Cello Web Browser Comparison
For your GA review, you suggested that I offer a comparison of Cello to other browsers at the time. I've found a comparison chart for Cello (web browser) at doi:10.1145/234173.234177. The chart on page 10 compares
- Cello v 1

- Netscape(Win)v 1.0
- Spyglass(Win)v 1.02
- AirMosaic( Win)v 3.06
- Internetworks (Win) Beta 4
- Win-Tapestry(Win)v 1.67
- Web-Explorer(OS/2) v .91
in the following categories
- COMPLIANCE
- proxy
- extended html
- PERFORMANCE
- multithreading
- dynamic linking
- deferred image
- multi-pane/window
- CONFIGURABILITY
- kiosk mode
- external players
- INTEGRATION
- d&d to clipboard
- spawnable players

- NAVIGATION AIDS
- hotlist/bookmark
- folders/categories
- menu/button bar
- import/export
- annotation
- auto time/date stamp
Would it be considered copyright infringement if I were to make a copy of the chart on wikipedia. The chart simply displays + or - for whether that browser has that feature or not. What are your thoughts?Smallman12q (talk) 00:48, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
- It's simply factual information; you can't really copyright facts, only content. Cite the source you pulled the information from, and don't simply make an exact duplicate of the chart (create your own chart based on that information; considering the original chart is not wikicode this shouldn't really be difficult as it's necessary to make your own anyway) and it should be fine. Nice find. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:54, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
- I've put the chart up at User:Smallman12q/Browser comparison. Could you please help me clean it up a bit when you get the chance? I'm not too good with table wikicode. Also, should I replace the yes/no/weak with graphical checks and xs?Smallman12q (talk) 12:19, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delayed response. That actually looks really good. I think some colorization will help. I will add that in and see if there's anything else that can be improved, but not right now as I just got a new lens and am on a mission to improve the images at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. I'll swing by that page later tonight. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:48, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
- No rush...I was thinking of getting it to look more like the chart at Adobe Creative Suite otherwise a bit more like the one at Comparison_of_web_browsers. I'll probably create some type of "Old browser comparison" section when I get the chance.Smallman12q (talk) 22:09, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
- Could you create some better photos for floppy disk, or should I put the request into graphic labs?Smallman12q (talk) 23:56, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- My apologies for the delayed response; I had been extremely busy last week. Is there anything in particular you don't like about the current shots? I can certainly do that. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 16:12, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Floppy Disk
The current shots at Floppy disk aren't really of good quality.
-
Comparison
-
5.25
-
Low res floppy
If possible, I'd appreciate if you could at least upload a higher-res shot of both sides of the standard 3.5 floppy. If you have any 5.25's around, taking a high res shot of them would also be of help.
On a side note, Sony recently announced they'd discontinue floppies, so the current images have been used in a number of article dailymail, cnet, and a number of others. (Btw, good luck on your RFA!)Smallman12q (talk) 01:50, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the comment regarding my RFA. As for the 5.25" floppies, I personally don't have any, but I'm fortunate (?) to be at a school that still uses some extremely old technology, and I think I might still be able to get my hands on a 5.25" disk. I'll see what I can do. Surely the 3.5" won't be a problem. I'll upload at full resolution of my camera (5616x3713 if I remember correctly). --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 01:52, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks! Also if possible, could you get some shots of various floppy paraphernalia (old cases, obsolete floppy readers, etc). It'd be great if we could get some sounds of a floppy drive reading...but I could probably do that. Your shots will be appreciated ^.^ Smallman12q (talk) 00:58, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your participation in the April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive
On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, I'd like to especially thank you for your efforts over this past month's GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a complete success, which hopefully results in more expedient good article reviews, increasing users' confidence in the good article nomination processes. Even if you made just a small contribution, it still helped contribute to the success of this drive. Here is what we have accomplished this last month in this drive.
For those who have accomplished certain objectives in the drive, awards will be coming shortly. Again, thank you for your help in the drive, and I hope you continue to help review GA nominations and overall improve the quality of articles here on Wikipedia. |

Spotfixer
Spot/Caroline was active on a number of articles, most of which I never look at. He or she has previously employed vast nets of less complex socks but I worry he or she is getting better with time. Any chance at a CU to look for any sleepers from that address? - Schrandit (talk) 19:14, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
- A valid point. We've missed socks in the past going through the archive. I'll reopen the case for a sleeper check. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 19:20, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
- Cool. With things like this I generally tend to weigh more on the side of protecting personal information but I think this is one of those rare cases where checking the ip is worth it. - Schrandit (talk) 19:22, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Test pages
Hello Shirik. Thanks for the barnstar! I had a quick question about test pages: I have been tagging pages like this as G2 (essays, personal reflections, opinion pieces, etc. that don't contribute to the encyclopedia). I have been doing this for quite some time, but since these types are not directly included in the criteria, should I go PROD/AFD instead? Thanks, Airplaneman ✈ 02:25, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- I feel like I have a stricter interpretation of the CSD criteria than some, so I wouldn't be surprised if some admins considered that a valid G2, but personally, I wouldn't. It is arguable that the user was trying to contribute content to the encyclopedia, and deletion might venture into WP:BITE. Instead, I think userfication is a better option (and that is what I'll probably go do now). --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 02:29, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the insight. I'll userfy from now on as well. Airplaneman ✈ 02:32, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Shirik, i saw your picture at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Panther_Creek_Falls.jpg and i want to use it for a cd-cover with piano music. Is that ok with u, if i mention wikimedia commons as source? regards, Tjako (talk) 14:20, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- Certainly! It's released under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license so as long as you follow that license, you're all set. You can either list me as the source directly or you can provide a link to commons (either way is appropriate attribution). Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 14:44, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

George Osborne
In protecting George Osborne, you allowed this edit to stand. I don't think you intended to help rename him "Gideon", so I thought I'd point it out. -Rrius (talk) 18:06, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi; the page is only semiprotected, so you (or many others) can fix it. I don't know enough to correct the contents of that article, I only know enough to know the page needed protection from BLP violations. My intention was not to lock down a "permanent" version of the article, only to ensure these violations stop. Feel free to correct it. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:10, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Need you to take a look at this
Hello, I need you to look trough a SPI. Its very important that you read through everything. From the beginning to the end. [1]
Then, what I would like is a comment from you on the last part of the evidence, where I point out this edit. The fact that after exclusively using the Nefer Tweety account to back Arab Cowboy on several articles for 7-8 months, (considering everything I have pointed out in the evidence) the NT account then contacts ACs sock before it was revealed that AC controlled it and "asks" him to go to the article. How can this have been a coincidence? Can you take a look at the evidence? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 10:30, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
- I will say that the evidence is pretty compelling. However, I would prefer not to act upon this case because, as I said in my RFA, I'm still relatively new to SPI and don't really feel comfortable making such a judgement call yet. I would defer to another admin here. However, I will drop a line to User:MuZemike about my findings and see if he'll take a second look at it. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 14:56, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for looking at it. But I did not see a post at MuZemikes talkpage. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 18:49, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry. I actually started discussing it with User:Tim Song instead, and it wasn't on his talk page I used the SPI IRC channel instead. I'm not sure if he intends to act on it yet. There's a lot to discuss. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:50, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- He made a post at his talkpage at 04:33, 4 May that he won't have enough time to give this case the full review it requires. Did you talk with him after or before this? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 18:59, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- I don't have logs to be sure, but that sounds like after. Do note that we're not discarding the case or anything, but it's going to take some time to go through this case, because getting sufficient evidence and confidence to overcome a CU "unrelated" response is quite demanding. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:05, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- But who will go through it? It was first closed because no one took a look at it, then I got the SPI clerk to reopen it, told him I would get an admin to go through it[2] I have asked like 8-9 different admins now. They're either too busy or they see the connection but wont do anything. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 18:06, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
- So whats the deal? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 19:53, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- Please be patient, an admin will review the case thoroughly in due course, in the meantime, the best thing for you to do is just to do some article work or something, continuing to ask admins to go through the case isn't really going to have much affect, an admin will look at it, when they have time to do so. Kindest regards, SpitfireTally-ho! 21:50, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- But that's just it, I was told the exact same thing before,[3] and it was then closed without anyone looking at it.[4] --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 23:04, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Zealking rides again
Hi Shirik. Sorry to bother you with this, but it looks like this very persistent vandal has found a way around edit filter 316, witness his latest incarnation Xealking (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). Favonian (talk) 10:09, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
- I resigned from the filter and can no longer view the code, but I'm pretty sure I know how Xealking managed to evade it, and fixing it shouldn't be a great trouble for Shirik (or anyone else with access). He didn't survive for long anyway, even without the filter ... now that more and more people know what to look for he's getting pretty easy to track. —Soap— 14:27, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
- You may also be interested in the new users Special:Contributions/Zealousking and Special:Contributions/Hurricanekatrinazeal (he was just blocked by NawlinWiki). Seems he's changing tack a bit. —Soap— 14:37, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

- Hey, don't worry, it happens to the best of us. By the way, your error took me forever to find, it was very obscure! If you haven't figured it out yet, the mistake was using * instead of + (* means 0 or more, + means 1 or more, so by saying 0 or more, "nothing" was a valid match, and everything has nothing in it somewhere) --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 11:43, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

On 6 May, you warned this user and reset his block for block evasion with Douglaseivindhall (talk · contribs). The next day he set up Douglaseivindhallgerber (talk · contribs). That seemed to me so blatant that I have not only reset his block but extended it from two weeks to a month; but feel free to alter that if you think it too severe (or not severe enough). Out of curiosity, is there no standard block notice template for sockpuppets? I couldn't find one. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 11:41, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Honestly I was planning on going to indef next, but I think 1 month is fine unless we can find anything else. As for the template, I tend to use {{sockblock}}, but it's not in twinkle or anything so you have to apply it yourself. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 11:44, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello Shirik,
There is some silliness going on from brand new/recent accounts here. As you were involved there with User talk:Justsuspendme I thought I'd advise you. Now Special:Contributions/Niceme1 and Special:Contributions/Amendone (who I welcomed!) are there. Both their first edits were there. I blanked the page [5], not sure if that was legit for me to do, but the comments there aren't meant to improve Wikipedia, seem to be pointing out past vandalism on the dab page. Hope I haven't fed the trolls!

Hi, Can you protect the article of "Mister World 2010"Mister_World_2010 because there is someone who always change it whereas it's complete. I think it's vandalism and i have to write the truth everytime and sometimes to write again the source of the informations (he put his blog at the place of the mrworld.tv). This person has an account which is Taztouzi and sometimes he edits the article without his account. He wanna be famous that's why he did it. Besides I don't wanna be blocked because of this liar that's why I need your help to stop him and to protect totally the article. He also edit the french version. Sorry if my english is bad and thanks for your help. Despebobini (talk) 17:14, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- I've protected the article, but this dispute must be resolved. You have not engaged in any discussion with the other user involved, which is unacceptable and considered edit warring. You run the risk of being blocked right now (as does the other editor). You need to contact the other user on his/her talk page or the article talk page to resolve this dispute. The article cannot remain protected like this. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 02:03, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

With that provided, blocking under WP:DUCK is appropriate, but I still see no reason to request a checkuser. Since you already took care of the busywork, I went ahead and closed/archived the case. Thanks! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:17, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Excuse me but I am also active on several other things where they would scoff at someone for using the term block. I am sorry for any incorrect terminology. Please, either change you vote to neutral or give a better reason Mr. R00t Leave me a Message 00:25, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- I suggest you research the difference between a ban and a block, as this lack of basic knowledge is precisely why you need more experience before becoming an administrator. However, even that being stated, your order of "change you [sic] vote to neutral or give a better reason" would be enough for me to oppose. Such hostile responses to opposes does not reflect well on your ability to deal with tense situations. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:27, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Thank You!
I want to express my sheer appreciation to you for userfying my article! I would love to give you a great big hug, but, this will have to suffice, consider yourself hugged! I will work to improve this writing with hopes it will become representative to the notoriety and achievement of this man, as well as CLEARLY meet the Wikipedia guidelines. If you read my personal user edit, than perhaps you understand that I am one that finds this man worthy of his accomplishments. I know a lot of people find his field to be not much more than bunk, but I strongly disagree with those people! Thanks again! - Not a problem. Also, please be sure to fix up your signature as was stated on your talk page, otherwise you're going to make SineBot very angry (as he was above). Thanks! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 14:30, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Done! Thanks, I thought I was signing it by adding the parentheses and all that, I guess I missed the squiggly signature thing. I have a question, is it possible to change the article title from Steve G. Jones (Clinical Hypnotherapist, Writer) to Just Steve G. Jones, edit his title and position into the Life text? Thanks for your input! I am open to constructive criticism, I am new at this and I'm a perfectionist, so I want my work to be correct. Thanks for any tips you can give! (talk)Cre8tivedge 14:55, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Done. The article is now at User:Cre8tivedge/Steve_G._Jones. In the near future you will be able to do this yourself (when you become autoconfirmed). When this happens, you will see a "move" option in the dropdown menu at the top near "edit". Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 15:11, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your help AGAIN! I hope I don't bug you too much, it's nice to have people respond to me, a few years back when I was on here, I had no luck with that. Perhaps because I was anonymous? (talk)Cre8tivedge 15:29, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- I think you just got unlucky :) Anyway, if you do need help the best place to ask is often the help desk. You can also the help desk's internet relay chat channel to get real-time assistance if people are around. Hope that helps, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 15:31, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Can you describe to me what the IP vandalism was that called for revision deletion? Cheers, Jclemens (talk) 15:40, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, sure. That content was redacted under RD4. It included personal information; I deleted it to minimize impact before sending it on to oversight for full suppression. They've since handled that. Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 15:42, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

That Stanley Meyer's water fuel cell → Water fuel cell move is a bit problematic (or at least needs discussion). There actually are other meanings, which appears to be why the article was moved to a more specific name a few years ago. In addition, there appears to be a lot of relevant edit-history at this name that got deleted to make way for the move. DMacks (talk) 15:17, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

- Since you archived your talk page I cannot reply there. The page is not eligible for G5 either. The editor is blocked, not banned, and there is a difference. The page was not created by an editor in violation of his/her ban, and the editor was quite obviously not blocked at the time of the edit. Furthermore, the page was deleted, but was restored, so there are no deleted edits (everything you see is what it always has been) so there was no prior deletion, either. Speedy deletion is for non-controversial deletions. The very fact that this discussion is taking place indicates it's not non-controversial. Please, if you want it to be deleted, take it to AFD. Sockpuppet of user:Larry jefferson
Hi. You unblocked user:Sally Jefferson because of doubts about the strength of the evidence that this was a sockpuppet account. I'm certain that it is indeed a sockpuppet - Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Larry jefferson/Archive mentions nonsense inserted into Hyposmocoma mediocris. Well, Hyposmocoma mothaninsect has just been speedied as a hoax based on a rewrite of Hyposmocoma mediocris. QED. andy (talk) 10:36, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Truesade
Hello, would you mind informing Truesade of the WP:ARBPIA case? nableezy - 15:21, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- I see no reason to right now as he has been blocked for a month. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:35, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hey, I just noticed that two accounts Truesade and Humanitarian Heart were blocked as possible socks. Further investigation by me revealed that Momas little helper and Nocal were also blocked for the same reason. I see a disturbing pattern here where abusive admins block editors with certain political opinions. The Blocks appear to be done rather quickly without giving the subject editors a chance to respond. I dont know much about Truesade or HHeart since their blocks were done in hasty fashion and they have as of yet, not responded. However, Moma's little Helper seems to have a good case and the block looks like
bull sh*tit has nothing to do with socking and everything to do with politics. Suggest you at least review the block issued against moma's little helper as his arguments seem logical and the block arbitrary--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 16:19, 26 May 2010 (UTC)- I thoroughly review every sock block that I do. While I cannot speak to other admins' judgement, the only time I ever do an SPI block is (1) a checkuser has informed me it's the right thing to do, or (2) under very strong evidence in accordance with WP:DUCK. I do not always release all of the information that leads me to agree with a block, as this would help those users dodge a block the next time, however I always ensure I have very compelling information to make an SPI block. If you think this was a bad idea, please feel free to offer evidence in defense. If you don't, I simply ask that you trust my judgement. As far as Momma's little helper, the evidence was not only compelling, but a checkuser found that it was the right decision. I think we have more evidence than you think we do. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:34, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- Apologies for the accusatory tone. You obviously have more experience than me in these matters. I took another look at Trusade and HHeart. It does appear that they opened accts the same day and both did edit just one article and did appear to have similar opinions but the similarities end there. While their opinions were similar they were not by any means the same. HHeart had expressed some sympathy for both sides as evidenced by this edit whereas Trusade's position was firmer evidenced by this edit. More importantly, their writing styles differed markedly. HHeart presented longer, more eloqent comments, whereas Trusade's comment, the one that he/she made seemed shorter and more concise. Also, HHeart limited his/her reverts to one whereas Trusade made four. HHeart seemed to confine his/her edits to the discussion page. In addition, prior to filing the socking complaint, an editor had intimaded that one or both these editors were socking and this provoked outrage from HHeart evidenced by this edit but did not provoke any similar outrage or expressions from Trusade. There is of course the possibility that these two editors knew each other and opened respective accounts but that is not socking. Also, the fact that they picked the Deir Yassin article to edit should not be surprising as this issue is perhaps one of the most contentious in the I/P subject area. You of course may be privy to more information than I but I ask that you review this once more. Respectfully,--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 03:09, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- The similarities don't end there; I find several similarities in the very two edits you mentioned, in fact, despite the apparent differing viewpoint. Regardless, I'm looking for a checkuser now to verify. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 04:35, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Shirik,
This IP [7] and this account [8] are the latest socks of his. Note the comment about Wilsonian Armenia, same as the previous sock [9]. Athenean (talk) 19:58, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
- This one too [10], apparently. The guy is unstoppable. Athenean (talk) 06:44, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- I hate to do this to you, but could you please open a sockpuppet investigation? The reason is because my time fluctuates wildly and it is likely that someone else will be able to come by before I have a chance to adequately investigate this. (I note that Tim Song has already blocked at least one of the users you linked to me.) Thanks, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 06:51, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- Done [11]. But something needs to be done, he creates several new ones a day. Thanks, Athenean (talk) 07:07, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- Btw, this happens every six months or so. Last time things were the same, they put him on a 6 month "softblock" (don't know what that means technically), and it seemed to have worked. Looks like it has expired, which would explain the current mayhem. Athenean (talk) 07:41, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- Unfortunately the checkusers have said that's probably not going to be possible this time around. But we can always ask for a second opinion. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 07:43, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
