Speedy deletion nomination of MTU Detroit Diesel Australia
[edit]A tag has been placed on MTU Detroit Diesel Australia, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion:
- It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
- It does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. (See section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.)
If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. 71.199.125.210 (talk) 15:46, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

strikecomments in an article? - Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time ... - I've reverted. - Hmmmm. To borrow a phrase: "No comment on the merits" of your "solution".
- but that is an inappropriate method - Perhaps. As I said: "it seemed like a good idea at the time ... "
- for dealing with contentious material. - The material is not "contentious", it is fantasy based on someone's inadequate WP:OR.
- Why would you
- Anyway, thanks for the note on my talk page. It caused me to review what I'd done, come to a conclusion not greatly different from the one you came to, go sharpen my secateurs, and prune out (rather than strike out) the rubbish. Both the article and I are indebted to you. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 14:57, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
- No problem. By "merits", I mean that I can't comment on the content due to my own ignorance of the topic. I don't know enough to make a judgement call as to whether the struck parts should have been deleted or not. I've never heard of the dish, which admittedly, didn't sound appetizing. If I knew more, I might have taken a chainsaw to it myself, but instead I just made sure you knew that I had to revert, so you could go trim as needed. - Oh ye of little faith! But then, even though millions of Britons go have a curry at the local Indian restaurant after a long evening at the pub, the thought of a curry on top of a stomach full of English beer actually sounds nauseating to me ... Never-the-less, after decades of reacting similarly to you, I "bit the bullet" and tried one. I was surprised to find that, on a cold winter's night, it was a tasty, filling and warming meal. (Sort-of like Pea & Ham soup in a way ... ) I have yet to have one (or want to have one) on a summer's evening, but now and then I have one in winter. (I think my average consumption is approximately 0.4 floaters-per-annum.)
- I would have been astounded to discover that a lad who had not been south of the Tropic of Cancer knew anything about floaters, but yes your approach achieved your intended outcome. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 15:42, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Hey, I saw one of you edit comment's that made me chuckle a little (Mark Tandy). Basically they are designed for when a sailor is at sea and they fall overboard, should either A) the fluro chemical packs carried by all waterborne sailors run out or B) they haven't for some reason got any, it can make it easier to be found at night. From my experience on my HMAS Newcastle voyage/very small deployment it would come in real handy should stuff go down. Nford24 (Want to have a chat?) 12:39, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link; it has, at last, added some logic to the situation.
- For months I've been making sarcastic comments to RAAF & Army guys (who've agreed with me), and occasionally Navy guys, (funny that - one never sees a woman in camo - or at least, I haven't), and I've heard the "in case they fall in the water" explanation several times, (and also the "when they're on the deck of an Aircraft Carrier", which is interesting, seeing that Oz hasn't had an Aircraft Carrier for decades ... ) but the section you've provided a link to says (amongst other things):
- Before the uniform was introduced, there was some confusion as to why a disruptive pattern was used at all ... The primary reason for the use of the AUSCAM pattern is not to provide camouflage, but to align with the other services which use the distinctly Australian pattern, making personnel identifiable as Australian, and through the use of the littoral colours as naval personnel.
- Suddenly, it's no longer a contradiction! In fact, it's almost sensible!! Thanks, Pdfpdf (talk) 14:15, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
The uniform is alright but its so easy to get hot in it, the old 9's were more comfortable and dressy.

[edit]Greetings again, Pdfpdf. Many thank-yous for your kind words: it all helps. In case you hadn't noticed, I've also set the ball rolling over at List of Portuguese general officers (Peninsular War) and List of Spanish general officers (Peninsular War) (but not going to start on List of British general officers (Peninsular War) until I feel I can take the underconstruction tags off the others). However, the three are mere complements and/or distractions to my real project: Chronology of events of the Peninsular War which is, I'm afraid, taking rather longer than I anticipated, and which reminds me: ravenous sons due home for lunch... gotta dash! Category clutter
[edit]The overcategorization by awards is discoraged by WP:OC#Awards. But how is it at all helpful to have say Akihito with a wall of text listing of awards that make it hard to see the categories that truly define him?John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:04, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
- John is correct, when there are 10 or 11 lines of categories, Pdfpdf, then none of them stand out. It becomes a big block of text. The question is....of all of the categories that could be used, which ones are selected? That is a judgment call. Wikipedia has guidelines but ultimately, the decision is reevaluated every time someone looks at the categories for an article. There is no Ten Commandments of Categories. Like everything else on Wikipedia, it evolves. Liz Read! Talk! 23:16, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
- Dear Liz, Thank you for your posting. I have never said that John was wrong. I have never disagreed that "when there are 10 or 11 lines of categories, then none of them stand out." (In fact, I have never expressed an opinion on either of those matters.)
- (What I have done is ask John for an explanation/definition for the terms he is using, and pointers to the pages that describe the policies that support his opinions. He continues not to do this. Whether this is because he won't (and I can't imagine why he won't), or can't, I don't know - he doesn't explain himself.)
- However, I do dispute your statement that he is "correct". He has a POV that he holds strongly (which he is completely entitled to do if he so wishes), yet he refuses to explain or discuss it.
- With your statement "when there are 10 or 11 lines of categories, then none of them stand out", you are the first person who has made any attempt to describe what you (and I guess/deduce John also), see as a problem. (Thank you! And yes, I agree that "when there are 10 or 11 lines of categories, none of them stand out.")
- But personally, I don't see this as a problem, or even an issue. Yes, my POV is different to yours.
- (If you would like me to explain my POV to you, and you think that me explaining it will achieve something useful, I would be happy to do so. To date, no-one has asked me anything about my POV. With the notable exception of yourself, they have all been far to busy asserting that their POV is WP policy (without explaining which policy/policies), and imposing their POV on me without making any attempt to explain or justify it.)
- The question is....of all of the categories that could be used, which ones are selected? - I agree that this is one question that could be asked, but I do not agree that this is the fundamental question or even a fundamental question. I certainly do not agree that this is the question.
- My view is that: Whether or not this is a judgment call depends entirely on the fundamental reasons for having categories.
- I hope that clarifies some things for you. Again, thank you very much for your posting. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 08:34, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- When I'm not sure if this clarifies everything but you effectively express your point of view, Pdfpdf! This section is also probably what John is referring to (from Wikipedia:Overcategorization):
"However, not every verifiable fact (or the intersection of two or more such facts) in an article requires an associated category. For lengthy articles, this could potentially result in hundreds of categories, most of which aren't particularly relevant. This may also make it more difficult to find any particular category for a specific article. Such overcategorization is also known as 'category clutter'."
- So this statement is a big part of it. Also, when an Editor is really active like John (I think he has over 200K edits), one starts to base decisions not only on guidelines but also on experience because one runs into similar situations all of the time.
- I'm not saying that being an Editor is similar to being a doctor but I doubt that each time you see a physician, she looks up your symptoms in a medical reference text. Why not? Because she has probably dealt with many people with bad backs, sore throats, irritating rashes, trouble sleeping, sprained ankles, etc.. Yes, she could dig up a medical text to verify to the patient that she is basing her diagnosis on scientific information but she will normally come to her conclusion based on her education and her experience dealing with patients with similar ailments.
- Like I said, I think John's basic assessment that category clutter is bad is appropriate and it's unfortunate if his explanation (or mine) doesn't addresses all of your concerns about this one case. Liz Read! Talk! 17:49, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Afterthought/questions
[edit]Why is it an issue whether or not categories "define" the subject of the article? They are called "categories", not "definitions". Perhaps foolishly, I have assumed that categories are there to categorise, not to define. Surely it is the role of the article to define the subject, not the role of the categories? Pdfpdf (talk) 08:34, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- I can't read the minds of the original authors of Wikipedia:Categorization (and all of the associated category guidelines), but I think that selecting those categories which are "defining" is a way to narrow down the number of categories to the most important. Theoretically, even an article of minor importance could have dozens and dozens of applicable categories and attributing them all could take up more space on the page than the body of the article itself. At this point, in order to make things manageable, a decision has to be made on what to include and what not to include and the powers that be chose one criteria to be that those categories that most define the subject of the article. For example, parenthood might be the most important aspect of a subject's life (as he or she assesses it) but we don't have hundreds of thousands of articles listed under a Mothers or Fathers category because this doesn't define an individual from others.
- I will say that though, in practice, this guideline is not always observed. One example I'm running into (I'm categorizing male actors) is that every rapper who has had a cameo or bit part in a film seems to be placed in Category:American male film actors. Now considering that rappers are primarily musicians and many aren't know for their acting skills, this category is misapplied because it is a minor aspect of their lives. But fans of rappers want them to get credit for all aspects of their career and frequently add these categories on to their pages. So, there are guidelines (how things should work) and reality (how categories are actually used) and these two don't always mirror each other. Since there are over 4 million articles on the English Wikipedia, it's easy to find examples that contradict the guidelines....but when a dispute reaches a CfD discussion, guidelines take precedence over practice. Liz Read! Talk! 18:07, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- An excellent example of where things are wrong with understanding categorisation (sic) have a look at the argument at: [1] - hope that links ok. well worth a read and why if one of the category usual suspects arive at the door, aikido methods are the best, make sure they go through the front door and leave by the rear door, check they have taken no possessions on them, and close both doors quietly after them. sats 03:03, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Greetings Pdfpdf. Thanks for your note (I'll get back to that), but your "wiki-abdication" note above – temporary, I hope – requires a more urgent response. I don't know what's behind it, but I've seen too many "normal people" throw in the towel here for it not to affect me (or should that be the other way round?) and most of them actually chose to ignore my pleas for them to stay... However, from one relatively "normal" person to another, I'd just like to point out that, apart from the obvious majority of users who sincerely wish to participate constructively in this great project, Wikipedia does seem to attract the class of people (dare I say pathologies?) you refer to – it's one of the inevitable drawbacks of a system based on AGF and the technological impossibility of effectively blocking people who seem to take some sort of childish delight in gaming the system (they simply return later from a different connection). I can just picture them, sitting there at their keyboards, smirking, and sincerely believing they are superior in each 'n' every way to the rest of us mere mortals.
Although the direct and indirect damage they cause is disruptive, to say the least, they are clearly a minority – like the vandals who get a kick out of destroying things in the street – and, even when they resort to bullying tactics, are more to be pitied than censured. I suspect that over time, most of 'em will get bored here (do ot feed the trolls) and move on to some of the newer offers of entertainment out there in the form of social networks, where they can enjoy a more immediate response... those that don't somehow manage to stay the course and move on up to achieve admin status :) In the meantime, don't let 'em get your goat (link included in case you don't use that expression in your neck of the woods).
Back to your note. It does actually coincide with much of what I've just written above and, although I don't "need" your support, it's nice to know that it's out there :) Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 12:04, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

[edit]I stumbled on to Wikicountitis and I was just wondering what tool you used to get some of this data, especially in Table 2. I see you are far up enough to be in the Top 5000 but some of the other columns are more elusive to me. Liz Read! Talk! 23:44, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

I should have looked at the page source but I actually thought you used a tool from Toolserver. Thanks for the reply! Liz Read! Talk! 15:59, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Deletion discussion about Sortable list of Attorneys-General of Australia
[edit]Hello, Pdfpdf,
I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Sortable list of Attorneys-General of Australia should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sortable list of Attorneys-General of Australia .
If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

dumb
[edit]islands of the goldfields esperance... dumb... try looking for the coastline of wa art - viz - Coastal regions of Western Australia - the imagination could get fired there and not goldfields esperance - just a rude suggestion :)
- if that doesnt seem rude enough try consider the lillies South_Coast_Western_Australia - perhaps consider the bremer bay trench [2] - I strongly suggest a speedy non controversial emptying of the goldfields esperance crap to esperance coast? consider the alcohol - perhaps the southern coast should be southern coast from windy harbour to bremer bay (yay the white shark, the white shark) and east of there to esperance the esperance coast, and further east Eucla coast - then it would at least 'fit (ah again)' the weather report nomenclature at least, but please anything but the goldfields that denies the labour that went into the coast regions article, the sweat, the gore, the blood, etc etc. consider the sandgroper in all its glory (the white shark, the white shark... of south australia in the last minutes of the programme) and the crow eater in its munificence... in view of the productivity of the bremer bay trench, it all requires something other than goldfields esperance. please consider the environment, and oceanic trenches, and the hydrocarbons... thank you...
the more i look at it in this blistering evening heat of perth, south west, albany, esperance, and eucla coasts as in the BOM distinction should be sub categories of the southern coast - which would be all the more easy for the users/readers to get a handle,
trust all that makes sense... please feel free to foist some pirate flag and shiver the timbers if in fact the idea needs tweaking... satusuro 14:08, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry sunshine, but this crow-eater seems to be having problems with the sand-groaper dialect.
- Further, I naïvely assumed that you Westerners had your act together and had ONE "universal" system of regions. (Silly me! Why should you be different from anyone else?)
- I was drawing a one-to-one relationship between the nine (+Perth) RDCA regions and ten "Islands of the [RDCA region]" categories. I think I've determined that your generally unintelligible reply implies that this was a VERY (OK - VERY) naïve assumption! (No, I don't understand your unintelligible reply!!)
- So, given that you are "The venerable and revered grey-beard" of the subject matter area, PLEASE have a look at Category:Islands of Western Australia and think about a set of categorisations that DOES cover the islands.
- Then, perhaps, you can add a section to Regions of Western Australia that poor ignorant foreigners like me can understand?
- (BTW: In case there's still some ambiguity, I'm not in the least offended by those bits of your response that I can understand (nor those bits I can't) and it appears to me that you've given me licence to be equally scathing in my response, these factors being fundamental in our mutual enjoyment of our communications. And as an aside, isn't it a shame that I feel I need to add this section in case some (talk page stalker) gets offended, because I know you aren't, and you know I'm not.)
- So, who do you fancy in the cup tomorrow? Pdfpdf (talk) 12:49, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Potential sockpuppet of Levineps
[edit]Recently, User:Oriole85 (contribs) has been sporadically popping up on my watchlist for category-related changes. A lot of new users do that, so it wasn't a particularly noteworthy thing for me. But then he kept showing up with a higher frequency, oftentimes making (what I thought to be) completely unnecessary over-categorizations to articles. I've been on Wikipedia long enough to know that User:Levineps (contribs) is one of the most notorious over-categorizers we've ever seen (and has the community sanctions, block records, and bans to show for it). So, I did about two minutes' worth of research and discovered that Oriole85's account was created / his edits began on November 5, 2013. When was the last edit by Levineps? November 4, 2013. That is not a coincidence IMO. I don't have (a) the time right now, nor (b) the motivation to formally open an SPI, but I'm hoping that one of the many people I'm notifying about this does. If you're wondering why you're being pinged about this, it's because I saw where you were one of the people who has left messages on Levineps' talk page at some point regarding his inappropriate editing. So now, in addition to all of the aforementioned issues with Levineps, it looks like a probably sockpuppet to throw into the mix. Jrcla2 (talk) 05:30, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
