- It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
- If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
- Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
- When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.

- Hey, so I added the changes to the Ernie Wilkin's page and Richard Davis the musician. Just, so that Jalen Barks (User:JalenBarks) to delete all my work! Like I found what he did to be extensive, like what should I do? Can you please help me. I just want to have the information I created for those two artists remain on Wikipedia and I'll make sure to get out of everyones hair. Just trying to do some positive and get this school assignment over. I didn't copyright and every time I did use something from a certain source I made sure to cite. OscarCuevas2002 (talk) 13:06, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- I can't easily help you. Jalen Banks ran a copyright violation checker and was certain that you had breached another person's copyright. This is something you need to have a conversation with them about. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 13:09, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello OscarCuevas2002! Your additions to Draft:Richard Davis have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, it's important to understand and adhere to guidelines about using information from sources to prevent copyright and plagiarism issues. Here are the key points:
- Limited quotation: You may only copy or translate a small portion of a source. Any direct quotations must be enclosed in double quotation marks (") and properly cited using an inline citation. More information is available on the non-free content page. To learn how to cite a source, see Help:Referencing for beginners.
- Paraphrasing: Beyond limited quotations, you are required to put all information in your own words. Following the source's wording too closely can lead to copyright issues and is not permitted; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when paraphrasing, you must still cite your sources as appropriate.
- Image use guidelines: In most scenarios, only freely licensed or public domain images may be used and these should be uploaded to our sister project, Wikimedia Commons. In some scenarios, non-freely copyrighted content can be used if they meet all ten of our non-free content criteria; Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide may help with determining a file's eligibility.
- Copyrighted material donation: If you hold the copyright to the content you want to copy, or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license the text for publication here. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Copying and translation within Wikipedia: Wikipedia articles can be copied or translated, however they must have proper attribution in accordance with Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. For translation, see Help:Translation § License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Persistent failure to comply may result in being blocked from editing. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. Jalen Barks (Woof) 04:07, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- @JalenBarks I think you may need to explain this to the editor again. They appear to interpret the copyright breach as "they have or have not copyrighted something themselves" which is an unusual confusion. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 13:11, 13 November 2024 (UTC)

- Bro, why are you deleting all my work??!! Why are you under the impression that I copyrighted?? Please explain how you delete my work that is actually longer than the articles themselves and every time I do use a source I take appropriate action in citing my source. Look this is my first time on Wiki and I'm just trying to complete a hw assignment can you please revert my changes or at least make it so you don't delete everything! Like come onnnn OscarCuevas2002 (talk) 13:01, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- I'm going to have a solid try to explain this to you.
- If you copy large portions of text, even with the source cited, from a document, news article, book, or other item into an article on Wikipedia then that is a breach of copyright.
- There are exceptions, including, but not limited to:
- The copyright of the elements you copy and paste has expired
- There is a published licence at the source that expressly allows onward use (what I have described above is 'onward use')
- You are the copyright owner yourself (though you may have to prove that via WP:VRT
- some other technical reason
- At Wikipedia we go to a great deal of effort to protect the copyright of other parties. That means we remove, whenever we find it, material that has been copied into article and is, in our view, a breach of copyright.
- ---------
- Now, let's move to material that you create yourself, in your own words. When you create that it is your copyright. By adding it to Wikipedia you grant a licence to Wikipedia for onward use. I am doing that with this reply to you. My words are my copyright; I own the copyright to them. I am using a "Rely" mechanism and it says "By clicking "Reply", you agree to our Terms of Use and agree to irrevocably release your text under the CC BY-SA 4.0 License and GFDL. You agree that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient attribution under the Creative Commons license." to the left of the reply button
- This licence means that anyone may use my words under the terms of the licence I have granted. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 13:26, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
Are you engaged in an education project on Wikipedia?
[edit]Hello, OscarCuevas2002. Your recent edits indicate that you may be engaged in an education project that may not be known to other editors. This may have an indirect impact on how your contributions are being assessed by your tutor. If you are involved with an education project, please ask your tutor to contact the Wiki Education Foundation for guidance. Thanks. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 13:32, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
That, in the paragraph above, is a standard message I leave to students who may be struggling with an education assignment that requires them to publish work on Wikipedia. It is an almost impossible assignment, and your tutor needs to be made aware of this. You use the word "school" and that suggests to me as aUK editor that you may be in the age range approx 14-18. In other education systems that may mean anywhere approx 14-25.
At the higher ages one might expect to be able to navigate the complexities here, at the lower ages, not so easily. Please show this to your tutor and ask them to become more familiar with the issues here, for students, if they are not aware already 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 13:32, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- I appreciate your comment. For clarification I'm a 22 year old student at a university institution out here in the United States. What I don't understand is why all my work was deleted, if there was a copyright issue then why didn't he just delete the work that referenced that source. I used other sources in both my writings and inserted my own language. Again I'm wondering like if you can just revert all the changes he made, because what he did was two extreme. Like is there some kind of person I can report this behavior to, so I can challenge what he did? Again not trying to cause trouble or be like a Karen. Just please let me know. Thanks again for ur help OscarCuevas2002 (talk) 14:14, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- You need to ask the person who performed the deletion. There is no hierarchy here so we take it up with those who acted. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 16:40, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- I'd like to clarify what Timtrent is talking about on who you should go to in regards to your content's removal. Yes, I did revert on the basis of a Wikipedia-approved tool detecting that you had directly copied from sources (specifically these two), however, you will want to talk to both @Rsjaffe and Nthep, who can advise you further on what you can do. If you ask me, I would say to rewrite your intended additions in a way that doesn't closely resemble the text in those 2 sources I linked. Jalen Barks (Woof) 17:08, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- I didn't delete the edits but I did hide them, as they were definite copyright violations. To see how to properly rewrite information from sources, see WP:FIXCLOSEPARA. Read it carefully and follow those. Never copy text, even if you're thinking of rewriting it. It must always be in your own words. — rsjaffe 🗣️ 17:13, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- One thing which is easy to ask for, but impossible for anyone to do, is to restore copyright text to anywhere at all. Were anyone to do so they would be themselves in breach of copyright.
- Your best option is to use your own words, but please be very careful because close paraphrasing is also breach of copyright. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 17:21, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
