Possible Cite template parameter cleanup bot

Hi Rjwilmsi - some time ago you offered to help with a bot to fix some of the issues I raised on the AWB talk page. I've finally got my thoughts together on this. Here's what I think could be automated to sweep up as much as possible whilst avoiding false positives:

• publisher = (list of agencies) --> agency=agency [e.g. Reuters, Associated Press, Agence France-Presse]
• publisher = (list of common newspapers, magazines and journals) --> work = publication [if original parameter value italicised, italics removed; if linked, linking retained]
• publisher = ''(list of common publishers)'' ---> publisher = publisher [i.e. removing incorrect italicisation from publishers such as BBC, ESPN]

There are some other related improvements I'd like to see made, but I think they would be more controversial, so perhaps should be handled separately:

• removing linking from common agencies, publishers and publications
• removing the publisher parameter from common publications [e.g. in "work=Time | publisher=Time-Life Inc" the 'publisher' adds nothing useful ]. Perhaps there could be a process to remove the 'publisher' parameter whenever the work has a WP article.

How does this look to you? I have no experience with bots, so I wouldn't know where to start, but I do have regexes to cover the main points. Colonies Chris (talk) 11:30, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

The bot to do this would not be difficult based on the ideas above, the effort would be in creating the appropriate set of lists. I'm not convinced any delinking should be done, nor do I understand why BBC is a publisher. Anyway, please come back to me when you think wider discussion has confirmed consensus for this task and I'll set up some bot logic. Rjwilmsi 07:58, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

My last two suggestions were just raising the possibility for discussion, not expecting them to be in the proposed bot, so please disregard them for the time being. I don't understand why BBC would not be a publisher (along with CNN, ESPN, CBS etc.) How else should they be categorised within the Cite template? I can provide regex lists of agencies, publishers and publications that I currently use in my AWB sessions. Where do you suggest would be an appropriate forum for further discussion? I don't see why BBC wouldn't be |work=. As far as I'm aware they have journalists/reporters who write stories for the BBC for TV/website and don't republish other news sources' content, so are equivalent to a newspaper. Though perhaps |work=BBC News is most accurate. As for where to discuss I don't know, template talk pages then Wikipedia talk:Citation templates next? Rjwilmsi 12:29, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

BLP others

I have reverted RjwilmsiBot a number of times now, for adding persondata on Nigahiga, a bio, which isn't a person. Should articles with {{BLP others}}, on the talk page, be black listed for persondata? 117Avenue (talk) 02:46, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Foreign Language Grammar

ref=harv

I am going to revert this edit as I think that putting the parameter ref=harv first is better style as it is easier to spot whether it has been applied to all the books to which short citations are linked. I would appreciate it if you would alter you bot's algorithm so that it does not move this parameter about. -- PBS (talk) 11:24, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

The parameters were not moved, duplicates were removed. If you want to change the article then please remove the duplicates from the end of the cites. Rjwilmsi 11:26, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Page numbers with hypens

You should not change {{harv|Author|year|p=4-7}} to {{harv|Author|year|pp=4–7}}. See this bot edit. Many texts use chapter-hypen-page numbers. Glrx (talk) 16:03, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I've amended the skip logic so it's not done by the bot task (only with my manual review, where I'd see the wiki comment). I've also changed the article to use a non-breaking hyphen, this means it's not picked up as a possible page range by bots. Thanks Rjwilmsi 16:09, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

AWB: Alerts and Pre-parsed mode

Regarding this, did you ever find a way to make AWB alerts interact with pre-parsed mode, or is that going to be an upcoming feature? It would clearly be helpful, and I don't think its usefulness would be confined to just me. Jesse V. (talk) 23:33, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
