Captains of Assurance
[edit]Hi, I've been working on HMS Assurance (1780) and wondered whether you may be able to clear something up for me. In BWAS you have Captain (Commander?) Wyndham Bryer commanding Assurance from December 1794, but I believe Bryer died in October that year.[1] Is this an error or is something else going on here? Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 02:31, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

- Looking at sources, there are contradictory reports in the archives as to who was in command of Assurance in the 1794-76 period, but I agree with you that almost certainly it could not have been Wyndham Bryer at any time because - as you say - he died (as a Commander in rank, not a Captain) in October 1794. Without physically looking at the archives again (it's no longer possible for me to go there and inspect them) I cannot say when Velters Cornewall Berkeley (who recommissioned the ship in April 1793) actually relinquished command, but it could have then been Charles Sawyer who was in command until 1795 when Charles Ogle took over until the ship paid off at Sheerness in September 1795. My suspicion (although without any evidence) is that it might have been Sawyer who took over from Berkeley in December 1794, and then Commander Ogle briefly in April 1795, but this is only my hypothesis based on conflicting records. The practical step is for you to go and look at the Captain's log for this ship for this commission; if you can do so (or get someone to act for you), I'd be grateful if you can advise me of the result. 2023 population updates for Sumatran provinces, also for Sumatran regencies and cities
[edit]Hello, Rif Winfield, can you do population updates for all Sumatran provinces, also its regencies and cities? 2001:448A:11A5:15F8:A8EF:C642:AA17:B482 (talk) 11:28, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, it is my intention to do so, but it takes some time to update every single article for provinces, cities and regencies. However, please note that a few regencies (about 2 or 3% of them) fail to publish these figures when asked for by BPS, or they publish ones which are wildly inaccurate (for example, some publish the same figuures as the previous year), so those might be difficult to give. - Thank you for noticing me, Rif Winfield. 2001:448A:11A8:1659:417F:FA54:2D88:274B (talk) 09:29, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- No problem! Rif Winfield (talk) 10:10, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
Wikidata
[edit]Hi, Rif Winfield. I see you are doing a great work creating articles for Indonesian districts. It would be nice if you could then link those articles to the already existing items in Wikidata. You can see here how I did it for Cilodong. And you can ask me if you have further doubts. Alavense (talk) 11:03, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- Dear Alavense, please may I leave it to you to link these articles to Wikidata? You will note that I have created new articles for every district (those which were not already linked) in Bekasi City, Bekasi Regency, Bogor City, Bogor Regency, Tangerang Regency, South Tangerang City and now Depok City; my next task (over the next 3 days) will be to do the same for those Tangerang City districts which are not yet created; I hope in due course to do the same for all the kecamatan in Jakarta Special District/Province (if and when I can find adequate time) in order to complete coverage of Jabotabek. I should be obliged if you could check which districts are not yet linked and then do the links for me. Incidentally, please tell me if you spot any errors in the new articles. (talk) 11:22, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- Sure. I can help with that, no problem. But, in the future, it would be easier if you do it immediately after you create the article. It takes no more than a couple of seconds. Kind regards, Alavense (talk) 10:54, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- OK, noted. Rif Winfield (talk) 11:24, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
