You deleted the TrapWire page

[edit]

Hello, I created the TrapWire page. You deleted it, questioning whether it had any importance at all.

A quick google would have shown you that the company in question is implicated in a surveillance project with connection to US law enforcement and intelligence agencies and is much in the news right now.

Here is my article on the situation: http://venturebeat.com/2012/08/10/wikileaks-trapwire-stratfor-cia/

More information is readily available: http://www.techmeme.com/#a120811p6

Itchy trigger finger?

Ok, number one, I am very big on people coming on this page to tell me I screwed up. I'm here to work for the community, they're my boss, yay. However, abrasiveness is most certainly not in the spirit of assuming good faith so I would hope that your remarks would perhaps contain fewer insinuations when dealing with any editor here.
Secondly, I think you've misunderstood the speedy criteria criteria here. No one was questioning you personally or insinuating that there was something inherently unimportant about the subject at hand. However, the article as it stood was not sufficient in its attempts to show the significance of its subject and as such was deleted after allowing a period of 24 hours for the article to be improved.
Though I would personally question the veracity of the websites mentioned above, I do note that there are a few mentions of it in some press over the last few days. Whilst I personally am unsure as to whether these make the subject notable, I have userfied the article, which will allow you to edit in until such time as you feel it is ready to be republished. You can find the article here.
Good luck with your editing and remember, assume good faith. We're all here to work together. PanydThe muffin is not subtle 00:10, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think my IP address is constantly changing. So, sometime It shows that Your IP is blocked by checkuser. This glitch is very annoying. Can you help me in this matter ? GiantBluePanda (talk) 20:42, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm not too knowledgeable on this matter. It's likely that your ISP is changing your IP, as some are wont to do for whatever reason. You could give them a call and ask. Also, are you using a proxy? Sometimes people will have a proxy for work, or to break into Pandora, or whatever. If you're using one of those, make sure you sign off before you go on Wikipedia. Unfortunately (or fortunately? Who knows!) I am not a Checkuser at this moment in time. However, Fluffernutter is, and she is very nice. So if either of those explanations are rubbish I suggest you ask someone more knowledgeable than myself. Hope that helped, and if not, good luck and my apologies! ref question

[edit]

Hi there, Fionnuala Mary Collins the artist here. I can't seem to get my page to work. I have attached about 15 links to references from national newspaper (such as the times, independent, the star, evening herald) articles about the paintings but it is still telling me that there are no third party references. I'm a little confused. If you could give me some help I'd really appreciate it! Thanks, Fionuala — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fionnualamarycollins (talkcontribs) 16:13, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • (talk page stalker) The notice at the top of the page is a template. It is placed there by editing, not by any automated process, and it has no ability to detect when there are enough references. The way to get rid of it if you believe you have resolved the issue is to edit the page to remove the bit of code at the top that looks like this: {{Refimprove|date=August 2012}}. It is also usually preffered that the citations be used inline throughout the article so that readers may see which source was used to support which specific part of the article, if you could fix that I think it would be ready to be resubmitted to AFC or moved to article space. Hi Panyd! I'm curious what you think is the implied significance of QArea Company. (There are also no references.) Thanks! heather walls (talk) 07:39, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, they certainly cleaned it up from when I gave them that advice (which means they're learning, yay!) but I was actually talking about the version which existed before I deleted it. It had a very large list of seemingly important business awards they had earned. I also thought their semi-global reach (USA/Europe/Middle East) would earn them some notability.
Having said that, looking through the current version where they've pretty much taken all of that out or rephrased it in a way that doesn't really speak to their notability so much as it struts them about like peacocks, it kind of leaves us with two choices. They may well not be notable, but someone could hold their hand and we might get some good contributors out of it. We could also nominate it for deletion with a polite explanation.
I am stepping away from it seeing as I already deleted the article and spoke to them about it. PanydThe muffin is not subtle 10:11, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Libcom.org

[edit]

Hi Panyd, I took up your advice and did a search on Factiva and have found a pretty good selection of articles mentioning the site, including stuff from the Independent (using it as a source in an article: "...according to the left-wing website libcom.org...") and the New Internationalist (as a recommended website on anarchism) alongside some smaller publications. Recent speedy deletions

[edit]

Hi there. I noticed that you deleted a few articles on emergency messages as copyright violations. However, the source document was a federal government publication that, as far as I'm aware, is in the public domain. It may be preferable to tag the articles with {{Include-USGov}}. - Eureka Lott 20:49, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I second this. While it is possible that a government website can include copyrighted material, this looks to be public domain. In any case, it's not unambiguous copyright infringement. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 21:02, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Political positions of Paul Ryan

[edit]

We need this article. (Note that the corresponding article for Sarah Palin was begun upon her selection as presumptive VP nominee.) It appears that you deleted an article and moved it to one user's userspace for him or her to work on. It's a subject that will interest many people so consigning it one userspace is inappropriate.

I created a stub but didn't post it when I saw that something had been deleted. I'll hold off a bit but the need for the article will grow apace.

With a subject getting this much attention, the initial article might be a mess but the Wikipedia editing process will work very well because of the large number of eyeballs on it. I suggest that we go ahead with a stub. If, after a couple days, you think there's reason to delete, it could be revisited. JamesMLane t c 21:11, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Would you believe that all but three sentences of that article aren't a copyright violation/excessive plagarism? I've no doubt the woman is notable, but either we've continuously copied her online biography (to the point where I can't see a version that isn't problematic), or there's this wonderful feedback loop going on whereby she writes about herself on here (or we do) and then her interns copy-paste it onto her website (which is held in full copyright) without attribution. I'm really not willing to undo this but I don't think re-writing it would be tricky, like you said, 5 sources. The article is all of two sentences long, and I don't see where it asserts any significance whatsoever. Can you tell me what/where? Thanks, DoriTalkContribs 21:00, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it has two sources and was founded by someone who appears to be quite notable. That certainly doesn't mean the subject passes our notability criteria but does lend an air of significance to the subject. Make sense? PanydThe muffin is not subtle 21:03, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Did you look at the sources? Neither one (IMO!) counts as a RS with significant coverage, as they're both just advertisements for conferences where the founder is speaking. Yes, the founder is notable, and that's why he has his own page—but that shouldn't (again, IMO) confer significance on any companies he might found. I've put it up for PROD. I know it sounds strange but I received a letter addressed to you. It's about your college application & enrolment. Probably we live in the same building, and I got this letter because someone misread your flat number, but the building address is correct. So please drop me a note in my letterbox or below my door (number 72) with your flat number, and I'll drop the letter on yours. Please also leave an answer on this talk page when you've done it, or if you want to tell me something.

Agree with HJ Mitchell that the conversation is very odd. Yes, they fixed the lights in the hallway about a month ago. Done, sent to FREEPOST WIKIPEDIA. This IP user you blocked recently is protesting rather strongly they've done nothing wrong, and from the at-a-glance view of someone with no real context (ie: me) it looks like they may actually have a point. Maybe not. I just wanted to let you know to get hold of them at User talk:86.40.96.187 if you want to chime in, explain your logic, and/or reconsider your decision. Your explanation

[edit]
As you suggested to go to your talk page, I have just been wondering on my own how or why it is you came to the conclusion that I interfered with the reverts of other editors? I don't recall doing such a thing. I'm quite sure I could not have done such a thing, even if I had wanted to, since, as you well know, you blocked me immediately and left me bereft for half the day. --86.40.96.187 (talk) 02:30, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Poor choice of words. Ignored would be more appropriate. Not only ignored, but then accused the editor who reverted your actions of adding insult to injury - rather than of having a valid reason for doing so which did not revolve around your personal feelings.
I understand both your anger and indignation and I have apologised for the mistake, which includes the lack of warning you were given with regards to how your actions appeared to others (i.e. non-constructive and spamming). Now, I understand that you have refuted these allegations and that both I and I would presume other editors, having looked at your contributions, would agree that this was not your purpose.
Having said that, and this is very important, you are not being civil nor do you appear to be amenable to discussion. Civility is not simply refraining from calling people names, but also addresses the tone of your speech, the insinuations made when you speak, and your ability to listen to others and understand their position on an issue (whether or not you agree with it). Be angry at me, fine, I put you out for half a day and again - I am both sorry and have explained my actions - but don't do it to other people.

Hello, some days ago you deleted said article as an A7; there is now a request at WP:Refund to undelete it. As I am loath to undelete over your head, have a look. Yeah, saw it already. We are in a hazy area here (and some of it is admins disgression, anyway); I think the allegations made in the article concerning their achievements are the ones that tilt my opinion towards undeletion. If the article could survive an AfD, I cannot say. I will undelete it (if you are fine with that) without prejudice (and absolutely not saying you were wrong). Or we could send it to deletion review. Anne Block deletion/request for article text

[edit]

Hello. I am writing in regard to the article title Anne Block that you deleted yesterday. I am confused as to why the article was deleted. The article I wrote was in response to the comment from the editor responsible for the original deletion User:CharlieEchoTango stating that he was not opposed to a neutral re-write. See [1] .

The article I submitted was a complete revision. I added additional secondary sources, inline citations, and attempted to address "neutral tone". I feel that no one considered the merit of the article, and instead it was labeled a "re-post" and deleted. I would like the opportunity to access my work and address any issues with regard to sourcing or tone. I am happy to do this on a sandbox or behind the scenes somewhere until people are comfortable with the material.

I think it is sad that all Ms. Block had to do was delete the pages/sourcing several times and then threaten legal action, and now wikipedia has bent to her wishes. I can meet all the criteria for BLP. I can source every point.I just need someone to look at the content instead of deleting everything the second I write it. This all seems backwards to me. It seems that the authors who attempt to source their points and follow process should be worked with, but instead Block bullies everyone and gets her way.

At this point, I would just like to access the work that I did on the "Anne Block" article. I can't find my work or sourcing anywhere. If you could help me get this, and maybe point me in a direction as to what I can do to get this article properly reviewed, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you! Problems with DYK Prep 3 build

[edit]

Panyd, I just had to revise the Credits section for Prep 3: you had omitted the article names from the DYKmake templates, which are crucial: not only is it the link to the nomination template subpage, it's what the bot uses to properly note on each user's talk page and the article's talk page that a DYK has been displayed on the main page. Generally, we just copy the DYKmake template from the nomination template to the prep area credits section, replacing the dummy ones there; what you seem to have done was copy the name of the creator/expander only.

One of the nomination templates doesn't seem to have closed properly: Template:Did you know nominations/Njoo Cheong Seng is not showing up as closed. I think the "yes" may have been omitted from the "passed" parameter, but I'm not positive, and figured you'd want to fix it yourself rather than having my name show up as the person who promoted it if I try to adjust it. Thanks! BlueMoonset (talk) 14:36, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh god I am so sorry. I had a rather extensive break at the beginning of this year and I'm trying to ease my sorry ass into doing the things I love some more. Assembling DYK sets

[edit]

Since you're new to DYK set building, I thought I'd pass along a few pointers when it comes to balancing DYK sets.

First, no more than half of any set should be bios. As I write this, you have a set that contains six bios already, out of eight slots. That's too many. I'll be swapping a couple of bios with hooks from the previous set, which had only two bios. (The other one that can sneak up on you is U.S.-related hooks, which also should not exceed half. Other countries should stick to one, or maybe two slots at most, in a set.)

Second, try to balance the type of lead hook you choose with recent selections. Yours is the fourth lead hook in a row of five that's been a man. Balancing people with places, objects, flora and fauna is ideal, and trying to fit in the occasional woman is good, too. We seem to skew to white males, and it's something to be careful of.

Third, try not to have two similar hooks in a row: same country, same type (bio, building, sports, history), same initial wording, even same unusual word. It can be a balancing act, but usually there's a way to get them in order. And if you can, put a quirky hook last to end the set on an up note. Hello!! Meeooowwww!! Thanks for promoting the Alcatraz articles at DYK. What do you think of my own Mr. Bigglesworth?

Hi Panyd

[edit]

I wasnt aware that editors working on the same project were not allowed to approve each others nominations. Obviously blindness affects us all on some days. Usually it is thougfht useful to have a review by someone who does know something about the subject. Victuallers (talk) 07:52, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was a genuine question. It's certainly against the rules to review an article you nominated, but I can see that was an honest mistake. It is my opinion that you should not be reviewing articles closely linked to your own projects. My question was merely intended to get you to consider this. Laura Hale generates articles like a machine closely related to her work though. PanydThe muffin is not subtle 12:56, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

DYK lead hooks

[edit]

Panyd, I've noticed you filling up the lead hooks in the prep areas for the past few days: I think you've managed to do them all, or virtually all. I'd like to ask you to let the rest of us have a chance at them.

Just about everyone likes to select lead hooks. One of the fun parts of filling up a set is getting the chance to pick the picture that heads it up. Frequently, when we're filling sets that already have a lead, we'll spot another that we think looks good—we don't pick it and instead save in the hopes of it being around for us to choose later. But if someone else grabs all the lead slots, we're locked out, and the one we've been hoping to save doesn't get featured. There are some people who only build complete DYK prep sets—whether I think this is reasonable is another thing altogether—but they're less likely to participate if no prep areas are fully empty.

If you're starting a new set then of course a lead selection needs to be made, but to go two sets ahead as you've just done feels to me like pushing the envelope. I absolutely don't want to discourage you, yet I thought it was important to let you be aware that there's another dynamic at play here. BlueMoonset (talk) 22:27, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, you're perfectly right. I have a habit of getting rather persnickety if I spend too long playing about. It's rather zen though don't you agree? I shall take a break :) PanydThe muffin is not subtle 22:46, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My big problem when we get this low on approved hooks is that I hate building sets because I feel like I'm eating the seed corn: so many good pictures for lead hooks, and to fill a set I have to overload on them. Drives me nuts. One way or another I'm going to buckle down tonight and finish off a set, unless someone beats me to it. Under a dozen available hooks and there just isn't enough variety to build a balanced set. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:48, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

interview for Slate story?

[edit]

Hi Panyd,

I'm covering the Gibraltarpedia/Wikimedia UK story for Slate Magazine and I was hoping to ask you a few questions for an article we'd like to run soon. Would you mind answering five questions about your involvement with the controversy? Perhaps we could get in touch over email. Or, if you'd rather just respond here, that's fine, too.

1.) How and when did you first discover Bamkin's promotion of Gibraltar through the DYK feature?

2.) How did you uncover his Gibraltar PR connections?

3.) What did you do to bring this to the attention of the Wikipedia community?

4.) How do you think Wikipedia should proceed from here?

5.) What is your opinion on paid PR consultants using Wikipedia to promote their clients?

Thanks so much!

You don't appear to have an email address associated with your account. PanydThe muffin is not subtle 10:52, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm so sorry, I only created an account to research this story and hadn't confirmed my email address (the email got caught in junkmail). It should show now Mstern549 (talk) 12:21, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Document of Identify (Australia)

[edit]

Hi Panyd. At 17:59 on 9 August 2012 you deleted the page Document of Identity (Australia) with the following explanation: "A10: Recently created article that duplicates an existing topic, Australian Document of Identity"

The article Document of Identity (Australia) was not a recently created article. In fact I created it in 2005, six years before Australian Document of Identity.

Furthermore the title Document of Identity (Australia) is more consistent with Wikipedia usage since the document is simply called a Document of Identity in Australia.

I propose the following actions be undertaken:

  1. Undelete Document of Identify (Australia)
  2. Replace the contents with the current contents of Australian Document of Identify since this is a merger of both articles now.
  3. Make Australian Document of Identify a redirect to Document of Identify (Australia).

This will allow for the retention of the page history of a seven year old article.

Once this is done I will make a Document of Identify disambiguation page instead of having it point to Hong Kong Document of Identity for Visa Purposes as it does now.

I hope that makes sense. Cheers, Robert Brockway (talk) 05:39, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
