Responding to RFCs

Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. See also Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Suggestions for responding.

Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Talk:Jupiter (mythology). Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 backlog elimination drive report

GOCE November 2011 Backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We would like to thank all who participated in this drive. Here is the end-of-drive report.

Participation

There were 48 editors who signed-up for this drive, of which 35 participated. Thank you to everyone who helped reduce the size of the backlog!

Progress report

During the drive, we reduced the backlog by 232 articles, or by about 6%. This is a two percent increase from our September drive, when we copy edited 4% of the backlog. We were successful in our primary goal of clearing the oldest three months—March, April, and May 2010—from the queue. Thanks to all who helped copy edit these difficult articles. Thus far we have reduced the copy edit backlog by 5086 articles, or by about 61%. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

Coordinator election

The term of our second tranche of coordinators has run out, and we will be accepting nominations from December 5, 00:01 UTC to December 15, 23:59 UTC. If you or any other member of the Guild of Copy Editors wishes to be a coordinator, add your name to this page along with a statement describing why you believe you should be a coordinator for the Guild. You must be able to commit to a six month term. Thanks!

Once again, thank you for participating in the Guild's November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Our next drive will be in January, and we hope to see you there!

Your drive coordinators – Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02 and SMasters

@ talk Ariel Roth

If you take a look around you'll see that that is hrafn's MO on the topics dealing with creationism and religion. consider:

-- Mthoodhood (talk) 17:23, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes—I figured that, although his own talk page is benign. I'm no creationist either (and a lapsed Catholic to boot :-)), but he crossed the line. While it's necessary to keep as much misinformation (and disinformation) as possible out of the encyclopedia, those article talk-page posts here and here were an embarrassment. Since they were posted close together in time, though, maybe he was having a bad day. Miniapolis (talk) 17:44, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Sexual exploitation and abuse

Hi Miniapolis: I appreciate the importance of copy editing but I am afraid your change of the of the article title from Sexual exploitation and abuse in humanitarian response to Sexual abuse in humanitarian response should have been discussed before the change. The longer title was chosen on purpose after some discussion as it more accurately reflects the issue and the language used in the humanitarian community. I tried to undo your move before discovering that I could not—I have little experience in moving pages. In the meantime, I have found: “Wikipedia:Moving a page” and see that I cannot just undo the change. It is at least open for discussion if any of the reasons listed for moving apply in this case and I would appreciate it being changed back to the original title. Decimal-commas in numbers from Spanish sources

Thanks for working to copy-edit the complex, older articles during the January WP:GOCE drive. I have updated the article "Taxation in Colombia" to put the thousands separators as being commas, not dots, "1.090" → "1,090". I am not sure about other Spanish-language cultures, but as you probably know, Colombia is one of those that use decimal-commas rather than decimal-point format, where one-half is "0,5" and one thousand is "1.000". The hint I look for in topics about other nations is to check for trailing zeroes in 3-digit decimals, such as "1.090" or "4.100" which have those suspicious end-zeroes with 3 digits, hence: "4,100". The same occurs in Germanic or Italian topics. Also, Google Translate is set to translate decimal commas in Spanish text, so that also provides a hint:

  • English: "The culture was 10,000 years old, over 2,000 years ago."
  • Spanish: "La cultura fue de 10.000 años, más de 2.000 años atrás."

I understand you were in a hurry, due to the extreme complexity of all the articles, so those are some hints to watch quickly for 3-digit decimals with zeroes "x.x00". I hope we'll get most of the really complex old articles finished next time, because if all drives have articles this complicated, I worry that few editors will want to fix such articles each month. Thanks again for helping. -Wikid77 (talk) 04:54, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the correction; I was gaga by the end of the drive (which seemed rougher than others because of the large number of long articles) and couldn't tell if it was an absolute figure or some kind of index or ratio. It was one of those articles not rough enough for a not-English tag, but tough to copyedit because you're not sure of its original meaning :-). Miniapolis (talk) 14:57, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Elections in Croatia

Hi again! I reviewed your copyedits in an attempt to address concerns stated in the hidden text. Two were relatively simple and required clarification, hope that makes sense now. Specifically, the person heading an election list but not necessarily being a candidate on that list situation is as follows: Electoral legislation provides that a party/coalition may nominate lists of 14 candidates each in parliamentary elections and those are the persons which are actually voted for. In addition to those 14 names, there is another name added to the top of the list with a specific title (Nositelj liste, which literally means bearer of the list) to distinguish him/her from the actual candidates. That person's name is intended to symbolize the political party associated with the list and it is normally the party head at the national level, regardless of him/her being actual candidate on that or any other list. For instance, in the last parliamentary elections all HDZ lists were headed by the then prime minister Kosor, but she was, of course, a candidate in one of the constituencies only and her name appeared twice at the list, once as a "nositelj" and once as candidate 1. What's this called in English, if there is a name for it - I simply don't know.

The European Parliament election situation is this: After July 1, 2013 when Croatia is expected to accede to the EU, the 12 Euro MPs will be elected in a special election as MEPs, but no the special elections may only be held more than six months ahead of scheduled 2014 European Parliament elections. This means that the Croatian government has until mid-December 2013 to hold those elections, but the earliest date of the election depends on the day when the ratification process is complete - again, that is expected to be on 1 July 2013, but it is possible that the ratification be delayed in one of 27 existing EU member states, hence the odd formulation.

As far as town vs. municipal councils are concerned - I don't know what to say. In Croatia, municipalities and cities don't overlap, rather counties are divided into cities and municipalities, the latter consisting of anything from a small town to a collection of villages. A city is granted that status (and financial income and responsibilities) as soon as it reaches population of 10,000.

Once again, thanks for the copyedit!--Tomobe03 (talk) 21:23, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

My pleasure, and thanks for the explanations; as an American, I don't know as much about parliamentary democracy as I should (although I think it's a better system of government than republican—American-style—democracy). If there's an English word for Nositelj liste I don't know what it is, but someone better acquainted with parliamentary democracy may understand the concept. Thanks again and all the best, Miniapolis (talk) 02:21, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Thoroughbred article links

Please don't remove links from Thoroughbred horse racing articles as you did with the Lawrence Realization Stakes, Washington, D.C. International Stakes and others without inserting each of them with a Red Links section header and each removed item inserted fully linked in the appropriate sub-section on the article Talk Page as per this example. This also applies in the case of horses/jockeys/trainers/owners such as your removal of the Frank A. Bonsal link in Pilaster (horse). An item such as this would have been linked by an editor to save what in virtually all cases represents a massive amount of work when an article is being created plus it avoids important omissions. Searching Bonsal at Wikipedia is somewhat easy, but James Smith or Hanover etc. is an impossible task. And, if they are bracketed John Smith (jockey), nothing shows. If I may, I suggest only removing a link in this nature if you are absolutely certain that the horse or person in question does not warrant a Wikipedia article. That does help, but when in doubt you can always ask at Wikipedia:WikiProject Thoroughbred racing. Thanks for your cooperation. Hialeah Harry (talk) 01:47, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Sorry; I've been removing red links from what I thought were deleted articles or articles unlikely to be created (usually due to non-notability and/or non-verifiability), but my judgement is far from infallible :-). From now on, I'll certainly leave them alone. All the best, Miniapolis (talk) 17:26, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Potential problem on Microbicides article

Hi Miniapolis. I just saw you've started on the Microbices article. Unfortunately User:Gofigure41 had tagged it with {{GOCEinuse}}, and then copied into their own user space to work on, and then a bot came along and removed it when it hadn't been modified for a day. I've put a note on their talk page too, and will leave you to agree how you want to proceed. Best, --Stfg (talk) 19:40, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

No problem; I'll leave a note on Gofigure41's talk page to continue. There's plenty of articles! :-) Thanks for the heads-up and all the best, Miniapolis (talk) 20:39, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
That's very generous of you. Actually, though, could you hold off on that for an hour or two? I see now that he only made a little start, hasn't edited it for four days, and has moved on to something else. As he is new here, I'd like to try to guide him to things he's more ready for. Thanks. --Stfg (talk) 20:55, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
Sometimes (not often, but sometimes) I'm too efficient for my own good (i.e. I already left him a message :-)). In the meantime, though, I'll start something else; I can always pick up on it if no one else has. It's almost requests-pageworthy: a pretty easy job for almost 3,000 words. Please let me know if he doesn't want to continue the article and all the best, Miniapolis (talk) 21:04, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
Heh, much too efficient :)) As he's busy with another article, please would you take the Microbicides back again, and I'll square it with him. He hadn't got far, in fact. Thanks for your help and understanding. Simon. --Stfg (talk) 21:12, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Done. Thanks for mentoring and all the best, Anne. Miniapolis (talk) 21:16, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Microbicides for sexually transmitted diseases, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Morphology (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
