Thanks for all of your background, low-profile edits that no one else bothers to do. Editors like you, doing gnome-y tasks, are the lifeblood of Wikipedia- without you, Wikipedia would be a giant mess. Keep up the good work! Cheers, --L235 (talk) Ping when replying 19:18, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
Thank you! OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 04:20, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

I just noticed how big Category:CS1 errors: missing author or editor. Could you teach me how to help clear it? (And tell me what exactly it means? :P) Cheers! --L235 (talk) Ping when replying 19:21, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

They leave with |first and they don't add |last, when they are writing the author's name. Sometimes they also use |first= parameter where we should use |work= parameter. You have to Ctrl+F and find where they have used "first=", and haven't inserted "last=", if it is the name of a person it can be replaced with |author=[1] or you can also insert |last=[2], you can insert |work=[3] if it is a website or company. Some have used |editor1-first= and forgot to add |editor1-last=[4] OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 04:16, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Years in Iran

I've noticed that you've been creating articles about various years in Iran. I'm wondering, since they are without any content, why you did not first create them as a draft page or a user sub-page, add content to each, before then publishing them as articles? SecretName101 (talk) 07:21, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

@SecretName101: As long as it speaks enough about the scope of the content, it is fair to create. Although it can be controversial if the subject is clearly non-notable, here the subject is notable enough to have its article. I will probably expand each under 1 week. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 07:24, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for clarifying. Clearly you have an incredibly vast Wikipedia editing experience. I was just hoping for clarification so that I could have a better understanding of what you were doing. Thank you for responding, and happy belated New Year. SecretName101 (talk) 07:27, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Done. Thanks for the corrections. -- llywrch (talk) 06:44, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Humbug, OccultZone. You should rather have asked why Kww reverted the edits. That the whole "famously" thing is not neutral (hence the IP's summary, "rm pov") is obvious, and that the material isn't properly verified is also obvious, if only because that particular link is dead--besides, a NPS website wouldn't be a very good site to source that kind of info about a historical person from. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 05:24, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

@Drmies: It may have been inserted because that was his main and most notable achievement. Yes a NPS website is not a reliable source for this sort of knowledge, that's why I didn't bothered to search for archives. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 05:40, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
I did, but oddly enough the main page's link, which was alive, was to the exact same place--it wasn't just a matter of a page having been moved. Drmies (talk) 05:46, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Re:Shumye

Hi Angela,

I couldn't understand why you deleted the piece I put out on the background of Fitawrari Shumye, second in command of Ras Gugesa Welle's Army in the battle of Anchim. I just used the hyperlink provided to Fitawrari Shumye, on the main article to provide more information on the background of the man. I have no intention of promoting or aggrandizing anyone here as you seem to suspect (least, people who are already dead long time a go), except trying to provide a piece of information that could fill the gap in a person's biography. Now, you may ask how do I know more about this person? This is fair question. I'm related to Fitawrari Shumye, and my dad grew up in his home after losing his dad (my grandfather) at a young age. In other words, my grandfather, Abegaz Gunagul, is the brother of Fitawrari Shumye Gunagul and the family knows a lot about the biography of the two brothers and tyhe battle of Anchim, March 1930. The battle of Anchim where Fitawrari Shumye is mentioned is already documented in several publications, so I don’t have any new thing to add here. I mentioned the peasant protest that took place in the mid 1930’s in Northern Ethiopia, where Fitawrari Shumye’s brother (my grandfather), was the leader of the protest, just for additional information for the benefit of readers. Regarding this particular peasant protest, you can refer to a BA thesis “System of Land Tenure and Peasant Protest in Gubalfto Wereda, 1984, Addis Ababa University, written by a researcher called, "Molla Tikuye” This paper is mentioned in several other studies on the web, but there is no scanned copy of it on the Internet. However, you can find the hard copy at Kennedy Library, Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. If you think this is not relevant for my piece on Shumye, you can take it out. I don’t mind.

Thank you, Getachew Dessiye, Edmonton, Canada

Here is a revised version of my piece and I kindly ask you to put it back on the hype link to Shumye:

Fitawrari Shumye Guangul hails from North Wello-Yeju district. He is one of the sons of Guangul Aleye, a known nobility in Yeju district. As a man who loved adventure and hunting, he traveled to the nearest region Debretabor-Gonder to become a trusted leader and commander of Ras Gugesa Welle's Army of 35,000. . Fitawrari Shumye was known for his accurate shooting skills and extraordinary bravery in battle, winning the commander’s post on Ras Gugsa Welle’s Army. . Older people in Debretabor and Yeju narrate that he fought on to the last bullet in the battle of Anchim, even after the death of his master Ras Gugsa, before he was captured by the Imperial Army. The Emperor jailed Fitawrari Shumye for nearly 6 years for the heavy casualties the Imperial Army suffered in the battle. After his release from jail, Fitawrari Shumye letter fought against the Italian occupation of Ethiopia, and was involved in a pitch battle against General Nazi of the Italian Army in Gonder area in 1940-41. General Nazi was later defeated and captured. One of Fitawrari Shumye Guangul’s brothers, Abegaz Guangul, was also a peasant rebellion leader in North Wello Yeju district in the mid 1930s. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Getachewde1 (talkcontribs) 22:15, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

AWB

I see you are an avid user of AWB. I'm rather new to it, still finding the ropes. I noticed you semi-automatically created talk pages for articles using awb and adding wikiproject tags to it.like this. Could you guide me how to do that? I would really like to make talk pages to WP:INDIA articles and assess them. Cheers, ƬheStrikeΣagle 09:16, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

That is not AWB. Every edit that is done with AWB is tagged with "using AWB", and it is apparent in the edit summary. Magioladitis knows better about tagging wikiprojects with AWB. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 09:33, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Archive URLs

I noticed you removed an archive URL from a reference with the edit summary of 'working link'; I'm sorry but I have just re-instated it - whenever I add a website as a ref I usually archive it at the same time so, if it should stop working at a later date, the archive is already in place. Perhaps I'm doing it incorrectly though? Has someone indicated that they should be removed? Thank you for your note a few days ago on my talk page, it was very much appreciated. SagaciousPhil - Chat 10:30, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on 1997 in North Korea requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. I don't see the point in these empty year articles, a lot of which are currently in Category:Stubs. I've enquired at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Years#Empty_years whether the Years WikiProject has a policy on creating them. It seems to me that if there is no content a reader is better served by a red link. PamD 12:19, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
@PamD: I appreciate that you brought it to my attention. My main purpose behind creating these kinds of articles was to rescue the years template, that were to be deleted just because they had "many redlinks", I believe that under 3-4 days, each of these articles will have good amount of content. You can check 1997 in North Korea again. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 13:01, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Your assistance please

Hi OccultZone,

thanks for your support on the Talk:Dog page and I agree with you. (You may note that you have taught me something about Wikipedia Policy!) That person is about to receive so many replies from editors with so many different ideas that there will be no consensus, and so nothing will change apart from their level of frustration.

I note that by the timing of our responses that we may be working in closely related time zones, I am in Australia, and I assume that you are close by in East Asia. Please forgive me if I am mistaken. If so, you or one of your contacts may be able to assist me. I have done a lot of work updating the Origin of the domestic dog page, and have now but one citation to track down and add that I have spent months trying to find. I cannot find it online with Google, and it may only appear written in Chinese and is possibly online in China somewhere. The venerated biologist Pei Wenzhong wrote something profound back in 1934, but I am unwilling to cite it unless I have read it's content. It's citation is:

Pei, W. C. 1934. The carnivora from locality 1 of Choukoutien. Palaeontologia Sinica, Series C, vol. 8, Fascicle 1, Geological Survey of China, Bejing

(You taught me something about coloured signatures as well!) William Harristalk • 23:43, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

You are always welcome! I cannot find that source really, but I will try to. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 07:53, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
Many thanks - it is worth a try. Volume 8 is a short volume (45 pages) from a collection of volumes which when placed together forms a book. If we cannot find it then I will see if any library in Australia has a copy of the book, it will not be easy due to its great age. I am hopeful that the volumes might be available online as separate PDF documents somewhere as a tribute to the scholar. I understand that he said in that volume 80 years ago, based on skull-shape and his wise experience, that the dog is the descendant of a now-extinct wolf! Regards, William Harristalk • 09:36, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
Problem solved! Pei is only available in the West from the Smithsonian Institute, Harvard University and the University of Bavaria. I went to the University of Adelaide Library today and found citations from 2 separate researchers who cite Pei to the page number saying the same things. Therefore, I will be happy to use those as a double-citation for Pei. Next steps: create a page about Pei's extinct Chinese wolf, update the broken links on the Pei Wenzhong page out of respect and add the link to his new wolf page, then cite he and the wolf on the Origin of the domestic dog page. Thanks for trying! Regards, William Harristalk • 09:10, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Now all done. After including the validated Pei references, I regard the Origin of the domestic dog as complete, at least by me! William Harristalk • 12:43, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Looks satisfactory, good job! OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 16:36, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Pen Spinning

Thanks for clarifying that. Saw that editor had made a number of edits. Pen spinning one in contact juggling is okay though Robynthehode (talk) 07:46, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

George Miller et al.

Collect has deleted the post in the meanwhile, what I referred to was this post by NewYorkBrad. It's in the last two paragraphs, I quote:

  • This may seem an odd way to construct the boxes, but as far I can think of, there is no real alternative. There are some cases where it is obvious which district is the continuation of its predecessor because the territory has not changed materially, and a few districts that have their own institutional histories (the classic example is the "Silk Stocking District" in Manhattan) but in a great number of others a new district is not the indisputable the lineal successor of a predecessor in a territorial sense. Thus, while I haven't reviewed the discussions that must have taken place at Wikiproject Congress, but I am certain the conclusion has been reached that using the district numbers by state is the only practicable alternative. And it is true, if only trivially so, that if one asked the question "who represents the 13th District of New York" in 2012, the answer would have been "Rep. Charles Rangel," and if one asks the same question in 2014, the answer is "Rep. Michael Grimm." So the succession boxes convey accurate information, at least in that narrow sense.
  • Perhaps the answer is some sort of a footnote or qualifier, but this should be done on some sort of systematic basis, if it can be done at all. In the meantime, both of you need to turn the rhetoric down a bunch of notches. This is a technical issue about successful boxes, and while I strongly endorse Collect's call for accuracy in BLPs, I do not perceive this as a BLP issue. Getting BLPs right is critical, but raising every content dispute in a BLP article to the level of a BLP violation will have the unfortunate effect of diluting the attention that can be given to the truly troublesome violations. I also don't see the need for attacks and counterattacks on this technical point based on which editors might be considered conservative or not.

I suggest all editors cease to edit-war about this. Snow Rise's last post at the recent Binksternet ANI report endorsed that the stable version from before the RfC (as of December 1, 2014) should have been preserved from the beginning. Kraxler (talk) 14:18, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

At the top of your watchlist page, there is a link for 'View and edit watchlist.' This gives you a way to remove items without having to click on every page individually. For more options see Help:Wikipedia: The Missing Manual/Editing, Creating, and Maintaining Articles/Monitoring Changes#Removing Pages from Your Watchlist. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 14:27, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello OccultZone, I noticed that you un-relisted Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dr.Ahmedaalzagtat. I agree that it it probably should be deleted, but there has been limited discussion at the AfD. I know that some AfDs have been closed with only the nominator and one other editor being in agreement. This AfD has had only two editors participating beyond the nominator, and all three primarily point at policy. And only one comment has addressed the absence of references as the basis for not meeting guideline requirements. With all due respect, it seems procedurally inappropriate to both participate in the discussion about deletion, and the decision to close/continue the discussion. It is for these reasons that I am going to again relist, and respectfully request that you allow other editors the opportunity to either participate, or for an admin to skip that and delete. Best,  B E C K Y S A Y L E 02:56, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

@Becky Sayles: I would strongly recommend not to reinstate such moves, especially when they have been reverted under some better reason. It is not as controversial when admin has closed an AfD or relisted, but non-admins should gain consensus before restoring their reverted move. EdJohnston has now deleted the article. Thank you for your support, OccultZone. I believe that you are the only person on Wikipedia who is truly supportive of me at all, very much reflecting an attitude and approach of fairness, neutrality, and professionalism. I appreciate that you are able to perceive these situations, and contribute sensitively and maturely. I have been pushed way over the top with these situations, particularly with doing my best to handle them myself between Softlavender and Ad Orientem. I believe, however, that because I've attempted to reason with them, myself, they view me as weak when I am really the strong one. I have had to be strong when bombarded with such craziness. Obviously, there are many folks out there who believe they can get away with it because they don't have to show their face or put their real name behind their words. Wikipedia truly needs not only better policies to prevent the type of situation that I've endured for these past 6 months now, but also that the policies are enforced. I've observed and experienced inconsistent and biased appraisals of these situations by people who merely view the surface issues rather than those that extend much deeper. I am relieved to say, however, that you are one who is dependable - that is much appreciated. Thank you, again, Daniellagreen (talk) (cont) 02:55, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello There. I have reverted your edit to Mamta Kulkarni as it was sourced with an unreliable source. A facebook page is not a reliable source. If you have any questions please contact me! TheMagikCow (talk) 08:37, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

@TheMagikCow: It is not a matter that how unreliable the source is. This is different than what you are thinking, since it was written by oneself it is reliable for something that requires self admission. That Facebook post was made on her official channel. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 10:08, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
OccultZone, you are correct. However, there is one problem, the link is dead. Unless it is archived somewhere, a dead link is as a good as no link, thus it becomes unsourced. Bgwhite (talk) 10:12, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
WP:DEADLINK affirms that there is basically no need that a link has to be live. I had checked before that it is dead, yes we have got a archived URL.[6] OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 10:16, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
DEADLINK only talks about repairing a dead link. Also, it is not a MOS page, policy or guideline, just a how-to page. See the MOS page WP:DEADREF, item #5. It says to remove the material from a dead link if nothing can be found. Good, you found an archive. Adding back that she is Hindu if the archive says she is (I didn't read the Facebook post... that is one loooooong post) and add the archive as a ref. Bgwhite (talk) 10:32, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
Hmmm, it appears, she converted to Islam. I think you need to do more research into this. Bgwhite (talk) 10:40, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
Yes its true, whenever a deadlink has been challenged it should be replaced with a working one. These few sources are speaking about a rumor, none of these claims appears to have been confirmed by her, to be correct. Including other claims such as she got married or her supposed husband got converted. On her Facebook post she had denied any of these claims, it reads "..neither i am still married to anyone.Second about me being married to Vicki Goswami/ and him converting into Muslim so do i become too .First i am still Hindu neither Vicki Goswami has converted to Muslim". Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for helpful automated edits. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Lixxx235 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate OccultZone as Editor of the Week for their numerous edits in gnome-y, background maintenance edits. With over 167.000 edits in less than a year and a half, more than half of which are in article-space, OccultZone is one of Wikipedia's most prolific editors. S/he often sits down and, for hours on end, makes large batches of edits at a time in background maintenance areas that most editors would not have the patience to try. In the last week alone, OccultZone has rated over 600 articles and shaved off more than 400 errors in Category:CS1 errors: missing author or editor. OccultZone is one of Wikipedia's most dedicated and prized editors.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Hi OccultZone. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Which is where you come in :) You are a highly active Wikipedian (83rd), and you were active back during the January 2012 discussion/voting for the SOPA, yet you did not chose to participate in said vote. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why was that so? For your convenience, I prepared a short survey at meta, which should not take more than a minute of your time. I would dearly appreciate you taking this minute; not only as a Wikipedia researcher but as a fellow content creator and concerned member of the community (I believe your answers may help us eventually improve our policies and thus, the project's governance). PS. If you chose to reply here (on your userpage), please WP:ECHO me. Thank you! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:04, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello

I have just finished contributing to an article and there was a notification saying I "was patrolled by" You. Good to see that! Being a new editor on Wikipedia, I would be glad to have any inputs from you regarding my contributions. Please point out the errors, if there are any! Thank You. Anand2202 (talk) 14:34, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

@Anand2202: You had edited Universe, I have that article on my watchlist. I had checked your userpage, it was recently created by you and I had reviewed it. Any newly created page would need to be reviewed, unless the page creator has permissions like WP:ADMIN or WP:Autopatrolled. Review is important for assuring that page is not a attack page, violation of copyrights, etc. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 14:41, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
@OccultZone: Yes, After watching a documentary I checked out the Wikipedia article and found that the contributed info was missing. So I made an effort to put the relevant info out there for everybody. I wrote that piece of info keeping a high school student as the reader in my mind. I used a very simple language so that anyone without the specialized education in science would understand it. Was that OK? I hope the NPOV was followed strictly!! And, by the way, I do appreciate your effort in making Wikipedia a better place! Anand2202 (talk) 14:57, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Can be merged for now, to the main article. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 09:20, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Template

I need help on how to create a separate template as Tempalte:Villages in X district. Can I create such thing as there are many villages for Template:Guntur district and many such districts. If yes then what category should I add Category:Villages in X district or Template:Andhra Pradesh district templates.--Vin09 (talk) 07:29, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

You can create such template, although you will have to make sure if your template duplicates any other one or not. There are many categories for these kinds of templates, you may want to check Category:India district templates. If your preferred category has no existence, you can just let me know here. Thanks OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 07:37, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
No it do not have any duplicate, just needs to separate it from Tempalte:Guntur district and create Template:Villages in Guntur district and add more info to the former.--Vin09 (talk) 07:54, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
Lets see, you can create template on your userspace for now. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 07:58, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
Userspace in the sense? Created here — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vin09 (talkcontribs)
Reviewed. You can move it yourself now, to mainspace. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 09:32, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

as of and update after

Is this correct here? Agarru#Demographics.

But still it is displayed in containing potentially dated statements this place.--Vin09 (talk) 06:43, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

@Vin09: That is due to the maintenance template, {{refimprove}}. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 00:17, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
