RE: your msg

I certainly tried to explain the situation on the editor's talk page when he was an IP. If you look at the history at talk:mitty you will see that he went back and removed the ip sigs and substituted his new user name. That aside I certainly see your point and unfortuneately am not ablee to help like i used to. I replied here because my phone lets me make a new section but not a regular edit and i only get a couple hours a week to edit on a computer. VisualEditor news

  • From Thursday, Internet Explorer 11 users will get VisualEditor. Support for earlier versions is coming next. [1] [2] [3]

Future software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf20) is on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since September 4. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis on September 9, and on all Wikipedias on September 11 (calendar).
  • You will soon confirm a "Thanks" inline instead of in a dialog. [4]
  • You can read more about the plan to move to Phabricator, a tool that will help people develop the MediaWiki software and report bugs. [5]

Problems

  • There were problems with JavaScript and CSS on Friday, September 5 because of a code error.

Grid Refs <-> Lat & long

I don't know if this is your sort of thing but... Do you know if there is a tool which will automatically complete the Grid Ref &/or Lat & Long sections of Template:EH listed building row if one or the other is included? As you know I've been working on Scheduled Monuments in Somerset and its 7 sub lists (over 670 entries). I know several ways to look them up and insert them manually which I've been doing on List of Scheduled Monuments in Bath and North East Somerset but wanted to automate the process for the others. I have a vague memory of a discussion related to WLM last year about whether this is possible but can't find it now.— Rod talk 11:58, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Recent software changes

  • You can now change the style of links to disambiguation pages. This is done with the mw-disambig CSS class. [6] [7]
  • There was a problem on right-to-left wikis with Wikidata log entries. The text was messy in watchlists and recent changes. The problem is now fixed. The same problem will be fixed soon for user names. [8] [9] [10]
  • New users are randomly chosen for a test on 12 Wikipedias. They get messages with ideas of articles to edit. The ideas come from what they have already edited. [11]

Problems

  • There was a problem with loading images on September 10. [12]

VisualEditor news

  • If you don't select text when you add a link, the link now shows a number. [13]
  • The citation tool no longer offers to reuse a citation if there are none on the page yet. [14] [15]
  • You can now use help buttons in the "Page settings" menu to see what the options are for. [16]

Future software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf21) is on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since September 11. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis on September 16, and on all Wikipedias on September 18 (calendar).
  • These changes are coming with the new version:
    • If you use Internet Explorer 7, JavaScript will no longer work. JavaScript tools and scripts will no longer work in that browser. You should update to a newer browser. [17] [18] [19]

Utah Territorial Statehouse

Re:Utah Territorial Statehouse, it looks like a pretty good article right now. It seems to have grown organically since 2006 when half of it was written, and might even be a candidate for GA. Recent software changes

Problems

  • There was a problem on the English Wikipedia on September 19. It was due to edits on a template used on many pages.
  • Sites were down for users in the Pacific area around 7:00 UTC on September 20. It was due to a problem in the San Francisco data center.
  • There were two bad bugs messing up articles in some browsers in VisualEditor. We fixed the bugs and updated the sites. [21] [22]

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf22) is on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since September 18. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis on September 23, and on all Wikipedias on September 25 (calendar).
  • If you have more than 2000 notifications, the oldest ones will be removed.[23] [24]
  • In the "Vector" skin, the icon used for users will show a neutral gender. [25] [26]
  • The VisualEditor template tool now tells you if a required field is missing. [27]
  • The "Cancel" button of the VisualEditor save window is now called "Resume editing". This shows that you can still edit and you won't lose your changes. [28]
  • There are new keyboard shortcuts in VisualEditor. Use Ctrl+Shift+6 for code and Ctrl+Shift+5 for strikethrough. [29] [30]
  • In VisualEditor, you can now see that you are switching to the source editing mode. Before, it was not clear it was happening. [31]

Future site changes

  • You can see a plan for the move to Phabricator. It's the new tool to track bugs. A guided tour will be done via video on September 24. [32]

RSC Residence

Over at Wikiproject Chemistry, you mentioned that you're the Wikipedian in residence at RSC. There's obviously some controversy over there about your selection, given that you are a non-chemist. I personally don't have any idea what the RSC sees as your role, or what resources are at your disposal. One suggestion I have for someone who does not have a technical background but does have the support of a chemistry organization would be to try and tackle some of the Chemistry image requests. For all the ones that are going to be basically photos of this or that, you can very likely call around to different academic chemistry labs that are likely to have the relevant thing - chances are there will be a grad student who is willing to take a bit of time to let you take a photo of some powder or whatever, or set up a reaction flask, etc.

If your role is supposed to be more community outreach than actually editing / improving articles, I'm guessing you could accomplish much the same thing by just going around teaching grad students how to navigate licensing and uploads, etc. The problem with that is that the backlog isn't very long for simple photos. Recent software changes

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf1) is on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since September 25. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis on September 30, and on all Wikipedias on October 2 (calendar).
  • Errors from Scribunto (Lua) are now shown on the page. Before, you had to click on "Script error" to see them. [36] [37]
  • You can add an "autovalue" for a field in TemplateData. When users add the template to a page, the value will be added automatically. An example is when a clean-up template shows the date it was added. [38]
  • If you change a user preference but don't save it, it now asks if you want to save it. [39] [40]
  • The PDF export tool has changed. The new one has better language support but it doesn't offer ZIM and EPUB formats. [41]

Future changes

  • You can watch a video showing Phabricator, the new tool to track bugs. You can also read more about the move from Bugzilla.
  • JavaScript authors: Many old methods will be removed soon. Please check your scripts and gadgets and replace the old methods by the new ones if needed. [42]

  • If you make a code mistake when editing a Lua script, you won't be able to save your edit. [50] [51]
  • We fixed some more Internet Explorer bugs. If you use Internet Explorer 10, you will be able to use VisualEditor next week. Support for earlier versions is coming next. [52]
  • On Thursday, the tool to edit TemplateData will come to 30 more wikis. [53] [54]
  • You can help sort bugs in the Book and PDF export tool on October 8. [55]

Pigsonthewing, we always contact the person who submitted the nomination to DYK. As nominator, it is your responsibility to respond to any issues that may arise. This includes contacting creators to see whether they're willing to make any necessary modifications to the article if it's something you don't have the information or inclination to handle yourself. Well, you could read the standard DYK notification template above, with phrases like "your submission" and "your nomination's entry" and the request to "respond there as soon as possible", and draw the obvious conclusion—this was your submission—or you could do nothing and see the nomination's eventual failure. Do you monitor your nominations of articles by other people once you've made them, or are they meant to sink or swim on their own? BlueMoonset (talk) 16:06, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

So let me see if I understand you: when you submit a DYK nomination, you are under no obligation to respond to issues that may come up in the course of that nominations review? If I have this correct, at what point can those who try to keep the process going conclude that you won't be responding to the issues that are preventing a nomination's approval. @Jayfkay: The material on was rightly removed from Ursula and Sabina Eriksson by User:EchetusXe, presumably because it seemed to be an advertisement, was written in the first person, failed to meet our WP:BLP, WP:SOAPBOX and WP:NPOV policies, and lacked independent, reliable sources. This accords with the advice I gave you when you posted here on this matter in September 2012, but which you appear to have ignored. @Pigsonthewing:, What i am saying is, in "Template:Infobox film awards" there are two parameters one is Best Film Jury Choice and other is Best Film Viewers Choice meas there are two type of Besy Film Awards. In Article 1st ARY Film Awards, both parameters should have linked to their respective articles, one Best Film parameter is already linked to its article and other i want you to linked it.
