Administrators' newsletter – February 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2022).
- The Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines have been published for consideration. Voting to ratify this guideline is planned to take place 7 March to 21 March. Comments can be made on the talk page.
- The user group
oversight
will be renamedsuppress
in around 3 weeks. This will not affect the name shown to users and is simply a change in the technical name of the user group. The change is being made for technical reasons. You can comment in Phabricator if you have objections. - The Reply Tool feature, which is a part of Discussion Tools, will be opt-out for everyone logged in or logged out starting 7 February 2022. Editors wishing to comment on this can do so in the relevant Village Pump discussion.
- The user group
- Community input is requested on several motions aimed at addressing discretionary sanctions that are no longer needed or overly broad.
- The Arbitration Committee has published a generalised comment regarding successful appeals of sanctions that it can review (such as checkuser blocks).
- A motion related to the Antisemitism in Poland case was passed following a declined case request.
- Voting in the 2022 Steward elections will begin on 07 February 2022, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 26 February 2022, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
- Voting in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey is open until 11 February 2022.

Recent changes
- Special:Nuke will now provide the standard deletion reasons (editable at MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown) to use when mass-deleting pages. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [1]
- At Wikipedias, all new accounts now get the Growth features by default when creating an account. Communities are encouraged to update their help resources. Previously, only 80% of new accounts would get the Growth features. A few Wikipedias remain unaffected by this change. [2]
- You can now prevent specific images that are used in a page from appearing in other locations, such as within PagePreviews or Search results. This is done with the markup
class=notpageimage
. For example,[[File:Example.png|class=notpageimage]]
. [3] - There has been a change to the HTML of Special:Contributions, Special:MergeHistory, and History pages, to support the grouping of changes by date in the mobile skin. While unlikely, this may affect gadgets and user scripts. A list of all the HTML changes is on Phabricator.
Events
- Community Wishlist Survey results have been published. The ranking of prioritized proposals is also available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 February. It will be on all wikis from 24 February (calendar).
Future changes
- The software to play videos and audio files on pages will change soon on all wikis. The old player will be removed. Some audio players will become wider after this change. The new player has been a beta feature for over four years. [4][5]
- Toolforge's underlying operating system is being updated. If you maintain any tools there, there are two options for migrating your tools into the new system. There are details, deadlines, and instructions on Wikitech. [6]
- Administrators will soon have the option to delete/undelete the associated "talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option will also be available. This was a request from the 2021 Wishlist Survey.

Recent changes
- When searching for edits by change tags, e.g. in page history or user contributions, there is now a dropdown list of possible tags. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [7]
- Mentors using the Growth Mentor dashboard will now see newcomers assigned to them who have made at least one edit, up to 200 edits. Previously, all newcomers assigned to the mentor were visible on the dashboard, even ones without any edit or ones who made hundred of edits. Mentors can still change these values using the filters on their dashboard. Also, the last choice of filters will now be saved. [8][9]
- The user group
oversight
was renamedsuppress
. This is for technical reasons. You may need to update any local references to the old name, e.g. gadgets, links to Special:Listusers, or uses of NUMBERINGROUP.
Problems
- The recent change to the HTML of tracking changes pages caused some problems for screenreaders. This is being fixed. [10]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 March. It will be on all wikis from 3 March (calendar).
Future changes
- Working with templates will become easier. Several improvements are planned for March 9 on most wikis and on March 16 on English Wikipedia. The improvements include: Bracket matching, syntax highlighting colors, finding and inserting templates, and related visual editor features.
- If you are a template developer or an interface administrator, and you are intentionally overriding or using the default CSS styles of user feedback boxes (the classes:
successbox, messagebox, errorbox, warningbox
), please note that these classes and associated CSS will soon be removed from MediaWiki core. This is to prevent problems when the same class-names are also used on a wiki. Please let us know by commenting at phab:T300314 if you think you might be affected.

More portals
Good spot with the duplicate "Read more" link on Portal:Rivers. I've fixed the similar cases except for 1990s, Fish and Laos. They use |more=no
, so I left the box-footer "Read more" in place as their only link to the transcluded article. Certes (talk) 12:48, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Certes: Thanks very much for your assistance. I noticed some portals that you removed the link from. It's obvious that only one link is needed, and it also streamlines portal layout a bit more, making it easier on readers to find information that may interest them. North America1000 06:48, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
Template:Transclude lead excerpt
Hey @Certes: Since I can't think of anyone else to ask who may be around in a relatively timely manner, I'll bother you with yet another question. Template:Transclude lead excerpt has the following parameter: "nobold=1
will cause bold text to be displayed in normal font", but unless I'm missing something, it doesn't seem to be working. I've tinkered with one of my article creations, List of sourdough breads, and it's turned out pretty nice using this template. I'd like to remove the bold from the listings if possible, without substituting and then copy editing, because then the benefits of immediate transclusion would be lost (e.g. updated content from articles being displayed). Am I missing something, or if not, is there a fix for this to remove the bolding and retain transclusions? Regards, North America1000 03:08, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
- Fixed in Module:Excerpt/portals. I documented
|nobold=
when Module:Excerpt was expanded for use in articles, but the new option wasn't implemented in the fork that was created for use in portals. This all seems to work, but you could consider using {{Excerpt}} instead in articles. Certes (talk) 11:00, 18 February 2022 (UTC)- @Certes: Thanks so much, 1) for the workup in the portal template and 2) letting me know about {{Excerpt}}, which I did not know existed until receiving your message above! Recent changes
- In the Wikipedia Android app it is now possible to change the toolbar at the bottom so the tools you use more often are easier to click on. The app now also has a focused reading mode. [12][13]
Problems
- There was a problem with the collection of some page-view data from June 2021 to January 2022 on all wikis. This means the statistics are incomplete. To help calculate which projects and regions were most affected, relevant datasets are being retained for 30 extra days. You can read more on Meta-wiki.
- There was a problem with the databases on March 10. All wikis were unreachable for logged-in users for 12 minutes. Logged-out users could read pages but could not edit or access uncached content then. [14]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 March. It will be on all wikis from 17 March (calendar).

uselang=qqx
to find localisation messages, it will now show all possible message keys for navigation tabs such as "View history". [15] - Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have
deletelogentry
anddeletedhistory
rights through their group memberships. Before, only those with thedeleterevision
right could access this special page. [16] - On the Special:Undelete pages for diffs and revisions, there will be a link back to the main Undelete page with the list of revisions. [17]

Classical music portal
Your changes to Portal:Classical music look lovely, thank you! It is certainly much more attractive and accessible now. I'm trying to think of another image that can be used for the contemporary music project—I assume the helicopter is there because of the Helikopter-Streichquartett, but I doubt any readers would know what it meant if they weren't familiar with the piece. I used an image of the Dream chord when I redid the Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical music page, though I'm not sure that it is even ideal for that page. Any thoughts? Aza24 (talk) 01:50, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Aza24: Thanks! I upgraded the portal to include many more selections, upgraded the layout, updated the DYK to display relatively recent entries, etc. and added some new miscellaneous stuff. Well, the Contemporary music task force is tagged as inactive, but it would still be suitable to have a link to it in case anyone may want to revive it some day. Regarding images for the Classical music portal linking to the project, similar musical notation as that of File:Dream chord on G.png is used as the icon for portal links to Portal:Classical music and Portal:Music (see right), so I don't think using the Dream chord file in the Classical musical portal to link to the inactive contemporary project would be ideal; it could confuse readers, at least theoretically, making the link images too generic on the page with too many similar images. Perhaps something entirely different that is not on the portal page would be more beneficial, such as simple flute images like File:Flûte1.JPG or File:Flute with musicial notes.jpg. I don't think the helicopter image is best either; it's entirely ambiguous.
- Also, the Classical music portal would benefit from more FA- and GA-class articles added to Portal:Classical music/Selected article. WikiProject Classical music does not assess articles, leaving it to sub-projects, many of which are inactive, so it can take time to find such articles manually. Please feel free to exand it if this is of interest to you. North America1000 20:17, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- I do like the flute images, but I fear that not enough distinguishes them as "contemporary". I could see something like this excerpt, but it may be too big (or otherwise undesirable). I will certainly add some more articles to Portal:Classical music/Selected article—probably this weekend, as I have been rather busy as of late (hence this late response!). Best – Aza24 (talk) 07:06, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Aza24: File:Schoenberg - "George Lieder" Op. 15-1 end.png is presently tagged as "This image may not have the proper copyright or licensing information, or there is a conflict of license." Another choice would likely be better due to this matter. North America1000 23:10, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Ukraine portal
Over at Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates, I suggested that "this seems to be a good opportunity for a portal but Portal:Ukraine is not keeping up." You may wish to address this... Andrew🐉(talk) 10:25, 28 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Andrew Davidson: I hesitate to perform work on the Ukraine portal at this time, for the simple fact that the country is in turmoil at this time and events are likely to continuously change. Plus, I performed a significant amount of work on the portal in December 2021. However, you should feel free to improve the portal if you'd like. North America1000 04:29, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Histmerge
Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Crai (supermarket) a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Crai. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.
In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. Dr Salvus 06:49, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Dr Salvus: Thanks for the reminder. The history merge for both the article and talk page has been performed. North America1000 22:04, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Why did you choose to delete the article, rather than redirect it, when the nom noted it was NN/TOOSOON and there was a reasonable redirect target proposed? Jclemens (talk) 07:48, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Jclemens: The nominator mentioned Pilu (TV series), but did not propose redirecting to the article in the nomination. Furthermore only one participant in the discussion opined for redirection. As such, the discussion was closed according to the consensus that ensued. While WP:ATD-R states that "a page can be blanked and redirected if there is a suitable page to redirect to...", the overall consensus was not for redirection, it was for deletion. Now, if I were to have closed the discussion as Redirect, many would likely considered that to be a WP:SUPERVOTE. North America1000 07:56, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- I disagree, and encourage you to reconsider. We have one keep/draftify, one redirect, and four deletes including the nom. None of the deletes mention redirection at all, and, as you note, ATD-R is a policy-compliant outcome of WP:ATD which states, "If editing can improve the page, this should be done rather than deleting the page." Further, WP:DGFA very clearly states "When in doubt, don't delete." (emphasis in original). Thus, while you have no one arguing the article should be kept in its current location, you also have one policy-based argument for redirection, the nom also identifying a redirect target, and no individual arguing that redirection is inappropriate in this case. In fact, a NN/TOOSOON is precisely the sort of article that should most commonly be redirected, as this person has the potential to develop additional RS coverage and become notable in the future. Thus, redirection allows the NN page history to be preserved for possible future use by regular editors, while deletion would either require a REFUND or a recreation, both of which are extra burdens either on the admin or editor involved. Of note, I don't care one way or another about this article, but do care that administrators are robustly considering policy based alternatives to deletion, hence me picking this at seemingly random to have a discussion about: I don't perceive that either one of us have strong feelings about this, so this is an ideal test case to consider. Cheers, Jclemens (talk) 17:23, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- The status quo is, and has been for a very long time, to follow Wikipedia:Consensus, which is also a policy page, in discussion closures throughout English Wikipedia. There's no dictum at WP:ATD that trumps Wikipedia:Consensus, and there's no dictum at Wikipedia:Consensus that trumps WP:ATD. I understand your points about redirection over deletion, to retain data, but in my view, the close was performed at its most accurate, based upon the consensus at the discussion. It's unclear why you didn't participate in the discussion yourself and !vote to redirect; maybe you didn't see it until after it was closed. At any rate, you can consider taking your case to Wikipedia:Deletion review regarding this matter. Perhaps others will agree with you there. North America1000 14:42, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
- I completely agree that consensus is important, but if you look at what Wikipedia consensus means, it explicitly specifies "Decision making and reaching consensus involve an effort to incorporate all editors' legitimate concerns, while respecting Wikipedia's policies and guidelines." Thus, if you or any admin doesn't consider appropriate ATDs while closing deletion discussions... you're not actually doing consensus per WP:CONSENSUS. Sure, I could go to DRV, but there are plenty of people there who don't "get" this either, so I'd rather work with individual admins, one at a time, to help you improve the match between what our policies say, and what you actually do. DRV gets bogged down in an endorse/overturn boolean, which leads to winners and losers. I'd rather collaborate. So have I convinced you to change this deletion into a redirection? If not, what would convince you? Jclemens (talk) 01:15, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
- I still feel that my close was the most accurate, because per how the discussion transpired, it plainly was. This is the type of matter you should consider creating an RfC for: to add a caveat to WP:ATD stating that when a valid redirect target has been suggested, even by a distinct minority of users in a discussion, then ATD is golden and the consensus of the discussion should be ignored in favor of ATD. I am virtually certain that if I were to have hypothetically closed the discussion with a redirect result, and the discussion then went to Deletion review, it would almost certainly be overturned with a delete result. Since you feel strongly about the matter, RfC would be the way to go, in my opinion, because it would likewise require a consensus to alter the ATD page to reflect your preferences. North America1000 22:14, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Of note, I don't care one way or another about this article, but do care that administrators are robustly considering policy based alternatives to deletion, hence me picking this at seemingly random to have a discussion about: I don't perceive that either one of us have strong feelings about this, so this is an ideal test case to consider. talk page
Hi-- for some reason, your user subpage User:Northamerica1000/user page top is showing up in Category:Pages where archive parameter is not a subpage, I believe because the MiszaBot template is on that page, and it's not technically a "Talk" page. I thought I'd let you know, so that you can fix it. Thanks --Funandtrvl (talk) 04:00, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Keventers Milkshake
On 14 March 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Keventers Milkshake, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in addition to creating milkshake products, Keventers Milkshake was also a major supplier of various milk products to the Indian Army for several decades up until the 1970s? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Keventers Milkshake. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Keventers Milkshake), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Recent changes
- There is a new public status page at www.wikimediastatus.net. This site shows five automated high-level metrics where you can see the overall health and performance of our wikis' technical environment. It also contains manually-written updates for widespread incidents, which are written as quickly as the engineers are able to do so while also fixing the actual problem. The site is separated from our production infrastructure and hosted by an external service, so that it can be accessed even if the wikis are briefly unavailable. You can read more about this project.
- On Wiktionary wikis, the software to play videos and audio files on pages has now changed. The old player has been removed. Some audio players will become wider after this change. The new player has been a beta feature for over four years. [26][27]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 April. It will be on all wikis from 14 April (calendar).
