Learning More About Project Management

Hi Rosie- I am hoping you can give me some advice. I am working with a couple people to take on leadership of a project. There hasn't been anyone at the helm of the project for a few years. The problem is that we have no idea what we are doing. We need to set priorities and learn about evaluating entries that are part of the project. You are one of the best project managers I know, so I am hoping you can help me figure out how to learn how to do these things. Is there anything on Wiki? Is there actual training? How do you do these things? Thanks in advance and happy new year! --LibraryGurl (talk) 18:43, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Librarygurl, first and foremost: just go for it. You'll learn by doing. As for how do I do these things, I started managing projects in 1987, became a project manager in 1990, a contract manager in 1993, studied project management as part of my MBA (graduated 1997), and at some point during the 1990s, became a member of the Project Management Institute, though I never sat for the exam. I don't know of any on wiki pm training. But there are some good books... maybe starting with "Project Management for Dummies" (not that you're a dummie!). One last thing: I've relied on checklists through thick and thin, and I'd say most project managers do, too. Good luck, and ok to ping me via email with other questions/comments if you wish. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:47, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Rosie! I will check out the book and let you know if I have any questions. I appreciate this a lot! --LibraryGurl (talk) 17:36, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Sugar Bunker

Sugar Bunker

Hey, can you find anything on Sugar Bunker, Nevada? Near Area 51. I spotted it on Google maps but we don't have an article!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:54, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Found this, but not really anything else. I'm guessing that the info is classified because of the Nevada Test Site; notice proximity to the Nevada National Security Site Device Assembly Facility and Creech Air Force Base. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:07, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
Funny thing is on google maps it's labelled as if it's like a small town or something!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:29, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Your opinion wanted

Rosie: I'm looking for feedback on this and subsequent discussion rgdg inclusivity and correcting systemic bias. It's been bugging me and I need an outside opinion. Could I have made my point better? Was I out of line or even wrong in my perception about these articles being singled out due to subject matter? Why is there such reaction to what to me is an obvious systemic problem, and how do we change opinions on this? - Brianhe (talk) 18:19, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Brianhe: From 60,000 feet (18,000 m)... (a) different people have different perceptions, and (b) not easy to change people's opinions. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:04, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

DYK for Oliveto Citra

On 28 January 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Oliveto Citra, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that on May 24, 1985, over 100 villagers in Oliveto Citra claimed to have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Oliveto Citra. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Oliveto Citra), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Feature article link?

Hi, Rosie— I was just looking at your user page and saw the gray star in the upper right: hovering over it indicated that you helped the article "No FAs promoted" become a featured article, but when I click on the star, I am told that no such article actually exists. Am just a bit confused, is all, and wondered whether I am doing something wrong somehow or if the link on your user page has some kind of error in it (or if maybe the star is only meant to be a placeholder). Anyhow, that's all! KDS4444 (talk) 19:14, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi KDS4444 - I don't recall when the gray star was added to my userpage or who added it, but I agree that it's probably a placeholder as I haven't promoted an FAs. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:43, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
Hm. Well, it looks like it was added on Nov. 1st of last year by a user with an IP address, 172.56.0.43 with the edit summary "Time to focus". Weird. But there you have it. Whoever that user was, he/ she was pretty familiar with Wikimarkup. But no matter. I suppose perhaps I will see you at the LA conference on the 18th? KDS4444 (talk) 00:30, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

I've commented on the talk page, but I noticed you are the original author of the articles on Glacier Creek and Crow Creek. The articles identify Crow as a tributary of Glacier, but that just isn't possible. Crow Creek is near Girdwood, which isn't even on the Kenai Peninisula, and Glacier Creek is near Sunrise, on the opposite side of Turnagin Arm. I've double checked with GNIS since so many feature names are re-used in Alaska, and it came back with no results for a Crow Creek on the Kenai. Beeblebrox (talk)

Hi Beeblebrox and thanks for reaching out to me. I'm not sure what you're saying. The articles are almost entirely based on PD info. Is the info in the PD sources wrong, and the article content is wrong as a result? Or does the content in the articles not accurately reflect what the sources say? In either case, I hope you improve the articles if you have time/inclination to do so. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:17, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
I think I may have figured out what's going on and will describe it on the talk page. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:33, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

April 2017 editathons

Hi Rosie. I've prepared editathon pages for Psychologists, Book artists and CEE Countries together with an invitation to all three on the Outreach page. I've used the international model but I really don't know if it's worthwhile making another international mailing. I think most of our "international" partners are on our main mailing list anyway. Perhaps you can look through everything as errors often occur with all the cutting and pasting. Please let me know if the invitation is OK too as there will be separate mailings in connection with #39 and #40. Enjoy your trip to Berlin.--Ipigott (talk) 16:07, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, Ipigott for creating the pages and invitation. The invitation is particularly attractive this time, IMHO. I made some minor changes, and then (as you can see) MassMessaged to the standard list. I agree, there isn't a strong need to reach out to the international list at this time. I'll stay in touch while I'm gone, tweeting from my personal Twitter account, which is the same as my wiki username. I think we'll be in the same time zone. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 18:46, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your final touches, including an interesting image for the psychologists. Yes, Berlin and Luxembourg are in the same time zone. We change the clocks to summertime tonight. Gute Reise!--Ipigott (talk) 09:46, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
Danke schön, Ipigott. Re the image, it was the only img I could find from Asia or Africa for either event focus (psychologists or book artists). As much as Wikipedia lags re content gender gap, Commons has a long way to go, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:17, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

section headings on WIR

I reverted your format changes. Hope that's OK. It was just fine the way it was initially.198.58.162.200 (talk)

  • I thought pulling the AfDs together in one "Noticeboard" section would draw more eyes to the group as it's easy for some of them to get lost between all the other sections (looks like 16 in 5 days). I'm also ok with not doing this. Copying in a few more editors to the convo in case they have thoughts on the subject @Ipigott, Megalibrarygirl, Montanabw, SusunW, and Victuallers. But in any case, thank you for keeping a close eye on WiR-scope articles at AfD; it's much appreciated! --Rosiestep (talk) 20:01, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
I like having them grouped together by the week. For some reason that talk page in particular does not always show up on my watchlist when additions are made. Though I try to check it several times a day, I find that I miss things. Sometimes I remember to go to the view history and check what has changed and sometimes I am just too busy to do that. I think if they are grouped by week, I would be less concerned that I might miss something. By the by, I love that 198.58.162.200 (how do you ping an IP address?) is posting these regularly. Sometimes I weigh in. Others I just contribute a ref or an edit and move on, but it really does help to have them posted on the talk page. SusunW (talk) 21:08, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
I have the same problem as Susun with the main talk page. I look at the history every day as many of the edits are made to existing sections rather than new ones. The advantage of having the new AfDs at the bottom of the page is that they can be easily identified by everyone. Posting them has been extremely effective. It might be a good idea to delete those which are accepted as "Keep" as otherwise there must be many editors who waste time looking at solved problems. I hope 198.58.162.200 can keep up posting these and working on many of the articles. It's a great help.--Ipigott (talk) 06:54, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
I can't see the new noticeboard at all. :( Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:30, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
