Mind

[edit]

Hmm, interesting new talk page design! Anyways, the main reason I've been choosing around 22:00 UTC (plus/minus a few hours, of course) is that is the time I'm usually available to open the round. However, if it seems like most people are around on 5:30 UTC time, I could attempt to have it opened then. Perhaps a poll is in order? Anyways, good idea- I'll see what Deryck says, and then perhaps ask around and see what time most of the WP:MIND participants are logged on. For right now, though, I hope that the scoring changes Deryck implemented should keep it competitive. Good luck and have fun with the rest of the round! Cricket, Lovely Cricket

[edit]

Sure, I'll join wikiproject cricket. What does it entail? Do I get to bore all you young whippersnappers about how I was the first person to upload a schematic of all the fielding positions (it was rubbish)? (You know it's not really a cricket club without some doddering old timer telling you how much it was better in his day...) -- GWO 18:18, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nepal

[edit]

Nicholas, talk about a rush of people commenting on the article . I've tried to stop the 1920s royal pic, the only one on the left side, from covering the lower half of the text line above it. Unsuccessful. It would also be nice to shift one or two other pics to the left to avoid the long, continuous column of pics on the right. Tony 04:33, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

impressionist painting after 1921

[edit]

Does anyone know which impressionist artist painted French Revolution aristrocrats leaving (during the Revolution) in boats. The painting is oil on every early masonite so would have been painted around 1922 maybe. The brush strokes are certainly impressionist and the colors are vivid. Purchased it in San Antonio, Texas where many service men brought works back from France. The subjects (people in boats) are certainly dressed in French costumes and they are in small boats (what type was used for escaping?). which artist works should I view to see similar paintings?. Thank You for any suggestions. my e-mail is ngailgarrett@yahoo.com

Anthony de Mello

[edit]

I'm not quite sure why you had to ask me about it, but this guy founded the BCCI, is that right? If that's the case I'd put him at Anthony de Mello (cricket administrator), then, with a dab page at Anthony de Mello. He'd be more famous for his administration than 11 first class matches with a HS of 15 and 17 wickets? Sam Vimes 18:18, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As requested. Have fun with it - my article is heavily biased towards the cricketing side of things because I don't have any sources to write about the administrator-part. Sam Vimes 19:17, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

category for Padma Bhushan awardees

[edit]

Hi Nichalp, saw the above category created by you and categorised one of my articles under it. Then I realised that lot of people receive Padma Shri, then a Padma Bhushan and finally, a Padma Vibhushan if they are lucky. If I were to create separate categories for Padma Shri awardees and Padma Vibhushan awardees, a problem could be the surfeit of categories that can appear on an article. A way out would be to have one category for these three awards under the title Padma awardees just like the Government of India calls it. The existing category can be made a redirect, if required (It may not be required as there are only two articles under it). If you are okay with the suggestion of "Padma awardees" category replacing the current category, pl. let me know so that I can create the category and tag articles accordingly. (By my reckoning, there would be 150+ articles that need to be categorised under the Padma awardees.) --Gurubrahma 00:58, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Casino Goa article says "Those below 18 are not barred from entering." I'm wondering if there's a typo here as it sounds not quite right to me. Did you mean "Those below 18 are barred..."? --A bit iffy 12:08, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you got it right. Tamil doesn't have any alphabet corresponding to the sound "B". Some people say that these sounds don't occur in classical Tamil, whereas, some others say that these sounds are there in Tamil and the same letters are pronounced differently based on some rules.

World not travelled

[edit]

(answered on my talk page but not sure if you'd be watching there so re-posting here)

Hi World-(not-travelled-to-India)-traveller! Any plans to visit India? I'm curious: what is the highest/lowest point you have been to, and the hottest/coldest temperatures you have experienced? Thanks =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:28, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yes, one of the large gaps in my coverage of the world! Definitely plan to visit India one day, but South America, Mali and Ethiopia are currently ahead of it on my schedule. There will be a total solar eclipse visible from northern India on 22 July 2009, that could certainly encourage me to get over there.
As for my highest/lowest etc, yes, I am enough of a travel obsessive to keep a track of things like that! [1]. Should be going further south and also higher than ever before when I go to Patagonia in a few weeks time... Worldtraveller 11:44, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Graph

[edit]

I have the sources for EoI graphs, but OO.o can't export text in the graphs, when it saves to SVG. After some experimentation, I managed to export Image:India-states-map-blank.svg to SVG using OO.o. Apparently, you have to save to an image, open it in OO.o draw & then save to SVG. Wierdly, I can't open this file in inkscape. Anyways, converting the images to SVG shouldn't be a problem, but I am not sure it is desirable to directly use it in the article, since not everyone would have installed the plugin or would have a browser that suppports svg. Most of the svg images are either linked from the article or were used to create SVG images. What do you think? --PamriTalk 13:50, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My bad, didn't realise mediawiki converts to png. I guess, converting to SVG wouldn't be so bad then. BTW, what do you use for charts, maps & svg?--PamriTalk 16:23, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Bot

[edit]

In your example, based on the first line of:

Changlang,Changlang,124994,4662,27,AR-CH

You basically want to create a new article that is called Changlang with the following wiki text to start off the article:

'''Changlang''' is a district with a population of 124994 and an area of 4662 and. Changlang is the district headquarters.

Is that correct? And if the article exists, do you want it to simply tack your text to the beginning of the page? Or do you prefer it to skip it? --AllyUnion (talk) 15:56, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

SVG R&D

[edit]

Hi, I finally got my linux up & running & wierdly, inkscape works better here. It even renders the OO.o generated files perfectly. I generated Image:Nepal_map2.svg this using potrace, a commandline utility that inkscape uses internally. Image:Nepal map-inkscape.svg was traced (see http://www.inkscape.org/doc/tracing/tutorial-tracing.html - choose multiple scanning->color instead of the options listed above) with inkscap. I am yet to figure out how to resize it though. I was looking through pychart & it seems to generate some good graphs, is easy to use & exports to SVG. PamriTalk 09:47, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have resized Image:Nepal_map-inkscape.svg, but the size still hasn't reduced. Maybe, it has to do something with the huge no. of nodes. I think, we need to use a plain bitmap to trace without the captions & then readd it in inkscape. I am more noobie than you in SVG, so am just guessing. BTW, does your DNS settings in /etc/resolv.conf point to your router/isp? PamriTalk 12:26, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

New OLD PHOTOS

[edit]

Please see the old photos in this link, taken by me and not published any where.

http://yourindianancestors.photosite.com/Album5/Chapter1/

Late Dilip Singh Ji was an well cricketer and Maharaja of Bhavanagar. He was also High Commissioner for Australia under British rule, before merger.

Letter of CR during Congress session at Nasik when my father was in PWD, Bombay. He wanted Kodabale (south Indian dish) to eat. He visited our house and remarked ’’’This has been made for the occasion’’’ on seeing the new photos of Gandhiji etc. brought at that time. This shows how shrewd he was. My father was a faithful British Govt. servant. and also a Free Mason (a Secret British Society) like Lions Club now.

You can see the photos and how they can be useful to Wiki projects.

Ganpanti

[edit]

Hi Nichalp, I noticed in your comments on my talk page you mentioned Ganpanti celebrations, and the link to Ganpanti was red. Is this worthy of an article? If you're too busy, point me in the right direction and I'll get a stub started. Proto t c 09:52, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
