db-club and thanks
Thanks for the db-club on the Polish article. And nice to see someone from UIUC around :D -Yupik (talk) 08:51, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- Jeez... another linguist from UIUC? Nice to see there's a presence on WP! —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 09:41, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, but I graduated years ago. Has the department gotten any bigger? When I graduated, there were only four of us graduating that year :D -Yupik (talk) 11:22, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- And congrats btw on graduating! :) -Yupik (talk) 11:25, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- As I recall, during the graduation ceremony, there were something like 4-6 PhD students, and maybe 12 undergrads. I believe there's only one undergrad advisor; last I heard it was Peter Lasersohn, though just two years prior it had been Hans Henrich Hock as long as anybody I knew could remember. Thanks for the congrats. :-D —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 18:23, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- Whoo, more undergrads graduating :D I did my Senior's Thesis with Hock and Gerald M. Browne (who has unfortunately passed on). And hmmh, that was already 14 years ago, so Hock's been doing them forever :D -Yupik (talk) 21:57, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well it's always nice to meet a fellow linguist. I really should go back for my PhD, though I have no idea where I'd do my coursework. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 23:38, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your cooperation. As you know, my primary concern has been how best to protect this article from the IP user’s irresponsible edits by misusing citations causing the mass blanking of the page by an administrator. Sure, your in-depth understanding of linguistics would provide a great help in solving this ongoing matter. Thank you again!

Three Revert Rule
Caution: I believe your multiple reverts to the List of Nobel Laureates by country article may be exceeding the guidelines of the Three Revert Rule. I believe the other user's edits are not vandalism but a disagreement. I've suggested that the other user take the subject to the talk page. Thank you, -- Tcncv (talk) 17:03, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Threshold
Mendaliv,
I got your email about Threshold. I have to tell you that I have a COI with Threshold myself.
(and of course, with Michael ("Aristotle", "Alexander", "Bilax"...etc...) Hartman himself)
as I was kicked out of that game. I'd be the wrong person to assist here.
You may want to open up an RFC on this.
Thanks!

Biography page
Mendaliv--
New user, quick question.
Found on Wikipedia a biography webpage that seems to be not merely biased but violating Wikipedia guidelines. That is, it seems to address personal issues not relevant to the reason why the subject is being profiled.
Can't be fixed by minor editors. How do I go about arguing this case and suggesting an alternative biography. The author of the page cited is anonymous, the IP one of a general university computer so can't really discuss it with him or her.
Help, pls. Reply here or at my page. I'll try to figure out how to get there. Thanks.

- Replied at IP's talk; what's the page? —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 19:12, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Mendaliv__
Thanks for the help. As you suggested, I have put up a page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Tomkoch/Denis_Wood) where an alternate bio' can be see. I would invite the author of the current page to look, too. This is far more complete, and fairer. Let me know what you think. Thanks. --Tomkoch (talk) 19:04, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- I've looked over User:Tomkoch/Denis Wood a bit and made some minor fixes, such as the referencing system. I've also put some points on discussion page, at User talk:Tomkoch/Denis Wood. To summarize, at this point it's not really appropriate for a direct substitution, but it's not far off. I'll be glad to work with you to bring it to our typical standards for biography pages. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 20:14, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Dear Mendaliv:
Thanks so much for your help. And, with your guidance, I'd be delighted to help develop it as a feature page, or whatever.
I have added some references, or tried to, using the mark-up language at which I am not expert. I apologize. Wood's history is described in his book, Home Rules (I added a cite) and interviews like the one with This American Life's I. Glass (I added a cite).
Where it up to me I would not include anything about his prison experience. Same sex relations do not seem relevant to me in this biography of a person very notable in his field but not a general public figure. I would take most of that out but left parts in because it is in the origional Wiki. Your call if it should stay in.
What more is needed? My suspicion is once this focuses on Wood's work others will build and add to that area of its discussion. While it's not the typical WIKI bio' its focus is on the work, and then the man. And that, I think, is where it should be.
What do I do now?--Tomkoch (talk) 23:43, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
Biography update 22 dec.
Dear Mendaliv:
On User:Tomkoch/Denis Wood]...Added references but get an error message "missing tag" that I can't find. Will add a few more references as I dig them up. Decided to leave prison exp' in. Someone else will if I don't. I can get a good photo' of Wood--several have been published--for this page if it becomes a feature. How do I upload?
finally ... should I erase some of the materials below as old or leave it for archiving?
Tom Koch 22 Dec. 2008 --Tomkoch (talk) 19:01, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hey again. I'll try to drop in soonish and help out with some of those issues- I'm a bit strapped for time lately because of the holidays, but I'll still be around to help.
- Yeah, I was going to say basically that- if we were to avoid covering Wood outside of his professional background, someone would just add it down the line. Now's the chance to cover it in a manner that keeps with WP:BLP.
- As to photos, you need to make sure you either hold the copyright of the photo or get permission from the copyright holder to publish it on Wikipedia (which requires it thus be licensed via one of a few ways). "Non-free" licensed images however generally aren't acceptable when they're of living people. Wikipedia:Image use policy may provide some more insight into what's acceptable; I can help out more with this as things start rolling.
- As to the messages, might as well leave them for archiving in case I need to refer to them later on. I'll try to take a look at things later today. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 19:38, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
Arch Coal logo
Hi Mendaliv,
I noticed that you replaced File:Arch Coal logo.png with File:Arch Coal Inc. logo.svg. Could you explain your reasoning? My intuition is that the old one would be preferable, since it seems to be used more widely by the company (on their website, at least). — xDanielx T/C\R 04:21, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- Going from Template:Infobox Company#Description of fields, it's suggested that a gray-scale image is preferred. The version seen at File:Arch Coal Inc. logo.svg appears to be the company's letterhead variant of the logo- used for things that need to be printed in black & white. The version at File:Arch Coal logo.png is used exclusively by their website and on automatically-generated PDFs of news stories.
- It strikes me that their logo is really more or less just the "arch" symbol (judging from the slides shown here), and what we've got are the web and letterhead variants thereof. While neither is necessarily correct, I lean towards SVGs mostly because they're more technically descriptive of the logo than a raster image. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 19:23, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Your comment will be appreciated
I saw that you have visited and edited List_of_Nobel_Laureates_by_country. Unfortunately, I am the only user who seems to be actively taking care of this article. I recently proposed a guideline on the corresponding talk page by which I try to solve the issue on how to correctly mention the birth place of a laureate. I did not get any reaction. As I said, I think noone else has it on watch. For maintaining the article it would be helpful to have consensus on the rules that underly the composition of the list. Unfortunately, I cannot build consensus alone. Also I want to avoid ownership accusations in the future. Therefore, your critical opinion to the topic would be very much appreciated, if you have the time and interest to sort this thing out. Thanks. Tomeasy T C 20:04, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Advertising?
Hi, I recently added a link in the Orbiter (simulator) wiki article. I received a message saying that the link I put on the page is considered advertising. I consider this a little insulting as the link provided is for an Orbiter italian community. I have seen that other communities of other languages are linked in the wikipedia article and have not been removed. Please reconsider your decision as I see no reason why my link should have been removed. Thanks for your time.
Bambino45 (talk) 01:27, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- Not advertising, but for promotional purposes- i.e., to promote the use of the web forum. Please see WP:ELNO, specifically #10, for why the forum link you added isn't appropriate. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 01:28, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Heh, sorry about that - Christmas is a horrid time for such things :) I spoke to Cary (who works at the Office), and he said it'd be fine to include an email address to info-en@wikimedia.org as well as a phone number, but he also noted that cos the office is only open 30-odd-% of the day and often law enforcement requests come from all time zones and therefore at all hours, there may not be anyone there. Image copyright problem with File:1totoro.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:1totoro.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Laughed my balls off
I checked out a source that was added this morning to the Threshold, it was written 20 minutes ago, check it out http://www.youhaventlived.com/qblog/2009/QBlog050109A.html. You've got to give them credit for how far they want to take this - are we going to see a flurry of "reviews" today? --Cameron Scott (talk) 08:55, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- I expect this blog post is going to (temporarily) become someone's argument for keeping. Of course, the post itself makes at least one mistake in its interpretation of how deletion works. This is gonna be fun. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 08:59, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- Furthermore, I'm absolutely unsurprised at the request for a moratorium that occurred early on into the discussion. I'm reasonably certain this was a move by the insiders at Threshold to get more time to "rally the troops". Judging from this, that rallying has most certainly occurred. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 09:05, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- I guess the discussion went like this "please write..." I actually find it quite funny (in a sad sort of way). --Cameron Scott (talk) 09:31, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not surprised it happened. Hartman and Bartle both wrote for the same eZine before. At best this could be considered an op-ed piece. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 09:34, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Disruptive editors
Hi there MENDALIV, VASCO here,
Since last time you replied to me (please see your talkpage archive #4, points 17-19 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Mendaliv/Archive_4), i'll ask your views on this subject:
Last time i reported a disruptive "editor", and received, other than your kind opinion, at least you did try to help me, telling me to try and elaborate on my reports, nothing more than irony and silence.
Now, i reported the same user last week, who now operated anonymously (the MODUS OPERANDI was the same though) (gist seen here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/IncidentArchive504#PEP10_aka_PARARUBBAS_.28anonymous_disruptive_editing.29) and nothing in 7 days, quite strange.
Now, the same person has registered, continuing with the same pattern of "contributions", and i also reported it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#Likely_sock_of_indef_blocked_user). In both my last reports, i followed your advice and provided many DIFFS and "copies" of talkpage warnings issued by users/admins to stop doing their "stuff", still getting no response.
I would very much to get your views on this? Why the silence when i am only trying to help? Of course i am "after them", i want to see this kind of people blocked and/or banned, do you think the lack of feedback it's maybe because i am anonymous? If so, it's unfair.
Regards from Portugal, sorry 4 any incovenience,
VASCO AMARAL - --217.129.67.28 (talk) 00:02, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Vasco. Sorry, but I'm going on a wikibreak for a short while to unwind. Regarding your issue, the last time I looked at it, I couldn't easily make out what the problem was. If it's about introducing factual errors... those sorts of disputes are kind of difficult to settle. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 07:30, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
I know you are on wikibreak, but...
Can you disengage from User:Cambios for a while? I don't want to say XYZ is your fault or ABC is his fault but I think both of you would be happier if you tried to avoid the other for a bit. You did the right thing in asking that he refactor that comment but I think the general impression (that he's being watched, etc.) is not helpful. I think there are enough eyes on this issue that if he really steps out of line someone will say something and/or block him. Have fun on your break. Protonk (talk) 07:51, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Protonk. I'm briefly back to comment on the DRV, but I'll also take the time to respond to this. I'll endeavor to abide by your advice here; it seems clear that the community's tolerance of Cambios' behavior cannot last much longer and there's no point in frustrating myself further. Thanks again for your message! —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 16:12, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
That sounds like a threat to me. I request that you redact it. I consider it a threat considering how many times you've already gotten me banned (always reversed by a more objective admin) or tried to get me banned. You do not speak for the community, as much as I know you wish you did. You aren't an admin yet, Mendaliv.Cambios (talk) 16:45, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- In the interests of mending fences, I have struck this comment. Cambios (talk) 05:57, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
- I don't see any threats, I believe you are mistaken. I respectfully refuse to respond to the rest of your statement. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 17:48, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- Cambios...you are making it very hard for me to act as your advocate here. If I ask Mendaliv to back away from the dispute I expect that you wouldn't drop by his talk page to inflame the issue. Protonk (talk) 20:02, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Phone number removal
Above and beyond the question of the need to remove phone numbers from templates, why bother doing this by hand? Now that the parameter has been removed from the template the number will not display even if it is included. Why not wait for a bot to take care of removing defunct parameters? Alansohn (talk) 19:44, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
- It didn't seem like a particularly large number of removals to do using AWB. Furthermore, if a new user were to come across the article and attempt to fill in the contact number field, or update it, they would be confused and have no idea why it wasn't working. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 19:47, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
