Interesting (Blue Banner)

Hi. I thought that you would be interested in the discussion at Image talk:Sc7588935 TN.jpg.

-- TimNelson 12:50, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

As you stated it, no. As you meant it, maybe. I don't think copyright applies here, but some other form of Intellectual Monopoly might.

  • Hopefully we can both agree that neither patents nor trade secrets are relevant
  • I would argue that copyright is not relevant, as I drew the design myself based on a book printed in 18-something (before 1923 anyway)
  • Trademarks/trade dress: This may be relevant. I'd argue, though, that as it's not being used exclusively by the RPCNA (or the RPC denominational group), but by the Steelites as well, that this doesn't apply either. In fact, the one the Steelites use as the blue background on http://www.covenanter.org/ was produced by me for (an older version of) the RPCA website using an outline that is probably identical to the one in the RPCNA banner that appears here on Wikipedia. You'll notice that that outline (and all the ones the RPC tends to use) have 3 spikes at the bottom, whereas the one I drew from the old book has a fringe at the bottom. Therefore the RPCNA one is more similar to the Steelite one than the one that I drew. I'm still unsure where this leaves us legally, but my guess is that we're alright. But assuming we're not, I could probably replace it with one scanned directly from the old book, which should almost certainly be alright.

Hmm :).

-- TimNelson 09:32, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Actually, as the RPCNA banner is pretty much identical to the one used on the Witness (both RPCNA and RPCI), it might be possible to argue copyright on that particular depiction of the blue banner. Or you might be able to call it a trademark in a similar fashion (in spite of its long history). However, if either of those are true, they should be battling the Steelites in order to retain control, otherwise it will become "generic" (or something -- I forget the proper term), and they'll lose the rights -- in other words, fight the little battles, and when the big one comes, it will be little too, because you'll have precedent.
OTOH, the Steelites could try to get it from us as per the Ferguson Bequest case :).
Basically, what I'm arguing is that the RPCNA banner is a much more borderline case than my picture :). And now I've argued both sides :).

afro photo

go on and upload the afro photo, its great!

71.112.6.35 15:11, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

It's not that whites can't have afros, Nyttend, it's that the photos typically illustrate the article. The IP above is absolutely obsessed with me, so they aren't giving particularly good advice to you (every time they log on they do things that relate only to me...it's kind of flattering. But they also use the IP 71.112.7.212 with a lengthy history of contentiousness and being blocked - best to ignore them). Regardless, if you want to write a section about white afros, then try it out and maybe then the photo will work. But right now the article mainly relates to afros as a black hairstyle and Jewfro as it relates to Jews. If the person is Jewish, then it would work really well! --David Shankbone 15:40, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

nyttend, feel free to put your photo up. it's a great pic. mr "bone" above has put another photo there that's he's very protective of, he also seems to think afros only count if the person wearing them is jewish. how crazy is that?! i can help you upload it if you need.

  • Thanks for the note. I like your picture, though - it made me laugh and was good quality. Yeah, I'm not sure what this IP's deal is; I guess she just has a lot of time on her hands and can't seem to get me out of her head. I think there might be some kind of physical and intellectual attraction on her part, and she wants negative attention. Every time she signs on, she tries to get my attention. Poor old girl...must be lonely and bored. You do some great work on here, by the way - I checked out your contributions. Thanks for contributing! --David Shankbone 04:25, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

hey man, no skin off my back if you don't want to upload. i thought you wanted to put it up. 2-1 for might not be the best consensus, but surely its better than 1-2? isn't it strange that it is OK to put a photo up of a jewish person with an afro but if your friend isn't jewish then it it will be stricken? we're talking hairstyles here, not religion of who's wearing them. anyhow, don't be suspicious of IPs. IPs are people too! ;) you might take a look at the current photo on the afro page, i think you'll agree it ain't an afro....not compared to your friends. then again, if you mess with that page this shankbone fellow is going to go out of his way to make you miserable, so maybe its best left alone. 71.112.6.35 04:31, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

hey man, don't really know what your game is, but you were a bit impolite there. i came here to support putting your picture up. i'm sorry if shankbone intimidated you into not putting up your photo because your friend isn't jewish or whatever reason he's using for keeping his photo up there these days, but don't see why you're taking it out and me.

Good catch on Camp Coldwater, when it was first posted I did a google search on some of the sentences but I didn't get that page. I have deleted the copyvio text and will stub the article out more shortly. Thanks. -Ravedave 15:04, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

HBot3

Nyttend, Thank you for calling my username to my attention, and I have already taken action. I do not want to cause any avoidable confusion. I would like to briefly comment on your merging of Mayfield Township with Defunct Townships. The Mayfield Township article was made for the sole purpose of the defunct township, and in hopes for further expansion. None of the information from the Mayfield Township article was carried over into the new article, which was all relevant, and met encyclopedic criteria. Also, this "merge" was done without any discussion. I would like again to thank you for your help, and I understand that your decisions were made in good faith, like a Wikipedian should. Cordially, --HBot3 20:13, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

That's fine, I decided to just include the information from the original article in the new article. --HBow3 10:13, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

CSS and HTML markup

Well, they're only really essential if you create websites for a living! But they can be useful when using Wikipedia, particularly when styling tables and infoboxes, for example. I've got a few minutes to see if I can get your user page sorted out, so I'll have go now. That's easier than explaining CSS and HTML markup. If you're interesting in knowing a bit more, I'll find some of Wikipedia's CSS and HTML-related help pages and provide the links a bit later. Adrian M. H. 14:31, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

That looks a quite a bit better now. If you want to change that layout, but you're not sure how to go about it, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Regards, Adrian M. H. 14:40, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks much! Nyttend 15:21, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Largest city question

Hi Nyttend, I went through and updated all the Ohio county infoboxes recently (added dates, etc. and two sources). In the process I only filled in the largest city field if it was a city other than the county seat. For Greene County I listed Kettering, even though it is in both Montgomery and Greene Counties, as it had the largest population, even though it is mostly in Montgomery Co. (Beavercreek is the biggest city entirely in Greene Co.). An anon editor recently changed the Greene Co. infobox (note the charming edit summary) [1]. Anyway, my question to you is what do you think should be done about largest city? In most cases it is the county seat, so it seems redundant to me to list that twice. At this point I want it to be consistent for all 88 counties, but otherwise don't care too much. Since you seem to be one of the only other people systmatically working on Ohio counties, I wanted your opinion. Thanks, Ruhrfisch 14:43, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

  • I fixed Greene County - the anon took out the equal sign so largest city was not showing up (though Beavercreek was listed in the code). I can see one of two plans: 1) We can ask User:Timneu22 who has been working on the county infoboxes about a "county seat and largest city" line to the template. 2) It might be easier if I just made another pass through and added largest city (already checked them all the last pass). I don't recall too many other counties where the largest city was in multiple counties.

Sorry about Hermitage Township - you can ask an admin to undelete it and paste the info in your talk page or sandbox to recreate the article. I think there is also an undelete appeal process, but forget what it is called. There are a few paper township articles in Pennsylvania (see Augusta Township in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania for one I recall), so it seems notable and should be (re)created. I guess I should have used {{prod}} and not {{db}} - sorry again. Take care, Ruhrfisch 18:51, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

    • Carroll County, Ohio has part of Minerva, which has more total population than the seat (Carrollton). I looked at the census website but could not find pop by county, so I left a footnote in the infobox. What do you think? Ruhrfisch 03:19, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
      • Clermont County, Ohio is even more complicated - two largest cities are split between two or three counties. I listed Amelia as largest, with a note about Loveland and Milford. I will keep looking at the census to see if I can find something. Nothing is ever easy ;-) Ruhrfisch 03:39, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
        • Just as I was despairing about Delaware County (the totals for Columbus, Dublin, and Westerville are all larger than the city of Delaware), you saved me. I will come up with a simpler note based on the OSU web site you found, thanks! Ruhrfisch 03:55, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
          • Milford is larger and I will fix it and then go to bed - does the wording of the note seem OK otherwise? Thanks again, I got through the D's. Ruhrfisch 04:07, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
            • Thanks, glad it is clear. If the seat and largest city are the same I will only link the seat (first mention in infobox). I also fixed Greene Co, since it started all this. Good night and thanks again, Ruhrfisch 04:23, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Largest village

Agreed. I tried it ("Largest village" in the template instead of "Largest city") for Vinton County (diff [2]) and it didn't work. I will ask User:Timneu22 to add the parameter. Largest borough would be useful for Pennsylvania. I might also tell him about not double linking the largest city of it is the same as the seat. I finished my pass through all 88 Ohio counties. My last pass I checked populations, but it is still possible I missed a largest X or two, so if you have any you want to check please do so. Thanks, Ruhrfisch 14:49, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm not vandalizing

How is correcting misinformation wrong. The Eastwood Mall is the biggest Mall in America, then The King of Prussia, then Mall of America. Not that California mall. Just read this article. [3]appropriatusername

Wow. I did not realize Eastwood Mall is now the biggest mall in America, and I'm from that area! In fact, that same mall is the one I would frequent as a teen. I really need to go back home more often... (No point to this commentary, just some random sharing on a wikifriend's page.) -- SwissCelt 16:01, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

County templates (AZ)

Hello, I saw the question you posted up on the Arizona wikiproject regarding county navigational templates in Arizona. I took a look at the ones you made for Yuma and Santa Cruz counties, and I believe they look pretty good. I should point out though that the distinction between a city and a town is fairly marginal and largely historical. The governmental structure of a city is generally more complex than that of a town, but in terms of powers and responsibilities they are functionally identical. Additionally the idea that cities are larger than towns is also largely historical. For example, El Mirage is a city at 22,121 population whereas Gilbert is a town with 173,989 residents. Since the differences between city and town are negligible and largely of historic value only here in Arizona, I'd suggest putting them together (cities/towns) in your templates rather than splitting them up.

You might also want to take in to consideration that there exists some precedent for grouping by population size as well. See, for example, Template:Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Personally I don't like this format - city populations, particularly here in Arizona, tend to grow rapidly and are not good for groupings. I prefer the grouping by city/town or CDP, as you have done, but just figured you might want to take that under consideration. Arkyan • (talk) 18:16, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

The Phoenix template I provided is somewhat ambiguous in terms of what it includes. It seems to include all of the municipalities in Maricopa and Pinal counties, as well as some (but not all) of the CDP's. There is some contention as to how to define the Phoenix Metro Area - whether it is a firm definition from the Census bureau, or based on a more intuitive "what locals consider to be the metro area". Personally I favor using the Census bureau's definition if only for the sake of attribution, butI have yielded to the consensus on this issue :) Anyway hope i've answered your questions. Arkyan • (talk) 19:16, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Done! I added my thoughts to the proposed move. Arkyan • (talk) 23:03, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Excellent job with the county templates. Good work! I wonder if it's possible (and if this is too much work then don't worry about it) to give the templates a hide/show feature? I know it's an extreme example but Apache Junction, Arizona has a listing in 3 distinct templates and having so many clustered up at the bottom seems to clutter the page some, and the ability to hide the templates might help cure that. But only if it's not too much work :) Again, great job and thanks! Arkyan • (talk) 06:31, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Bellefontaine's GAC

Hey there. I thought I should tip you off on why I nominated Bellefontaine, Ohio for Good Article status. User:Epbr123 assessed the article as "start class", which is the lowest possible assessment for an article that's not a stub. This editor also did so without leaving any comments, which essentially degrades the article-- how can we improve it if we don't know what to improve? I don't like assessments anyway, but assessments without comments just leave a black mark on the article and devalue the contributions of tireless editors.

So I tried removing the quality part of the assessment for now. He/she reverted my edits twice. Finally, I nominated the article for GA status in the hopes of bringing the quality scale up. It was a desperation move, as I could think of no other way to keep the article from forever being a start class article. This SAME editor failed the GAC, mere minutes after I nominated it. So now not only does the article have an ugly "start class" rating, it has an even uglier failed GA status on it. I'm fed up. I feel as though the article was vandalized by a drive-by editor, and I don't feel that I have any recourses to correct it. -- SwissCelt 13:10, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Aha, I see what you mean. I saw that bit and simply assumed that someone had nominated it for GA and quickly been turned down, with nothing else happening. Nyttend 13:13, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
So what can we do about it? I'm in a cooling off period right now (self-imposed), so I won't do anything today, but I would very much appreciate your advice. -- SwissCelt 13:17, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
Not much of an idea. I usually don't do anything with this kind of ratings (too subjective for me), and my input was just a guess. I suppose the intro could be expanded, and the geography and economy as well. Do you get the Examiner's online edition? There's not that much of economy notes in the Examiner generally. Nyttend 13:20, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
I know the article can be improved, certainly. Hmmm... Maybe I'm just worried too much about it. The whole process just upsets me, as it seems to be an easy way to snipe at other people's work without adding anything constructive. -- SwissCelt 13:32, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
One thing that could help the geography section is a picture and account of Campbell Hill (regardless of whether it comes with an ", Ohio" :-). I hope to go to get a picture sometime this summer.
At any rate, look at other cities. Articles as significant as Carson City, Nevada and Biloxi, Mississippi are rated start-class. Perhaps the cities Wikiproject is just really stringent. Nyttend 13:37, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Nyttend, I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, and I know the external links often need pruning, but I think you're perhaps being over-zealous.

RE: Scioto County

Yeah I've been meaning to take some pictures of Scioto County recently. But have never got the time to do it. Hopefully I can do it this summer before going off to Ohio State in the fall. I also need to refer to some articles in Scioto County. We sort have troubles with political corruption in these parts of my county and needs to be looked at instead of being censored or edited by pessimists. Surely Jimmy can come into the KYOVA region. Your information added to all the townships looks great. Spongefan 20:34, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

You messed up the calendars

When you moved the first day of the week in Template:MonthR, you messed up a lot of calendars (such as Common year starting on Monday). Did you realise this?

Kansas images

As to the ... tons of places with no pictures ...
I live on the Kansas side of KC, the east side of the state ... west side of the city. The origins of humanity is just a history topic to me.
I would be willing to take pictures of various places. Where? What?
I like geography and places too .. I had done the Grinter Place ...
For Kansas counties, I'd do it ... as long as they are not too far away — gas is high and the oil addiction sucks ...
Again ... I'll try to find some that need it ... but ...
Where? What? Tell me ...
Sincerely, J. D. Redding 12:22, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Marysville, Kansas and Black Squirrels

On your edit for Marysville, Kansas I do believe that you are right to move the History section, but I question why the section on "black squirrels" was removed. Other cities and towns in Wikipedia have "town nicknames" listed if there is one, and I don't see why Marysville would be the exception to that.

Please explain.--Paul McDonald 02:05, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Yavapai County, Arizona template

You may want to add these towns and places to your template:

Clemenceau, Arizona (new page), old company town, now part of Cottonwood, Arizona

Rimrock, Arizona (where I live) and McGuireville, Arizona -- unincorporated towns/places in the Lake Montezuma, Arizona CDP

Page Springs, Arizona, uninc. community in the Cornville, Arizona CDP

Cherry, Arizona (new page), ghost town

Cheers, Pete Tillman 08:05, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply (at User talk:Tillman). That all sounds reasonable, especially since old mining towns out West typically had/have many named communities/areas.

Geauga County

I hope you don't mind me asking, but why are you reorganizing the town articles in that way. Many of the sections that you are shortening have incorrect grammar, and if you look at other town articles, you will see that the demographic sections are supposed to be there and in that form. Also, some of your information is incorrect, such as the fact that Bainbridge, Ohio is located inside of Bainbridge Township. They are completely separate places. 71.31.149.98 03:23, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

I'm going to revert your changes, or at least add the demographic sections back, for now. 71.31.149.98 03:24, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I'm going to leave most of your changes intact. However, unless there's a good reason for it, I think that stating that a place is the only town/township/etc. with that name in the state is a bit redundant. 71.31.149.98 03:38, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry about the midunderstanding. I didn't realize that the township articles were different from census-designated areas. 69.40.245.190 02:45, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

The link to the Volapük Vükiped that you've restored points to Sterling, Utah, not to Sterling, Ohio. There is currently no article on Sterling, Ohio, in the Volapük Vükiped. I still need to find time to look at Ohio townships and write Volapük articles for them; that will take quite a while, given my current schedule. In the interest of consistency, I've removed the link again. Please don't restore it, you'd be restoring a wrong link. --Smeira 18:07, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Don't worry, it happens. (The other day I was copying information from an article on a small town in Utah to the Volapük Wikipedia to translate, and by mistake I saved my translation onto the English article (I had both open in parallel windows, they had the same maps...). One and a half minute later another Wikipedian reverted the change and thought I was doing vandalism. I apologized, sighed and went on.) --Smeira 08:49, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

I'm assuming all the same regions as before would be viable, but you might want to double-check... Alai 02:29, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

No, that's what I was suggesting; sorry if I was unclear. I was just listing the by-county numbers for (relative) ease of reference in checking the regions would be viable (i.e., all over 60 articles). However, I would suggest by-county templates, since experience tells us that there's no end to how much this stuff will grow, and because the regions are somewhat vague and mutable, while the counties are much less so. Alai 03:43, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Hardly a lot rarer; there's nearly 800 Ohio-school-stubs now, which more than there were Ohio-geo-stubs until very recently. `And as the above numbers illustrate, some of the individual counties are well on the way to the threshold by themselves. And I'm afraid I don't see the downside to the model I suggested. Alai 04:12, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

It's a good general principle that admittedly does start to seem a little silly in its application in the extreme case, if say Morgan County really only does have one school stub, but for the sake of symmetry it's probably best to create them all on the same pattern, with template scopes corresponding to the permcats. BTW, I think this earlier proposal pretty much covers the formalities. I'll make a start tomorrow if I get the chance. Alai 04:32, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Please remember to substitute warning templates

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. When using certain templates on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:uw-test1}} instead of {{uw-test1}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Thank you. lacking in tact...

The treatment of Cstanfie and the Jay S. Thomas article is panning out to be the most niggardly display of wiki editorial abuse and harassment that I have ever witnessed. Regardless of the issues of religious and racial discrimination, this is turning into a calculated and craven effort to stifle individuals, not simply what you consider to be arbitrarily lacking. The personal attacks need to stop and the harassment of Cstanfie and his associates must desist, pending previously stated ramifications. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rellis0415 (talkcontribs) 12:36, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Being from Ohio myself originally, I have spent hours reading the many articles you have been involved with. You have done a tremendous job with this body of work and I look forward to reading more in the future. Congratulations. Trusilver 19:59, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, unfortunately, some people take it personally. Corvus cornix 21:57, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Copyvio CSD tag

Whoops, I pasted the wrong URL (the one I meant to use was from vh1.com). Thanks for catching! Cquan (after the beep...) 03:45, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for helping stem the copyvio tide, but please be careful removing cv tags. Some articles on answers.com are mirrored from WP. Others, like this one, are from other websites that cannot be posted here. Thanks! --Butseriouslyfolks 03:48, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Please see comments on Talk:Southwestern College (Kansas) about the addition of "United States" to the wording. Thank you very much!--Paul McDonald 00:59, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Re:Creation of Illinois township articles

Well, this was a project that I started earlier this year (see the list here Wikipedia:WikiProject Illinois/Townships). I got away from it to do some other things, cleaning up and whatnot. I simply need to finish off these 27 county townships, and well almost all the precincts. Maybe I can convince you too come help us out real quick here in Illinois! haha --Kranar drogin 04:12, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Naw, I will just keep plugging away here. With the geobox, it isn't that bad to do, just gets boring after awhile. But I figure, once I get it done, it will be done. One thing I noticed when I did take a quick glance at a few of your townships is that you don't have the Ohio wiki project on the talk page. You may want to add that in your articles, but that is up to your project. Luckily, I have my template I use for each county copied on word, then I just copy and paste, and change out the few things that need changing, ie founding date, coords, pop, etc. Thanks for the comments though, I do appreciate it.--Kranar drogin 13:10, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Why remove the speedy delete? --ZxqamF 12:39, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

You proved your point after the first post, and if you notice, I didn't replace the speedy deletion tag. You had a valid reason, and one that I hadn't considered. Your second and third posts are excessive. --ZxqamF 14:10, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
My reasoning was that, knowing nothing beforehand about the subject, the article gave me no information. I did not know what it was talking about, and, quite frankly, the title Wulfrida seemed questionable. You quickly found it and fixed it to a reasonable state, but as it stood when I tagged it, it was quite useless. --ZxqamF 14:17, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Is there a specific issue you have with the improvements I made to this article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.180.148.67 (talk)

Re:Belle Center references

Ah, okay. Do you happen to still have the page numbers, etc., still lying about? Octane [improve me] 28.06.07 0110 (UTC)

I just wanted to say that the article looks much better since you rearranged the pictures! Do you have any personal history with Colonial Hills? george 01:06, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
