As it doesn't appear that Steve Smith (general) ever played footy or cricket, my notability radar is lacking. Could you please have a look at the article and at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history#Is this guy notable? and contribute as you see fit. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 16:52, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I have added my 2c worth! Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 01:30, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the complement.

I watch a fair few school pages, and it's depressing how often the expression, grammar and spelling are just plain appalling. But we can but try. HiLo48 (talk) 12:27, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

templates

[edit]

Hi - editors with good faith issues regarding content about a living person can add templates - those templates should not be removed unless resolution occurs - the issues are clearly still there so please as is usual practice - stop removing the template - Yesterday I was on a mobile device - tonight I will attempt to NPOV the content - thanks - Youreallycan 19:02, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

libelous comments?

[edit]

What do I do when someone starts making libelous comments? Pdfpdf (talk) 09:57, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You'll need first to provide more detail about who is libeling whom. Oh, and it will help if you stop edit-warring -- you're over WP:3RR. That report you filed would inevitably have been WP:BOOMERANG if you hadn't botched it. Nomoskedasticity (talk) 12:30, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
a)Why do I need to provide more detail? I asked in several places, and got no reply, "What do I do when someone starts making libelous comments?" I still do not have any sort of useful reply that addresses my question of "What do I do when someone starts making libelous comments?" Do I need to put another Help me request on my page to get a useful answer?
b) Oh, and it will help if you stop edit-warring - What will it help?
c) you're over WP:3RR - Yes. I know. So what?
d) That report you filed would inevitably have been WP:BOOMERANG if you hadn't botched it. - No, I didn't "botch it". I achieved exactly what I wanted. The other editor has been blocked for 3 days - or at least, that's what somebody below says. I assume his statement is accurate. As I said in my report, "I don't see why he should be rewarded for being more obnoxious than everybody else." Well, now he has been blocked. That's what I wanted. That's what I achieved.
e) Thank you for replying. I find it disappointing that it took 2.5 hours before anyone replied to my help request. But thank you for being the first. Cheers,Pdfpdf (talk)
I'm astounded how remarkably successful I have been in achieving my my aims.
There are now a significant number of people engaged in sensible discussion, listening to each other, and mutually working together to improve the article.
This is a VAST improvement over the situation where there was one disruptive intransigent editor bludgeoning his point of view over the top of other editors too polite and too reasonable and too sensible to descend to the use of the disruptive editor's modus opperandi. Good. Pdfpdf (talk) 13:48, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

[edit]

You are currently blocked for 72 hours for edit warring, along with the other party to the dispute. That quantity of reverts and lack of productive talkpage dialogue combines to put you both well over the line. Moreschi (talk) 19:00, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

C'est la vie. "It is a far, far better thing I do, than I have ever done". As I could get no response to my requests on how to address the problem, in ignorance I chose the path I did. If what you say is accurate, I achieved my goal. (Though perhaps not in the way I would have preferred ... ) Pdfpdf (talk) 11:41, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm told that the other editor has been unblocked. Can anyone explain why I am still blocked, but he isn't? Pdfpdf (talk) 14:16, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, he is obviously a valued contributor and you are a guy with an attitude who does not know when to kiss ass. jmcw (talk) 15:03, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! Of course!!! That had completely slipped my mind. Yes, that must be the explanation. Thanks John!! Pdfpdf (talk) 15:07, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You probably feel irritated by the outcome of your run-in with a self-appointed policy policeman. Don't be discouraged. Enjoy some tea. Writegeist (talk) 03:34, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well thank you! Most appreciated!
No, I don't feel irritated with the outcome. But I am still extremely irritated by the self-appointed policy policeman who doesn't seem to understand what he's appointed himself to police, and seems to be well practiced in abusing the "spirit of the law".
Personally, after having lived in Holland for 5 years, I'm a coffee man. But I do enjoy the occasional cup of Turkish tea.
So once again, thank you! Pdfpdf (talk) 11:53, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Kudos also for disdaining to participate in the sad and all too common spectacle of a sackcloth-and-ashes unblock request full of bullshit mea culpas and promises to mend errant ways and atone for grievous sins, etc.
Why thank you.
Being Australian, like the vast majority of my compatriates, I have been intensively schooled in, have had much exposure to, and have accumulated lots of experience in detecting and recognising, male cow faeces. Accordingly, it has been impressed upon me (and my compatriates) since birth that using male cow faeces for purposes other than humour is simply unacceptable behaviour.
I used to be a coffee-shop man during my visits to Amsterdam so I don't remember much about them... Respect and best wishes, Writegeist (talk) 06:39, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Amsterdam. Yes, I understand. I was living in the Hague. (Different scenario.) In more recent years I have had a colleague who has lived for many years in Amsterdam. He takes extreme pleasure in being rude about my "poncy Haagse" accent! I guess Amsterdam is like the sixties: if you remember it, you weren't there!  ;-) Pdfpdf (talk) 13:30, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Response(s) to the news that the protaginist has been unblocked

[edit]
If you make a reasonable unblock request right now, it should be accepted, as Youreallycan was just unblocked for doing the same. SilverserenC 09:38, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the heads up, and thanks for going to the effort of informing me. Most appreciated. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:30, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. What is a "reasonable unblock request"? Pdfpdf (talk) 13:55, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Will happily unblock you if you agree to the same restrictions YRC did on his talk page. Just stick on here an {{unblock|Your reason here}}. — foxj 18:24, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Having left a note on the blocking administrator's page, he has indicated that if you agree to behave yourself (which I take to mean no more edit warring, no personal attacks, etc), he will be fine if I unblock you. AniMate 19:10, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A decent offer from two commendable admins. But it was a three-day block and there's only one left to run. Why bother affecting the requisite role of a naughty child who has to promise to "behave" before Teacher allows him/her to resume participation in a class project? Writegeist (talk) 20:24, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, to two admins of good will, may you prosper and propagate! That admins are 'nothing special', there is no advantage to kissing ass to no one special. Just wait and bear your burden as 'some one special'. jmcw (talk) 00:02, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you to all five of you for such generous replies. I am humbled. (No - really - for once I'm being serious.) Pdfpdf (talk) 10:36, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In chronological order:
Silver seren: As I said, thanks for the heads up, and thanks for going to the effort of informing me. Most appreciated. Pdfpdf (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Foxj: Thank you; that's very good of you. (There must be a better word than "good", but it has been a long day and I can't think of one.) I don't wish to sound (or be) ungreatful, but I'm afraid I must reply that I am not willing to accept your conditions. This is not intended to be any sort of negative reflection on your very generous and unsolicited response, for which I feel I must once again thank you. Pdfpdf (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
AniMate: Many thanks to you, too. For Your Information: As I am currently unable to edit other pages, I sent the blocking admin an email asking him why I was still blocked. His email response to me was similar to the response you got, with the comment that he didn't think the other editor should have been unblocked, but given that he had, it only seemed fair etc. I would like to point out that I made NO personal attacks, nor any "etc."s. So, I will also respond to you: I don't wish to sound (or be) ungreatful, but I'm afraid I must reply that I am not willing to accept your conditions. This is not intended to be any sort of negative reflection on your very generous and unsolicited response, for which I feel I must once again thank you. Pdfpdf (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Writegeist: "O ye of little faith!" After having acknowleged and accepted your praise for my behaviour, how could I possibly renege and sustain any credibility? Fear not! I simply asked two questions - "Why is he unblocked and I'm not?" and "What is a 'reasonable unblock request'?" The answer to the first was promptly and accurately supplied by jmcw, and I quote: "you are a guy with an attitude who does not know when to kiss ass." Pdfpdf (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Jmcw: I had always fully intended to wait, and it's no burden at all. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What a thankless task! Therefore, I thank you for your efforts!!
Despite your diligent efforts in the "Associated schools" section, the varying factions don't seem to be able to make up their collective minds as to what the facts are. So, until they can come up with a consistent set of facts, and support them with some reliable references, I suggest we take the [citation needed] type of approach. What do you think?
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:41, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. No harm applying the rules fully on that site. Most school sites are pretty crap. We're only doing Wikipedia and the schools a favour by being tougher. HiLo48 (talk) 23:46, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good. Thanks for the reply. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 10:47, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Closing a RFD

[edit]

Hi, re this edit: At the top right of most (all?) XFD pages, there's a link to Closing instructions. Sometimes this is shown as Administrator instructions, but they're also the instructions for a non-admin closure. The method varies according to whether you're closing an AFD, TFD, RFD or whatever, so you need to follow the right set. Those for a WP:RFD are at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Administrator instructions. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:38, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you kind sir. (And thank you also for closing it.) Most appreciated! Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 14:52, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Chevalier Legion of Honour

[edit]

Hi there, Re: evidence for Chevalier... well there are more Australians Awarded the Chevalier than other classes. For example there were a number of WWI Diggers awarded the Chevalier and WWII Diggers as well. The present Governor of NSW has a Chevalier as well. I know we could get ridiculous but this one seems fair. --Oliver Nouther (talk) 11:22, 9 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I just didn't have any evidence. Pdfpdf (talk) 11:34, 9 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. Interesting.
a) There seem to be plenty of people adding comments. (Yes, most of them are crap or "me too!" "me too!") I'm not sure what to add that hasn't already been said.
b) Well thank you. Flattery will probably get you exactly what you want.

The problem with Swamilive is that, even if rangeblocked, he still finds ways to create accounts.
