Venus

[edit]

Hello. Venus is a Featured Article, that is, it is held to be amongst the best articles in Wikipedia in terms of accuracy, neutrality, completeness, and style. When editing such articles, please check that your edits are properly formatted (see the rest of the article for how references are made, particularly with regard to external links). I would edit it myself and fix it, but before doing so, do you have a better source than skytonight.com and aerospaceweb.org for this paragraph? In addition, I see that this theory was announced only 3 days ago. What sort of acceptance does it have in the scientific mainstream? Thanks, and regards, --BillC 08:55, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bill. Thanks for your comments. I edited the Venus page again in response. Wideangle 07:48, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

General epistles

[edit]

In biblical literature usually is used the Catholic epistles (e.g. Metzger, Rhodes). Almost every biblical scholar use this term. I do not know why wikipedia uses General epistles, perhaps we should change it. We can use two of them, but Catholic epistles typical for the biblical scholars. Leszek Jańczuk (talk) 21:00, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Leszek: Thank you for your comments. Permit me to suggest that Talk:General_epistles (currently empty!) would be the ideal place to conduct a discussion of this topic. Would you consider entering your comments there? Wideangle (talk) 21:34, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You know, in many languages these two terms are used (not in Russian "Councils epistles"). We can use two of them. General epistles also are used very often. In fact I do not oppose. Leszek Jańczuk (talk) 22:05, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In America, "catholic" is almost never used by laymen to mean anything other than Roman Catholic. Therefore, its use in the phrase "Catholic epistles" (especially when "Catholic" is capitalized!) is misleading when read by laymen. (By the way, I looked at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Leszek_Ja%C5%84czuk and I am very impressed!) Wideangle (talk) 01:55, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:BlaineStubblefield.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:BlaineStubblefield.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:05, 15 June 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ww2censor (talk) 03:05, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Joint Base Lewis-McChord education programs has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Wikipedia is not a directory.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ttonyb (talk) 01:42, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

IP block exempt

[edit]

I have granted your account an exemption from IP blocking. This will allow you to edit through full blocks affecting your IP address when you are logged in.

Please read the page Wikipedia:IP block exemption carefully, especially the section on IP block exemption conditions.

Note in particular that you are not permitted to use this newly-granted right to edit Wikipedia via anonymous proxies, or disruptively. If you do, or there is a serious concern of abuse, then the right may be removed by any administrator.

Appropriate usage and compliance with the policy may be checked periodically, due to the nature of block exemption, and block exemption will be removed when no longer needed (for example, when the block it is related to expires).

I hope this will enhance your editing, and allow you to edit successfully and without disruption. Daniel Case (talk) 03:59, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Daniel. You have my assurance that I had nothing whatever to do with the vandalism, done by somebody totally unknown to me, that triggered this block. Wideangle (talk) 19:27, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Using previously published sources: Kirsten Rosenberg

[edit]

Hello. Thanks for expanding Kirsten Rosenberg. I'm afraid, however, that some of the content you added duplicated with minimal alterations material from http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:3PwqT_LB3vsJ:www.upc-online.org/forum2001speakers.html+%22Kirsten+Rosenberg+is+a+lifelong+animal+advocate+and+a+vegetarian+since+the+age+of+12.%22&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&source=www.google.com. This content has had to be removed until it is released under a compatible license. (For more information, please see "using copyrighted works from others" if you are not the copyright holder of this material, or "donating copyrighted materials" if you are.)

The source says:

Kirsten Rosenberg is a lifelong animal advocate and a vegetarian since the age of 12. She has been professionally involved in the animal protection movement since 1991, when she began working for the L.A.-based Ark Trust. As Project Assistant, Kirsten helped produce the annual Genesis Awards ceremony and TV show, while also serving on California's veterinary state licensing committee. In 1996, Kirsten joined The Animals' Agenda as Assistant Editor.

You added the following (bolding to show exact duplication):

Rosenberg has been an animal advocate and a vegetarian since the age of 12. She has been professionally involved in the animal protection movement since 1991, when she began working for the Los Angeles-based Ark Trust. As Project Assistant, she helped produce the annual Genesis Awards ceremony and TV show, while also serving on California's veterinary state licensing committee. In 1996, she joined the staff of The Animals' Agenda magazine as Assistant Editor and later became the Managing Editor.

For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed or closely paraphrased from other web sites or published material; such additions will be deleted. Comparing them side by side, it may be easier to see where you have copied content precisely. The changes in the first sentence are too minimal, I'm afraid. The final sentence would probably have been fine if not in conjunction with the rest of the material.

Contributors to Wikipedia may use copyrighted publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences or phrases. Please see Wikipedia:Copy-paste for an overview of our handling of previously published content. Of course, the material may be rewritten, utilizing brief quotes if necessary. Jack Schaap scandal

[edit]

I see you have edited First Baptist Church (Hammond, Indiana)#History with some details of the Jack Schaap scandal. I added a brief entry to List of scandals involving evangelical Christians#Jack Schaap, 2012. You may wish to expand it. The entry in the list article does not need to be as complete as the detailed coverage elsewhere. We may want to create a separate section subheading in the First Baptist Church article, so the entry in the List of scandals article can link to it via the {{Main}} template. At the moment, the {{Main}} template links to the History section in the Church article, which is imprecise. --Teratornis (talk) 01:33, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Cupertino quarry shooting is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cupertino quarry shooting until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Re: Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows

[edit]

Aloha. I have a few questions about your latest edits. First of all, you say that "Joy does not generally identify herself as an animal "rights" activist". I'm curious about hearing more on that subject, but the majority of the sources refer to her as such. You also changed "animal rights" scholars to "animal advocates". I'm guessing you have a reason for this as well. I'm not a big fan of external links sections, as I believe much of the time such links can be best incorporated into the body of the article as references. This helps avoid a lot of the spammy links people add. Which brings us to the "Vegan Mainstream" link. I think VM is a great idea, and I would like to know more about it, but I'm not convinced it makes for an appropriate link in this article. On the other hand, if there is anything we can use in the article about the book, it may be useful as a reference. Considering the previous controversy (linked on the talk page) that this article went through, including the three separate deletion discussions, I think it is an extremely bad idea to return to the same problematic editing that led to its deletion. I have intentionally tried to steer the article away from these issues and to use only the highest quality sources. It may be that you are not familiar with these problems, but linking to a marketing source and a commercial website, while removing commonly used language seems to be placing the article in jeopardy once again. I would prefer if we did not go down this road. Viriditas (talk) 23:40, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Shalom, Viriditas. You say, "Considering the previous controversy (linked on the talk page) that this article went through, including the three separate deletion discussions, ..."; I beg to point out that it wasn't this article that underwent controversy; it was the "Melanie Joy" article and the "Carnism" article.

To expand on my note, I don't see that Joy particularly identifies herself as a proponent of "animal rights", "animal protection", "animal welfare", "animal liberation", or an "abolitionist". These terms all have varying shades of meaning and may roughly be placed at various spots on a spectrum of animal-movement ideology. Consider Wayne Pacelle, the president of HSUS. Pacelle almost invariably refers to himself and to the HSUS using the phrase "animal protection". He correctly avoids self-identifying as an "animal rights" proponent, as that would convey an incorrect connotation. Yet, if you Google <<"wayne pacelle" "animal rights">> you get 44,100 hits, whereas if you Google <<"wayne pacelle" "animal protection">> you get only 26,300 hits. Why do so many people apply the term "animal rights" when it is not appropriate? One reason is that many people don't know the difference. More reasons: "animal rights" takes fewer letters to spell and fewer syllables to say. Another reason: people opposed to the animal movement understand that much of the public is rubbed the wrong way by the phrase "animal rights", so they deliberately apply that phrase to their opponents in order to discredit them. An example: "In 2004 Wayne Pacelle was named president of the world’s richest animal rights organization, the Humane Society of the United States." (http://www.humanewatch.org/person/wayne_pacelle/). Another example: "Wayne Pacelle is the president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), an extremist animal rights group that deceptively portrays itself as an animal welfare organization." (http://www.activistcash.com/person/3366-wayne-pacelle/)

I will try to address your other questions over the next several days. Wideangle (talk) 05:25, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
= = = = =
Viriditas: I resume my response to your comments and questions. I understand that you are "not a big fan of external links sections". However, it is normal for a good Wikipedia article to contain an External links section. I just checked the Wikipedia "Today's featured article" for the 31 days of October 2013 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Today%27s_featured_article/October_2013) and found that 21 of the articles have External links sections and 10 do not (the 10 are the articles for October 10, 11, 12, 16, 18, 20, 24, 26, 30, and 31).

It is normal for the Wikipedia article about a commercial publication to list the publication's "Official website" in its Exernal links section. Examples:
As to the link to the author interview (http://www.veganmainstream.com/2012/02/24/feature-interview-melanie-joy-on-books-documentaries-and-carnism/), the interview is mostly about this book, so it's very appropriate to include this link. Wideangle (talk) 01:46, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's a marketing website interview. It doesn't really meet the criteria for an external link, however, I'm willing to waive the criteria and use it in the article if it is relevant. Viriditas (talk) 02:46, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I moved the link to that interview into the "Author interviews" section. Wideangle (talk) 20:27, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WP:BLP and reliable sourcing

[edit]

Hi Wideangle. I've just undone your recent addition to Gary Yourofsky. Your addition cited a forum post (which in turned linked to an inaccessible newspaper link) and contained negative (and negatively-phrased) information about a living person. Per our policy on handling the biographies of living people, information added to these articles must be reliably sourced and neutrally handled, and that goes double for negative information. A forum post doesn't meet that bar of reliability, and at any rate even if the information were sourced, we would cover it with an encyclopedic voice and not provide colorful, conclusion-drawing commentary like "emotional outburst", "Yourofsky was angered" or "slung [something]". Please do give a read to our BLP policies before editing another BLP article; it's a policy that we take very, very seriously. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! A tag has been placed on Jack Norris (activist), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. American Independent Party and the 2016 presidential election

[edit]

First off, the AIP is only active in California, so whoever wins that state's primary is the nominee unless the nominee drops out. Second, America's Party and Tom Hoefling both admit they are no longer affiliated with the AIP. (This was posted on the party's own Facebook page.) The source that was on this page claiming Hoefling was going to be the nominee, I might add, was from June and before the primary was actually held, so it appears to have been made in error. Hoefling ran in the AIP primary but lost. Unless Spears withdrew from the race, it appears he's the AIP nominee for President. J. Myrle Fuller (talk) 20:15, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Charlie Ayers and Parsippany High School

[edit]

Your recent edit for Parsippany High School adds a source for Charlie Ayers from https://www.classcreator.com/. The problem is that the source, which is from a website that allows people to plan class reunions and appears to be entirely user-maintained, doesn't meet Wikipedia standards as either a reliable or verifiable source. The article from The New York Times confirms his notability, but makes no mention of Parsippany HS, let alone Parsippany; it's inclusion here may lead other editors to mistakenly believe that it establishes a connection for Ayers to the school. In the absence of the required sourcing, I will revert the edit and leave the entry for Ayers tagged as needing a citation. Alansohn (talk) 15:10, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You had said that the New York Times article "makes no mention of Parsippany HS, let alone Parsippany". The "Google Seder" article does mention Parsippany; that's why I added the citation to it. Mksword (talk) 20:56, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It was the way the NYT source was added that made it appear that it was about his notability; it does mention Parsippany, but nothing more. The underlying issue is that neither source, whether the Times or Moment magazine, mention Parsippany High School. The classcreator.com site does, but isn't reliable. I've looked through Google, and I haven't found anything better that would establish a connection. Alansohn (talk) 21:29, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve California Proposition 12 (2018)

[edit]

Thanks for creating California Proposition 12 (2018).

A New Page Patroller Boleyn just tagged the page as having some issues to fix, and wrote this note for you:

Please add clear, WP:INLINECITED references. 'External links' means suggestions for further reading, but we need it to be clear what your sources are.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can reply over here and ping me. Or, for broader editing help, you can talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Deletion discussion about Brian Wilson 2019 documentary film

[edit]

Hello, Mksword,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Brian Wilson 2019 documentary film should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brian Wilson 2019 documentary film .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

Footnote on Gabbard

[edit]

The quote you inserted from the NY Times journalist lacks parallelism and is ambiguous. Yes, "she would be the first female president". But she would not be "the first American Samoan, the first from Hawaii, the first surfer, the first vegan." She would be the first president of American Samoan descent, …. Also the “lays claim” makes it appear Gabbard might have made these statements about herself rather than these being attributions made by the journalist. I think it should be removed. Thoughts? Humanengr (talk) 20:58, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@AlsoWukai, I see you edited the footnote. Thoughts re my cmt above? Humanengr (talk) 23:12, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation pages

[edit]

Hello, Mksword. When you moved Duncan Hunter to a new title and then changed the old title into a disambiguation page, you may not have been aware of WP:FIXDABLINKS, which says:

When creating disambiguation pages, fix all resulting mis-directed links.
Before moving an article to a qualified name (in order to create a disambiguation page at the base name, to move an existing disambiguation page to that name, or to redirect that name to a disambiguation page), click on What links here to find all of the incoming links. Repair all of those incoming links to use the new article name.

It would be a great help if you would check the other Wikipedia articles that contain links to "Duncan Hunter" and fix them to take readers to the correct article. Thanks. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 13:01, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Russ. Thanks for the note. In response, I worked from https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere/Duncan_Hunter&namespace=0 and disambiguated the ambiguous wikilinks. Thanks again.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Dominion (2018 film) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://poisonfreemalibu.org/all-things-are-connected. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. A tag has been placed on Dominion (2018 film) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organized event (tour, function, meeting, party, etc.) that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". A tag has been placed on Dominion (2018 film) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

Thomas Philippe moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Thomas Philippe, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. buidhe 21:32, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Thomas Philippe requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Copying within Wikipedia

[edit]

You did not identify the source of the material in your edit. It appears to be Circus. Copying within Wikipedia is acceptable but it must be attributed.

This type of edit does get picked up by Copy Patrol and a good edit summary helps to make sure we don't accidentally revert it. However, for future use, would you note the best practices wording as outlined at Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia? In particular, linking to the source article and adding the phrase "see that page's history for attribution" helps ensure that proper attribution is preserved.

While best practices are that attribution should be added to the edit summary at the time the edit is made, the linked article on best practices describes the appropriate steps to add attribution after the fact. I hope you will do so.

I've noticed that this guideline is not very well known, even among editors with tens of thousands of edits, so it isn't surprising that I point this out to some veteran editors, but there are some t's that need to be crossed.S Philbrick(Talk) 14:38, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
