Unmaintainable

[edit]

I have moved list of colleges affiliated with Mahamaya Technical University to User:Siddhartha Ghai/sandbox since it is simply not yet ready for publication. It is ridiculous to expect other people to update the table in its present form - about ten times longer in file size than it needs to be. Will you please:

  • remove all style statements and other HTML. Note that it is a total waste of space to repeat the cell widths in every row - once is sufficient. But it is better that widths should not be stated at all - let the browser fit the table to the user's window width.
  • change every institution name to a wikilink
  • delete the "Code of the Branches Courses" column - this is unencyclopedic information.

[edit]

Hi Siddhartha Ghai,

The First WikiConference India is being organized in Mumbai and will take place on 18-20 November 2011.
You can see our Official website, the Facebook event and our Scholarship form.

But the activities start now with the 100 day long WikiOutreach.

As you are part of WikiProject India community we invite you to be there for conference and share your experience. Thank you for your contributions.

We look forward to see you at Mumbai on 18-20 November 2011

Merged at Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing Kancheepuram. Also, Hariehkr, in the future, don't forget to sign your posts on talk pages using ~~~~ (4 tildes). Its probably near the top-left corner of your keyboard, to the left of the numbers. Alternatively, you could use the signature button on the editbar. Signing on talk pages helps identify who wrote what.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 17:12, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

With all due respect, I could not find any reason why you restored the external links which I removed per very specific guidelines. I also don't understand why you restored as references some external links which were clearly not used as references to anything in the article. I am always willing to learn though. --Muhandes (talk) 23:08, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. Didn't know that those references had been removed from the article. Added them while merging Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing, Kancheepuram with the said article. Was going to check the references and external links for policy later. Thanks for the heads up. Will take care to check content policies before merging from now on.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 07:46, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of hi-en or en-hi translated pages

[edit]

I need some examples (around 5-6) of pages that either have been translated fully or in part from english-hindi or from hindi-english .. like dehradun district, rangoli, satyajit ray, etc.

Also, where can I find such a list, IF I can find it? Thanks :) Wraith1097 (talk) 11:41, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You would've been able to find it, IF wikipedia was perfect. For translations on wikiprojects from one language to another, the template {{Translated page}} is placed on the page's talk page. The corresponding version on hindi wp is hi:साँचा:अनूदित पृष्ठ. Now, for the english wikipedia, wherever the template is used, pages can be found under Category:Translated pages, and more specifically for hindi, under Category:Pages translated from Hindi Wikipedia. Unfortunately, in case of the hindi wikipedia, this template was missing until very recently. Hence, even though many pages are translations of english articles, the template isn't much used. Translated pages on hindi wikipedia can be found at hi:श्रेणी:अनूदित पृष्ठ. Hope this answers your question.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 12:03, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. That was very helpful. Can you just give me some 4-5 examples of pages you have translated? If I can find any such pages, I will try to insert the necessary templates so that it will be easier to find them later on. Wraith1097 (talk) 05:50, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, its been around 1 month since I started editing the hindi wikipedia, so I haven't actually translated pages yet. Although I did make corrections to hi:इन्दिरा गांधी. But I've already added the template to that. I think you could start by placing the template on hi:अमिताभ बच्चन and hi:वीएलसी मीडिया प्लेयर. I think these are translated, but you should rather make sure of that before using the template. Also, remember to place the template on the article's talk page, not on the article itself.
PS:The {{Talkback}} template is used if you're answering on your talk page. If you're answering on my talk page, there's no need to use the template. Simply put, its objective is to inform me via my talk page that I've a message somewhere else. So there's no point in using it if the message is on my talk page itself. :P Happy Editing!--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 10:07, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Improvement in article of List of Railway stations in india

[edit]

Hello, I just joined the Wiki project on Indian Railways. I was going through the article List of railway stations in India. I happened to get a good idea on improvement of this article.
In the tables used in this article, there are five columns, namely Station Name, Station Code, Elev and Map. I was wondering that instead of the last two columns we can add a column marking the GeoCoordinates of the railway stations. For it is very difficult to find out Elev of each and every station in India.
In this way we can enhance the efficiency of the article.
Waiting to hear from you soon. Abhishek Indwar 08:06, 29 August 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Indwar (talkcontribs)

Hello, Abhishek Indwar. Since some stations' elevations are already mentioned in the list, removing them would be inappropriate. However, adding coordinates is a good idea. But I must tell you, that even though it may seem easy, its going to be almost equally difficult as the elevation(considering the number of railway stations). I think a better starting point for working on the list would be correcting the table formatting, removing the image and map links wherever removal is required, deleting station duplications, correcting disambig links, and then.... we should think about adding the coordinates data.
Of course in saying all this I'm assuming that the coordinates for all the stations are not readily available. But if you do have coordinates to lots of stations, go ahead and add them.
Also, whenever you're writing anywhere on a talk page, don't forget to sign using ~~~~. This is automatically replaced by your username and helps identify who wrote what. All the best with the list--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 08:47, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK then. I am going forward first by naming the station with their State's name, as I noticed many slots empty against the column State. Indwar (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 09:30, 29 August 2011 (UTC).[reply]

The Original Barnstar
I hereby award you the original barnstar for your help with Template:Membership/Sub/T/doc documentation. とある白い猫 chi? 06:15, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
I was wondering if you'd be interested in expanding the documentation with the updates to the template, mainly concerning the UNSC. See Wikipedia:International membership templates -- とある白い猫 chi? 06:15, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Per IRC (Sorry I kept getting distracted), 1 Jan - 31 Dec is the typical cycles. Indeed a default Siddhartha Ghai/archive1 value is possible but it would be overridden when template is used. :) -- とある白い猫 chi? 10:48, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Demembership is implemented for all orgs. Also note that [1] the last }} of the last line should be placed at the start of next line. This way redundent new lines can be avoided. :) -- とある白い猫 chi? 01:07, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Membership Doc

[edit]

Hi there. Sorry I haven't been able to create more templates, been a bit busy. I've just updated the doc with interpol parameters. Will create more templates now. Also, what's wrong with Wikipedia:International membership templates/2011? Some templates are linking instead of transclusion. Has it hit some kind of transclusion limit? Thanks--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 03:58, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We have hit the limit yes, but that is a technical problem I hope to resolve in the upcoming days. I am busy with a few real world events but once those are resolved by Friday I'll be able to spend more time on redesigning the template structure (without changing how data is inputted) so transclusion limit problem is averted. Thank you for the updates on Interpol in doc. Interpol values actually need to be added to most of the templates as thankfully we now have the PDF of membership dates! I deserve no credit for the PDF as User:Guerillero found it. Also, welcome back :) -- とある白い猫 chi? 05:18, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

साँचा:तिथि जाँच

[edit]

Hi I am here again for your help, You are created one template साँचा:तिथि जाँच in hi, that's great. How do you fix below

  • {{#time:Y F j|{{{1|{{CURRENTYEAR}}}}}-{{{2|{{CURRENTMONTH}}}}}-{{{3|{{CURRENTDAY}}}}} -1 days}}=2024 December 3

with this साँचा:तिथि जाँच template in Indic or other wiki?? And TW is working fine in our wiki, We are just now translating interface in to Bengali. Thanks. --- Jayanta Nath (Talk|Contrb) 07:30, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, that template works only for inputs like January 2012. It was intended as a replacement for Template:Check date. That template is used by Template:Multiple issues, and if you go on working with twinkle, you're going to encounter the problem that multiple issues won't create month-wise subcategories if datecheck doesn't give it an output. साँचा:तिथि जाँच supports hindi month names and devanagari numerals and gives an appropriate output (see its documentation), and I changed multiple issues to add month-wise categories if the output says its a valid date in any one of the formats it accepts.
If the above is confusing, it just adds support for various date formats like जनवरी 2012, जनवरी २०१२, January 2012 and January २०१२.
As for the problem you describe, I'm assuming you want an output like 12 bengali-for-january 2012 (assuming you want support only for one numeral system, and just want to translate the month names). If that is so, that conversion should be achievable. However, if you're stuck with half the users wanting one numeral system and half wanting the other, it would be difficult (still achievable though).
If there is no numeral problem, I could create a system for this on hi-wp and you could export it to bn. (It should require few modifications to work though, but those are probably easily done).
So let me know if you need numeral support for two systems or one. And we can move forward accordingly.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 17:50, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Ok, looking at the result of the code you gave on bn, I see that your problem is two-fold. First, that #time doesn't accept month names except the english ones, and second, that no parserfunctions accept non-arabic numerals.
I might be able to help, although the problem is quite complex. I'd need quite some information from you if I can even try to think up something to fix this.
If you want to give it a shot yourself first, I'd recommend reading mw:Help:Magic words and mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions. If you want me to create a template based solution for this, please answer the following:
  • Tell me which of the following kind of output you want:
1. arabic date SPACE bengali month name SPACE arabic year
2. bengali date SPACE bengali month name SPACE bengali year
3. arabic date SPACE english month name SPACE arabic year
4. arabic date SPACE english month name SPACE arabic year
Please specify (with option number) which of the above options you want to support. If you need support for multiple (maybe for compatibility with the current state of things), please specify that too.
Lastly, here's the bad news. I'm really busy with other templates and twinkle at hi-wp right now, and it could be a week or two before I even begin to look for a solution to this; although I'll try my best to look at it ASAP. Regards--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 18:18, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

PPS:Heh, I just thought about it for a minute, and it turns out the solution is pretty simple :) All you need to do is to provide #time with input in arabic numerals and an english month name, all of which can be calculated separately. This can be done very easily. You'll just need one template for converting month names, and one for converting numbers from bengali to arabic. Both are very easily done. I'll create the code for the former at bn:User:Siddhartha Ghai/Monthname convert. I'm actually working on an all-round solution for the latter problem at hi:Template:अंक परिवर्तन. That's quite huge and you probably don't need all of it. If all you need is to be able to convert integers 0 to 9999 from mediawiki default (bengali numerals) to arabic ones, its done in a much simpler way, and I'll create a template at bn for that too. Regards--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 18:29, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK thanks Siddhartha, we have Template:en2bndigit and Template:ConvertDigit to convert all vise-verse solution. But How do you fix above issue by Template: Monthname convert at (ParserFunctions area)?
OK, those two templates are for converting arabic numerals to bengali numerals. What you need here is the opposite. You have bengali outputs from CURRENTYEAR and CURRENTDAY but #time won't accept bengali, it will only accept arabic. So what you need to do is to convert bengali numerals to arabic ones. Once you have such a template, the code would be something like:
{{#time:Y F j|{{bn2endigits|{{{1|{{CURRENTYEAR}}}}}}}-{{Monthname convert|{{{2|{{CURRENTMONTH}}}}}}}-{{bn2endigits|{{{3|{{CURRENTDAY}}}}}}} -1 days}}
What this will effectively mean is that the parameters 1, 2 and 3; no matter whether they're passed as bengali input or arabic/english input, will be converted to english/arabic output. This output is then passed to #time, which then works as expected and gives output in bengali numerals and monthnames.
I'll set up the bn2endigits at bn:User:Siddhartha Ghai/bn2endigits but it'll have some limitations which I'll add to its doc and you can translate it to bengali.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 19:20, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What happened about these? Are we still stuck at hitting the transclusion limit? If yes, could I give fixing it a shot? If this too is yes, could you explain what is done by which subtemplate  ?

PS:If you remember, some time ago I'd tried to make a script for creating the country-wise templates. I've succeeded :D

Its at User:Siddhartha Ghai/MTC.js. Right now, its only for creation, not editing already existing templates; it doesn't support demembership or different kinds of membership or "countrylink". But it works (and it shouldn't be hard to add support for the rest of this stuff). Oh, and since its "Experimental" as of now, it only edits my sandbox. That can easily be changed to edit the subtemplates instead if you think its good enough to use. Regards--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 19:45, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't given up on the idea. I probably need to find a way to make the templates simpler. It is unlikely that devs will increase the transclusion count.
I'd be happy to resume working on them now that I am not alone :)

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

[edit]

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

Thank you very much for the comments and links. I didn't realized that the article has so many problems that you brought out. Will address the problems within a few days. I agree that books are reliable sources, but most of the books from google books search mentions only about the alumni or professors of IIM Lucknow, they don't mention anything about the college. The institute has not published any books nor has anyone written any book about the college per se. I have included references from newspaper articles wherever possible. --Anbu121 (talk me) 04:57, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I did a series of improvements I was planning for List of deemed universities and now it is, to my best ability, ready for WP:FLC. Please let me know as soon as possible. --Muhandes (talk) 19:40, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Replied at Talk:List of deemed universities. Feel free to go ahead with the FLC. It's good enough to pass in the current shape too. Regards--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 19:50, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, could I have another pair of eyes on this template. I am unable to figure out why translation sometimes fails. Clicking language buttons also does not do what they are supposed to do. Template is used on about 10,000 pages so edit with care. :) -- A Certain White Cat chi? 03:36, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I've seen the code the template uses. But I can't seem to find what it is supposed to do which it isn't doing correctly. I can see that the translation links simply link to the subtemplates, but that seems to be hardcoded in Commons:Template:Assessments/lang.
What are the links supposed to do? Are they to work with the language select feature? Or are they supposed to work with AjaxTranslation? If its the latter, better check the issues listed in the linked page. If its supposed to do something else, what is it supposed to do? I can't seem to figure it out.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 10:26, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

TWG

[edit]

Sorry to leave you waiting - I've been too busy to look at TWG this week. Could you just remind me what it was specifically that needed to be looked at? I'll try to find time to check it out ASAP. — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:56, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No worries :)
You have an entire month to look at it (I'm going on a wikibreak in June :) )
As for the problem, its that the twportlet code works when executed from the console using the following function:
$.each(TWG.messages, function (k,v) {
var mod = $.extend(true, {}, v);
var id = 'p-' + mod.name;
twAddPortletLink( function(){ TWG.tagger.createform(mod); }, mod.name, id, mod.altname );
});
This function adds the menu for TWG just like the Twinkle menu.
The problem is that the same code used in TWG (specifically TWG.tagger.tab) doesn't add the menu.
What I understand from this is that the code is fine, and should theoretically work within TWG too (just like in twinkle), but for some reason, doesn't.
Two possible problems could be that
  • the functions have the same name as the twinkle functions, and maybe they're conficting or something? (Maybe the TWG ones should be renamed?)
  • The code is being executed on $(document).ready This is the document onready event (right?) Maybe it would work if executed onload?
Feel free to test these two, and any other theories you might have about why the portlet code doesn't work from userscripts. See you in July. :) --Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 10:40, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Membership templates

[edit]

I think we can adopt it to work with infoboxes. This can be achieved without too much template complexity as we would be rendering only one run rather than 200 runs with lists. -- A Certain White Cat chi? 13:37, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

For this end we can merge Template:Membership/Sub/Flag into one template with a switch. Significant overhaul of the existing system may even be considered. We need to do this even with MediaWiki updates. -- A Certain White Cat chi? 09:48, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Hey, I have been editing the article Rampur,_Uttar Pradesh from quite some time. It is still listed as start class on quality scale. Can you please review it and give me feedback on the status of the article or if any improvements are needed? :) Shawrix (talk) 10:08, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Did some cleanup. Further suggestions:
  • Add references wherever they are missing (especially at places where I've added the {{Says who}} template).
  • The literacy information in the Demographics and Education section does not match. Check up which is correct and put it in the demographics section. Repeating it in the Education section is unneeded.
  • Complete sections per WP:INCITIES.
  • References should probably contain archival links too (so that references are not affected by Link rot). See Wikipedia:Using WebCite for help.
  • Request an assessment at Wikipedia:WikiProject_India/Assessment#Requesting_an_assessment.

Suggestion for you: Do not copy-paste content from any website onto wikipedia, unless quoting someone. Rather, use your own words to express the same meaning and intent. Copy-pasting large amounts of content may amount to copyright violation.

Hope this helps :) Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 21:32, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article about Radha Thomas

[edit]

I am currently working on the Wiki page for Ms Radha Thomas. She is an Indian jazz singer and songwriter. In fact, she is known as a diva in the Indian jazz scene. She previously was with the band Human Bondage and has sung and performed globally. The article is still under development. I haven't completed it or submitted it for review yet. You can have a look at it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Radha_Thomas. I will be requesting your help and advice (as usual) in making it conform to all Wiki standards. I created the redlinks. I think interpol info is complete. Other organizations including UN, UNSC, WTO as well as others probably do need an update. I did interpol because information is on a pdf file only. -- A Certain White Cat chi? 03:03, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

I just created the main template and made its doc. I changed the usage in Wikipedia:International membership templates/Year to the main template instead of the subtemplate, and we exceed the template include size again.

The report stands at:

<!--
NewPP limit report
Preprocessor node count: 198253/1000000
Post-expand include size: 2048000/2048000 bytes
Template argument size: 213873/2048000 bytes
Highest expansion depth: 35/40
Expensive parser function count: 0/500
-->

and 13 templates are being omitted. Maybe we should partition the page now as its only going to get larger as we add support for more organizations. Views?--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 20:36, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should first complete existing data because those numbers hill change when data is added. OIC, UN, NATO, WTO, AL each lacks some info. We can think of a solution depending on the result. Also sorry I got knocked out last night mid conversation. :P -- A Certain White Cat chi? 05:36, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
I'll try to add the info to the data containers. Also, I tried coming up with an alternative system (a modified version of the current system), but it doesn't work as good (only shows upto Turkey in WP:International membership templates/Year and then exceeds the post-expand include size). The other system is in subtemplates of Template:Membership/Design2/ and can be called the same way as the current one ({{Membership/Design2/Table|CountryName}}).--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 10:52, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Supporting Indian Wikipedia Program resource distribution

[edit]

In 2017 - 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India chapter (WMIN) and user groups will pilot a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program (Code name: Project Tiger) will:

(a) Support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and
(b) Sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

The objective of the program is to provide laptops and internet stipends for existing editors who need support to contribute more actively. 50 basic model Acer Chromebooks and Internet stipends for 100 contributors are available for distribution. Project Tiger Writing Contest

[edit]

In 2017 – 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India Chapter (WMIN) and user groups from India, are piloting a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program will (a) support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and (b) sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

Phase (a) has been completed, during which active contributors were awarded laptops and internet stipends. Phase (b) will be a contest in which editors will come together and develop a writing contest focused on content gaps. Each month three individual prizes will be awarded to each community based on their contribution for the month. The prizes worth 3,000 INR, 2000 INR, and 1,000 INR, will be awarded to the top contributors for each month. The contest started at March 1, 2018, 0:00, and will end at May 31, 2018, 23:59 (IST).
