Correcting category keys
Thanks for doing this. I use AWB myself but I couldn't devise any automated way to add the DEFAULTSORT and change the category keys to match the year of each article. How did you manage to set this up within AWB? Colonies Chris (talk) 10:10, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
- A find & replace to add the sort key, the it uses the title of the page to add the year in. A bit of custom coding. Rcsprinter (speak) 15:25, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

- Hi! Thanks so much, as always. While the pilot period has wrapped up, the Teahouse will soon enter phase two, which will require a healthy amount of collaboration between the Teahouse WMF folks and the community. I think you'll find a lot of cool things to get involved in once we start sending out the details based on feedback from the report. On that note, the things we still need major help with is inviting newbies to visit the space and being friendly (say "hi" etc!) and awesome (as you always are) at the Q&A forum. - I'm the one who put a CSD tag. For the record, I did notice the lack of reliable sources in the current article and the article deleted last time for lack of sources. Just before I pressed 'save page' after deleting most of the references, I took a look at the talk page and noticed it had been deleted before. Please don't assume one doesn't look at the article and past AfD. I'm not an admin, so I do ask other admins to take a look at the old, deleted article if I'm unsure. I've also had a couple of CSD denied due to the denying admin looking at the deleted article. FYI... - Hey Rcsprinter. I was looking over this and I decided to drop a few thoughts your way. I know it can be difficult when an article you spent that much time and effort over is so quickly deleted, but I am slightly concerned about how you handled it. Just thought I'd give you some tips for the future. Firstly, as with everything on Wikipedia, your first port of call should be the direct person to person approach. Discuss the matter with the admin who deleted the article - admins should always be willing to discuss their actions. Mistakes are made (not that I'm saying this deletion was a mistake) give people a chance to see it as a mistake and fix things themselves. Next, there's deletion review, where you can get more eyes on a deletion, to review the decision. I generally see WP:REFUND as a venue to request userfication or undeletion of PRODs.
Also, I thought you might want to think a bit about how you phrased this note. There were accusations of bad faith in there and a number of statements with little or nothing to back them up. I would have probably mentioned the fact that only 3 people commented on the original AfD and so on. Perhaps if you'd phrased it in a way that wasn't quite so "on the offense", and spoken to the deleting admin first... you'd have had a different outcome... WormTT(talk) 08:59, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Signpost redesign applied to the Main Page
Your new design for the Signpost is excellent. I've shamelessly ripped it off to create a very quick rough of what the Main Page might look like with a similar style: see User:The Anome/Main Page experiment. (Unfortunately, I've messed up the HTML sufficiently to break the alignment between columns, so you'll have to vary the width of the page until "Today's featured article" and "In the news" line up properly.)

- I think that looks quite good. Is it possible to use a more sober font in the "Welcome to Wikipedia" heading, perhaps with slightly more seriffiness? Also, the existing font seems to render a bit oddly for me in Chrome (but it's OK in IE8), leaving little fragments above some wikilinked letters which look almost like diacritics.
- Without the colours of the existing mainpage, it looks a little... oldfashioned.
- However, people tend to get quite attached to their UI, so be prepared for negative reactions...!

I think that the "experiment" version looks good. (a sort of "wikipedia unplugged" or at least a newsprint looking version). but I also like the current version with the coloured backgrounds. It's a shame that there isn't a better way for people to select their preference for main page version they prefer (giving the best of all worlds). I seem to recall some discussion on this in the past, so I wouldn't be surprised if there is now.
Besides that, if this turns into a full blown "redesign the main page", I've long felt that the main page should not include our so called "featured content". It gives the false impression that Wikipedia is "done" (a mostly completed project). I think the main page should have some random page, with a note that Wikipedia is a work in progress, and please join in and help. - jc37 18:32, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- I think the idea is to just perform a relatively superficial design refresh at this point. I believe that attempting to changing the (semantic) content of the main page itself is too great a battle to fight at the moment: any attempt to roll this into a graphic redesign will kill both ideas stone dead. I believe small incremental changes are the only way forward at the moment. However, if you want to propose a truly radical alternative, I suggest you make a mock-up and propose that to the community: there's nothing to stop you doing it, and you might as well be WP:BOLD. -- The Anome (talk) 00:02, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

- And earlier today, I did start this thread.
- As for starting another community-wide discussion, I've got several "in the fire" atm. See [[1]] for one situation. WT:RfA and elsewhere for another. (My contributions history is fairly straight-forward atm.)
- These things are wearying. And though I don't mind being the single voice (at least at first), I sometimes wonder if maybe the fact that I don't participate in off-wiki coordination/communication/etc., auto-fails any proposal/rfc/etc. that I start.
