Unverified images

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following image:

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, {{PD-self}} if you wish to release your own work to the public domain, {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know at my talk page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. Peter O. (Talk, automation script) 05:07, Dec 25, 2004 (UTC)

P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.

  • Hi there. I came upon another of your old uploads while sorting through some images tagged as unverified since February 2004: Image:Tripod 650x975.jpg. Info appreciated. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 15:50, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Movie reviews

[edit]

What does "Capsule review of the movie by William Robinson:" mean, and why are you putting it on several different articles? Are these your reviews, or are you copying them from someplace else? RickK 06:25, Jan 24, 2005 (UTC)

William Robinson is my brother, I'm thinking of creating a separate username for him.

1-We don't sign our edits.

That's your decision. This is why some people mistrust Wikipedia because of the lack of provence as to who is responsible for an article. Are you ashamed to admit who wrote something? Many people who see the programs I have written are surprised to find I sign my code. I'm proud of what I do. So is my brother.
Further, at the bottom of the editing page one of the instructions says 'cite your sources.' So now you are saying I should not do what the very editing instructions say is critically important? O:)
Beyond this, it allows me to 'frame' a short review separate from the main text of a larger overview of a film so someone can get an idea of the film or understand it better. Consider the three versions release of a paper encyclopedia (who's name escapes me) that was released a few decades ago; a full-blown comprehensive multi-volume set, a shorter abridged set, and a one-volume very short overview of everything. This may be a start in going toward that direction. It is the sort of thing that might make Wikipedia more useful.

2-Has your brother released this info to GFDL? RickK 20:37, Jan 25, 2005 (UTC)

I said I was going to put his reviews up on the Internet. He said that was ok.

And also, how about Image:Grapefruit 700x490.jpg? – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 22:41, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)

These images were both taken by me. I'm releasing them into the public domain.

Arlington article

[edit]

I have edited the Arlington County, Virginia article because I felt your recent addition about Fairfax County and Fairfax City was factually wrong and (unintentionally I am sure) would be misleading. I have explained on the Talk page for the article. No offense intended, and I would be glad to discuss it if you feel my point is wrong. Thanks. Vaoverland 11:55, Feb 27, 2005 (UTC)

Crypto WikiProject monthly summary

Quick note to let you know that some of your editing last month was mentioned in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Cryptography/March_2005. Thanks! — Matt Crypto 16:50, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

Is there a reason you've been adding Google Maps links to articles for locations? {{coor d}} exists to give a link to not just a map site that won't work in all browsers but also others. To find lat/long, use TerraServer-USA and copy it from the left side. --SPUI (talk) 19:59, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am, however, not sure what you mean by "won't work in all browsers" as it works in both Netscape 7.2 and IE. I will include dual references, I think so if it doesn't work using Google maps they can try another one. Paul Robinson 16:43, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Google Maps doesn't work in K-Meleon, a modern browser. I'm not sure what you mean about {{coor d}} being ugly - see Lehigh and New England Railroad#Lehigh and New England Railroad: 1895-1961 for an example of its use. --SPUI (talk) 17:54, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's ugly; it shows the latitude and longitude coordinates and that's not what I want to show.

Paul Robinson 17:59, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ah - you want it just as an external link? --SPUI (talk) 18:06, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, didn't realize it was possible to do it without the lat/long. See Interstate 4 - I used {{coor}}. --SPUI (talk) 18:28, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You see those numbers in the URL, like in http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Philadelphia,+Pennsylvania&ll=39.889719,-75.159531&spn=0.118620,0.180038&hl=en ? Those are the latitude and longitude. So instead of adding the Google Maps links, please use {{Coor|39.889719_N_75.159531_W|map}}, which produces {{Coor|39.889719_N_75.159531_W|map}}. This looks the same but allows for more freedom on the part of the user in choosing maps. --SPUI (talk) 05:33, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

chemistry category

[edit]

Hi, I notice that you are moving a lot of articles into the chemistry category. Just to let you know: a lot of people busy themselves recategorizing articles to more specific categories and out of general categories such as chemistry. V8rik 22:34, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your response on V8rik's page- I can accept your point about classifying things in several ways. However we cannot have every chemistry-related article categorised under "chemistry"- this would run to several thousand articles. This is like listing every historical figure as "category history", it is just way too broad. However if you do find any stray new chemistry articles that are completely uncategorised, I agree it is helpful just to stick it under chemistry so we are aware of it, the chemists will classify it properly later. Thanks, Walkerma 03:43, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

USB picture

Hello, and thanks for your new picture in Universal Serial Bus. It shows the scale pretty well. However, it seems to me that they are a little blurry. Maybe you could get better results by using any of the following: (1) a tripod (2) more light (3) the "flower" mode? --Homer Jay 00:00, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

Jumping the gun

[edit]

Please refrain from listing the Supreme Court composition tables to have the most recent composition list be dated ending in 2005. We do not actually know that the Supreme Court composition will change in 2005. Roberts could be successfully borked. He could die in a car accident and have his successor borked. Until the confirmation actually occurs and O'Connor actually leaves the court, please refrain from making the change prematurely.

Thank you.

DLJessup 13:53, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, since Renquist died, it looks like in the end I was right to have the most recent list start with 2005, doesn't it? :) Paul Robinson 00:34, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Uh...67.62.121.98 is also you?

[edit]

I reverted what looked like vandalism of your userpage by that IP address, but it seems that it was you vandalising uh, yourself? Sorry if I got it wrong :)--inks 00:30, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it was me vandalizing my own pages; I thought it would be funnier that way. But I was really touched by the thought that people are watching out for vandalism even on people's user pages; that is quite touching. Paul Robinson 00:32, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you sure fooled me, Paul, 'cuz I applied a second revert on that so-called "vandalism."  Denelson83  04:11, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just stumbled by your user page and thought I'd mentioned that it's no longer you at sepia tone, but Lenna. Though for just a second, I wondered if Lenna really had written an RFC. :) --Saforrest 05:30, September 6, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you. I have reverted the photo usage back because the last thing we need is to use a photo from playboy and get sued over it! Paul Robinson 15:05, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

clearing next to an image

[edit]

G'day Paul,

I've replaced your <P> on the BJAODN page. To push something below an image, use <br clear="both" /> — that gives you a new line below anything, even floated elements like most images in Wikipedia. Hope, this helps --fuddlemark (talk) 04:36, 7 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

hoax book illustraton

[edit]

IMHO, the joking "grassy knoll" book picture you added to list of hoaxes isn't quite appropriate - it's not about a hoax, it's about a conspiracy theory. A picture of the Cardiff Giant or something like that is what's really needed. - DavidWBrooks 16:22, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How about if we edit the caption so that it's more explanatory? - DavidWBrooks 18:01, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The Cardiff Giant was one of the best-known American hoaxes in the 19th century.

Hi, sorry, my previous comment (now removed) wasn't particularly polite. I've reverted your additions because the "red book" picture isn't an appropriate image to put on these articles; in most cases it's off-topic and confusing, and isn't particularly illustrative. — Matt Crypto 00:33, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The above poster removed your illustration, not at my urging ... you and I were having a pleasant, civilized discussion, which is what wikipedia is all about. Anyway, continuing the discussion about the hoax illustration - I see what you're trying to do, but I don't think it belongs in wikipedia. That's more of a magazine-type illustration, not illustrative as (IMHO) encyclopedia art/photos should be. - DavidWBrooks 00:26, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Request for edit summary

[edit]

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 19% for major edits and 9% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 150 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 21:30, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disambig for Area code 212

[edit]

Obviously the page only has only one possible disambiguation. Nonetheless, it seems to me to be a fundamental error that an area code for Manhattan should be the treated as if it were the same thing as one in Istanbul, as they are simply not the same area code and should be discussed as separate entities, and it feels wrong to do that on one article. Btw, I'm glad my enormous swarm of useless userboxes inspired you ;). Niffweed17, Destroyer of Chickens 23:32, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Flashlight_450x190.JPG. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

Just as an FYI, the biggest gains (losses?) in file size were handled by a) removing the JPEG artifacting (even today I have flashbacks of undulating fields of green), and b) switching to four (as I recall) colors. — Xoder| 04:55, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Georgia Ave map

[edit]

Thanks for your image of GA Ave. It's very useful but it appears that your map shows the street going south all the way to Constitution Ave, or at least through downtown. It actually goes no further south than Florida Ave. (On your map, that would be near the top of the "W" in "Washington".) Is it possible for you to recreate the map and upload a new version? --dm (talk) 01:34, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Could you weigh in at the bottom of the Talk Page for Katelyn Faber regarding the inclusion of an image of her? Deleting your own work

Hi, thanks for marking Image:Area code 430.PNG for deletion. It is now gone. FIPS Place Code articles

[edit]

Anything over about 32kb is inadvisable for Wikipedia articles because not everyone has ADSL to access the Internet and lower bandwidths will struggle with large pages. I have seen you uploading articles today of over 500kb. See Wikipedia:How to use tables to find out how to convert those html tables into wiki-tables, and I would advise breaking the pages down into smaller sections if after conversion they are still too large. -- Francs2000 12:42, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Would you at least consider converting the formatting into wiki code? That will save a lot of space: HTML is very space expensive, which is why wiki table formatting was invented. -- Francs2000 00:38, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is your last warning for editing FIPS place code/Vermont. The next time you vandalize a page, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. // Tawkerbot2 23:00, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Look, I'm not really what's going on here. I briefly blocked you, but that was kind of a hasty action and I apologize. Can you please explain what's going on? --Cyde Weys 23:28, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I also blocked you, about two minutes after Cyde blocked, at the same time he unblocked you. So you've been unblocked again . . . but an explanation would be nice. --He:ah? 23:33, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently my posting of the FIPS codes for various communities of the United States was considered to be (1) Not valid for an encyclopedia; (2) excessively long; (3) original material, none of which I agree with. Following the comments I decided to mark the damn pages for deletion since if people don't want my content then fine, I'll pull the damn stuff, I don't have the time or the energy to fight over it. So marking the pages for deletion, based on the statements that were made, caused my account to be blocked for vandalism! I can't win. I put pages in, they're considered "not appropriate", so rather than fight over what I think is unfair and wrong, I remove the unwanted pages, I get blocked for vandalism! Paul Robinson 01:37, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is not the posting of the codes that warranted the block, it is the deleted text that I won't repeat here that did. Unblock denied -- Tawker 01:41, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You can't just blank articles here. There is process in place because once you submit anything to Wikipedia it is the property of the project and community. The community doesn't like material being deleted without getting to review it first, so any attempt to get around the Article for Deletion process is considered vandalism. — Saxifrage 01:48, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:CA Inyo-Mariposa counties 300.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:CA Inyo-Mariposa counties 300.png. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 21:04, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm a bit puzzled what's going on with this template, and the two articles that include it. This should really just be one merged article, with redirects as appropriate, no? Alai 02:30, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • There's one of these templates per overlay? I see what you mean about the listing, but given they're also listed on that basis at List of North American area codes, an actual category of distinct articles seems to me preferable. Even if the separate category listings are key, use of the template space to hold a whole article (albeit a small one) seems to me odd and unnecessary. Alai 18:37, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • No articles should be in Template space. Note that it is easy to use an article as a "template" by simply putting the article name in the same kind of brackets, but with an added colon on the front of the article's name. So I would suggest that Template:Area codes 215 & 267 should be moved to Area codes 215 & 267, and then it can be transcluded as if it were a template with {{:Area codes 215 & 267}}. — Saxifrage 20:05, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • This is a great solution. I will use it, then after I have converted all the improper templates to user space, I'll include {{db-author}} to mark them for deletion. Paul Robinson 21:34, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • (Article space, that is.) That seems fine now, great. I noticed this in the first place as due to it showing up as a false-positive stub template on WP:WSS/T, which indeed looked very odd... Alai 23:38, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed, by much the same route, we also have {{Area codes 484, 610 & 835}}, {{Area codes 484. 610 and 835}} and {{Area codes 240 & 301}}. I've likewise moved these to the article space: if you've no objections, I'll delete the inter-namespace redirects, which are now unused. Alai 20:07, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm writing to ask you if you know why your user name is mentioned in the copyright license of this photo? Thuresson 20:49, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image categorization

[edit]

Hi, please do not add categories to images. On Wikipedia images shouldn't be in the same category as articles. Cheers, —Ruud 23:26, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I respectfully disagree. Putting images into categories can be useful for finding images which may be appropriate for some topics.
You might be interested in Wikicommons in that case, one of Wikipedia's sister projects. On Wikipedia you should be able to find the images by looking up the respective article. As Wikipedia is in not an image gallery (Wikicommons is) there should be no useful images which cannot be found this way. Images which are not used and have a free licnese should probably be moved to Wikicommons, unused images which are "fair use" should generally be deleted. —Ruud 22:13, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Rfc, I wanted to let you know that I have nominated Arlington County, Virginia as a candidate for US Collaboration of the Week. Blue template

[edit]

I see you created a Shades of blue template. For many of the color articles, I think it's a good thing. For the Blue article itself, however, it made the article 32KB, meaning that it's about time now to think of any section to put into its own article. Georgia guy 15:15, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The New Jersey area codes are incorrectly labeled--201/551 is Northeastern N.J. (roughly Bergen County, top right of the state), whereas 973/its overlay are to the left of this area. Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Wyoming License Plate.PNG. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 16:23, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that right now there is an article for Area codes 281, 713 & 832 as well as Area code 832, Area code 713, and Area code 281. It seems to me that the area codes that cover the same area should be kept combined in one article and the others should be changed to redirects. What do you think? -SCEhardT 14:24, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Each one of the articles, 832, 713 and 281 are simply one-line transclusion macros for the article containing all three. The reason for this is so that the article for 832 can have a link [[Category:Area codes in the United States|832]] and 281 can have the same link for 281. This can't be done with a redirect page (or at least, I don't think so). Otherwise, what happens is in the "Area codes in the United States" category, you'd get a link for 281, 713 and 832 instead of one link for each area code. This is why it is done this way, or at least, why I did it this way. Paul Robinson (Rfc1394) 22:59, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops - didn't notice that the pages are transcluded... Seems to be the best way of doing it for now! -SCEhardT 13:09, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Metro

[edit]

I removed the cats because they are redundant; Orange Line is in the "Orange Line (Washington Metro)" category, which is already in the Washington Metro category. --Golbez 03:12, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally, we're discussing your recent addition of the templates to the station article pages. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Washington Metro to join in. SchuminWeb (Talk) 02:04, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thenk you for pointing that out. That is a really useful tool. Thanks! --GeorgeMoney (talk) (Help Me Improve!) 19:24, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When good tables go bad...

[edit]

I came across this http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_counties_in_Connecticut&diff=48963702&oldid=45243451 while clicking on Random article. It's really really ugly. If it's going to be in a table (questionable per Wp:lists#Tables). Could you tidy it up (since I guess you applied the same table in other articles...) - I would suggest breaking the table into columns i.e. Name, FIPS code, Formed, Historic county seat, and merging the two tables together - and leaving out the state FIPS code entirely. Anyway - just some feedback. Megapixie 14:39, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Popups

[edit]

Thanks, but I already have popups included in Voice of All's script, and alot of other useful JS. GeorgeMoney (talk) 13:38, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New York State area codes

[edit]

It seems that the set of images you have created for New York State area code coverages, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Area_code_347.png et al), incorrectly include Westchester and Nassau counties in the same region as the 4 outer boroughs of New York City. I am pretty sure those should be included in 914 and 516, respectively. Are the source images in such a format that you can easily change this? Or, is there something I'm missing? --Ec- 15:49, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
