A barnstar

The Copyeditor's Barnstar
For all your work that brought HMS Ark Royal (91) to Featured status. Benea (talk) 14:12, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

To be honest, I've never given a barnstar before, not because I've never felt anybody deserved it, but rather that it didn't seem as if I had the authority to declare various bits of work worthy, if you know what I mean. I have no such doubts though that your work on Ark Royal is both worthy, and that you deserve some sort of acknowledgement. This seemed appropriate, though the description seems to imply that it's just for 'spelling, grammar and punctuation', and I think your work went far beyond that! Best wishes, Benea (talk) 14:12, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I suspect you'll regret that! To be honest, my other project at the moment is the Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson article. There were murmurs about returning it to a featured article in time for a main page appearance on the 250th anniversary of his birth (23rd September this year). I've no particular problems about working on the content (though there's a lot that's missing, that I've recently been trying to fill in), but it's in dire need of copyediting and restructuring. No worries though if this is something that you don't want to take on, after progressing one article from B to FA class, the last thing I feel like doing is jumping in with another! ttfn, Benea (talk) 17:54, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Saberwyn, This discussion on my talk page may be of interest to you - Abraham, B.S. has noticed that the AWM has a statement on their website which says that all their pre-1959 photos are not covered by copyright. By the way, congratulations to Benea and yourself for the Ark Royal article sailing through its FA nomination. I'd like to claim that my critical comments helped the article develop, but I suspect that I just bugged you both ;-) Nick Dowling (talk) 12:04, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Redirect of Ordo Xenos

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Ordo Xenos, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Ordo Xenos is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Ordo Xenos, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To see the user who deleted the page, click here CSDWarnBot (talk) 19:21, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Ibram Gaunt

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Ibram Gaunt, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. --EEMIV (talk) 15:06, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:UltrasaurusZBC.JPG

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:UltrasaurusZBC.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:28, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Viper mark 7s.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you for uploading Image:Zoidslogo.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

Project activity

File:W40000 Symbol.png

This message is a test to check to see if members of the Warhammer 40K Project are still online, active and interested in helping the project. If you are no longer interested in the project all you need to do is...nothing! If you don't respond to this I'll take your name off the list and you'll never here from us again. If you're the proactive type you can remove the name yourself or talk to me and I'll do it.

If you are still interested in helping out the 40K project or otherwise still want to be listed there you can say so in response to this message on your talk page or on mine. Alternately you can add our new userbox ({{User WikiProject Warhammer 40,000}}) to your userpage and I'll take that as a response. The userpage doesn't automatically include people in a category of members yet, but it might in the future.

We've assessed most of the articles in the project on the Version 1.0 assessment scale (the table on the project page should take a few days to update) but we need to push to get the core articles in the project up to GA status. Thanks for all your help. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help the project along. Protonk (talk) 21:13, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:HMAS melbourne 2 crest.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:HMAS melbourne 2 crest.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Dawgs

Your post on the AfD well was stated, but I'm still a little baffled on the nomination on that article. I hadn't in fact realized that the term "Wiredawg" was one of the big issues. I thought it was clear from the article (and the related websites) that this was a term to describe Air Force personnel in two job categories. It's a bit unusual for a title, but consider the alternative: have you checked out what the job titles are actually called? And as far as media coverage, as the military is very insular, I'm not surprised really that there's not more outside coverage. I actually think the wiredawg.net website in and of itself makes it pretty clear that this is a legitimate and established descriptive term. And regarding the other issues: I agree!, but those seem to require editorial fixes, not deletion. Sorry to post this here. I think I've posted enough in that AfD so I leave it to others to weigh in, or for the decision to be made based on the votes and reasonings already there. But I just wanted to give you my response on the issues you raised. :) Take care. ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:48, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Notabtility / significant coverage

Hi Saberwyn

Further to your note to ChildofMidnight, here are some of my thoughts on what "significant coverage" means with respect to the WP:N:

There are lots of different interpretations of what "significant coverage" means. My view is that it requires that the coverage be in sources that are not intended to be exhaustive lists of things (i.e., directories of any sort).
In fact, the janitorial and plumbing professions are covered widely and frequently in numerous sources other than directories. And possibly so are cable splicers, etc. But there is no evidence that military cable splicers in particular are significantly covered on their own in reliable sources other than directories.
Logically, if everything that is reliably covered in detail merits its own article, then Wikipedia becomes the union of every directory ever published, which clearly is not the thrust of WP:NOTDIR.
Others disagree (see WP:Articles for deletion/FCS Control Systems) but they are terribly wrong and misguided (despite acting always in good faith). ;)

Thoughts? I'd like to see these ideas added to the policy, presonally. Bongomatic 13:14, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

HMAS Tobruk categorisation

Hi Saberwyn, Given that Category:Royal Australian Navy amphibious warfare vessels is a sub-category of Category:Ships of the Royal Australian Navy I don't think that Tobruk should be in both categories. Would it be OK if I removed it from Category:Ships of the Royal Australian Navy, or do you think that doubling up the categorisation is useful? (which I guess it might be given that Tobruk is mildly famous and is a one-off). Nick-D (talk) 09:18, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

OK, that makes sense, and I'll leave well alone for now so that the categorisation is consistent. I agree that the RAN category tree is a mess - it seems to have been shoe-horned into the same category structure as that used for the USN, and this isn't sensible. I'd suggest a category structure with Category:Ships of the Royal Australian Navy as the top-level cat and then sub-categories for each of the main types of ships the RAN has operated. Separating the ships into different time-periods and active/inactive categories doesn't work in my view. Nick-D (talk) 09:50, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Would it be feasible to limit the category tree to the sub-cats which are visible on the Category:Ships of the Royal Australian Navy page? (give or take a few - would organising the ships by class be sensible? - it would work for frigates, but be a waste of time for amphibious assault ships) - I think that this would work given that the RAN hasn't operated all that many ships of any type (even the 50 Bathurst class vessels are the only corvettes its ever operated). It might also be possible to use bots for re-classifications to limit the amount of grunt work needed, but don't quote me on that! Nick-D (talk) 10:03, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Unrelated, low priority, ping here. Thanks // FrankB 20:17, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
That structure looks perfect to me. If you're happy with it, we probably need to propose it on the Wikiproject ships talk page before it goes ahead as the current structure was, if I remember correctly, the outcome of a project-wide categorisation effort. Nick-D (talk) 07:10, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
OK, here's some examples of ships which don't fall into an obvious category. I prefer 'X of the Royal Australian Navy' as this is consistent with other categorisation.
I've also just speedy-deleted those two categories you nominated for deletion as the categories are now empty. Nick-D (talk) 07:52, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
Those look spot on to me. I think that the multiple categories are fine for every case where you've suggested that adding the ship to several new categories would be over-categorisation. I think that HMAS Wyatt Earp would best belong in Category:Auxiliary ships of the Royal Australian Navy by the way. Nick-D (talk) 09:40, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Units of measure

Hi -- If you are going to have a go at integrating info from http://www.bta.mil/fedebiz/PRIVATE/EDIT/document/lfwg/flissue.pdf into wikipedia I do wonder what we need of (a) articles about each codes eg CZ redirects to volume where it is defined as 1m^3; (b) Do we have a list of units anywhere? I've found list of humorous units and lists of systems of measurement but I haven't yet found lists of units eg units of length containing metre, foot, yard, mile, rod, pole, perch, etc etc; (c) Do we need articles on the DoD coding schemes themselves - eg We appear to have an article ANSI ASC X12 but it has less in it than I would hope and I haven't tracked down one on DoD unit of issue and purchase unit codes. I haven't done anything about it yet as it seemed too hard! -- SGBailey (talk) 23:07, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

I just shot myself in the foot with that units of length example, it exists! However Is there a units of volume? (cubic metre, pint, gallon, litre, fluid ounce, US gallon, etc. -- SGBailey (talk) 23:09, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

HMAS Castlemaine

During the time when Melbourne paid off, I was serving in Navy Office. We received a minute one day asking if we needed anything off Melbourne for security purposes. As I was involved in the restoration work on Castlemaine at the time through my membership of the Australian Branch of the Royal Naval Amatuer Radio Society, I contacted the guys at the Maritime Trust and asked them if they thought anything from the old girl would be of use. I ended up with a wish list which I contacted the people in charge of the ship and managed to secure a large number of items such as proper naval electrical switches, stanchions, 240 VDC vent fans, 240 VDC to 240 VAC motor generators and all sort of stuff, about 3 tons of it in all. As it happenned, the guys in Navy I first approached got the gear off and loaded up on three pallets at Zetland within a week or so of me first contacting them, but the paper trail in Canberra is tortuous and it took IIRC 6-9 months before we finally got the green light officially, by which time the ship had transferred from Navy control to the Department of Admin Services. The Minister for Admin Services took one look at the inventory of what we had on the pallets and the book replacement value of the gear ($28,000) and decided that the Government had done enough by giving the Trust the ship and that we could pay for the items. Lousy sod. I got a very embarrassed phone call from someone over in Admin Services and, as he knew well we could not afford that sort of money, we talked around the point for a bit and then he said that he could not give us the gear, but he could sell it to us for whatever price we agreed on, he asked me if $300 was OK. I wrote out the cheque that day.

Now I know that none of this can go in the article as yet - original research and all that - but perhaps knowing this might help if you come across something and it might help join some dots. Nick Thorne talk 12:39, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Your hard work is about to be deleted from Wikipedia

The article you created, Command Wolf is about to be deleted from Wikipedia.

There is an ongoing debate about whether your article should be deleted here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Command Wolf. The faster your respond, the better chance the article you created can be saved. This is because deletion debates only stay open for a few days, and the first comments are usually the most important.

There are several tools and other editors who can help you keep the page from being deleted forever:

1. You can list the page up for deletion on Article Rescue Squadron. If you need help listing your page, add a comment on the Article Rescue Squadron talk page.

2. You can request a mentor to help explain to you all of the complex rules that editors use to get a page deleted, here: Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User. But don't wait for a mentor to respond on the deletion page.
3. When try to delete a page, veteran editors love to use a lot of rule acronyms. Don't let these acronyms intimidate you.
Here is a list of your own acronyms you can use yourself: WP:Deletion debate acronyms which may support the page you created being kept.
Acronyms in deletion debates are sometimes incorrectly used, or ignore rules or exceptions.

If your page is deleted, you still have many options available. travb (talk) 01:17, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Canterbury

Hi Saberwyn - you recently removed the blank fields on the infobox of HMNZS Canterbury (F421), a move that I reverted. The reason is that without the blank fields, it becomes much more onerous to add the missing information if someone later comes across the data. Unless he/she is very experienced in the use of that template, he may not even KNOW that there is a field for that piece of data. Therefore, please keep such "blank spaces" as they are - they have a use. Thanks and happy editing. Ingolfson (talk) 05:04, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello Saberwyn - I apperiate you informing me of your porposed deletion of North Wood Camp. Only publish information on North Wood Camp of Greater YMCA is located on their website. I physically went to the camp itself couple decades ago and its still there. I am admittively new at wikipedia and do this part-time. I still learning properly do this. So I am uncertain how else to bring standards of the listing up from what resources I can find of it. There no listing of YMCA of Greater Boston on Wikipedia only on their own website. [1] Colt9033 (Colt9033) 08:10, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Banana boat (boat), and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.boatsdepot.org/boats/types/banana.asp. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 00:55, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Banana boat (boat) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. AeonicOmega talk 00:55, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

When performing some tweaks on Nigel Coates (admiral), I found that most of the text of the article appears to be copypasted from his Department of Defence biography page, a website which is copyrighted to the Australian government. As such, I have tagged most of the article as a copyright violation, and have listed it at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2009 May 25.

I've avoided giving you {{Nothanks-web}}, the templated response to these situations, because I respect you and your other contributions too much to template a regular. That said, reviewing the template text may help you decide what to do next. -- saberwyn 09:28, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Howdy! Thanks for your message, and thanks for not treating me like an infant or an imbecile - I can assure it is appreciated.
I have a number of comments, some of them philosophical, some of them informative, and some of them simply my opinion.
Informative:
  • I'm not the only contributor to this article - you may want to inform User talk:Abraham, B.S. and User talk:Nick-D too. To be honest, I would expect both of them can (and would/will) do a better job of resolving this than me.
You may also want to put something on one of the relevant Milhist pages - even more people who are even more competant raed those.
Opinion:
  • That template is really ugly, and completely unhelpful. It makes it impossible to determine what you are complaining about. Surely there's a better way to do it than that?
Philosophical:
  • I do not believe one can copyright facts.
Never-the-less, one doesn't have to be a genius to see that sections of the Coates article are indeed a "perfect subset" of the ADF bio, and yes, that should NOT be the case. (I'm surprised I was so lazy.)
I'm sure you agree that there's no denying that the guy is notable, and that it would be stupid to delete the article due to copyvio when it wouldn't be hard to extract the facts and present them with different wording which is not copyvio.
So, please suggest a good way forward.
My (no doubt biassed) opinion is that getting rid of that ugly template would be a good start. Then enlisting one or more of the many competent wiki-military-historians would be a good next step.
Thanks for your rational and considered approach to the problem. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:10, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
I understand where you are coming from, but the main problem is that you have taken the information on the ADF website, copied them word-for-word (including formatting and spelling errors), and effectively claimed the work of another as your own. The facts themselves cannot be copyrighted, but the wording and presentation can, and although unlikely to happen, as the editor who contributed the copyrighted information, the Australian Government could take you to court for copyright infringement.
The template used is the one indicated by the Wikipedia:Copyright violations policy for situations when all versions of an article contain the copyrighted information. I think (but do not no for sure) that it is intended to mask the copyrighted information and make known that action is being taken to correct the situation. Per insturctions, I also listed the article at Wikipedia:Copyright problems, where admins who know more about dealing with copyright issues than you or I can look at the situation and advise the best course of action. Until then, I think the template should remain and I don't think there's much either of us can do. -- saberwyn 22:41, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
"I don't think there's much either of us can do." - I disagree. It's not like you've opened Pandora's Box and can't close it.
I have rewritten the article; there should now be no copyright problems.
I suggest you now remove the offending text and remove the template; I don't see any point in involving lots of other people now that the issue has been addressed and the problem now solved. I would have done it myself, but I expect that there would be people who would get upset, so I haven't.
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 15:13, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I've added the battle honours back to the infobox. I made the same error before, but it seems that they are inherited and should be shown. Mjroots (talk) 04:29, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

I was always under the impression that only the battle honours earned by a particular ship should be shown, as although inherited honours belong to the same name, they belong to different ships. I just wanted to drop in and say hello. I know wikipedia isn't supposed to be used for this, but oh well :P I'm also Australian, and am writing a novel. I thought we could share ideas and tips? Also, what part of Aus are you from? Hope to hear from you. --Flashflash; 19:58, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
