My RfA
[edit]Looks like I'm not too popular. If you come by that IP hopping vandal again, just final warn him/her...it's hit numerous pages about Canadian politicians of a party that he/she obviously doesn't like, no need to waste time, most admins autoblock the IPs (it's like a game of whack-a-mole gone bad). I've probably been targeted for initiating a discussion to create an edit filter and semi all his/her favorite pages, and reverting, but it can all be fixed with protection. See you around. Connormahtalk 18:07, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
I opined a "keep" at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stephano Barberis with the comment that that the article "needs cleanup for style and tone, and the addition of proper (and available) sourcing" as a surmountable issue... but had never stepped up and put actions to my words. So, since the DRV, I've been working the last couple days on a rewrite that would address concerns brought up at the AFD... in order to show that what I believed was possible, could in fact be done. Please compare THIS to my work at User:MichaelQSchmidt/workspace/Stephano Barberis and offer an opinion. And yes... I think the "Select videography" section will need massive trimming. Thank you,--Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 23:12, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Willie Irvine FAC
[edit]It appears that the book isn't an autobiography after all, so there isn't a problem as far as sourcing is concerned. Cheers, BigDom 06:57, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note - I'm glad I held fire on an oppose. Some places I look (eg Gbooks and Amazon) suggest that Irvine is the writer, but then the link you provide suggest that Thomas is. I'll let some others weigh in.--Mkativerata (talk) 07:03, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- I've had another look in the book itself: Irvine wrote some of the memoirs in a notepad and provided newspaper cuttings, etc. but the writing for the book was all done by Thomas. BigDom 07:14, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

debating articles
[edit]Regarding your comment on AfD's relating to debating articles. I am happy to let you know when I list one, but so as not to be seen as canvassing I would ask that you post a notice on my talk page requesting that. Codf1977 (talk) 18:41, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Codf1977 - I think I'd better look for the AfDs manually to avoid any accusations of canvassing (especially given that we both !vote delete near exclusively on these). Great work finding these articles. --Mkativerata (talk) 18:55, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- Understand. Would you have a look at European Universities Debating Championship, been looking for sources for this (for example here) and coming up against the same issue - only realy covered by the annual website plus the usual debating blogs. Comments ?Codf1977 (talk) 07:33, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- On Gnews I could only find hits in Turkish and Dutch and they looked very marginal. Hitting this one would be a big call though, judging by the number of active contributors on the talk page. But at the end of the day, this tournament gets what a couple of hundred contestants a year? Most of them under the age of 22. No-one else cares. --Mkativerata (talk) 19:43, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- I have posted a notice on WP:RS/N to see if they are RS, if not then I would propose to turn it into a stub.Codf1977 (talk) 10:25, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

RfA
[edit]Sigh. I really did want to co-nom you; that's how awesome you are :( Oh well, I predict a superb result anyway. Just value your time now, because once you get the mop, you toss out the pen :P. —fetch·comms 19:32, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Fetchcomms - I decided to go with a self-nom because I always like the "look" of other candidates putting themselves forward and it gives you more of an opportunity to introduce yourself. Also if my RFA turns south there aren't any nominators who'll get embarrassed. --Mkativerata (talk) 19:35, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- I hope that this comment does not appear to be patronising, as re-reading it I think it does a bit - sorry. I honestly don't mean it to come off that way I'm just of the belief that however mature we may be in one area of our life, we allways have room to grow in others. Good luck with the RFA (I'm sure you won't need it!) Pedro : Chat 20:10, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Mkativerata, did you read the article before you posted it on ITN? The lede of Colombia–Venezuela relations still says, "As of 22 July 2010, diplomatic relations between the two countries have been severed after a tit-for-tat response over allegations that Venezuela harboured FARC and ELN guerrilla camps." Never mind the "update" is all of 3 sentences backed up by a single source, the references are bare URL's, and other minor problems. This article is several hours work away from being ready to post. - It's just important to survey the entire article before posting to see if the rest of the article is contradictory/problematic. A few deficiencies here and there can be overlooked, and the general rule is one solid paragraph if the article already existed, and I like to see 1,000 characters of prose in new articles. ITN
[edit]Hi! (And congratulations on your new mop!)
I was about to post this at WP:ANI#Requesting Admin assistance with ITN/C, and thought better of it - at least, I should raise it with you first (this is about changing the image at Template:ITN:
Well, far be it for me to volunteer anyone, but on the basis of (a) they did the AgBank promote, and (b) blatant hazing of new admins: Mkativerata (talk)? You'd need to ask them, though - I've not broached the subject and given my terror of images, they may well have a similar phobia. You can but ask...
So, consider this me broaching the subject! I haven't posted at ANI, and I'll leave it up to you to decide whether the image needs changed, what it should be changed to, and whether your image phobia is worse than mine. TFOWR 22:58, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- I have to say I didn't consider an image for the Agbank posting as I doubt we have a suitable free one. Guido DeMarco seems the obvious choice for a new image, what do you think? --Mkativerata (talk) 23:30, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- That was my thinking too - more "interesting" than anything Agbank might throw up. There was a suggestion at ITN/C that it should be cropped, but I don't know if that's really necessary. Up to you though - I'm offline as of now ;-) TFOWR 23:34, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- Cheers - I don't think cropping is necessary but happy for someone else to crop if they think it would be a good idea. Anyway, it is done! --Mkativerata (talk) 23:35, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Hey, I've just returned from my wikibreak and I'm glad to see your RfA went well. :) It seems you've been putting it to good use- don't worry about the odd cock-up, it happens to all of us and they'll still drag you to DRV, ANI or anywhere else they can find even when you don't cock up! ;) Whatever drama you cause though, it'll be archive and forgotten about in a day or 2. Let me know if I can be of assistance and I hope to see you helping around ITN. :) Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:28, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Question
[edit]I hope you don't get bombarded with talk page comments because of your close of Steven Slater. I had a question though. How does policy work if the article is made about the event of the flight, which clearly would have a lot to do with him, and the effects that it has had across the spectrum? Do you think that would be okay to do? SilverserenC 03:52, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi SilverSeren - the issue then will be whether the article passes WP:NOTNEWS and WP:EVENT. I have doubts whether it would, but I wouldn't want to predict what the community might decide.--Mkativerata (talk) 03:58, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- Wouldn't it meet the criteria of "Events are also very likely to be notable if they have widespread (national or international) impact and were very widely covered in diverse sources, especially if also re-analyzed afterwards (as described below)." This is considering the fact that the event was covered in major newspapers across the world. SilverserenC 04:01, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- Again, I wouldn’t want to predict what the community might decide. News-related cases are always difficult to judge. What we may see here is a very brief burst of international coverage followed by nothing. Also, the text you've quoted above speaks of impact and coverage: this event has coverage, but does it have impact?--Mkativerata (talk) 04:04, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Firstly, thanks for taking the time to close what was a tricky AfD. There were good arguments on both sides, and I feel that your closing rationale was cogent and helpful. I have been bold and re-created the page as a redirect to JetBlue Airways#Incidents and accidents, given it is a plausible search term for this section. If you feel this is problematic, please let me know on my talkpage and feel free to revert. -- Lear's Fool 03:53, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Lear's Fool. I fully expected someone would create a redirect, I just didn't do it myself because it wasn't something there was consensus for (or against). I think your redirect looks fine. --Mkativerata (talk) 03:59, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- I was about to redirect to Flight Attendant, but I like this redirect better. I would also say that tomorrow, when all the fanboys and girls wake up and see that their article is missing, you may have have busy day. Good Luck.--Jojhutton (talk) 04:01, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- That is not a bad spot for a redirect. It should show up in Google searches, and can preserve the referenced content describing the incident. Per Wikipedia guidelines and policies, if the length of the section becomes too great to be encompassed in the article, a separate article could be spun off, as would be the case if somehow the incident became the subject of songs, books, plays, movies, or scholarly publications (not too likely). The encyclopedic coverage would be of the incident, rather than the previously nonnotable flight attendant. Still, the coverage of Slater appears to be greater (so far) than that of Balloon boy or Chesley Sullenberger, and most of the Delete arguments were pure "IDONTLIKEIT" even if couched as BLP1E. I have to question the giving of greater credence to the minority of delete arguments compared to keep arguments. BLP1E is not a magic word to make things go away that an editor does not like, when other editors cite multiple significant coverage in reliable and independent sources, satisfying WP:N. It is not true that we never have articles about persons known only for one thing. Edison (talk) 23:05, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- Actually if we are going to compare apples and oranges, Sullenberger was largely kept because he was considered notable before the flight; Balloon boy hoax is rightly an article about the event not the person so avoids BLP1E. As for "BLP1E is not a magic word to make things go away that an editor does not like, when other editors cite multiple significant coverage in reliable and independent sources, satisfying WP:N", well… BLP1E effectively overrides WP:N: it recognises that some people meet WP:N, but if they're notable only for one event, they don't get an article.--Mkativerata (talk) 23:12, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Sorry my mistake i misunderstood that Lear's Fool http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Lear%27s_Fool was the AfD closer as he posted the AfD first visable action on {Steven Slater]] History since deletion. My mistake. BTW check out my post on the Talk page of the appeals project page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Deletion_review 24.23.198.90 (talk) 06:48, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- No worries! I don't think you inadvertently circumvented any protection. I assume you first tried to edit WP:Deletion Review, which is protected. But the August 17 daily log page for Steven Slater isn't protected. IPs can comment on DRVs, they just can't edit the main DRV page.--Mkativerata (talk) 06:51, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
AfD closes
[edit]Hey. I realise your probably sick of hearing about the Steven Slater close, but I just thought I'd leave a note regarding the closure. Once the discussion is closed, the closing admin usually adds the {{oldafd}}
template with the result on the talkpage. I noticed you didn't do that (someone else added it), and was wondering whether you've heard of the closeAFD script. It automates most of the tedious stuff involved with AfD closure, and I've found very useful for the few non-admin closures I've performed. -- Lear's Fool 07:11, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks - I do use the Z-man script. The reason it didn't happen here is that I deleted the talk page as well, as is normal when an article is deleted at AfD. When you then created the redirect I thought it would be useful to restore the full talk page to accompany the redirect. I then forgot to manually insert the OldAfD tag.--Mkativerata (talk) 07:13, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

David Carlucci
[edit]I'm new at writing these articles, so I'm not sure what I can do (if anything) to prevent the David Carlucci page from being deleted. Since the issue is lack of media coverage, is there any way to salvage it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.6.219.18 (talk) 01:09, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi there - the article will be discussed for 7 days here: WP:Articles for deletion/David Carlucci. You're more than welcome to argue there to "keep" the article. The problem is likely to be that we generally don't have articles on local politicians and candidates (see WP:POLITICIAN). If he gets elected to the State Senate, he will certainly qualify for an article then. --Mkativerata (talk) 07:06, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
On 21 August 2010, In the news was updated with a news item that involved the article Australian federal election, 2010, which you recently nominated and substantially updated. Rugby League Player Notability Question
[edit]Hi,
Have a question about a number of what I think are going to be Wikipedia:Permastub created by Youndbuckerz (talk · contribs) on American rugby league players - I have suggested to Youndbuckerz that this does not appear to be such a good idea, and since you are both an Admin and have posted about rugby league notability (Wikipedia_talk:Notability (sports)/Archive2#Rugby_League) I would ask your advice on these articles Codf1977 (talk) 10:56, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Youndbuckerz (talk · contribs) informed about this post here Codf1977 (talk) 10:59, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Codf1977. I don't see how these players meet any relevant inclusion criteria: WP:NSPORT or WP:GNG. The US rugby league competition isn't fully professional. If someone is selected for the US national team, that'll probably get them over the line, but mere club football and domestic representative football shouldn't. In my view, the difficulty with creating so many articles about obscure amateur athletes is that over time, not enough people monitor the articles to keep them up to date. In my opinion, an AfD nomination would be in order. --Mkativerata (talk) 18:59, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

- Bloody hell. I'm not a fan of batch AfD nominations but I think it's the only way here. I suggest nominating one of them, and posting a link to this page (or another page) where all of them are listed, and explicitly say that the AfD covers them all. I think a batch nomination is justifiable because the articles are essentially the same. --Mkativerata (talk) 22:30, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- figured you say that - I will do it - and will just add the list as part of the nom text - any thoughts on how to add {{afd1}} to each of the articles ? I have asked for AWB access thinking that might help. Codf1977 (talk) 22:48, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think that's necessary unless you can figure AWB out (I've never used AWB). As long as the creator is aware of the batch nomination. I think a post to wikiproject rugby league would be good as well.--Mkativerata (talk) 22:54, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

- The problem with the article was that it was clearly promotional. It had phrases like "a simple, easy to use tool designed to help you…". To write an article on this product, it will need to be neutral. To be neutral, it needs to be based on reliable sources.-- (talk) 23:30, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

- Hi there - this article was deleted following a discussion where the community agreed to delete it: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bravo (pickup artist). In these discussions, we consider each article on its own merits. The existence of other similar articles is largely irrelevant. In any case, there does appear to be a key difference between Bravo and the other three: the articles on the other three are sourced to multiple reliable sources. Bravo's article wasn't, and no-one in the discussion could find any.--Mkativerata (talk) 20:36, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Paid editing AfDs
[edit]Hi, thanks for the hard work you do around AfD. I see you closed some of my paid editing-related AfDs [2] [3]. I don't have a problem with your evaluation of the consensus at any of these, but I do take issue with the closing statements that assert that paid editing isn't a reason in itself to delete an article. I personally feel that paid editing is a violation of WP:NOT, (and therefore suitable for deletion) and I can imagine a consensus emerging in the future that paid editing is a valid rationale for deletion unless an article can be saved by neutral editors (similar to CSD-G11). This being said, I would appreciate if you didn't make closing statements to the effect that paid editing is allowable de jure since this is a point of contention within the community and could change in the future. Thanks, ThemFromSpace 08:24, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Respectfully, I don't think either of those closes state that paid editing is allowable; rather, they state that paid editing isn't sufficient grounds to delete an article. It's like articles created by socks of indef blocked editors: there's no equivalent to
{{db-banned}}
for indef blocked sock puppeteers, nor for paid editors. Paid editors should be dealt with as editors, not by deleting their articles out of hand. TFOWR 08:52, 1 September 2010 (UTC)- Thanks TFOWR - that's an accurate reading of what I've been saying. Paid editing can give rise to a ground for deletion if, as is often the case, the promotional purpose is reflected in the content of the article (G11). But what if a paid editor creates a perfectly non-promotional article? That gives rise to no basis for deletion. --Mkativerata (talk) 08:56, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
- I should add that evidence of paid editing is certainly a reason to be sceptical of an article. To that end these nominations were far from unjustified. --Mkativerata (talk) 09:21, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your replies, both of you. I read the policy a bit stricter than you but I understand where you're coming from. ThemFromSpace 06:41, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Ain es Saheb airstrike copyright infringement
[edit]Hi Mkativerata,
Although I did not actually create the wikipedia article, I am the person who wrote the page from which the contents were taken. I have absolutely no problem with this and have posted the appropriate message on the article talk page and have written the required email to the wikimedia address specified in the copyright infringement message. Can the previous contents of the page be restored?
thank you, Poliocretes (talk) 07:50, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Poliocretes, thanks very much for the note. I've placed a note on the copyright problems page ([4]). Someone will receive the email and deal with it and if everything is ok the contents will be restored. Unfortunately I can't do it myself because I don't have access to wikimedia's emails but there will be someone who does. --Mkativerata (talk) 19:32, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
Hey
[edit]Why did you delete Tuareg Rebellion (1961-1964)? It's a real conflict. What's your problem? B-Machine (talk) 15:55, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Well, the reason given was
{{db-g12}}
- unambiguous copyright infringement. I'd hazard a guess that that's the reason ;-) Seriously, the article was a word-for-word copy of the website used as the one reference. And "what's your problem?" - not cool. Not likely to get you a response normally. TFOWR 16:47, 3 September 2010 (UTC)- Thanks TFOWR. B-Machine - when your current block expires you're more than welcome to recreate the article. But it can't be restored because it was a blatant copyvio. The deletion summary (Tuareg Rebellion (1961–1964)) tells you exactly why the page was deleted and from where the page had been copied. --Mkativerata (talk) 19:35, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
