikipedia. I have discussed the taxobox issue with the taxonbox maintainers and they dont see this as a problem at the minute. This discussion was in relation to the Eimeria a genus with 1700 described species. This later genus has no recognised subgenera. An alternative solution will probbaly be need there.
As a usero of protist data I can assure you that having a list of species in the genus is incredibly helpful. I do not know if any of the other editors invovled in this matter are regular users of protist data but having seen some of the suggestions I am inclined to doubt it. I would much prefer to leave the page alone as it was and to continue this discussion on the discussion page rather than engaging in an edit war - which is really very sily and wasteful in my view. - I think it's still relevant to the article, so thought it should stay to let any future editors read it, as I said, I agree this should be discussed elsewhere (maybe we should check archives too) but that I don't think that is a reason to remove it from the talk page. Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.
I have requested that an administrator intervene at the Plasmodium article to give us some breathing space to create the list. My suggestion is we back off discussing with DrMicro for long enough to create a list in the article or elsewhere, after which, I believe he will see that our method is reasonable. - Hi Tim, yes I am still looking to adopt. Re tips to becoming a mod - there are no moderators as such on wikipedia - we all moderate each other's edits to articles but no one has any more authority than anyone else. I'm guessing you'd like to be an administrator but it takes a lot of editing to gain the trust of the community to give you these tools - see Wikipedia:Unsuccessful_adminship_candidacies_(Chronological) for what I mean. There is plenty of other administrative work you can do without having the tools that admins have - take a look at Wikipedia:Maintenance for some areas you could help out with. If I were to adopt you, I'd like you to start editing articles, since we are here to write an encyclopedia - at the moment you haven't edited any, so I'm not entirely sure how I could be much help to you. If you plan to change this and want to learn how to help contribute content to the project then I'd be more than happy to adopt you. SmartSE (talk) 16:30, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Your templating of my Talk page was out of order. It wasn't helpful, especially if you'd bothered to look closely at the circumstances surrounding the anon IP edit, and the fact I'd asked RockPocket to take a look. Next time I'd appreciate it if you tried something constructive - perhaps you could have responded to the discussion on the article Talk page, or you could have responded at Rock's page. But templating a regular is a bit of a red rag. I assume you mean well, but it really wasn't appropriate or helpful. --HighKing (talk) 20:13, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- I'm sorry if you think that this was out of order, but it I try to be even handed with everyone, regardless of who they are. Like I said, when I added the template, I was only doing so because the IP had been issued with a 3RR warning by another editor. The edits they made were not blatant vandalism, since it takes two editors to edit war I felt it was only fair if you received a warning, the conditions around edit warring are irrelevant. I got warned for it back in September for something I considered very obviously correct, but have since learnt that there are always other options. Regarding WP:DTTR (had to look that up) I think that 3RR is a special case, since it is a specific warning, unlike something like {{uw-delete1}}. Anyway, hope everything gets sorted, bit busy with other things to take a deeper look I'm afraid. SmartSE (talk) 23:52, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- Fair enough. My own reaction to you was OOT anyway, looking at it in the cold light of another day, so apologies for that. --HighKing (talk) 16:27, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
DynCorp Entry Edit
Thanks for fixing this entry, I did not know about pasting from newspapers and look forward to contributing more to Wikipedia and improving my editing capabilities. Again, the work of you and many others is much appreciated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.111.26.83 (talk) 16:30, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
James Whittaker
Hi Smartse, you gave a review to James Whittaker article here. If you remember you asked that I remove the parish mag. I have. I was hoping to get some paper sources sent to me but they have not arrived. I have put two refs in the lede of the article. One in Australian botany site.... the other is a wedding leaflet .... which I agree is not usually a reliable source... however this one is published by Derby College. So if you get a mo....Victuallers (talk) 12:47, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

I got the information on Clathrin from the RCSB Protein Data Bank website "http://www.pdb.org/pdb/explore/motm.do#" It's a pretty reputable source from what I understand. —Preceding unsigned comment added by FrozenMan (talk • contribs) 04:41, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Blackfly
Hi Smartse. Thank you for your comments. The aphids on the video look like blackfly to me and they also seem consistent with the description in my source which describes them as blackish rather than black. I'm no expert however. I just see blackfly damaging the bean plants in my garden each year! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:15, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

edit warring
You also may be guilty of edit warring I have asked a admin to intervene in the dispute because I don't believe there is enough consensus because it seams to me that maybe some people are posting POV statements in favor of the article.TucsonDavid (talk) 17:35, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- Err, I haven't removed it at all today. I removed it once and then started a discussion on the talk page about it. SmartSE (talk) 17:38, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- I may of state it wrong sorry I think it belongs others don't I just don't think it should be removed arbitrarily. I got nothing against you personally so sorry if I came off strong. I believe more of a consensus is need. So I asked a amin to help because I'm still new and don't want to get caught up in a edit war. ok thanks for your time.TucsonDavid (talk) 17:42, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- No problem, likewise I have nothing against you, I didn't think you did have a problem with me, but what you said wasn't correct. Good idea for asking for help, but admins don't have any extra editorial oversight here, you just need to explain based on policies and guidelines if you think it should be included and counter the arguments for it not to be included. I can't read two of the three articles. The one article that was in English didn't impress me. It was hardly worth a mention. Me-123567-Me (talk) 21:15, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
Edward Davenport
Hi Smartse
I've taken your comments on board re the Davenport changes I made - I've removed the speculation about his personal life so that it's just a reference to the tatler article as it's the most up to date piece of news on him out there so probably should be referred to along with the others. With the house - good point, it's not about the house, but it seems to be a part of his business and so maybe useful to the balance wikipedia aims for. I've edited this down though so that it fits with what you said. What do you think of the new amends - ok to stay up? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Muso77 (talk • contribs) 15:15, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- It's better, but the fact remains that the article is about him not about events at his house, so I don't think every event held there should be included in the article. Adding "33 Portland Place is central to Davenport’s public goodwill" is also not neutral either and the reference provided does not back this up. From what I can tell the Tatler article could be a reasonable reference to use in the article, but to be honest I'm not sure about including any of the information about girlfriends in a biography of a living person without strong references to show it is long term and relevant, since it can obviously become out of date very quickly. SmartSE (talk) 15:28, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
No I don't think every event should be included either or it will just become an events list but these two seemed to be the most up to date and so the best to include to give a proper picture of what goes on there. With the 'goodwill' comment I wasn't sure how to word it but 'public goodwill' seemed neutral as it's not something he necessarily has but something he wants to create. Is there a better way to word it or is it ok like that? It seems to me that the house is pretty central to him and what he does with it with the art reflects on him as much as all the other things on there so it seemed a good thing to include -a bit of balance - not everything he does there but just a sample like the two I picked. There's already plenty on there about the orgies so I didn't look for anything on that! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Muso77 (talk • contribs) 16:08, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

The DOI doesn't work for your requested reference on mephedrone. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 21:08, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

DYK
On the DYK page where I nominated the article on Pheidole megacephala, you asked where the "unpublished material" reference came from. The answer is it is on the Featured Creatures site. I found I was unable to answer this query on the DYK page using the "edit" button. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:56, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Sulphurdale DYK
Thank you for reviewing Sulphurdale. However, I must ask you, why did you move the article? According to Wikipedia's policy on geographic places, all cities, towns, ghost towns, etc. should have the state name next to it unless it's a major city (for example, Salt Lake City doesn't need the state name next to it because it's a major city, while Woods Cross, Utah does, since it's not a major city). The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 21:58, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#United States for more information. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 22:02, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I wasn't aware of the guideline (not policy) and I notice that it is being disputed at the moment too. The reason I moved it, was because Sulphurdale was a redlink, and to me it makes little sense to add extra details to a title when they are unnecessary - why have Tony Blair, politician when Tony Blair will do? That said, I'm not too bothered, and if you think it is better as Sulphurdale, Utah then feel free to move it back. I'll take another look at the DYK nom tomorrow.
