Nick Bilogorskiy

[edit]

Hi, I've had a look at Nick Bilogorskiy, and there is no evidence that the person is notable; the article also has other issues such as unreferenced biographical details. It could be moved to drafts, to allow you to continue working on it, but I don't want to do that as it's already four months old; however, if you as the article creator were to move it, that would be fine. Alternatively, I will probably have to send it to AfD. Let me know? -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 13:00, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DoubleGrazing- thank you for alerting me. While I am on travel, I'll review and try to deal with the issues we are discussing. Since you read Finnish, could you opine on the relevance of this Helsingin Sanomat source you've already seen? [1] It seems to show Bilogorskiy's image upfront. Here's a Forbes UA reference with his image upfront and a profile [2] - not behind a paywall, hope browser translation works for you (his name is mentioned five or six times). Here's another one [3]. And that was just a quick search. As for Korkuna, I pointed out in The Teahouse discussion that he seems to meet notability via WP:ACADEMIC. Somehow, negative responses are fast, but positive responses are slower. Thank you for your help and insight. Qq8 (talk) 17:17, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that HS article certainly does mention Bilogorskiy, several times. However, it only reports what he says, rather than covering him as the subject. I'm not saying it wouldn't count towards GNG notability, but it is a bit on the weak side, and obviously not enough on its own.
And no, I don't think Korkuna satisfies WP:NACADEMIC #2. That award isn't probably "highly prestigious" enough, and it's arguable whether it's even "academic"; besides, he didn't even finish on the top podium. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 17:39, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, understood about HS. I see many refs that cover Bilogorskiy, but if there's not enough good evidence (hope to check today), I can move to draft. For Korkuna, the ICPC is indeed highly prestigious and well-known in academia and tech industry. The scale of the competition is massive - hundreds if not thousands of universities worldwide train multiple teams, then there are regionals, then world finals in some country. I'd compare this to the Olympic games, except it's for brains not muscles, there is only one podium (not like different athletics disciplines or running for different distances), and tech companies want to hire anyone who even went to world finals. Universities are academic, the contest is about algorithmic problem-solving (which is taught to Computer Science students), so I don't see any problem calling it academic. And a gold medal is a gold medal :) There is actually only one podium every year at ICPC, not like in sports where the same athlete can earn five gold medals in two weeks. Really, it's a big achievement (and I am not related to ICPC in any way). Qq8 (talk) 20:13, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Another quick question that bothered me for some time: take a look at Ref [9] for Bilogorskiy, it's a conference bio (at a prominent conference - I never went there, but hear about it regularly). The bio doesn't quote Bilogorskiy, it's not self-published, and conferences are normally run by committees (editorial independence). So, does this ref count as a worthwhile source for facts? Does it count as a good or weak ref for notability? Thx Qq8 (talk) 20:55, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I added the main official source about ICPC 2008 - there were 6700 (with two zeros) teams at all regional rounds. Also it looks like the problem with histmerge is resolved, or let me know if I need to do something. I am hoping that the Korkuna question is resolved, so we I can focus on Bilogorskiy.
