G12 discussion at WT:CSD
[edit]Hi there. I've started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion about a clause you added to G12. The thread is at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion#G12 needs revising. I'd appreciate it if you could contribute to the discussion and clarify the reasons for the criteria. Apologies if this was covered in a talk page discussion previously. If it was, would you be able to point that out? Thanks. Carcharoth 21:07, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- Just a brief update. The thread is now at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion/Archive 22#G12 needs revising. The criterion was eventually changed, as the edit you made here seemed to miss a few points about how image libraries operate. I hope the changes didn't alter the intent of what you added. Carcharoth 19:42, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
Licensing policy clarifications
[edit]There is also some discussion going on at WT:NFC. I wonder if you would be able to advise on the best way to get clarification of the Foundation Licensing policy? The points I've raised here concern historical images and some mentions I've seen of a deadline. What I've said over there is as follows:
"[What] about this bit of the policy? "Such EDPs must be minimal. Their use, with limited exception, should be to illustrate historically significant events..." - it says right there: "to illustrate historically significant events". [...] Also, I've seen people say that there is a deadline of "March 23, 2008" to sort all this out, but in fact that deadline is currently written as a subclause of point 6. ie. It only applies to projects without an EDP. "For the projects which currently do not have an EDP in place, the following action shall be taken [...] By March 23, 2008, all existing files under an unacceptable license as per the above must either be accepted under an EDP, or shall be deleted." This may just be a mistake in the layout of the Licensing Policy, but if this is so, it needs to be changed and the change widely advertised."
As well as the 'deadline' confusion, my concern is also over historical images. I would be grateful if you could bring these points to the attention of the board if this needs clarification. Carcharoth 19:42, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
Portamento
[edit]Hi there, In a moment of newbie enthusiasm I undertook some sorting out of the portamento (to which you contributed) and glissando pages, and I'm still working out what an anticipation that resolves by step could look like. The only Gauldin book I can find is the 18c one, which only mentions portamento in a long list of nonharmonic tones, so can you tell me 1) how he defines/illustrates it and 2) is this term peculiar to his writing or more general? tia, and all the best Sparafucil 06:50, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Licensing issues related to mugshots
[edit]Can I ask for your assistance in a case that requires a solution to the treatment of mugshots? The issue is that some believe that mugshots belong to the public domain, while the photos fall under fair use, subject to state law. I searched the state statute in this case, but the statute only mentions that mugshots (referred to "booking photographs" in the statute) are "public data," and I did not find references to whether "public data" means "public domain."
I commented on the rationale that another editor proposes as the rationale for deletion on the dispute page for the image. Since the editor proposing deletion claims that the mugshot fails under WP:NFCC #8, others, including me, disagree with this rationale -- the conversation for that issue is also mentioned in the in the Public Records section. My rationale supporting the use of the mugshot under NFCC #8 is also included in this section, and this part of the thread was cross-posted in this section as an addendum to preserve the record in case the image was deleted without someone checking first for resolution of its status.
At one point, this conversation was moved to a related one in the "Public Records" section of the Public Domain talk page where part of the discussion was moved. I also posted in that section what I found in the state statute here. Even an intellectual property attorney weighed in on this conversation.
I've asked for guidance by posting a message on the talk pages for Media copyright questions, but the comment went unanswered. An unrelated conversation about the use of mugshots also went unanswered on this same page. I found no other place with a like situation about the use of mugshots released under a state data act.
I don't know whether editors do not know or not sure about the proper handling of mugshots pertaining to copyright, unsure of their treatment given the release by a state, rather than federal, government. Just asking an opinion from someone who might know so that this issue can be resolved for the image's use in the article. If you're not the person to ask, could you suggest where this issue can be finally resolved? The editor tagged the mugshot for deletion on or after September 9. →Lwalt ♦ talk —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lwalt (talk • contribs) 22:54, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Request release of copyright for mop images other projects
[edit]Hi, my appologies if you already responded to my email (mine got horrible crashed/frozen by the ISP, so not sure if I lost any incoming)
Having merely fixed the "Admin mop.png" image on English Wikipedia (I was not of course the original creator of the image), I've been asked to provide similar "mop" images for use by admins on the sister projects.
I note though that for the original "Admin mop.png" that Angela, as a board member, had to be approached to grant use of the wikipedia logo which is copyrighted and thus not otherwise freely useable under GNU. So I presume similar permission is required for say a "Wiki Commons mop.png", "Wikinews mop.png" , "Wikimedia mop.png" etc from a current serving board member ?
I've drawn up suitable images (slotting the same mop into the project images) and I presume, if acceptable, that these images would go into Commons, rather than each specific project space ? David Ruben Talk 01:52, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Riemann
[edit]Hi Kat!
I was happily talking with Kim, and the subject reached math (which, despite what the title of this section might have made you wonder, I am no expert at -- actually, I kinda have a love/hate relationship with it), and he at some point (somewhere between when I was confessing my inability to understand broadly what a manifold is from the article, and when I cried that "There is no easy introduction to Riemannian geometry. It is generally recommended that one should work in the subject for quite a while to build some geometric intuition, usually by doing enormous amounts of calculations." was a scary sentence to be in the respective article) told me to talk to you, since according to him, you enjoy math. So, here I am. Can you help me? Thanks! :) Waldir talk 19:52, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Gordon Jacob
[edit]A tag has been placed on Gordon Jacob requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.
If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later." You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello, a couple of years ago you made this comment on the talk page of WP:Assume good faith which I really loved:
because I've recently been in a tussle with a couple of users who did exactly that. I recently added a new section "Demonstrate good faith", shortcut WP:DGF, which I think addresses some of the concerns about WP:AGF and its application that have been expressed during the last couple of years on the talk page. (Though the inspiration for it was really the dispute I was involved in.) If you have the time to take a look I would love to hear feedback and please feel free to edit it all you want. --❨Ṩtruthious ℬandersnatch❩ 21:56, 26 April 2008 (UTC) |
- I, in turn, would invite you to review the entirety of the New York Pathological Society article and its aftermath to decide for yourself whether User:Struthious_Bandersnatch has accurately described to you his motivation for making serious changes to the WP:AGF guideline without first attempting to reach consensus. I don't agree with using WP:AGF as a sword, but I think there is a significant difference between that and calling somebody out for their obvious choice not to assume good faith. Fair use rational for historic images.
[edit]Apologies for taking up your valuable time but I noticed a comment here concerning the issue of using historical photographs to illustrate articles about the events those photos depict. The comment being to the effect that in your opinion even a stricter fair-use policy than the current one would allow such images to be used. An article I've edited has an image nominated for deletion, where the image is used in that context. Would you be able to provide a comment that clarifies policy on this matter. Thank you in advance, Justin talk 09:27, 15 August 2008 (UTC).
Hi Mindspill! I built upon your hard work on this topic (Gadsby), and I thought you might want to look at it now, in light of contributors who do not favor my phrasing. If you don't mind, would you point out if I'm taking a wrong path on this? Thank you! JJB 18:57, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

--Pediaknowledge (talk) 20:35, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
