Saturday November 16, 12:30 pm - 4:30pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday November 16, 2019 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.

12:30 pm - 4:30 pm in Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Uris Center for Education
81st Street entrance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

And there will be sandwiches and Wiki-Cake!

Thanks, and hope to see you there! --Wikimedia New York City Team 16:46, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey all you 79 Watchers of my talk page

I put Bath School disaster up for WP:FAC ->-> Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Bath School disaster/archive1. It would be a big help if those of you who are so inclined would go over the article, pop into that FAC nomination page and give an honest review. Support or Oppose - at this point I just need to know if there's something - refs! images! prose! - that needs fixing according to the Featured article criteria. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 17:42, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

Shearonink, it is rarely helpful to invite others to FAC, if they aren't familiar with the standards. The recent copyedit introduced prose issues, and then someone supported as if they didn't even see them :( SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:42, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Ah so sorry - I didn't know asking other editors to review was thought to be inappropriate, my apologies. Some of the processes around here sure can seem arcane and endless when one is learning one's way around...just trying to be helpful. Thanks for your advice. Template help?

DragonflySixtyseven mentioned to me that you were looking for help with a template related to one of the coronavirus articles. Not quite my article-genre, but I have done some template work. Feel free to post here, or link to some article-/template-talk, or ping me there and I can take a look. DMacks (talk) 03:49, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

DMacks Hey thanks for reaching out. It's a template in 2020 coronavirus pandemic in the United States. I noticed a Warning: Template include size is too large. I really have no idea what that means, might be the Template linked to at the bottom of the article Template:2019–20 coronavirus pandemic? I am concerned because the pandemic articles are very important to a lot of people and get a HUGE amount of traffic. I thought that someone should know - before the template causes the article to crash or whatever. Shearonink (talk) 04:25, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Template limits is technically outdated I think, but does have the right ideas...there is a limit to the template-call-depth (one template calling another calling another...) and amount of transcluded content (how many times templates are called and the size of their results overall). The effect is that at some point the parser just stops processing templates, so the reader sees the template name instead of whatever the result of the template was supposed to have been. I think the "cite" family of templates is pretty intensive and this article uses a lot of them. The two solutions are to "subst" them (which is lousy from an editing perspective) or split the article (to reduce the template load in any one of them).
Editorially, I think the article is way too long and including "full detail" about too many subtopics. Looking at WP:SIZESPLIT, the article's readable prose size of 61 kB is in the "Probably should be divided" range, and if we want to be accessible to lots of readers, we shouldn't overwhelm them (or their internet connection...all told, the page size is about 1.5 mB). That info page also mentions template-limits as a reason for splitting. DMacks (talk) 13:34, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Congratulatiions

By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this special, very exclusive award created just for we few, we happy few, this band of brothers, who have shed sweat, tears, and probably blood in order to be able to proudly claim "I too have taken an article to Featured status". Gog the Mild (talk) 15:08, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Gog. Frankly, I am stunned. Just...stunned. It's a bit of good news in the grey landscape of these strange times. I never really thought it would ever be possible. Thank you so much for all your help - Shearonink (talk) 15:17, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Earned the hard way. Very nice work. What's next on your list? Gog the Mild (talk) 09:21, 30 March 2020 (UTC)
lol. *Nothing*. I'm not sure I have any other articles that I have done most of the heavy-lifting on... I did have a List that I put up for FL status fairly recently but that didn't go well and I have no plans to try again with it anytime soon. I've been trying to update the stats for a couple of the US states' COVID-19 articles and that & life in these strange times have been keeping me busy enough. Thanks for asking though, hope you & yours are doing well - Shearonink (talk) 13:40, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

I appreciate your work on the article. However, by locking it down for an hour every afternoon and doing all the updates yourself, you’re taking the fun out of editing it for everyone else. Perhaps you can keep a copy of the county table in your sandbox and edit it freely, without interruption, then just copy-paste it in? I look forward to updating at least the graphs, but can’t because it’s locked down and you’ve done it all. If I wanted to just view stats, I would go to the TNDOH page. Thanks. Wyliepedia @ 21:12, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

CAWylie Thanks, I guess? Well... The only reason I took on updating the various charts in some of the state articles is at the time no one else was doing it and in many cases no one else is doing it. I'll wait until later in the day, swing by an article or two and no one else has stepped up to the plate to correct the outdated info. People come along and maybe update just their county or only change the total cases or adjust the number of total deaths in the infobox and then they leave all the other individual entities and stats alone and then all those other stats become outdated. For a day or two. It is what it is. I'll try to be more watchful about my time with the "in use" template. Cheers. Shearonink (talk) 21:36, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
Again, table/graph updates can be done at any time in a sandbox, then put into a main page. Just depends on how many you choose to do per state article. Today, I started having the TN graphs in a section on my normal sandbox. That way, I can tweak it at my leisure and quickly pop in elsewhere. Later, after it all settles, I can just delete the sandbox section. Myself, I’m only concerned about the TN page. Too busy offline to tweak others. Deuces. Wyliepedia @ 21:45, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
CAWylie I thought you were going to update the COVID-19 Tennessee article charts/tables/etc? I didn't want the County Table to become outdated so I went ahead and adjusted it to the official tn.gov April 4th stats. Shearonink (talk) 02:29, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
Noooo, I just like to do the graphs at the bottom. Sorry for the confusion. Wyliepedia @ 10:48, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

The decimals...

...have returned to {{2019–20 coronavirus pandemic data/United States/Tennessee medical cases chart}}! Wyliepedia @ 03:03, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

I just like to know the "why" of things. And I feel a responsibility to be as precise as possible with any COVID-19 stats that I touch. It's important what we do here on these articles, especially important because of this pandemic, it's important that people get as accurate statistics as possible however WP conveys them to our readers. Heh, I am not that particular & precise in other areas of my life but here? On Wikipedia? Yeah, here I am kind of a PITA stickler. Thank you for being willing to listen to my concerns. Your continuing work on the Tennessee COVID-19 article has been exemplary. Shearonink (talk) 03:51, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words, and to you as well! I’m just glad the TNDOH has joined our attention to detail at their page. And I hope the new format at the template doesn’t throw you; basically the semi-colons became the separators (and the added recoveries), and it seems easier to just drop in numbers, instead of adjusting widths every other day. Hopefully, this time next month, we won’t have to adjust anything and it will all be zeroes! Stay safe! Wyliepedia @ 04:04, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Zero getting sick, zero dying, everyone getting well. That would be a good day, a Very Good Day. As to upcoming changes or whatever, I'll just copy & paste the present row for the next row like I always do... Hey, is this incipient update/change posted somewhere? Will all the state and country templates change too or is this something you've come up with just for the TN Template or?... Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 04:10, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
I modeled it after New York State’s. The old one can still be used, the new one is just simpler, imo. Nothing with these templates is “required”, except for the basic format to get them to work. Wyliepedia @ 06:30, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Meet Virginia

“She doesn’t own a dress, her hair is always a mess...”

Would you like me to tweak Virginia’s COVID chart like the others, or leave it as is? Wyliepedia @ 21:07, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind offer...I think leave it as is for now. I'm practically the only one who updates the stats - main + the individual counties/cities in there on a regular basis...maybe sometime later. It will take me a while to learn the ins&outs of the new cases/recoveries/deaths bar chart on the COVID-19 Tennessee article. I would rather that the default be that the entire progress of COVID-19 be present when a reader brings up the article but that functionality isn't present. Shearonink (talk) 21:15, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Hey, Wikipedia is a collaborative effort, and should certainly be user-friendly. Any new tweaks to any table/chart/graph where this plague is concerned is really just a test by bored, crafty editors. Haha. I’ll remove the buttons to show the whole thing at TN. I thought they would be more defined anyway. One moment... Wyliepedia @ 21:20, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
 Done. Wyliepedia @ 21:23, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Checking in

Not heard a *peep* outta you around the coronaverse. Making sure you’re okay. Wyliepedia @ 08:30, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

CAWylie I decided that some real-life stuff needed to be taken care of. Plus dealing with the day-to-day changes in the stats was becoming depressing, so I thought for all of that I needed to step back for a bit. Thanks for asking - me & mine are doing ok. Shearonink (talk) 15:42, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Shearonink, I just think of it as stats, but then there’s not many cases in my county here in beautiful East TN! Take care. Wyliepedia @ 20:19, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for the thank yous

Greetings, User:Shearonink. Thank you for the various recent thank yous for edits or Talk page posts I have recently made.

I find it amazing, however, that a former Wikipedia Editor of the Week, recipient of the Featured Article Medal, the Random Act of Kindness Barnstar, the Articles of Creation Barnstar, at least five Original Barnstars, a couple Barnstars of Diligence, the Helping Hand Barnstar, a couple of Tireless Contributor Barnstars, the Working Wikipedia Barnstar, The AFC Backlog Buster Barnstar, The Special Barnstar, The GA barnstar, The Reviewer's Barnstar, a GA Cup, The Barnstar of Diplomacy, and a Kitten, somehow isn't worthy of making an edit to the John Adams article.

Wow. What kind of qualifications does it require?

Oh, I'm sorry. I've already been admonished about that: Credentials are irrelevant at Wikipedia. To hell with all that noise above and what it represents, or anything real world like it. And why it was even created here at Wikipedia. The rankest new IP editor is qualified to edit any article.

Gee, I need to sit down. I'm confused. I guess bullying and wars of attrition must rule then.

But thanks anyway for trying to help. Your instincts were true. Though you've proven by that roster of awards above a history of being unable to collaborate or function effectively in the Wikipedia universe. Oh, no. You've proven the opposite. Wow.

At least, ultimately, where it is actually worth the candle. Yours, Wikiuser100 (talk) 20:18, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

Jules Orieggia/1904, Josef Schwarzer/1907, Fritz Theile/1911, Hans Bachmann/1913, Hans Lange/1913, August Kraft/1913, Max Hansen/1913, Max Bauer1917, Louis Darragon/1918, Hans Schneider/1920, Emanuel Kudela/1920, Franz Krupkat/1927, Emil Richli/1934, Stefan Veger/1936, Karl Kaminski/1978, Emilio Ravasio/1986
Do you have any additional referenced information on the deaths of these men? Even just something like "killed during race in a cycling accident at Friedenau" or whatever would be helpful.
Also, if you look over the FLC, you'll see that the publication Sport-Album der Rad-Welt has been mentioned. I thought you might want to comment at the FLC delineating what the "Sport-Album" is. Perhaps you could also add a Note to the List stating that the "Sport-Album" is "a reference work on cycling published between [year] & [year]" or something similar w/a reference that backs up that statement. Thank again for responding, Shearonink (talk) 15:49, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok - I'll start slowly. Have a look here de:Rad-Welt - now this is in German, sorry. It says that especially at the beginning of last century until the 20s there was the cycling newspaper "Rad-Welt", and once the year they published the "Sport-Album der Rad-Welt", especially for statitics of the year and to publish photos. Because it was a daily newspaper they did not have the chance to do so during daily business. And they also mentioned the "dead of the track", which was a special column. Can you add that yourself or do I have to do that? --Nicola (talk) 16:23, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Nicola I'll try. If I run into difficulties I'll ping you here. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 16:46, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok - you are welcome :) --Nicola (talk) 16:47, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Please - do send me an email. --Nicola (talk) 17:50, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
I attempted a fix that I think does the job. Thanks. If I run into further difficulties, I'll get in touch. Shearonink (talk) 17:56, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

Sun Aug 16: Great American Wiknic NYC & Beyond

August 16, 3pm: Great American Wiknic

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our annual summer Great American Wiknic, this year being held virtually.

We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person!

We encourage you to call in for the second part from a local park or natural site and share it on the video stream, as well as sharing your favorite picnic grub or other special foods with us.

Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda. The Wiknic is taking the place of "WikiWednesday" this month, so we will also include salon and knowledge-sharing workshop aspects.

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm online via YouTube (watch our national panel's livestream, and participate by text chat)
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm online via Zoom (participate by videoconference with NYC community)

We especially encourage folks to share your parks and foods on screen, and add your 3-minute lightning talks to our roster for the Zoom portion, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues!

Dahlias in Walsdorf

I like today's Main page, with the TFA (thank you for your FAC comments!) on the anniversary day (of both dedication and our concert), a DYK, and a great photographer who didn't make it soon enough, Jürgen Schadeberg, - more on my talk, mostly about the tribute to Brian who shared his sources. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:46, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Brian is certainly missed. And what a beautiful article. Sorry to hear about Mr. Schadeberg. Shearonink (talk) 01:04, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

I am fine finding a new location, but it is very pertinent to the case. It is not meant to slander or provide justification for any of their actions. Archiving

Appears to only be an issue on that one page. Can easily be a manual fix. Thanks for letting me know. Right cite (talk) 20:49, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Right cite Please don't touch the pages. It's a mess. Let me get someone above my pay grade in there to fix it. Shearonink (talk) 20:52, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Fixed, at DIFF. Right cite (talk) 20:54, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing it I guess but besides the mis-named archive page - OneClickArchiver is handy but is not infallible - you do know that you archived a post that should have been left on the page right? You're archiving posts that were less than a month old but ok whatever, I give up. Shearonink (talk) 21:03, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
Shearonink, thanks for your feedback. I only archived posts of things that were addressed. Closed discussions. Old deletion notices for since closed debates. Peer reviews that said at the top they were closed. Etc. Right cite (talk) 21:18, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Comments

Regarding this, if you look at the other contributions by the author of those pages, particularly those that mention organizations and the "classroom" one then do a bit of off-wiki digging, there is good reason to think that someone may have given him bad information, perhaps maliciously. That would be sad on so many levels, but unfortunately it's just as likely if not more likely in my mind than bad-faith editing by the author. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 17:42, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Maybe he's a Nice Guy who's being taken advantage of or even an undisclosed Paid editor or an internet troll/vandal/jokester. All we have to go by is the evidence and that evidence is his contributions (and yes, I've done my share of off-WP looking about, I tried to tell him maybe he should change his account-name...) At this point all I care about is that it looks like private individuals are somehow being outed on this platform. I'm surprised the whole lot hasn't been deleted by now but whatevs. Shearonink (talk) 18:26, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt - Precious is one of my most-treasured awards around here. And that blue is one of my favorite colors too - thank you for the reminder. OH, and, btw, I LOVE that pic of the 2 women together - the teacher & the student. What a hero Salomon-Lindberg was! I read her article and wanted to know more about exactly how she got her husband out of Sachsenhausen and how they *both* escaped Westerbork. Even read the deletion discussion...that sure was a speedy delete nom, congrats on rescuing her article. Shearonink (talk) 15:14, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for the lovely greeting, however, one "br" is not closed so will confuse the colours in edit mode, - I changed it here, and on my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:07, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

CIR

Regarding this, based on my memory of the content of now-deleted articles, I think the main issue we are having is a person with severe WP:CIR/maturity issues who, despite editing in good faith, doesn't understand that he doesn't get to make the rules, gets frustrated as a result, and allows us to see his frustration.

To put put it another way, I don't doubt the sincerity of his original draft submissions, but his lack of "CIR" and maturity mean this is not a good place for him to spend his time. It will only lead to frustration for everyone. Showing him the door is an act of kindness for him over and above the usual "it's necessary for the encyclopedia" reasons. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 🎄 21:02, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

All we can go by is the evidence - the actions of this account on WP. It could be a troll, could have mental/comprehension issues, could be a sockmaster, could be an LTA, "he" could be a woman, could be whatever. Whatever might be actual and true, this account's contributions would indicate an ongoing massive time-sink, of clean-ups, of attempted interventions with no response plus the bonus on the way out the door of multiple incidents of boorish behavior. Sayonara indeed. Shearonink (talk) 21:38, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Ramsdell Theatre

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Ramsdell Theatre you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Your GA nomination of Ramsdell Theatre

The article Ramsdell Theatre you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Ramsdell Theatre for issues which need to be addressed. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of The Rambling Man -- The Rambling Man (talk) 12:20, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

I'll stop editing for awhile and let you take over. It will give me a break. There is a lot of issues listed. I done about half - I'll let you tackle some. Thanks for help.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:03, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Doug Coldwell Heh, I am taking a break too for a while...checking all the en-dashes and em-dashes was excruciating... Life is interfering with Wikipedia-ing. Shearonink (talk) 20:13, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
I can continue working on the issues tomorrow. Would that work for you. Schedule?--Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:18, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
Sure. I'm almost at calling it quits for tonight. Have other things on my plate tomorrow. Shearonink (talk) 20:28, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
Doug Coldwell It seems to me that one of the major issues for the reviewer - in terms of overall work & time-spent - will probably be making sure that the refs are consistent in their style etc. ("Refs should be complete, i.e. publisher, date, access date, website etc.") I will take that on at some point tomorrow - checking alllll the refs and adjusting them when necessary - so you can leave the refs alone and concentrate on other items. Shearonink (talk) 21:28, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
Finished with all the other parts. You can notify The Rambling Man when you are done that we have addressed all the issues.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 19:48, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
Doug Coldwell Apparently a massive edit conflict happened when I was fixing the refs - I thought you were done but apparently not? Don't worry, I'll go back in and get the refs cleaned up. Lol, again. Shearonink (talk) 21:15, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
Sorry about that. I'm definitely through now. Will let you handle it from here. I'll let you notify The Rambling Man whenever you are all Done. You are doing great work - thanks! The last few Good Articles I got were done by the reviewer The Rambling Man. During the last GA drive they had (October 2020) I made 34 Good Articles during the 31 day month. So far this month I have made 14 Good Articles. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:47, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
It's fine, no worries. Nice to have the review and resulting adjustments go so quickly. All done now. Shearonink (talk) 21:50, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
GREAT. Do you want me to notify The Rambling Man -or- do you want to do it. I don't mind doing it.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:56, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
I just did. Pinged him to the GA Review page to let him know we adjusted/corrected everything. Shearonink (talk) 21:58, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
O.K. I think he is in England so about 6 hours ahead of me (6 pm) here in Michigan (in other words it's midnight in England). He probably will respond in about 12 hours or so.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:06, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
