Fun!
Hey, just popping by to say that it is fun working with you on the Horses in the United States article. Looks like it's getting whipped into shape! Montanabw(talk) 07:22, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Montanabw: Thanks. You have performed most of the work on it, although I have made a few improvements. FYI, the DYK nomination at Template:Did you know nominations/Horses in the United States has been approved as good to go.
- I enjoy collaborations, but it's difficult to find interested parties. Feel free to contact me anytime with collaboration suggestions. North America1000 07:25, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- I find that collegial, AGF collaborations are very helpful. Do you like working on horse articles? We have to keep on top of the American Pharoah article for the next three weeks, until after the 2015 Belmont Stakes. I'd kind of like to nominate it for GAN if others are on board. (I did California Chrome last year, it was TFA on May 2). If things like the Horses in the United States article are of greater interest, I've long wanted to clean up and improve Spanish Mustang and Colonial Spanish horse - tons of really cool research happening on the origins of these horses. Montanabw(talk) 18:43, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- I also have long wanted to bring a particular article to GAN, but it is a long, difficult article with RL political drama and as such needs a lot of very careful handling. Unfortunately, it keeps getting hit by POV-pushing people who accuse me of OWNership and call me every name in the book when I try to exercise quality control. If you are OK diving into article improvement of a dramafest article, I'd be delighted to have some help and all ears to hear how you keep from ripping your hair out! Montanabw(talk) 18:43, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- Montanabw: N.b. (sorry) I missed something; a QPQ review needs to be performed by the nom to qualify the DYK nom to move forward. North America1000 17:07, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- N.b. Resolved QPQ confirmed as performed. Good to go. North America1000 17:43, 19 May 2015 (UTC)

Montanabw: (Regarding collaboration) – I like horses, but haven't performed much editing work in this area. However, I can chip in here and there. The Horses in the U.S. article is appealing because it deals with history too, which I like. Which one is the "dramafest" article? North America1000 01:05, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- You probably would find Colonial Spanish horse interesting. It is just a breeds list now, mostly, but the research of Dr Sponenberg at Virginia Tech on rare breeds and their origins has dug up some super cool stuff. It's also a quiet corner that doesn't get a lot of traffic. Good potential for a GA push some day. Room for a lot more work on United States Army Remount Service if MilHist interests you. Tell me more about the stuff you find most fun and I can definitely find a horse angle for it! Montanabw(talk) 02:12, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- The tough place to go is Mustang. :-P There IS a lot of history on the topic and some day I'd love to get that article to GA and maybe even FAC (which actually might ratchet down the drama if it could ever get there). But the history is tough and both past and present have much controversy. Prior to about 1930, it's hard to separate myth from reality. Basically, because people either love or hate wild horses with little in-between, it's a magnet for everything from people with RM requests who think the car should be WP:PRIMARY (there is, informally, a one-year moratorium on that one, luckily) to the political stuff - a lot of people, especially the anon IPs, hit the article to try and claim they are a native species - long story, bad science; others half try to argue that they are scrubs of no particular value and don't like that we even discuss the "are they a reintroduced after extinction species or an invasive non-native species" question in the first place and discount the legitimate research on the Colonial Spanish horse origins of some bands. There is also the "is this a breed or a type" question (and difficult to answer because there really isn't a definition of "horse breed" that is universally agreed-upon) Plus lately, there's some just plain weird stuff about how we should call them "wild" instead of "feral" because, I guess, popular culture calls them wild horses. Sigh. Trust me, put on your admin hat and watchlist, but dip your toe in that murky pond at your own risk! Montanabw(talk) 02:12, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- oh, and fear not about the horse angle - that's where I have the expertise - I like fellow researchers, copyeditors, helpers of any sort! I had Eric Corbett - a non-horse-person, walk me through the tuneup of Oxbow (horse) for FAC, and I in turn gave him horse advice on Florence Nagle, his recent FAC. Montanabw(talk) 02:14, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- Montanabw: I had no idea about the Wild horse/Feral horse controversy, nor about the discussion regarding Mustang. I need time to mull things over. For starters, I have listed Colonial Spanish Horse at WP:TAFINOM. Below are some interesting articles, in no particular order. I think I may like articles that focus upon uses of horses more than those about specific breeds, although the breed articles are nice too.
- North America1000 12:38, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- On the plough article, see horse collar, technology that revolutionized farming; draft horses are a LOT faster than oxen, thus could cover much larger fields, but they could not be used to their full strength until the horse collar superceded the yoke and/or the breastcollar harness. If you are into history of agricultural technology, that's a dandy one! I haven't done zip with horse and buggy, so that one is also wide open. Horsemeat and horse slaughter are highly controversial, lots of NPOV concerns, though still not as crazy as Mustang, interestingly enough. I knew User:Gwivna who created the horse transports article and popped by there when it was under construction and have reverted vandals since she left, but if there is good stuff for an upgrade, I can keep an eye on its continued progress. Montanabw(talk) 17:14, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- Montanabw:Here's a challenge. How, if even possible, could horses as a topic fit into the List of doughnut varieties article? . North America1000 13:15, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- LOL! Try a search, some horse will eat them! They aren't really supposed to, but they do. (Just saw a TV clip of one of the current contenders getting slipped a donut snack by a groom, but cannot remember who/where! Montanabw(talk) 17:14, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- Oh! Better yet! Police horse eats donuts! [5]. Montanabw(talk) 17:17, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- Goofin' around with Google's search algorithm:
- WTF.
- A strange gem?
- Horses are out there. Acid horse.

Would you be willing to expand your horizons?
Hey, NA1000. You've got a solid history of AfD work and closings -- could you be convinced to take on a little new XfD work? Martin Hoekstra is AWOL at TfD, and Plastikspork is showing up every 10 to 14 days to close a handful. No other admin is closing TfDs right now. Could you be talked into closing a couple of TfDs per day, and I'll see if I can recruit two or three more admins to help on the same basis? I would be happy to help in any way possible, including pointing you in the directions of the relevant guidelines and essays. Please let me know. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 14:31, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Dirtlawyer1: Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll keep this in mind. I have a rather full plate with present activity, so I can't commit or guarantee to various matters at this time. A good place to alert admins about this is at WP:AN. You may be also interested in the discussion occurring there at On the brink of collapse. North America1000 16:01, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- NA100, thanks for whatever you can do -- even picking off a handful when you can is helpful. You don't even have to close the hard cases -- there's about a six-week backlog right now where consensus is obvious for a lot of them. I've also pinged Dr. Mies and several other admins I know who have an XfD background, but haven't done a lot of TfD work. Plastikspork was the go-to TfD closer for several years -- probably closed 80%+ of all TfDs for a long time, but it's obvious that he is now pulling back now.
- BTW, I have not had particularly strong responses as the requested close board; seems things go on a to-do list, only to languish longer. Makes me wonder if anyone is actually checking the list. Most TfDs are relatively straightforward, and it would be easier and better if we had a pool of five or six regular closing admins. It's good to have the same frequent closers for consistency, but when it's down to one or two closers, I'm sure it feels like a burden. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 17:56, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- Dirtlawyer1: I have performed some closures at TfD (one of which I notice that you noticed, per a thank you I received from you on the notifications messaging system). I also appreciate your efforts to round-up parties that may be interested in working to reduce the backlog there. North America1000 18:32, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- Dirtlawyer1: I also relisted several dated discussions at TfD that have not received adequate input. North America1000 19:50, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- All good, sir. TfDs tend to get less participation than most AfDs; re-listing for up to a month is fairly routine. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:53, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for these. Could you review this closure of mine, given the response on my talk page? Alakzi (talk) 20:03, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- Alakzi: Since it's already been closed, I'd rather not become involved in much discussion after the fact here. When in doubt, leave discussions for an admin to close. From a brief spot-check review, it appears that all or most of the content from the template is present at List of multihulls. To be fair, I notified User:Pratyeka on their talk page about the existence of Deletion review (diff), in case the user is unaware of it. North America1000 20:35, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- Admins have been generally absent from TfD for quite some and I've closed my fair share of discussions (over thirty in the last three months). This is the first time I've had this sort of reaction, so I thought I'd check with somebody else. Pratyeka is aware of DR; he said he would not pursue it. Alakzi (talk) 20:54, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Need a revdelete
Hi. Sorry to bother you with this, but could you perform a revision delete for me? I just cleaned up some particularly nasty vandalism at Marie Allan. The last six revisions need to be redacted, starting with this diff. I checked a few other admins, but none of them seem to be active right now. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 01:20, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
- N.b. NinjaRobotPirate: Just FYI, in case you aren't aware of it, there's a list of admins who you can request to perform revision deletions at Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to handle RevisionDelete requests. North America1000 11:42, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
DYK for Vegetable chips
On 19 May 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Vegetable chips, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that potato chips are a type of vegetable chip? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Vegetable chips. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
