HagermanBot replacement

Are you still working on the HagermanBot replacement? Just wondering how the progress is going, since you haven't User talk:OverlordQBot/Dev or the brfa in a while. --Android Mouse 04:00, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Yea, just have to figure how to submit the edit page to WP and it'll be done. Got busy with some RL things. 05:05, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh, ok. I believe the only POST fields that are required are wpStarttime, wpEdittime, wpEditToken, wpSummary, and wpTextbox1. Regards --Android Mouse 05:26, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Looks like another bot aimed to perform this task has been written. Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/SineBot. Just thought I'd let you know. --Android Mouse 06:44, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Sandbox

Your bot is erasing the Sandbox almost instantaneously. The Sandbox is for experimentation, and it's impossible to do that when your bot is erasing everything before changes and corrections can be made. How about lightening up a bit. After all, its just the Sandbox! StudierMalMarburg 17:31, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

It resets the sandbox after 30 minutes, or when the header is vandalized. If the header isn't vandalized it will not replace the content. Looking at the revisions now it looks like theres a gremlin somewhere in the code. Thx for the heads up. Q T C 22:11, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
I have also noticed the bot interfering in my edits on WP:Sandbox. A workaround is to go back in history to your edit that you wish to revise and hit the edit link at the top of the page (or to a diff that includes such an edit and click the edit link by the edit summary for that edit) Also, I would be interested in writing a bot / helping out with bot requests (or at least playing with a bot framework). Do you make your bot's code available or would you let me see it? Jeremyb 23:59, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
If you could provide a link to the diff, it'd be appreciated so I could see exactly what was replaced. As for bots, WP:BOT is a good place to start Q T C 00:02, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Is there a bot to CSD or delete one line new pages

Hi

I see you are checking new pages also.....

Isn't it relatively easy to set up a bot to tag, or even better, delete these one line "Joe Blow is the greatest guy in the world" kinda new entries, rather than editors WP:CSD tagging them for later removal? It looks line all, or almost all, the new entries that have very small character counts are garbage.

Just asking....  :)

Pete —Preceding unsigned comment added by Becksguy (talkcontribs)

Only admins can delete pages, all editors can do is tag them for the admins to delete. Q T C 03:11, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Jhene Aiko

Jhene Aiko, which you have been actively editing over the past few days, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that Jhene Aiko satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jhene Aiko and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Jhene Aiko during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. --HAL2008talk 09:50, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks for the notification. A couple of things-

  • Richard "Ricky" Arnold is not my article. Just part of a disambiguation. I moved it because there are four Richard Arnold articles (that I've found so far) on Wikipedia of similar notability.
  • The article (originally located at Richard Arnold, is property of the US Government, and not subject to copyright vio

Thanks for being vigilant, just make sure to read what you're tagging next time before you apply any templates. Take care! Mrprada911 07:59, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I did read it, I just didn't know Govt sources were exempt from copyvio Q T C 08:01, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Sure, no problem. I once CfD'd an article on General Joshua Sill that was deleted, and it never should have been. Check out Work of the United States Government, and Template:PD-Usgov (this particular article would fall under Template:PD-USGov-NASA). There is also an article that posts guidelines on copying official bios (which online applies to the Federal Gov't, most state stuff is copyrighted). However I never copy articles from Government websites, so I don't recall its name. Take care, and thanks for your vandal vigilence! Mrprada911 08:07, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

WP:COPYVIO/Public Domain on U.S. Govt works

Ah yes, see also Public_domain#U.S._government_works. There is yet another article which has specific templates for direct copies from U.S. Gov't websites (which I'll be damned if I can find, lists of templates are a rare commodity), much in the way that polbot utilizes the CongBio template to directly translate biographies of Congressmen. I'm no copyright lawyer but that is the best example I can think of. Take care! Mrprada911 08:13, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Do you really think that Lizzie Grubman is notable? If so, please explain why (apart from committing a felony, which is not notable in and of itself). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.21.115.158 (talkcontribs)

I was not asserting that she is notable, the proper procedure if you think something fails Notability is to put the page up for either Speedy if it's blatant, or put it up for AfD. Blanking the page is not a valid method and is vandalism. As such, I reverted the vandalism. Q T C 09:11, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Why did you redirect Paul Dobberstein to Dobberstein? It looks like a new contributor who probably doesn't understand wikipedia policy/guidelines named the article wrong. Now I can't fix the problem by reversing the direction of the redirect. Royalbroil 03:33, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

In cases like this, with a minimal edit history it's pretty easy to just move and redirect, things with longer edit histories take a little more attention. Q T C 06:09, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I am inquiring about an edit you made to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_Commander regarding it not being a game manual. 31 December

Thanks a lot for sorting those articles. There aren't as many results as I thought there were going to be, but that can only be a good thing. Cheers! Miremare 17:35, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Oh, one other thing, would it be possible for you to repeat the task very occasionally? Say in six months? The problem with these articles is that they're mostly older games whose precise release dates aren't known, so we're likely to keep getting a modest amount of them as new articles on old games are created. Thanks, Miremare 17:39, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
So Just check new articles? Wouldn't be too hard. Q T C 01:23, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
I was about to reply with a "yes, just new articles", but thinking about it, these dates are sourced from respectable gaming websites (who simply don't know the exact date, so plump for the first or last day of the year) so it's possible they may get re-introduced (in good faith) into old articles the future! So if you don't mind doing a full sweep each time that'd be great. If it's too much bother (I don't know how much of your time or resources this task took up, as I'm blissfully unaware about how bots work! But I can certainly understand any reluctance, especially for so few results), I can always just put in another bot request some time in the future. Thanks again, Miremare 18:29, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
Nah, it can be done, it just takes a long time to process all the pages. Q T C 04:56, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
OK then, cheers. I'll drop by in six months' time to remind you! Thanks, Miremare 19:42, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

No worries :) Q T C 21:11, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Why did you approve this bot? There's absolutely no point to it. All it does is spew talk page templates. The discussion was open far too shortly for anyone to really be able to come in and comment on it. Bot discussions aren't just about the technical aspects of whether it can complete the task without malfunctioning, they're also about whether the task is appropriate at all. --Cyde Weys 22:12, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

It was my understanding that the trial period was not approved until these matters were thought to have been throughly addressed. And the trial phase was for analyzing the bots actual behavior itself. Since, as you've pointed out, that is not the case, I stand corrected. Q T C 22:25, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
If what you say truly is the 'policy' then Bot Policy is seriously flawed as the 'Trial Period' would serve absolutely no point. The 'worthiness' of the bot should be established before a trial is approved, otherwise it's just wasting everybody's time. Q T C 22:43, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Lets break down WP:BOT.
Prior to use, bots must be approved at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval. Check
State there precisely what the bot will do, observe and participate in the discussion, and await authorization from someone in the approvals group. Approval may take up to one week. After approval you may run the bot for a short period so it can be monitored. I took this to mean the approval that User:Mets501 gave to run the trial
After the trial the bot will be evaluated by someone in the approvals group and you may ask that the user be marked as a bot by a bureaucrat. Which I did.
So the policy could use a better rewording to help clarify to all parties involved. Q T C 22:50, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

No point?

  1. Most projects have people that look for articles that are connected to their project via these templates. Not necessarily going to the multiple stub (& recursed) categories.
  2. Projects also have "task forces" that deal specifically with stub classes and evaluation of articles. Without an initial tagging of the article "class=stub", they're not aware that the article needs their attention.
  3. Projects also have "task forces" that deal specifically with articles that are not rated via importance. If there's no "importance=<null>", the articles are not brought to their attention.
  4. Once an article is marked with a stub, theoretically it should be also be marked for attention by the appropriate project. Why should a person have to do this manually? I've been doing this by hand and it does get extremely tedious.
  5. Also acts as a method of cross checking for inappropriate stubs. If an article uses a stub inappropriately (i.e. bio-stub on a music article); once it's brought to the appropriate project's attention via this bot, the obviously incorrect stub could be corrected. How likely is it that this would happen otherwise? I've caught multiple instances of this in Songs and Films, specifically because I do generic stub patrol in both of them.
  6. Many article creators do know that there are stubs or categories that are appropriate to the article, but are unaware of what project would be connected to it. This bot watches the categories and puts the article in contact with the appropriate project.

So, could you tell me exactly what "no point" specifically you're referring to?SkierRMH 00:00, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Intro resetting

Hi. I was wondering if you could make OverlordQBot a bit more aggressive at resetting the Wikipedia:Introduction page? It was blank for almost an hour yesterday. Also the intro template was recently changed to instead direct users to the actual sandbox, so there are far fewer edits being done there now.

Secondly, could the bot also reset the talkpage (Wikipedia talk:Introduction), as that shouldn't ever need changing from its current state. (I'm not 100% positive about this second request, possibly you can advise something better?)

Much thanks. :) --Quiddity 17:46, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I wasn't sure what was going on, so started a thread at Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard#Critical - intro and sandbox bot missing to request help/input. (Sorry, I should've notified you yesterday, but was weekend-distracted ;) --Quiddity 17:27, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
  • I was wondering if you could give that Bot owners' noticeboard thread an update on what the situation is currently? Why had OverlordQBot stopped editing, and is it back "permanently" now? I'm not really going to be comfortable (enough to take the intro off my watchlist) until we have a fully-reliable/stable/persistent system in place. Thanks :) --Quiddity 21:43, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:The Dresden Files (TV series) episodes, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:The Dresden Files (TV series) episodes has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:The Dresden Files (TV series) episodes, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Either way, it looks as if I bypassed your bot because I made an edit on the exact time it reverted the previous edit. I would venture to say that the bot probally assumed that my edit was it's own and ignored it. You could probally fix this by having the bot check if an edit was made after it reverts the sandbox.

Also, although immediate action sounds good on paper, it is very bad when applied. A five second delay between checking and reverting would make it much harder to beat the bot. As a quick refrence to the history will tell you, I quickly reverted what yourbot reverted... if there was a delay, it'd be much harder to hit that exact millisecond that causes the bot to malfunction.

It's you're decision wiether or not to take my advice. Personally, I found your bot more of a challange to bypass, rather than trying to vandalize wikipedia... of course, upon succeeding a few times, boredom insued.

And yes, your bot is still quite annoying... sure, the header should be put back afterwards... but the heading is often more of an annoyance than anything. Not only does the heading detract from the "focus" of what a person is "trying" to do, but because of its size, a person needs to scroll down to see the changes that that person makes.

Either way...

Looking at the history I don't see where you beat the bot anywhere that it didn't immediately go back and fix again. Q T C 05:30, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Writing a Bot Script

I would like a bot script written for me, as you said that you could help with that. I would like the script to :

  1. Tag pages with a WikiProject tag;
  2. Check through a users contributions back for 31 days and see if their username is on the history pages of the pages listed on this page, and move their name from "Active" to "Inactive", or vice versa.
It would be great if you could do this for me, and I would be eternally grateful. Dreamy § 21:30, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Theta Tau revert

The previous edit had listed the University of Illinois as Kappa chapter. However, the chapter is still inactive until it is reinstalled. Whenever the University of Illinois colony gets installed, they will be installed as Kappa chapter.

Short answer: there is no active Kappa chapter until they're installed. ClarkBHM (talk) 02:06, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Well the edit you reverted (mine) didn't put Kappa into the active list, it was already there, I simply moved it so it'd fit in the Greek alphabet. Q T C 07:35, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Instantaneous sandbox resets

The bot is resetting the sandbox far more often than once every 12 hours, it is resetting it immediately, within seconds, before I can even see my own changes. Why is this? -Mike Payne (T • C) 02:06, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Dont remove the header, problem solved. Q T C 16:41, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

The bot's user page also appears to be wrong. It says it resets Wikipedia:Sandbox every 6 hours (despite it saying 12 hours on the sandbox page), and Wikipedia:Introduction every 30 minutes. The bot's contributions show that it is the other way round. --Snigbrook (talk) 14:07, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Quick question about KSW

Hi--I see you reverted my change to KSW. (I'd made it a disambiguation page, you changed it back to a redirect to The King's School, Worcester.)

You marked it as a "Rv: redlink disambig." I'm guessing that the issue here is that there were only two links on the page as I'd left it, and one of the two is to a page that doesn't yet exist (the redlink to Keeping Scientoogy Working)--is that it?

If so--would it be appropriate for me to first create the page for the book Keeping Scientology Working, then turn KSW into a disambiguation page listing those two options? Or is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks much for your help! -- Narsil (talk) 03:17, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Pretty much, disambig is used when more a term can coincide with more then one article, but if the other article doesn't exist, there's not much of a point of giving them the choice between something that doesn't exist and the original target of the redirect. Q T C 03:20, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Okay, thanks! My rationale was that people would come to WP and say, "Hey, what does KSW mean, anyway?" (there's a viral Tom Cruise video where he talks a lot about studying KSW), and the page wouldn't help them at all. I figured even a DAB page with a red link would tell them more than they'd known before. But I can easily create a stub article (at least) for Keeping Scientology Working.
Thanks again for your help! -- Narsil (talk) 03:26, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Of course that's my interpretation and opinion and I could and may very well be wrong :) Q T C 03:27, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Research on the RFA process

Hello, I am an anthropology student researching the Wikipedia Requests for adminship procedure. As you are currently going through this process, I was wondering if you would be willing to answer a few quick questions.

  • Do you believe that the current RFA process is an effective way of selecting admins?
  • Do you notice a difference between users who are nominated vs selfnoms?
  • Is a week an appropriate length for process? Should it perhaps be longer or shorter?
  • Do you think the user's status in the community changes while the user is undergoing the RFA process? How about after the RFA process is over?

If you are willing, please leave your answers on my talk page or e-mail them to me.

This research will not be published academically, as this research is primarily to demonstrate the feasibility of doing online ethnography in online only communities such as Wikipedia, though I intend to make my findings available on Wiki. Your name will not be associated with any information you provide in any published work. If you have any questions please let me know. Thank you. --Cspurrier (talk) 18:36, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

G'day Overlord...

and thanks heaps for leaping into action a few weeks ago, when we discussed some research ideas, and you immediately built a 'diff grabber' - which would be one of the core functions of a very useful bot.

I've finally found the time to sketch down a few more of these ideas, and will be chipping away at them in the next little while - you can see what I've written so far here - and I wonder if you could drop the link to your demo bot on the talk page, or here? At some point, at your convenience, it would be great to touch base about building a few more functions into the bot, which I think could be really helpful with this stuff....

cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 02:00, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Well I recently got a toolserver account so I should be able to make it a bit more efficient. Needs some work though Q T C 02:06, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
that's fantastic! - there's no rush, and ultimately, I think for my suggested process to work smoothly, the bot could be given more work to do organising the data etc. - p'raps we could touch base early next week sometime for a chat about it? - or just take a look at the notes I've made thus far - either ways, your help is appreciated! - cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 02:52, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
