The MetFashion Wikipedia Edit-a-thon NYC was held Saturday September 7, 2019 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This was in part a follow-up to our recent Wiki Loves Pride Edit-a-thon, and followed a similar format. We plan to expand this edit-a-thon, however, with a larger academic/student participation.
Please bring your own laptop to this event if you can, it's much better for Wikipedia editing than mobile.
We partially coordinated with the international Wiki Loves Fashion campaign.
Topics
[edit]The event focused on Wikipedia:WikiProject Fashion topics for basic clothing types that can be illustrated by the Met collection, and also past Costume Institute exhibitions.
It's the last weekend for Camp: Notes on Fashion, and we will have an intro talk to the exhibit by a guest from the Costume Institute, and participants will then be able to visit it on their own. Galleries will be open this evening until 9 p.m.
Academic participants are also encouraged to fill this out form and share it with colleagues: edu.met.wikithon.org

Wikidata tasks
[edit]Visualizing collections
[edit]As structured metadata, Wikidata allows for sophisticated visualizations of connections in its knowledge graph. They are technically quite easy: you just need to use your imagination and research some of the connections. Afterwareds, Wikidata Query does all the hard work. Here's an example of a Wikidata knowledge graph showing the connections among museums, painters, fashion and ultimately, Rita Hayworth.
Click to see the knowledge graph live, draggable and reconfigurable.
You can make your own by editing the Wikidata SPARQL query, and providing a list of your own Wikidata items (Q numbers).
