X chromosome ideogram - Xq28
You made the X chromosome ideogram, correct? I found it when I was looking things up to expand the Xq28 article, and I notice that marker doesn't appear on the diagram. I'm not sure what this means. Could you clarify, please? Respond here or on my talk page. LeaHazel : talk : contribs 12:12, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- I made it after an original drawing by the National Library of Medicine (http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/chromosome=X). The q28 marker is most probably left out to save space. –mysid☎ 12:20, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Help over at CAT:CSD
Hi, and congrats on your promotion! Per this discussion, I'm dropping a friendly note to some of the recently-promoted admins requesting help with speedy deletions. I am not an administrator, so if you don't feel comfortable diving into deletions - or if you need more info - please don't come to me, but I'm sure that Cyde Weys would be happy to guide you if you want to help. Artikkeli Jani Toivolasta
Ilmeisesti sinulle, Mysid, on jokseenkin hankalaa keskustella seksuaalisista vähemmistöistä. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.222.200.48 (talk • contribs) 20:16, February 11, 2007 (UTC)
|
Apparently it is somewhat difficult for you, Mysid, to discuss sexual minorities. If e.g. Jani Toivola happens to be one, why shouldn't it be mentioned? It is about a celebrity, afterall, who has himself admitted being a homosexual. E.g. in the Finnish Wikipedia you'll find a large list of bi- and homosexual people (this is freedom of speech!). I think people should be able to discuss sexual minorities. You'll achieve nothing by staying silent. I believe/hope that in Finland people would stop the fear of homo- and bisexual people. It feels as if things can't be said aloud. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.222.200.48 (talk • contribs) 20:16, February 11, 2007 (UTC)

Unbelievably a certain user has now put all of the cinema templates up for deletion including that good looking Finnish one above. I beelive they serve a great purpose for establishing a better understanding and connection between articles of each industry to make them flow. But in totla haste he has gone ahead and proposed the lot. If my hard work is deleted I really feel that I should leave wikipedia for good and feel my 35,000 edits are not really respected. I am willing to limit the use of the American template but not the others. It will affect thousands of articles already. Many users have expressed that they think the tmeplates are very useful from all over.

Hi there. You recently made an edit to the Northern Ireland page to change the infobox to be more consistent with other country pages. Fair enough, probably needed doing. Unfortunately when you made the change the page was protected due to edit warring so the edit really shouldn't have been made. Normally this wouldn't have been a problem as you weren't intending to change content, but when you changed the infobox you put in the text "Currently without a national flag". While this may be true this particular sticking point was the whole reason the page was protected in the first place and shouldn't really have been made. I leave it up to you as to whether to reverse it or just remove that bit or nothing as you see fit, but I'm just bringing to your attention that due to the protecting this particular bit of edit probably shouldn't have been made. Ben W Bell talk 09:10, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- As another admin who has had to respond to two different editprotected requests about that infobox, I would also like to ask you to either revert yourself until the dispute is settled or at least remove the line about the national flag. CMummert · talk 13:58, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Actually the current version is the correct version as per the discussion and concensus on the talk page.--Vintagekits 14:09, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Mysid, you may also want to review the talk page to see the discussion there. CMummert · talk 14:34, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- I am very sorry for the mess; I have now reverted my edit. Of course I should never have edited a page protected because of a content dispute. The change of the infobox was requested by someone else who thought the country infobox would fit better there, and I made the edit in good faith, unaware of the difference in nuance. –mysid☎ 15:16, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Having looked at your revert I now realise that I made a mistake in thinking that the line in question had been added by yourself. It turns out all you did was update the box to a different infobox, but kept the text that was already there from an earlier version. I think with the reversions that had been going on prior it had been missed by myself and others. I do apologise for saying you added that line when you hadn't, it had just become more prominent. Request
Hi Mysid. I recently saw that you redesigned the image for sulbutiamine. It looks fantastic. Unfortunately, however, the original image that I drew was flawed. The molecule is missing a methyl group toward the lower right. It should be attached to the carbonyl carbon there. If you are having difficulty seeing what I am talking about, notice that the entire molecule should be symetrical about the disulfide bridge. In other words, each sulfer should have an equal portion of the molecule attached to it. I would fix the image myself, but I don't have a program that can edit vector graphics. I would greatly appreciate it if you could fix that for me. Thank you. Firewall62 (talk) 04:49, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Can you help me? I created an article, "CJ Johnson" and it was nominated for deletion. I think the administrator that tagged it never read the article. Unspecified source for Image:MS-DOS_icon.png
Thanks for uploading Image:MS-DOS_icon.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hi Mysid, as part of my work on Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template, I've seen lots of your good work, so I thought I'd ask a favor. Hope you don't mind! I'd like a flag for the all-Ireland field hockey teams. If you look at this webpage, you'll see a low-quality JPEG file of the flag we need. It has a centre shield on a green background, with a banner of "IRELAND" underneath. The shield has the main components of the existing Image:Four Provinces Flag.svg (in slightly different positions), so I would think it might be simple for an SVG expert to use that as a starting point. If you can do this, please place the new image at Image:Flag of Ireland hockey team.svg (similar to the naming convention of Image:Flag of Ireland cricket team.svg). If not, and you have a suggestion of where I should make this request, that would help too! Thanks, Andrwsc 19:27, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Mysid, we have found out that you are an expert drawing flags. Our association have made an official variant of flag for Tornedalians. You can see it at http://www.tornedalsflaggan.com. We would appreciate you to make our flag as a free jpg-flag. It is exactly like the Estonian flag but the fields are from botten to top Blue, white and yellow. Its a a tri-color, with three equal horizontal bands. The width to length ratio is 7:11, and the exact standard dimensions are 1000 by 1650 millimeters. I have not the definite colours yet bud we hope you can take them from the sample on my site above and replace with the real colours later.
So we hope you can help us doing that favour. This flag will replace both the two shown in article about Tornedalians and every variants shown in Wkipedia.

- Var så god: . It is not a JPEG image as you asked, because JPEG is an unsuitable file format for flags. Instead, I wrote it in the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format. In the image's description page you can also download a rendering of it in the PNG format by right-clicking on the big preview image. PNG is very widely supported, and much better for flag images than JPEG. I released the image into the public domain. Go' natt! ›mysid (☎∆) 19:43, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
OECS flag
How did you make that beautiful OECS flag? How do you create all these advanced shapes? --Shandristhe azylean 14:26, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the compliment. I drew it in CorelDRAW, a versatile vector graphics editor program that I learned to use in the digital arts lessons in my school. The shapes are all made of lines, Bézier curves, ellipses, and gradient fills, all of which are easy to create in CorelDRAW. I don't have access to the (expensive) software any more, but I'm learning to use Inkscape, a free – albeit not as advanced – alternative. ›mysid (☎∆) 15:15, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

SVG Diagrams
Hello Mysid,
I saw that you redid my old diagram for the Constitution of 1791 (Upper and Lower Canada). However, this diagram was done a while ago (it was uploaded oct. 3rd 2004 according to the logs) and it should be redone to be better (and more accurate). Ideally, I would like to redo this diagram and all my other diagrams in SVG myself. Here is my problem:
I use Dia on a Ubuntu system. The SVG export of Dia gives crappy results and this is why I exported to png in the past. The only way I found to export to SVG with proper results was to export to EPS format from Dia, import the EPS in Adobe Illustrator, just to export it back to SVG. Inkscape cannot import EPS unfortunately. Since I do not own a copy of Illustrator, this is not convenient at all. Even if I owned one actually, I would prefer not to encourage the use of a proprietary software.
Do you by any chance know a free software-only way to go from Dia format to SVG so as to work around the broken SVG export of Dia? I guess I could do it all from scratch in Inkscape (like you did I presume), but this would be very frustrating as I have zero experience with this application or any other vector-drawing program. -- Mathieugp 19:18, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Sadly, I don't know of a way to convert from (E)PS to SVG, either. I've tried it with several programs, e.g. with pstops and pstoedit, but they have either segfaulted or produced horrible results. I have a bunch of files waiting for conversion. But I really suggest you spend some moments with Inkscape. Tavmjong Bah has written a great free guide called Inkscape: Guide to a Vector Drawing Program. ›mysid (☎∆) 19:38, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks anyway. :-) Hopefully, the next version of Dia will include a fix for the SVG export. I will make sure the developers are at least aware of the problem I have experienced. -- Mathieugp 12:51, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:AppleIIGSOS.png
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:AppleIIGSOS.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. - Hi, nice to hear you liked it. :) Nowadays I modify the files using perl though, as doing that in vim proved to be too tedious. See User:Mysid/scripts. The scripts also circumvent a librsvg bug which would otherwise prevent subscripts from displaying correctly. BKChem can crop the images though, which I didn't know when coding that. ›mysid (☎∆) 07:04, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
OK, that is the coolest! I'll go tell the folks at the structure drawing workgroup about your script. --Slashme 08:38, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- Just a little warning – I didn't code it with portability and user-friendliness in mind. ›mysid (☎∆) 15:43, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
Well, the Finnish comments kind of tipped me off to that. Don't worry, it's a short script, and even Perl, with its reputation as a "write-only" language is amenable to analysis ;] --Slashme 13:13, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hopefully the English comments I just added provide some help. ›mysid (☎∆) 08:53, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- Oops, too late for me! I hacked away at the script over the weekend, and made the following changes:
- Merged the files
- Used the coordinates of the svg elements to initialize the edge-search
- Change to perl built-in file handling. Not sure whether this is an improvement, though.
- Redid the location of the image on the viewbox. Not sure whether I needed this because of something else I might have messed up, though.
- Change the font to Sans, because that works pretty much everywhere
- not resizing, so change subscript size to 9pt instead of 36pt.
- Use ImageMagick to get lines of pixels from the image. Not sure whether this is an improvement, but it eliminates one temporary file, and the greyscaling step.
- Don't re-scale the file:
- Keeps the linesize at 1, so one less thing to change
- Avoids unexpected bugs with elements that have a different paint setup
- Avoid need to re-scale all fonts
- I'll dump my work at User:Mysid/scripts/Slashme, and you can let me know whether it works for you as well. --Slashme 18:00, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- Update: I fixed a problem with my edge-finding code by blurring the image. This has the advantage that it automatically creates a border. --Slashme 20:30, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- Cool! Thanks so much for the updates. (I feel inferior now :) Every single one is surely an improvement. ›mysid (☎∆) 06:29, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- Glad you like it! I tested it with about the most complex reaction of non-existent molecules that I could construct in BKchem in one minute, and it seemed to work OK. I always change all those 1pt lines to one path with inkscape and then clean up with vim after drawing a molecule in BKchem. If it weren't for the fact that this script will become obsolete as soon as librsvg gets fixed, I'd be tempted to implement that function here, but it's probably better to request that as an option in BKchem. Oh, and no reason to feel inferior! You had the idea in the first place and did the heavy lifting. I just hacked at your code. The first time I read the SVG code to one of your molecule drawings I was inspired. I could immediately see that a person with a sense for data had made it! --Slashme 09:09, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- I can't test it right now, but does it still scale the images, just without changing the coordinates? My point in scaling was that Mediawiki has trouble making larger thumbnails than the "native" size of the SVG. ›mysid (☎∆) 19:06, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- That bug seems to have been solved. See User:Slashme/testthumb. By the way, I have included code to fix superscripts as well (after I redrew Image:Zinc gluconate structure.svg and needed a Zn^2+. --Slashme 20:28, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
I've moved my hacked version of your script to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chemistry/Structure_drawing_workgroup/Mysid's_script, because that's a more sensible location – I'll be recommending it as a workaround until librsvg is fixed, and maybe the other editors will also be hacking away at it. --Slashme 08:13, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, my constant chatter might be getting irritating by now, but I just wanted to mention that the bazaar effect seems to be working already: Someone has cleaned up the file handling a bit. I have already taken out the cropping code, because as you mentioned, BKchem does that already. --Slashme 19:46, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- No problem at all, and thanks for making me famous. :D The script is so much more platform-independent now, as well as less bloated. I seriously hope the bug (#5792 in Wikimedia Bugzilla, #340047 in librsvg's one) will get fixed though. As well as the other bugs so I can continue my SVG crusade. :) (I don't have one) ›mysid (☎∆) 20:04, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Glad to see that the bug is in the pipeline. Any dayyear now everything will be perfect ;]--Slashme 05:52, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Replaceable fair use Image:Dialog1.png
Thanks for uploading Image:Dialog1.png. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Liftarn 14:22, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
May you help me?
Hi, I've seen that you're so good in graphics. I've also seen that you've made this image; I'm trying to translate this page into Italian and I want to create the flag of this city. May you help me? The original flag is this and you can find the seal here.
Thank you so much in advance
TøW€®MªN ™ answer me 08:10, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- I will try my best. I'm not that keen on drawing US city flags any more though, as I'm not really sure about their copyright status. But let's see what I can do. ›mysid (☎∆) 20:06, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Also check out the Graphics lab for this type of request. --Slashme 05:55, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
A Wikipedia meetup in Helsinki?
Hello! Are you interested in a meetup for contributors of the English language Wikipedia in Finland? If so, please comment at Wikipedia:Meetup/Helsinki (and, of course, invite other Wikipedians you know who might be interested). Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 11:47, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
HD Ready 1080p
Hello. I've updated the HD Ready article with some information about the new HD Ready 1080p label that EICTA released this summer. As you have already submited a svg version of the original logo (Image:HD_ready_logo.svg) , it would be great if you also create a new version for HDReady 1080p :-) http://www.eicta.org/fileadmin/user_upload/document/PR_-_EICTA_launches_1080p_qualifier_logos.pdf Thewikipedian (talk) 21:45, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- Done, see Image:HD ready 1080p logo.svg. I made it white on black, probably it wouldn't matter. ›mysid (☎∆) 11:40, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Your changes to the Claws Mail page
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Claws_Mail&diff=172693845&oldid=171405908
Can you explain why you made these changes? In particular...
block 1: I understand why you changed 'it is' to 'is intended to be', but why the part of about the interface being similar to Sylpheed's and the other removals?
block 2: 'like' becomes 'such as', rather pedantic, but I'm not concerned about this.
block 3: why remove 'and more'? It is true that there are more, it's not a point of view.
Claws (talk) 10:39, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hi! My main objective was to make the article conform to the neutral point of view policy. To me, words like "light", "easy", "intuitive", and "flexibility", when describing a computer program, are subjective and, in an encyclopedia, need reliable sources. I'm sorry if I overdid it, you are of course free to add them back if you wish. ›mysid (☎∆) 16:19, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Uuno kaksoisagentti cover.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Uuno kaksoisagentti cover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 21:19, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, I've improved the rationale now. ›mysid (☎∆) 05:39, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:Rehobothflag.png)
Thanks for uploading Image:Rehobothflag.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 20:28, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
- Great that it's been replaced. It was public domain though, not fair use. ›mysid (☎∆) 09:16, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
problem with Sun_red_giant.svg
Hi, I just noticed there are two large problems with that file. One is that the estimated diameter of the Sun when it becomes a red giant is actually 2 AU, not 1. The radius would be about 1 AU if it reaches the orbit of the earth, making the diameter 2.
Also, it is definitely not to scale. I don't know if the image was intended to be to scale, but the Red Giant article refers to the picture as though it was. With the current sun 25 pixels in diameter, the red giant sun should be about 5357 pixels diameter. About 10 times larger than at present.
-Arrkhal (talk) 20:33, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hi! Thanks for bringing this into my attention. Are there any sources for the actual estimated diameter? The Red giant article says nothing. ›mysid (☎∆) 22:27, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
- Well, citations 7, 8, and 9 in the red giant article are the ones referenced where it says the sun, as a red giant, will engulf the earth (or at least the earth's current position). One illustrates the sun going a bit past the earth's orbit, the other two show it stopping just short of earth. Given that the earth's average distance from the sun is 1 AU (150 million km), that does place the diameter at roughly 2 AU, not 1. The original image author apparently confused radius with diameter. The stated current diameter of the sun (14 million km) is correct. -Arrkhal (talk) 02:49, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. I made an attempt at fixing it – there's now a neat "magnifying glass" over the Sun. ›mysid (☎∆) 07:54, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Diagram
Hello Mysid,
I see that you have redone a diagram of mine in SVG. Thank you for doing this. Unfortunately, of all the diagrams I have contributed to Wikipedia, this is by far the worst and most inexact one. If I update my original png diagram and publish it online here, would you mind updating your SVG as well? -- Mathieugp (talk) 23:13, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
