Mt. Etna eruption

An October 2002 eruption of Mount Etna, a volcano on the Italian island of Sicily, as seen from the International Space Station. Etna is the largest of Italy's three active volcanoes and one of the most active in the world. This eruption, one of Etna's most vigorous in years, was triggered by a series of earthquakes. Ashfall was reported as far away as Libya, 600 km (373 mi) to the south.

Thanks

Thanks for the little formatting help on my talk page. Didn't know that trick worked for that.   The Transhumanist   18:47, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

You're welcome. There's nothing like a lot of trial-and-error to figure those things out. Rfrisbietalk 19:00, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Dog portal

Got your message about photos, will do (but not now, I've been on the computer for a while and my eyes are dead, otherwise I'd start right away). --Pharaoh Hound (talk) 22:52, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, I'm looking forward to what you find.

Rfrisbietalk 23:36, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Would you mind reminding me what the criteria is for the Did You Know section? I bet I can think of a few ... Thanks!

Portal of the month

Hi how are you? I was thinking to update the portal of the month. I noticed that you updated it the last time, so I reckon I should let you know. Cheers -- Imoeng 11:06, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. Is it Octember already?! I can't wait to see what you pick.

Rfrisbietalk 13:18, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

I was thinking... How about using the Wikipedia:Featured content/Portals page to randomly show featured portals at Portal:List? I made a random featured portal test and it seems to work just fine. (In order to see it operate, you need to edit the test page, then "Show preview" to see the changes.) What do you think? Rfrisbietalk 16:18, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

That is a cool idea. However I have tried to refresh the page, edit the page, show preview and other stuff, and the featured portal keeps changing everytime I refresh it. I don't really understand the markup at Featured content/Portal, but I'll figure it out. Oh or maybe its just my browser? Cheers -- Imoeng 19:34, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi, I've updated Wikipedia:Featured content/Portals so all the Wikipedia:Featured portals are randomly displayed there. See the discussion at Portal talk:List#Randomized featured portals here? Rfrisbietalk 19:49, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Adding "Contents" to Main Page

Hi, David. Does anything else need to happen before Wikipedia:Contents can be added to the Main Page? Rfrisbietalk 03:57, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

I wouldn't think so, but I'm reluctant to do this myself. I recently initiated a similar discussion at Talk:Main Page, which resulted a similar consensus among the respondents. After waiting two weeks, I acted on this by removing the article count from the top of the page, and I was promptly accused of unilaterally imposing my will "without notice" and subjected to numerous hurtful remarks (including some of a personal nature). I don't wish to risk re-igniting this controversy, so I'm hoping that another sysop will perform the edit. —David Levy 04:44, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Fair enough. Do you know anyone in particular who frequents the Main Page discussions? It seems like with the high volume there, things can get lost in the clutter. Rfrisbietalk 04:47, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Off the top of my head, you might try asking Brian0918 or Dragons flight. —David Levy 05:24, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. Rfrisbietalk 05:26, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

People keep clicking on the "+" tab at the top of my talk page (the tab between "edit this page" and "history"), which creates a subtopic below my footer. Have you run into this problem? Do you know of a fix? Is there any way to get rid of that tab? After almost every post, I have to move the footer back to the bottom of the page!   The Transhumanist   10:30, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, that's a "design feature" of this type of layout. It happens to me too. I don't know of any way to "fix" it. Rfrisbietalk 12:29, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Or...if you really don't like moving the footer all the time, you can do something like at User talk:MiraLuka. Then, just remove the footer and the "problem" is solved. Rfrisbietalk 13:38, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
A user named Rick Block stopped by and fixed the problem with a CSS trick. You might want to take a look.   The Transhumanist   14:13, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip. Rfrisbietalk 15:34, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Well, I hired a thousand monkeys, and they seem to have stumbled across a way to move the footer code to the top of the page and keep the look I like! Thanks again.

Rfrisbietalk 17:36, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

You know what this means don't you? By containing it all in a template, now it's portable!   The Transhumanist   18:34, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Ah, yessss, I love a parade!

Portal comments

Hello Rfrisbie, I have added some comments on Portal talk:Cats. The similar comments are applicable for the Dogs Portal. I would appericiate your work on both the portals. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 19:04, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! I'll take a look. Rfrisbietalk 20:08, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Of Cats 'n Dogs

Hi Rfrisbie!

The little dog icon atop this page looks quite similar to our dog, whom I believe is probably a Maltese mix.

I am so far behind on my semester papers, I think I'm ahead. I shouldn't be participating in any discussions/forums at all. I am guilty of doing so, but I need to stop.

Can I take a rain check 'til the third week of Dec.?

I apologize!

--Ling.Nut 21:01, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Ling.Nut. Thanks for your reply. I think you're ahead too, keep it up!

Any help whenever you can offer it still will be greatly appreciated. Rfrisbietalk 21:48, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

p.s. The "mutt" in the corner is a "terrier mix." That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Re:Cats and Dogs Portal

Hey there!

I posted my comments/suggestions on Portal talk:Cats and Portal talk:Dogs. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Best of luck with bringing them to FP status. Nishkid64 21:51, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot Nishkid64, I just read them! I'll start chipping away at the suggestions and either make the changes or summarize why I didn't (mainly because of the randomized item display design). Rfrisbietalk 21:55, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Virtual classroom update

I've written a translation of Interiot's "geekspeak" post. It took me hours to figure out what he was talking about. Some pretty cool tricks, now described in easy to follow steps. I've also thrown in some of my own tricks, have updated my notes on the interface I use, and have answered my Esperanza students' questions in the questions and comments section at the bottom of the page. Let me know if the page is helping in any way. Hope to see ya there again soon.  The Transhumanist   00:16, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

This is not a Featured Picture, so I have removed it from Wikipedia:Featured pictures/Animals/Mammals and have deleted the description page. Photos are promoted to featured picture status by community consensus, not just on the whims of one editor. Perhaps you were confused because it's a Featured Picture on Commons? Anyway, if you are interested in having it promoted to Featured Picture status, please nominate it at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 16:56, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Please accept my apologies for my tone. Unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence where people attempt to list their favorite pictures as Featured Pictures. Regards, howcheng {chat} 17:17, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Apology accepted. Perhaps the Commons and and Wikipedia templates can be edited slightly to more clearly identify where the picture is featured. Rfrisbietalk 17:31, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Portal tabs

Hey, well, thought I would try that other tab...the color and flushing/spacing seem to elude me  :) Portal:Military of the United States/Tab 3, Portal:Military of the United States/Tab 3/Header If you could fix and/or show me how, that would be cool.  :) Joe I 11:07, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

You were close. The "current page" is Tab1, except on the right end. I made the colors consistent. Just edit them if you like. Rfrisbietalk 13:03, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh!, that's what you meant by fixin the color. I thought, seeing if I wanted to find other colors.  :) Thnx it looks good. Joe I 16:31, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Cool. Rfrisbietalk 16:33, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Psychology assessment

Thanks for joining in on the assessment of Co-counselling. I had been reluctant to assess articles for a long time, but I figured that it would have to be done eventually. If you have any suggestions on how I could handle things better, I would definitely appreciate the input. By the way, great job on the changes to the Psychology portal! —Cswrye 18:47, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for all of your efforts too. I think you're doing an excellent job on the assessments. I wouldn't sweat the specifics on any article too much, exactly for the situation you just encountered. Just take your best shot and move on. If anyone wants to shoot back, just duck and take it from there. My latest pastime is trying to get some portals up to featured status, e.g., Portal:Cats and Portal:Dogs. Check them out, then follow the links at the tops of their talk pages and weigh in. With a little more sprucing up, Portal:Psychology has a good shot at making featured status too. If you want to get in on that fun, let me know.

Chemistry portal

I'll have a look over it - I haven't gone through it very in-depth, but it looks bloody impressive from where I am right now :) <about psychology portal discussion above> By the way, would you mind taking a look at Portal:Chemistry/Elements/Random? I've used a template that's in my userspace (because I'm not sure if it's in template space already), but I was wondering whether the same effect could be achieved via Random Portal Component. riana_dzasta 15:52, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I was about to throw in the switch function at Portal:Chemistry/Elements/Random, but User:Sceptre beat me to it! >;-o. I threw in the randomization piece from the portal pages just to show how they relate. It looks great. :-) Rfrisbietalk 20:23, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Wow, you guys are good! Much better than the horrible, cluttered code I was using before. I'm about to attempt the random portal components thingamibob. By the way, if we do that, do we need to have an archive? It just seems silly to have a dated archive when you can click a link to shuffle it up. If you know what I mean... riana_dzasta 05:17, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi! The featured portal folks still expect archives and nominations!

You can see how I implemented that at Cats, Dogs, and Psychology. Check out "What links here" for {{Random portal component}} to see other examples. Good luck, and let me know if I can help. Rfrisbietalk 05:24, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I was just about to get back to you about that, because I saw what you did at Psychology. D'oh! I'll do it. *sighs* All the time I wasted dredging up dates and articles from the history... wasted. :P riana_dzasta 05:28, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Well, my "archives" are just my working lists anyway. Everything is on a subpage, and then some control structure picks one. I also got tired of changing the layouts for all the subpages every time someome (me included) came up with another "improvement," so I started using "layout templates," like at Portal:Psychology/Selected article/Layout and Portal:Psychology/Selected article/1..Portal:Psychology/Selected article/20. Enjoy! Rfrisbietalk 05:38, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Thank you! I honestly need to learn this stuff! I'm in the process of creating subpages for selected biographies, then I'll do pictures and featured articles last. riana_dzasta 06:11, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
You're welcome. It looks great! Keep up the good work. Rfrisbietalk 06:14, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Phew! Finished selected biographies (it took so long because I had to write the biographies... featured articles and pictures should be easier). Sorry to be a pain, but can you tell me what the 'seed' function does? What do you need it for? riana_dzasta 08:22, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Wow-ee, looks great! Seeds get things started. In other words, computers are stupid. ;-) In other other words, computer randomizing functions really aren't, they're pseudo-randomizing functions, they just look random – sort of. When two or more uses of the same function are together, they actually repeat the same pattern of results. For the chemistry portal, that means certain combinations of selected articles, pictures, biographies, and elements actually would repeat themselves. The seed value changes where the randomization starts for each section; the result is the combinations keep changing too. Using different prime numbers for each section's seed ensures some common denominator doesn't sneek in there under the radar. All of this is highly critical for attaining wikifeaturesportalstatus — not! ;-) One more thing, if you add a "Show another bla bla bla" purge link and remove the one at the bottom of the page, readers easily can see "new" versions of the portal. :-) Rfrisbietalk 14:57, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Yah, I'm gonna get that done once I get all the other stuff done ;) I still have to confirm with another user (the person usually responsible for updating the featured article) whether it's OK to randomise the FAs, or whether he wants to keep them in chronological order. Consensus, consensus ;) Also (sorry to be a pain, AGAIN!) if you have a minute, can you tell me what I did wrong here? riana_dzasta 15:13, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
The SetPic subpage had some "gunk" at the bottom that was screwing up the selected picture pagename. I removed it. I also noticed you were using the "old" style of randomizing subpage selection (I hadn't gotten around to changing it). I tried putting the randomizer right on the selected picture page and it works just fine. That's really a third way of done it! You can leave it how it is and slightly modify the directions or use the "Random portal component" like on Selected biography. Sorry for throwing in a new curveball. :-) Rfrisbietalk 16:30, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
The more I thing about it, if you want to use {{Random portal component}}, then it would be "simpler" to use the type of subpage layout at pages like Portal:Texas/Selected article. If you like what I just did at Portal:Chemistry/Selected picture, then leave the main page alone and don't use Random portal component. If you use both, then you'll have to update the "max" value in two places – the main page actually will control the portal display, while the subpage just will display an example there. Of course, you always could just delete the display on the subpage if you use the main page method. Rfrisbietalk 16:43, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Or...I tried a new archive layout at Portal:Psychology/Selected article to go along with {{Random portal component}}. Rfrisbietalk 17:29, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh, man, I am way too tired to figure all that out right now ;) I'll give it a shot when I have time, and when I more than half awake. By the way, thanks for all your help and patience! You're a champion :) riana_dzasta 19:18, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for helping me work through a stream of consciousness! :-) For "simplicity," Portal:Psychology has my latest way of doing things. A copy-and-paste approach should work fairly well (if you ignore that layout template thing, at least for now. >;-o) Rfrisbietalk 19:24, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

By the way, if you want me to actually "do" something on the portal, rather than just talk about it, I'm more than willing to help. I just don't want to take the fun away from anyone who's been working on it all along. Rfrisbietalk 04:03, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey, feel free to pitch in :) I'm having loads of fun trying to figure all this stuff out, but I don't mind sharing ;) I'm about the embark on the exhilarating task of getting all our FAs onto subpages. I think the next major thing that needs to be done is to archive all the old news, since the featured portal folks seem to like that, too. I'm sure there's more stuff to be done, but that's the only one I can think of right now. But yeah, if you feel like helping, join in, of course! :) riana_dzasta 09:20, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
FAs done! By the way, I was just asked by someone if it's ok to show/hide navframes on portals, just to cut the space down. AFAIK it's not, but I just thought I'd confirm with you, since you know more about this kind of thing that I do... riana_dzasta 12:32, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Okay, thanks, I'll probably try some things. I tried show/hide on something once and someone else deleted it. I could ask on the featured talk page. Another technique is tabs, like at Portal:Military of the United States. Rotations of selected content could be random, daily, weekly, monthly, etc. That's also something to think about. Rfrisbietalk 12:56, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh my God, you're watching my contributions like a hawk! *vows not to blank pages when Rfrisbie might be online* :p I understand what you're talking about now. By the way, call me Riana, everyone else does (seeing as how it's my name) :) riana_dzasta 17:30, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks so much! :)
You are awesome! Thanks for archiving the news, I was getting around to it but I've been busy studying. And fixing the picture and FA and biography layouts. And removing that ugly frame I put in, thinking it would look good, but completely forgot to remove. And... did I miss anything out? :D Thanks! riana_dzasta 03:07, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I finished reading the Internet, so I had to start over! Thanks for the cookie! Yum, yum... Rfrisbietalk 03:12, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Duly reverted. This is what happens when you're sitting on 1280x768 and oblivious to the rest of the world :) riana_dzasta 15:50, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the brilliant work with the periodic table, Frisbie! I'll implement it as soon as I've got the DYK section done (I'm working on it now). I feel kinda bad that you and Sceptre spent all that time on the switch, though... in the meantime, I've got another question for you. With 'In the news' sections, are we only supposed to give news that can be found on Wikipedia and/or sister projects, or is it OK to provide external links? I'll ask on the project talk page too, but I thought I might get a quicker response from you. Cheers, riana_dzasta 07:03, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Re:Improvements to the Psychology portal

I can't think of anything at present. It appears to meet the criteria, and looks excellent to the casual observer. --Gray Porpoise 18:42, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry if that's unhelpful; beyond Portal:Cetaceans, I haven't had much experience with featured portal candidates. --Gray Porpoise 18:43, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, maybe no news is good news.

Rfrisbietalk 19:58, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Having been tied up with assessments for some time now, I've neglected to thank you both for your excellent work on the dogs portal and for joining the project. You have already proved to be an invaluable addition to the project, and I hope that you feel free to contribute further in any way that you see fit. Regarding the project, we have just started some discussion as to what should be counted as being the articles of the greatest importance to the project, in the hope that this might get the various members to focus at least some of their attention to bringing these articles up to good article status or higher. Any input you might choose to give at Wikipedia:WikiProject Dogs/Top-importance articles would be more than welcome. Thanks again for everything. Badbilltucker 18:30, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Okay, thanks! I'll chime in if I think of something to say.

Portal suggestion

OK, so I probably won't have time to work on this until we can get Portal:Chemistry up to featured, but what do you think of something like this, to work on later? riana_dzasta 04:48, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Interesting! I'll help out when you're ready to get it going. One suggestion would be to broaden the topic a bit. Category:Optics is a notch above Category:Light and a notch below Category:Electromagnetism. You want to make sure you have enough material. Since it's a mess right now, you also could consider rescuing Portal:Electromagnetism and throw your topics into there. Keep me in the loop and I'll be there.

Rfrisbietalk 05:00, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

You're right, I might think about tackling Electromagnetism first. I'm not a huge Physics buff, but it could still be fun. And yes, the problem will be that it will have to overlap with other things a fair bit. OK, I gotta get going now, but there's been a complaint on Portal talk:Chemistry that the colour scheme is, I quote, 'pretty horrible'. Maybe I just don't have the interior decorator's eye ;) riana_dzasta 05:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
You don't have to be an expert on a subject to make a portal, just a good finder of stuff. It's almost impossible to win with everyone on color because it's an emotional/personality thing. The portal mentioned, Physics, isn't exactly the best color role model either, IMHO. I'd just wait for an FP criticism on color before I worried about it too much. If you want to, just keep playing around with more palettes at User:Rfrisbie/Palettes/Portals and User:Rfrisbie/Palettes/Headers. Otherwise, just leave it be for now. Mathematics eductaion

Hi. I notice you added an image of the Mandelbrot set to the Mathematics education article. It's a nice picture, but I don't think it has much connection with the subject of the article. Maybe you can find a more relevant image e.g. a picture of a classroom, or a texbook ? If not, I think we should just remove the picture. Thanks. Gandalf61 12:11, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

So many "something education" articles have a classroom-style image or no image at all. Obviously, I don't have a problem with using a possible image used "in that subject" as well. Frankly, there aren't enough images of this style used in the subject area education articles as it is, IMHO. If you strongly object to what's there, go ahead and move it somewhere further down the article and/or replace it with another topical math image and/or a math ed classroom picture. I've already looked at lots of images, and that was my best shot. :-) Regards, Rfrisbietalk 13:09, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Science portal images

Wow, superb work - sorry I haven't been online earlier. Do you mean more science-y images for the subpages? Shouldn't be too hard, I'll find some stuff for you and put them in, you can tell me if you like 'em or not. riana_dzasta 03:25, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Great! Yes, I mean more science-y images for the subpages. Thanks! Rfrisbietalk 03:28, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm, I added some images for subpage 2, but I couldn't really think of anything very interesting for subpage 1 so I just stuck with Nuvola images. Take a look and let me know what you think. riana_dzasta 04:46, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
I like the images, but I already putzed with them a bit. I put back the portal/project icons and moved the new images to the right. I was trying to "brand" the types of links with wiki-icons. If we can find some other photos/artwork perhaps in the social/applied sciences too (that natural science leaning) to put on the right sides, I'd probably like the wiki-icons back on the left sides. What do you think about something like that? Rfrisbietalk 04:53, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Sounds good! I can't find much in the way of icons, unfortunately. I'll keep looking. riana_dzasta 05:34, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Chemistry would like to see this portal attain featured status. If you have any tips, tricks or suggestions, please feel free to add them here! Thanks, riana_dzasta 05:42, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm... What to say, what to say?...

Okay, then

! Rfrisbietalk 05:53, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm thinking about taking this to featured portal candidates maybe today or tomorrow, do you think that's OK? :) riana_dzasta 05:16, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Sure, I expect it will pass with flying colors!

Rfrisbietalk 13:03, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Once Education and Psychology have been promoted, do you want to have a go at 'putzing' this one? I would love to help out riana_dzasta 10:26, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Sure, just don't make me do the quick step!

Rfrisbietalk 12:54, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Well, wasn't it you who said that you just need to be a good finder of stuff? Not a good dancer... :p That's cool, I'll leave a note over at WikiProject Dance to see if they want to lend a hand. riana_dzasta 12:56, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi Rfrisbie, I'd love to see some work on Portal:Dance! Your changes look great so far, thank you!! I've made a few changes too since I saw your message at WP:Dance. Cheers! --Fang Aili talk 14:25, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Fang Aili. I like what you've done to the place too! As another type of change, we probably can group some of the smaller sections to get rid of a few headers. I've had a little trouble finding good content, but I've set up the selected article, bio and pic so that new items can be added easily. I hope you and other project members can supply the needed expertise in that area.

Rfrisbietalk 14:34, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Oooh, found heaps of piccies around the place, but I'm not sure whether the portal has more of a classical Western focus, so I'm hesitant about putting them onto the portal. Perhaps Erica can clear this up? :) riana_dzasta 15:31, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
My understanding is that it is a general dance portal, not just Western dance. So feel free to include pictures of all kinds of dance! I agree that getting rid of a few headers would be a good idea, but I'm not sure how to do that yet. --Fang Aili talk 15:42, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Excellent. I'll find all the images I found last night again (stupidly forgot to note them down) and I'll add them to the nominations section, you guys can go through and use the ones you like :) riana_dzasta 15:47, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

I agree lots of good pics are around. The hard part for many portals is to find good articles to go with them. (Some portals just do the pics in that section, but I like to link to a related article whenever possible.) I always go for the "world view" on any topic that isn't explicitly limited by the scope of the title – don't want that "systemic bias" thing creeping up. ;-) As far as grouping goes, Portal:Education shows a relatively simple example, while Portal:Mathematics shows a fancier example. It sort of depends on the complexity of the topic how far we want to go. Of course we always can go in stages, first do a simple consolidation to organize things, then go fo a fancier layout if we want to spruce things up even more. Rfrisbietalk 15:58, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

That's true, so I'm trying to find pictures with articles (I'll have that in by tomorrow, I should really get into bed). I quite like the grouping over at Education, maybe that might be appropriate (for now, at least)? Thanks guys, I'm off for tonight, don't do too much without me ;) riana_dzasta 16:06, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
You always say something like that just before you run off and do something constructive, like sleeping!!!

Rfrisbietalk 16:16, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I won't be able to maintain very well. I'm trying to finish my last two years of high school and prepare for college before March. Tough. I'll help out if I ever go on vacation though. P.S., I created a long list of science pictures here:Portal_talk:Science/Featured_picture. You can use a macro or pick some yourself to "nominate." Good luck, and thank you X [Mac Davis] (DESK|How's my driving?) 02:46, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Cool, thanks for the link and good luck with school!

You deserve this...

Tip of the Day Barnstar
To Rfrisbie for the bright idea of the yearless year, and for going above and beyond the call of duty by designing, testing, and converting a whole year's worth of tips to the yearless year, which makes the whole tip of the day project much easier to maintain, here is bright and shiny (tip of the day) lightbulb!  The Transhumanist   14:32, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! Rfrisbietalk 14:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey there fellow portal-maker! Could you help me move the photo portal over to the random set design instead of its current weekly rotation? Thanks in advance, --Gphototalk 04:01, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Sure, I'll start on it some time tomorrow, or by the weekend at the latest. Thanks for asking!

Rfrisbietalk 04:35, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks very much! --Gphototalk 14:20, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Re: the featured star problems (I don't know but..), this (Wikipedia:Catalogue of CSS classes#IE fixes) is why people hate IE. Unless you're stuck in IE (because at work, or whatnot), I strongly recommend using Firefox instead, for many many reasons :) --Quiddity 21:32, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes, yes, I know, "IE is evil. Uncle Bill is evil, except for all that money he gives away stuff..." However, I have no choice at work so I just keep it at home too. Anyway, it's always fun to try to trick the dark side into behaving against its will.

Thanks for the tip anyway. Rfrisbietalk 22:56, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Aas it turns out, when I fixed a syntax error in a box, the star magically appeared. Rfrisbietalk 05:56, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

SmileyAward

You seem to be the person to ask about userbox markup : ) - How do they look, and did I miss anything? - jc37 06:44, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Also please check out the syntax of: User:Jc37/Userboxes/Barnstar. Sometime in the future, I think I'd like to add it to Wikipedia:Award templates : ) - jc37 11:33, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi, they look fine to me as userboxes. If you want them to be "official" awards, you might have to go through the Wikipedia:Barnstar and award proposals process. In that case, you also might want to make it easier to modify the userboxes by adding some sort of parameter templates. You could use {{userbox}} or add the details at your boxes. I have an example at {{User:UBX/Boilerplate}}. Good luck.

Portals

Sorry I haven't been able to give any feedback on your portals, been busy. But, I see you're doin just fine :) I did look at em, tho, and most everything looked in place, so... anyways...  :) Joe I 23:56, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me!

Photo Portal

Thank you SO much! This is great! --Gphototalk 03:53, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

You're welcome. I just noticed the the categories box is a bit wide. Do you want to work on that? Rfrisbietalk 03:56, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Sciencea again...

Please look at Portal_talk:Science/Featured_picture to make sure you haven't already put up a featured picture that was recently featured. You've selected good pictures, and I guess we agree on good looking ones, since I've already featured some. X [Mac Davis] (DESK|How's my driving?) 05:27, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

The pictures, articles and biographies are on a randomized rotation now. You're going to see ones that were up before. That's getting to be a pretty common feature of portals these days.
