There's a guitar arrangement on it which is extremely difficult technically! Started Me, Gangster, amazingly there seems to still be some missing films for Walsh who directed some masterpieces. Dearie (1927)

Wow!, Congrats on that poster 'templated' if that's a proper word. I first saw that poster in a film book on silent and sound leading men over two decades ago. This was way before the internet but I remembered the poster and it sort of got me interested in lobby posters of the silent years. They are the best in style in my opinion. We hope, just to let you know I found the title of that book that I first saw the lobby poster to Dearie(1927). It's GREAT LOVERS OF THE MOVIES by Jane Mercer c.1975. I did a research of my library system and their copies are 'long gone' as I had expected. This is the book cover:

Hitchcock copyright status

Hi. Hope you're well. I wonder if you can help me out. I'm unsure of the copyright status of films by Hitchcock and I want to use some images from them in a future article. On wikipedia they seem to all be "under public domain" as I see on the Alfred Hitchcock article but am not sure that's quite accurate. [[1]] This site (a wiki) seems to cover the relevant laws and seems to imply that all his films under copyright based on the 70 year after death rule for the UK. Could you clarify this for me? Thanks, too, for the information about the newsletter. That sounds like a good resource. Newspapers and magazines sound interesting, so I'll see what I can find out about those. Do you know whether any subscriptions to databases of newspaper and/or magazine archives are available? I use Google's newspaper search function, and I recently found that the Chicago Tribune has a free search tool. We have the plan of the 1897 Astoria but not the 1893 Waldorf. Also any photos of dignitaries and old balls etc and business/royalty associates would be good! It would be good to glean some info from newspapers from certain years in its history from newspapers.com and construct a more comprehensive history. Bramshill House

Hullo. can you check the interior images for the house, I'm pretty sure they're not really PD based on the life of the photographer and should probably be deleted. Some replacements if possible would be great but probably not possible. Jo Stafford Show on radio

Are you familiar with the Jo Stafford Show on ABC radio? I came across it in an article in Broadcasting ("ABC Is Replacing Eight Sustainers, page 74.). Apparently it was to begin Nov. 11, 1948, and be sponsored by Revere Camera Co. I couldn't find any episodes in either the Internet Archive or Old Time Radio Researchers Library. Thanks for the follow-up on Jo Stafford's program. I wasn't aware of that. It would be nice if more recordings of old radio shows had survived, but I'm glad that we have those that are available. I suppose people back then didn't realize that future generations would be interested in hearing old programs. One article I read when I was working on my article on electrical transcriptions pointed out how surviving transcriptions helped to preserve OTR. It noted that when magnetic tape began to replace ETs, the tapes were usually erased and re-used, forever destroying the programs that they had held. Eddie Blick (talk) 15:02, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

New source for back issues of Billboard

I don't know whether you use Billboard's back issues much in your research, but I thought I would pass this along. American Radio History's website has added back issues of Billboard for most years from 1942 through 1958, with more to come. I have been using Google Books for Billboard's back issues, but having to work with the GB window inside the browser is a bit awkward. These files are PDFs, which I think will be easier to use than GB's. The project is ongoing, with this note on the page:

When finished, this page will have essentially all issues of Billboard from the late 40s to 2010. These are the issues the magazine has released into the public domain including Google Books

We are adding a few unique features. 1. Search by year and decade 2. Chart collections for each year.

3. Easy readability via PDF technology and scans with greater quality than Google

I noticed that the ones at American Radio History begin with Volume 54, as do those at Google Books. I wonder why the company would not make earlier issues available as public domain, too. Back to Billboard on ARH ... I have found that I can highlight text on a page, then copy and paste it into Wikipedia (or elsewhere, of course). HI, I was wondering if you could crop File:Laurence Olivier Joan Fontaine Rebecca.JPG and shading out Joan in the same grey background as the rest. I was wondering how it might look as a portrait by itself. It's difficult because of the hand and her ear/face but I think it is possible to crop out the upper profile due to the size of the image and to shade her out of it. "Archived from the original"

Have any of your citations been changed to "Archived from the original ..."? A few minutes ago I noticed that several citations (such as numbers 80-85) that I had entered on 1948 in radio now have "Archived from the original" with the date the archiving occurred. Have you ever considered using Template:Sfn? I find it easier, and then you can also use Template:Efn for notes instead of the hash thingy. All the books need to go in the bibliography rather than citation notes.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:10, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

It's cleaner I think as it not only saves add tags to refs to multiply, it does it automatically, but it also connects straight to the book when clicked, useful for articles with big bibliographies in finding them. I think the content is fine for GA now but in places the prose needs some work as it reads a bit too much like a narrative in parts. You mean citing the same book page more than once in different places? Just the same sfn|author|year|page and it'll automatically recognize that it's the same page and will bunch them for you without worrying about ref tags. It's clever like that :-). For notes you can use Template:Efn which will work if there is a given note list in the notes I think. See the Althorp article for instance. Most of the Stork article is very good, but there are some spots like the Goodman Ace one where it reads a little like a story and not always easy to follow. Doesn't need much work now. The problem is that there'll be some mention of the club in masses of books but finding them in the google book search more difficult. I had to find the bit about Bogart for instance by a special word search!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:40, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Free images of celebs at the club would be good! - perhaps we could do a four image thing like in the Waldorf 1893 article. The part I most misunderstood was "Their message about the club's wonderful air conditioning brought a response from Ace that after having received an icy reception there, he was well aware of the climate", no idea what you mean here, I was puzzled why the club would send him messages about the wonderful air conditioning and what he really meant by the "climate", was it tongue in cheek or what? A question about images in old publications

Do you know whether images in old issues of Radio Mirror (and the same magazine under varying titles) can be used on Wikipedia? As I have been browsing online issues from 1940, I thought that many of the photos would be good for use with Wikipedia articles. I don't know enough about copyright status, so I thought I would seek your opinion. If they can be used, I'll be glad to make some screen captures and find out how and where to upload them. Thanks for sending that information. I checked the sources in upenn for 1967 and 1968 (since the magazines I'm looking at now are from 1940). I couldn't find any renewal for Radio Mirror or Radio and Television Mirror in either year, so I guess it would be safe to use images from those issues. I'm still pinching myself, but I discovered here that the 1944 issues of Life magazine are public domain, as are the first 13 issues of 1945. I did a copyright search and it appears to be true. I made a list of the issues and was reviewing them when I saw the Stork Club feature in the issue dated November 6, 1944. This is right up there with dear old Star Trek. Desilu didn't copyright their first year of its production and when Paramount bought them out, they didn't get around to it until 1974-after the show was in syndication. If you find a photo and can positively connect it to Desilu, Paramount or NBC and can verify the dating on it, it's free. I spent quite a few hours with the UPenn books a while back and found that out. Stumbled on Paramount's 1974 original registrations for it on the way to something else. Mmm John Warne Gates needs more work than I'd thought. It's too long, it really needs a significant trim as I really find it quite difficult to read. I'm glad we got to the bottom of that one. Copying is always a pain when it happens. I had a biography copied almost word for word by the BBC of all places a few months back. You wouldn't think they'd do something like that, but I suppose anything's possible. I still have the bio I bought last year to read (it's on my to do list), so with luck there'll be some interesting stuff in there we can use.

I think putting the Joan Robinson Hill stuff forward for PR again is definitely worth a shot. IMHO, the split was messed up a bit as some of the information ended up in the wrong place, like the stuff about her illness which is relevant to her death. I suppose if it was merged again we could just revert back to an earlier version then redo some of the copyediting that happened afterwards. I think you can only list one article at a time on PR, but I'll have to check. If it is the case though perhaps it might be worth listing Death of Joan Robinson Hill then mentioning the previous review and asking for some feedback. This is Paul (talk) 21:19, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

You and the other Wikipedians have been patient in telling me about the mistakes I made, and I've tried to fix the licenses, source information etc. Now I know much better about the process. Good news, I've finished the big LoBrutto book now, so only the themes book and Clockwork to peruse now, I can't imagine I'll add much from those but we'll see. If you want to add anything to Kubrick in the next few days go for it, if not no worries. I don't intend taking it to FAC but just to get it to that GA without it being "brilliant" is fine I think. Silent picture lobby art September 2015

These lobby posters I think are a tad better representative of their articles, a good deal of them lost films. I would like to see more of the silent articles with colorful lobby cards or if possible posters. The original silent patrons were drawn in by the flashy posters that promised. Newspaper adverts (even the smeared smudgy ones) are fine when on viable art can be had.

The first two are short films "Play Safe" (1927) and "A Canine Sherlock Holmes" (1912), I usually try to stay away from shorts but these two wer irresistibly cute. The two Lila Lee films had great newspaper adds with not too much smear so I included them.

Pigpen

I don't suppose you could you quickly take a look at File:Ron "Pigpen" McKernan.jpg? It was (until yesterday) the infobox image on Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, currently up for a GA review. Viriditas has raised concerns about the fair use rationale; specifically the original source (since resolved), it's too big and its quality is too high. I've commented it out for the minute, but I'd rather see if we could fix it up to comply with all the NFCC criteria. I can easily load the existing image into GIMP and shrink it. What do you think? Also-when photos are cropped, any copyright notices which were printed on the border could have been lost. It's very difficult to say this either is not copyrighted or the copyright wasn't renewed unless you can see an uncropped photo with identification as to who took the image, a copy of the photo back because some studios--RKO was one to stamp their copyright notices on the back of their photos-and some proof of dating.

Yes, basically. Take a look at the lower right of this photo zoomed. "Permission granted for newspaper and magazine reproduction." There are other wordings for the rider but they all cover the same thing-newspapers and magazines had permission "up front" to print the photos without copyright problems. Some of the riders have wording that specifically excludes television as the studios feared it at one time. The newspapers and magazines have to be in the public domain--copyright not renewed is the most common reason why. I'll run the magazine with the Misfits photo in it to make sure it's copyright not renewed. We hope (talk) 19:29, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
