A burrito for you
If I were in San Diego right now I'd buy you a local-style burrito at your favorite place. Thanks for doing what you do on Wikipedia. Cheers! Binksternet (talk) 01:26, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you, Binksternet! I'll bring the guacamole! --MelanieN (talk) 01:35, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!
The Half Barnstar | |
You were an important part of improving Glore Psychiatric Museum, and you did it while enduring a horse whipping. More importantly, you did it with poise and style. In spite of the misguided efforts of some, the article is better than my simple start. I'm looking forward to working with you again soon. Dennis Brown | 2¢ | WER 01:40, 6 July 2014 (UTC) |

- BTW, Dennis - it may have been a hassle, but at least the DYK listing DID induce more than a thousand people to read your article. That's something. Maybe a few of them will even visit the museum - and say "I read about it on Wikipedia!" --MelanieN (talk) 18:52, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- That is true, thanks for the optimistic message :) BTW, when you use a [[User:name]] or {{u|name}} template to ping someone, the software will not read it and ping them UNLESS it also sees four tildes, so if you add it later, you MUST remove your old sig and put in ~~~~ again. The tildes are the trigger to tell it to look for pings. ie: I didn't get the ping. Dennis Brown | 2¢ | WER 22:55, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

- And when you want to mention someone but don't want to trigger the echo notification system, you can use {{noping|username}} template. That template uses a lua script to void the notification. Jim Carter 04:33, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- Then why would you use any kind of coding on the name? Why not just say their name, if you don't want to ping them? --MelanieN (talk) 04:58, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- To avoid confusion. For example there are 12 editor with the name first name, Sarah. If I say "please take a look on the Sarah's userpage" then you will get confuse finding her. To avoid such confusion as well as to link her userpage without notification. We use it like this: Sarah. We also use it on our Editor of the Week project. I used that template to link your userpage without mentioning you, when I nominated you for Editor of the Week. Jim Carter 08:37, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- We use the noping template at WER for the editor of the week, as Jim noted. Or asking for a review on someone and you aren't on an admin board. It isn't used often, but can be handy. In some areas like WP:SPI, the ping templates don't ping them anyway, to prevent notification that isn't manual. Dennis Brown | 2¢ | WER 09:50, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Preston Taylor
Hey Melanie, the article I was working about Preston Taylor is now almost complete. Please take a look here. You will see that there are some red links. Most of the redlinks are notable and I'm planning to start an article about his wife, Georgia Gordon Taylor.
Now I was thinking to take this article for DYK. Currently I'm having three articles on my userspace waiting for you to nominate. Since you already know that DYK is in trouble, and it is not possible to take Preston Taylor article for GA standard. So, what should I do?? Jim Carter 06:01, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Let me think about it - and take a look at your article. Some nominations for DYK do go through easily; they aren't all horrible. --MelanieN (talk) 13:50, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Okay take a look and let me know whenever you decide to nominate. Thanks, Jim Carter 14:36, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Great article! You have really done the research and made an excellent article; he was even more important and interesting than I thought. I tweaked it a little (as I usually do). Here's an idea about DYK: Do you have drafts of any other related articles, such as Greenwood Cemetery or Georgia Taylor? We could do a double DYK if you want to try that. Or maybe it would be better to keep it simple and just do him. --MelanieN (talk) 15:14, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Okay take a look and let me know whenever you decide to nominate. Thanks, Jim Carter 14:36, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- All credit goes to you. I'm just a writer of that article but the idea was given by you. So, in this case you have to add yourself in the credit list. Yes, I have a draft of Greenwood Cemetery (I haven't moved it) It is here. I'm also doing some research work so that I can start article on Georgia Gordon Taylor. BTW, What is double DYK?? Jim Carter 16:54, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- A double DYK is a Did You Know question that references two brand-new articles in one hook. I have only done one double; you can see it here, it's the one about William Walter Leake and John E. Hart. There's no particular merit in doing a double, but it does give you credit for two DYKs at one time. On the other hand, under current circumstances it would mean that both articles would be held to current high standards. The Preston Taylor article would certainly be OK under that kind of scrutiny; I'm not sure about Greenwood Cemetery, which has less sourcing available. Maybe we'd better just stick to Preston Taylor. And since I am not sure Greenwood Cemetery could meet their current criteria, maybe you should consider just moving it to mainspace and not worrying about DYK. That would "blue" one of the redlinks in this article. --MelanieN (talk) 17:13, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- P.S. There could still be a problem with copyvio/close paraphrasing between your article and some of its sources; that is likely to become an issue at DYK. For example, comparing the article to this site. Example: Your article: "Taylor was deeply affected by the exclusion of Black communities from post-war reconstruction projects. Once settled in Mt. Sterling, Taylor secured a contract from the Big Sandy Railway to build sections of track from Mt. Sterling to Richmond." Source: "Deeply affected by the exclusion of Negroes from local Reconstruction projects, Taylor secured a contract to build several sections of the Big Sandy Railway from Mount Sterling to Richmond, Virginia." You might want to do a comparison of the article with the sources and make sure you don't have too much similarity. --MelanieN (talk) 17:25, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- BTW I don't know much about images; since the photo of Preston Taylor given in several of the references is almost certainly from before 1923, does that mean it is public domain? Talk page stalkers, any help with this question? --MelanieN (talk) 17:32, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Although I double checked the draft with respect to there references, it's possible that I overlooked any copyvio issue. Currently I'm out of town with my phone. And today is a very bad day for me. I lost my luggage bags (someone stolen), due to heavy rain trains were delayed by 13 hours, and now I'm sitting in the railway platform with my phone saying "20% charge left". Very bad day for me. Hence I can't compare the draft for few days (I'm not going to have laptop access) so I was wondering if you can do this work. And I don't know about image copyrights, maybe Dennis can help here. Thanks, Jim Carter 18:15, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Anything pre-1923 is automatically PD in the US, thus at Wikipedia. As long as it can be reasonably demonstrated or surmised from the photo itself. Dennis Brown | 2¢ | WER 19:16, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Dennis, that's what I thought. Jim, sorry to hear you are having such a bad day! I'll see what I can do with the article. There's no rush as long as it is still in draft form. --MelanieN (talk) 19:29, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello Melanie, I'm going to take a long wikibreak, for more than 2 years. That means I'm not going to edit for sometime. So, I request you to help improve my draft articles and move it to mainspace. You can take Taylor for DYK if you wish. Many thanks for all you did. God bless, good bye. Your friend, Jim Carter 19:05, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

DYK for United States Custom House (San Ysidro, California)
On 10 July 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article United States Custom House (San Ysidro, California), which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that the historic U.S. Custom House in San Ysidro, San Diego, lies 50 feet (15 m) north of one of the busiest land border crossings in the world? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/United States Custom House (San Ysidro, California). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Unfortunately I completely missed the discussion on the page subsequent to my comment and I don't have permissions for deleted pages. Since nobody has commented
Hi MelanieN. While I have no objection to this edit at Non-apology apology, I do think that you may have been a little quick to make the change. You noted the content was dubious on 14 July and then removed it on 17 July. Bold editing is absolutely allowed and even encouraged. Still, my own practice in such cases is to wait at least a week to see if anyone responds to talk page comments in which I propose removing content. That's not based on policy or consensus; it's just my own practice, developed in response to occasional objections from other editors. You can take that advice for whatever you think it's worth. Happy editing, Cnilep (talk) 23:23, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your input, @Cnilep:. I'm glad to know you don't object to the change, and equally glad to know those articles are on somebody's watchlist. I often do wait a week for reaction, but I don't make it an absolute rule; sometimes if all I hear is crickets I just go ahead and do it. In this case if someone shows up and objects, I will revert (as in BRD) and discuss it with them. --MelanieN (talk) 23:32, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Julián Castro, HUD Secretary
Hi, Without knowing recent history with the move discussion, I asked Drmies about adding the acute accent to Secretary Castro's name. It is a fact that "Julián" is correct. Secretary Castro spells his name with the diacritic; and in my view, the incorrect spelling of his name places Wikipedia in a poor light. Secretary Castro also pronounces his name as one would with the diacritic.
It is apparent that editors have made note of the fact that many periodicals have spelled his name "Julian", and they have used that as justification for maintaining status quo. Many wrongs do not make that right. The HUD website is spelling his name with the diacritic, and the HUD Office of Public Affairs Press Secretary has emailed me to confirm that his name is spelled with the diacritic.
Since you had been involved in the discussion, and presented good thought in support of the move, I would like to ask you for a brief history, and any possible thoughts that you may have concerning accomplishing the addition of the diacritic at this point. Thank you in advance for your thoughts. Doc2234 (talk) 23:47, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

I personally find 42 a useful shortcut, and I think it can be helpful to newbies and people wondering why I am trying to delete their article. --MelanieN (talk) 21:30, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
- P.S. Please also see Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything, where the decision was "snow keep". Some people hate this page, but there was a strong consensus to keep it. --MelanieN (talk) 21:35, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm. No problem I thought you might like to see it, I myself also use to link it at Afd. Btw I already saw that MfD. Anyway, I have a question, Let there be two editors, X editor and Y editor. Both of them were editing and improving an article, X editor thought to change its citation style from {{cite}} to {{Sfn}}. And X editor started changing it being WP:Bold. Suddenly Y editor reverted the change with an edit summary WP:CITEVAR and WP:CONSENSUS. X editor started a thread for consensus at it's talk page. Y editor was having a disagreement with X editor. Although the article looks like a mess and have heavy citation clutter with {{Cite}} but still Y editor supported using {{Cite}} with reasons like, Newbies will not understand how {{Sfn}} works. Suddenly another newbie came in and supported editor X. Y editor almost confused and can't handle the situation, he left messages at two admins talk page (Both the admins were good friends of Y editor) and started calling them at the articles talk page for discussion although both the admins have no relation with the article (never have edited that page). Y editor explained one of the admin at the admins talk page that X editor is an inexperienced newbie (X editor helped 1 article to meet GA, 1 article to meet FL and have started 3 DYKs). One of the admin came and took the side of Y editor and accused X editor for WP:BATTLE. I have tried my best to explain the case, now the question arises who is correct, X editor or Y editor?? Didn't Y editor actually canvassed when he called those unrelated admins (admin interven was not required)?? Is it correct to call X editor inexperienced newbie when he have done some good works like DYK, FL, GA?? Did X editor used common sense??
- Okay. Btw I saw your comment at one of the current Afd. I saw you mentioned a link to WP:42. Don't forget to see WP:NOT42 and talk page of 42. Regards, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:39, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the invitation, but I think I'll pass. I'm not very fond of organized, let's-all-do-this approaches and edit-a-thons and such. I like to find my own "articles for improvement". But enjoy! --MelanieN (talk) 17:44, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
I would like to know the answers, Thanks, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 06:27, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- Wow, that's hard to follow. I assume you are talking about an actual situation, but I can't evaluate it without seeing the actual case. But the bottom line is that both styles, "cite" and "sfn", are equally acceptable here. I gather that the article was originally written in "cite" style. Editor X prefers "sfn" style and changed it; that was BOLD. Someone else objected and changed it back; that was REVERT. Time to DISCUSS, but I don't really see what there is to discuss. If there is no consensus to change to "sfn" style, IMO it should remain in the style which the original author of the page used, which in this case was "cite". Again: Wikipedia has no preference for one style over the other. It's unfortunate that someone personalized the decision by talking about the editor instead of the article, but I wouldn't make a federal case out of that; sometimes we have to have a bit of a thick skin here. This may not be the answer you were hoping for, but IMO it's time for editor X to drop it and move on. --MelanieN (talk) 09:01, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- OK, I found the discussion you are talking about. There was nothing wrong with bringing some well respected admins into the discussion, and they all said pretty much the same thing: that either style is acceptable, and you are wrong to try to insist on "sfn". Personally I don't like the sfn style, I prefer cite, but that's beside the point; either is acceptable. My opinion remains: time to move on. And also, in the future, you should not insist on the sfn style if others object to it. BTW don't be offended by people thinking you are a newbie; on this "public" account you look like one - here less than two months, only 600 edits. Remember, a search of your contributions only shows your "public" account; it doesn't show all the stuff you did under your original account. So the description was not accurate, but it was understandable, and not worth getting upset over.
- I'm glad you asked me about this. You know that I will always give you my honest opinion, even if it is not what you want to hear - and you also know that I am your friend. --MelanieN (talk) 09:14, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Main Quad (Stanford University)
On 18 August 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Main Quad (Stanford University), which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the inner part of Stanford University's Main Quad is surrounded by twelve buildings, numbered 1 through 110? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Main Quad (Stanford University). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

So what did you study at Stanford?
Wondering what it was like. I visited the campus in 2012 and took lots of photos but did not know enough to write descriptive captions.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 18:38, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
- I majored in chemistry - with a minor in German. It was (and is) a pretty amazing place! I could help with captions, or if I can't, Erp could. We have a number of articles that could use photos, including a brand new article about the Main Quad that just came off DYK. Thanks for asking! --MelanieN (talk) 19:35, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
- Cool. If I come across a chemistry-related subject, I may ask you, or if your knowledge of German can help, I may do that too. Btw RG has responded to me via email, we may have photos soon for her article.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 11:23, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
- Great! I'm clueless about photos, so if you know how to upload them to Wikipedia's satisfaction that could be very useful. We could make a good team here! Although I have to warn you my knowledge of German has gotten pretty rusty. I'd never try to translate an article, for instance. --MelanieN (talk) 14:46, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
- RG thanked you and me both in an email to me for rescuing her article, plus she sent photos which I uploaded. If you have any photos for Wikipedia, I can share what I do and what has worked in the past, and I have a rudimentary understanding of the copyright-related rules regarding photos, plus a method to get permission when the photos come from another source, if interested. Also, with these constantly improving automatic translation tools, like Google's, it may well be that in ten years time, we don't need to master other languages.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 13:41, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

- One major problem is gender. English has 'he' for males, 'she' for females, railway engines (even one named 'King George V'), some cars and all ships, and 'it' for things not regarded as he or she, often including indeterminate children and animals. French has 'il' and 'elle'. A six foot six, black bearded and built like a brick outhouse fighter is male. When on sentry duty, he is 'la sentinelle' and is feminine. German has 'er', 'sie' and 'es'. Sometimes these match physical gender, but young girls are apparently neuter. I can't recall any males that become feminine. Japanese seems to turn everything into 'it'. Google has great trouble with Spanish in this respect, and I've seen a male actor referred to as 'he', 'she' and 'it' in the course of one translation. Peridon (talk) 18:04, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, Mark Twain had some fun with that: The Awful German Language Of course we have a problem in English, and especially here at Wikipedia, with people of indeterminate gender. Do we say "they", or "he/she", or "s/he", or do we succumb to the ever present WP:Systemic bias and call everyone "he" unless they are specifically flagged as female? --MelanieN (talk) 18:30, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Clarification
The second one was User:Chiesco/DRAFT, not the mess that's at the bottom of the page now. This stands a vague chance, while the Messiah at the bottom stands as much chance as a snowball in the Saraha. Or even the Sahara. Confusion rains.... 8-( Peridon (talk) 17:13, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Declara entry
Hi MelanieN, Per your suggestions, I created the article draft for Declara under User:Ottomunaiz/Draft. Can you please review and let met know if I need to revise it in any way. Also, I had a question about uploading the company logo to the info box that appears to the right of the article. I have been provided the logo from Declara to use for the purpose of adding to the Wikipedia page. Do you need some sort of authorization or documentation, because the options that came up when I tried to upload the image to Wikipedia suggested as much. Not sure how to do this. I'd appreciate any guidance you can provide. Thanks, Ottomunaiz. Ottomunaiz (talk) 13:28, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
- Replied at your talk page. --MelanieN (talk) 16:25, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
A cup of coffee for you!
Thanks for nominating Ken Getz for deletion. I made that article and I regret doing it because it does not meet inclusion criteria. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:16, 27 August 2014 (UTC) |
- Thanks for the coffee and the gracious acknowledgement, Blue Rasberry! I might never have noticed it, except that Ken Getz himself has been trying to get one of his employees to insert a resume-style page in place of the encyclopedic entry you made. Those additions were all promptly deleted, but it made me wonder if the subject was even notable. --MelanieN (talk) 16:24, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
- I made the mistake because I am biased as a fan of his work. I read his papers and books and have heard him present, and somehow when I wrote the article I must have wanted the Wikipedia entry to exist even though now I clearly see he does not meet notability criteria. I am always surprised to see how stepping back and letting some time pass makes my own biases obvious, even though I try to be objective. I know completely well that the article is inappropriate and I am not sure what I was thinking at the time. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:28, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
YGM
YGM Jim Carter (from public cyber) 15:59, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi, Melanie. I think you probably agree that University Business School – Chandigarh, that you removed my PROD on, is a very bad article, even though it was a lot worse before I hacked away at it a couple of days ago. It has had a multiple issues template, a COI template and a cleanup template on it since 2011, all of them completely ignored until I happened along. PROD seems to be the only thing that gets any kind of improvement going. (Compare these comments, on my page, about another Indian article I prodded.) May I ask if you're planning to merge the article yourself? Because if not, I don't know that you've helped it much by adding yet another template for people to ignore. Bishonen | talk 19:21, 3 September 2014 (UTC).
- P.S. I happened to notice you liked my silly "essay" Do not say "With all due respect", hehe. Thank you. Bishonen | talk 19:23, 3 September 2014 (UTC).
- Hi, Bishonen. Yes, I have the article on my watchlist and plan to carry out both proposed mergers in a week. You are right, sometimes it takes a PROD or an AfD to call bad articles to people's attention. I pride myself on the articles I have "rescued" (this isn't one of them), but I would never have found them to rescue, if somebody hadn't tagged them. --MelanieN (talk) 21:10, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi Melanie - just wanted to let you know about a new SD neighborhood article I wrote. Feel free to jump in with edits, or just admire it... :) Dohn joe (talk) 16:58, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks - interesting article and very nicely done! So is the article's name going to have to be changed to East Elliott, Santee, California? What is the status of that annexation?
- I am also left wondering - why did the city decide to off-load this area? Was it because that was the only way to get rid of the "open space" designation? Don't we have some kind of law against developing areas that have been designated as open space? These are just questions for my own curiosity, I doubt if any of that could go into the article.
- BTW a project for either you or me, whoever gets to it first: expand the article Multiple Species Conservation Program, currently an unreferenced stub.--MelanieN (talk) 17:12, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Melanie. No, only the development will be transferred to Santee; the rest of East Elliott stays in San Diego. I also wonder about the decision to develop. The zoning allowed for it, but it never made sense because it was inaccessible from the rest of the city's services. It would have made more sense if Santee wanted the development, because it is literally adjacent to Santee neighborhoods. But it sounds like Santee was against the development. San Diego allowed development, but won't get the property tax revenue, and Santee didn't want it in the first place. Doesn't make sense to me (other than follow the money, I'm sure...). Dohn joe (talk) 17:47, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
San Diego breweries
Hi - So, I'm confused... why did you remove the entry for Belching Beaver? It had a reference, and it's a reference to a source that's been used to support several other entries. Is there some reason you think that particular article is not be relied on? I assure you, the brewery does exist. In fact, it's got at least two locations, you can find their beers in pretty much any decent beer bar in town, and it's gotten a fair bit of coverage in the area's beer press. Seems pretty notable to me. Could you elaborate on your objection to including it on the list? (NB: I have no connection to Belching Brewery, other than as an occasional customer). --Rmalouf (talk) 20:22, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note. I replied at Talk:List of breweries in San Diego County, California. --MelanieN (talk) 23:16, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
New idea
Hey I noticed we don't have article on San Diego History Center museum. Is it notable enough for an article?? Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:49, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
- I have wondered about that. I once searched under its former name, San Diego Historical Society, and didn't find much. I'm in the middle of creating an article right now (about a famous physician, I like writing about physicians) but I could take a look a little later. --MelanieN (talk) 20:55, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
- I did a little searching. I'm not sure there's enough material ABOUT this museum/society to pass WP:ORG. I found just one significant article, about a librarian there. Otherwise there are a lot of passing mentions, and there are things they publish themselves, but I suspect it's not ready for an article. Thanks for the thought! --MelanieN (talk) 23:58, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

AfD closing script
The most popular script is Mr.Z-man's close AFD. To install that script. Go here. Paste the following code:
importScript('User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD.js');
And save the page. After saving, if you use Internet Explorer, press Ctrl and Refresh. If you use Firefox press Ctrl+Shift+R. For Google chrome and Safari just click reload. Congrats! the script is installed, now test it by going at any Afd discussion page. Click on the tab "More" at the top of the page and you will see two new options, "relist" and "close Afd".
I have also created a script that does the same work but the code it use are far more updated than of Mr.Z-man's script and most of the bugs are fixed.
To install my script, just do the same thing as mentioned above but instead of that code use:
importScript('User:Jim Cartar/AfD closer.js');
This one. If you face any trouble installing the script, just let me know. Thanks, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 18:47, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
Re: ANI thread
The IP 107.133.164.7 now plans to go ahead with that legal threat. I'd suggest pursuing any admin action immediately, including reporting this user to WP:AIV. Thank you, Epicgenius (talk) 15:21, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads-up, but don't you think the ANI notice is enough? It seems like a pretty clear cut case for a block, but it isn't exactly vandalism. --MelanieN (talk) 15:26, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not suggesting to report the user for vandalism; I am suggesting it for continuing legal threats after a user warning. Epicgenius (talk) 15:27, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
- They have been blocked for a week. Actually the block for a legal threat is supposed to be indefinite (until the threat is withdrawn), but you can't indef an IP. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on this. --MelanieN (talk) 15:32, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

cite request for mayor's name
Thank you for providing the cite. I agree that such information is not difficult to find for us wikipedians. The value in this case is related to the fact that (if Escondido is like most other California cities) the mayor changes every year or so. Unless the article is actively maintained, the information will be incorrect within 12 months. Because of this, it is important to make it as easy as possible for users to verify that the information is up-to-date. Best regards, —Stepheng3 (talk) 17:30, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Stepheng3: Most cities? I am aware of some cities where the "mayor" is chosen annually from among the members of the city council, but I think that is an unusual system for California. In most California cities - including all of the big cities (LA, SF, San Diego, San Jose, Sacramento, Fresno, Long Beach, Chula Vista, Escondido, Oceanside) - the mayor is independently elected at-large and serves a (usually) 4-year term. But anyhow, it never hurts to have information verified here. --MelanieN (talk) 17:51, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
- Perhaps I was mistaken about "most". I haven't actually done a survey of all 482 municipalities. Cheers,—Stepheng3 (talk) 18:01, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Teiosha George
Sorry I didn't realize i did something wrong i'm sorry iuuxx3 (talk) 23:30, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Iuuxx3: You didn't do anything wrong, and don't apologize. You created an article, and you didn't know about Wikipedia's criteria for having an article here. You can find those rules at WP:NCOLLATH. College athletes usually don't qualify, unless they win a major award or turn pro. I'm afraid the article about Teiosha George is probably not going to qualify for an article here. But I have moved it to a place where more people, not just me, will look at it and decide. You are welcome to comment at that discussion if you want, it is here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Teiosha George. And don't let this discourage you; just learn about our notability criteria and keep writing! --MelanieN (talk) 05:27, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
Gender and Sustainability
→Hello MelanieN,
Thanks for your advice. What I actually wanted to do was to create a heading page to which my students can link their individual articles. The main article would then be Gender and Sustainability and the students' articles would all fit within that broad topic. Do you know any way to make such a network and put in place before actually publishing it? Is it possible to link different articles to each other when they are still in different authors sandboxes? What I want to create is some sort of structure that the students can use during the course work. Or is this impossible and instead we all have to write our different articles, publish them and after that link them to each other? I would be grateful for any advices you can give me.

- @Karin Steen: Thanks for your note. I can't help you, but I will find someone who can. Wikipedia has a program called the Campus Ambassadors, to help teachers use Wikipedia as part of their teaching. I'm not part of this program myself but I will try to find someone who can help you. They will get in touch with you about how to proceed. Thanks for your interest in Wikipedia! --MelanieN (talk) 15:04, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Re: DYK nomination of Ture Malmgren
Hello! Thanks for the help with the nomination rewording. Language can be a bit of a barrier sometimes. As for sourcing, my apologies. The best source would probably be 100 år med Bohusläningen: Glimtar ur vår bygds historia 1878-1978 by Wilhelm Hansson, Eric Jonsson and Sven Lidman from 1979 (published by Bohusläningen AB), page 204. Would you mind helping me with that bit too? Stamboliyski (talk) 16:48, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion contested: New Market Mall
Hello MelanieN. I am just letting you know that I contested the speedy deletion of New Market Mall, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not unambiguously promotional. Thank you. Eastmain (talk • contribs) 21:39, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Raj Hath
On 3 October 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Raj Hath, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that in the 1956 Hindi film Raj Hath (Royal stubbornness), the prominent actress Madhubala dressed up as a man? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Raj Hath. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

That is quite true. Wikipedia is not censored. We have articles about all kinds of things, as long as the subject is noteworthy. They are sober scholarly articles, but sometimes the illustrations can be pretty graphic. Children and school classes should not use the internet without supervision. That includes Wikipedia. --MelanieN (talk) 01:39, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but I think saying children and school clases shall not use wikipedia is naive at best. Is there a way to complain officialy ? --Nibbla (talk) 10:42, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- User:Nibbla, what is it that you want Wikipedia to do differently? Do you want Wikipedia to not include any material that could be offensive to some people? Or to have "adult" and "child" sections? I don't think that is practical. The solution is for parents, schools, libraries, etc. to install parental controls at their end. This is not a perfect solution - for example, a child trying to learn about breast cancer may find that the parental controls block access to any internet site containing the word "breast". But it's better than changing the world's most widely used encyclopedia into a censored website fit for children. Also, parental controls leave it up to the individual parent or school to decide what children should and should not see. Wikipedia can't decide that for everybody else. --MelanieN (talk) 13:57, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

The Art of Dialling
The Art of Dialling will be a notable book article after some serious effort by me, and at that point you can go to an AfD if you like. Here is why I am working on this article:
- Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers is my first reason.
- I am definitely a booklover.
- I am definitely interested in books on navigation.
- I am definitely interested in books on timekeeping.
Yes, notability is going to be a challenge, but I am a seasoned Wikipedian, and ready for the challenge. --DThomsen8 (talk) 14:12, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note, User:Dthomsen8. I'm sorry, but minutes before you wrote this, I renominated the article for speedy deletion, this time under WP:G12. I discovered that the entire article (except for the sentence you added) is copied verbatim from the Christie's catalog. Wikipedia is very strict about copyright violation, so this article cannot be allowed to remain here for any length of time in its present condition. If you want to start from scratch and write an article about this book and then re-submit it, it might well turn out to be notable, but copyvio is a strong no-no. --MelanieN (talk) 14:21, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
- I guess what you could do if you really want to save THIS article is to delete the two copyvio paragraphs and replace them with a single topic sentence. In other words stubify it, and work from there. --MelanieN (talk) 14:32, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
- Oops, too late. I knew they were quick to get rid of copyvio but that must set some kind of record. I'm sorry. I hope you will still write an article about the book. --MelanieN (talk) 14:35, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
- Explain to me how the title of a book published in 1671 can be copyrighted by Southbys or the University of Michigan or anybody else. It seems to me that the title has been in the public domain for several centuries.--DThomsen8 (talk) 14:40, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
- @Dthomsen8: The first paragraph - the string of antique English that confused me so, for lack of any context - that would be OK provided it is in quotes or italics and is placed in context as the title or description of a book. The second paragraph - no way, it was a direct copy-paste from the Christie's catalog.
I wish I had seen your note before I tagged it; I couldn't leave the copyvio paragraphs, but I might have stubified the article (if that alternative had occurred to me in time). Thanks for reaching out to the original author, this must have been very confusing for them. --MelanieN (talk) 18:23, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Adnan Sami
Dear Ms. Melanie, Thank you for your message. It baffles me to see that an article with so many contradictions within the contents of its own "approved" article can be allowed to remain as 'Authentic' & one which is closer to the simple mathematics of the date lines suggested by the discography is thrown out by you! For starters, the article "Approved" by you states that Mr. Sami started his career in 2006 - present & you go down the same article on to the discography & you see that his first album was released in 1990!!! You call this 'Authentic' and equate this to an "Encyclopaedia" standard?? The initial page was started up using information by a 'fan' who had started an unauthorised website under the URL www.adnansamikhan.com where they wrote whatever superficial knowledge they had.. Initially that info was picked up & incorporated into this page.. It is extremely disturbing that you are allowing basic facts to be disallowed & choosing to go for 'here-say' information. When a journalist comes to Mr. Sami & says, "Sir, I have researched much about you.. I went on to wikipedia.." he responds with "Oh Lord, if THAT is your research then you know NOTHING about me!!!" Sad isn't it.. A far cry from your equating it to an "Encyclopaedia' status. Indeed, in most cases, the pages of other people on wikipedia are started up by responsible individuals who plant seeds onto the page with authenticity & command on the subject. In Mr. Sami's case, it was started off by people who knew little of the facts & then they became facts.. They say that if you repeat a lie long enough, you start believing it to be the truth!! Nothing seems to be more true in this context! Agreed, that there may be some bloated adjectives used to describe an achievement, but every single word regarding his background & family heritage & legacy is as authentic as it can ever get. These points are those which you will never find in 'gossip' magazines etc since they are dry truths. The tragedy is that many things that have been picked up from gossip magazines as so called 'truths' are being projected here as authentic!! Please do not allow this to happen.. The article I have proposed is absolutely genuine with facts. Please remove any sensation you may feel is there, but kindly understand that is the truth and nothing but the truth of Mr. Sami's biography thus far. Its a shame that he is being denied his rightful heritage & biographical facts by wikipedia as it should be stated! The same is happening with his late Father Mr. Arshad Sami Khan. With his father, we have stated his forefather's linage from Afghanistan etc... You have deleted that! You are now going to stand as being the authority to deny him his linage? You want an article to prove it? Which newspaper can you dig out from 1925 which will talk about his linage for you to accept this as being the truth? "Let them have cake!".... This was stated by the Queen of France; Do you have any written proof that she in fact said that apart from it taken from a quote of a book written by Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions? NO! So, just because he wrote it in a book of his own, you think it is authentic & thus it is 'Wikipedia' worthy... What if she did not say this? What if she suddenly came out of her grave & removed from Wikipedia saying "I am Marie Antoinette & I never said this" & she deletes it from Wikipedia... Are you also going to say to her "NO! YOU ARE WRONG... You have no proof that you did not say this... we have a book written by a 3rd party and since he wrote that first and it was not challenged for centuries, to hell with you and your authenticity!!!???" It just doesn't make sense! There has got to be a better way... You cannot play with peoples lives like this and allow a free for all to put things in like this & deny the truth by the person concerned himself... That means that wikipedia stands for "Your Biography as seen by other people & their opinions regardless of the truth!!"... And you are going to hold 'News Paper' articles as your authority to authenticate the genuinity of a piece of information.. Surely you cannot be so naive into thinking that newspaper articles are manipulated at times, bought at times & also written with certain bias as well'! Please do some thing. This is just too tragic and unfair.. Yours Truly Peter Downings
- @Peter Downings: Thank you for your note. I understand your passion and your frustration. I would also like to fix any errors. The problem is that you have been trying to fix these things the wrong way. You keep insisting on your own version of the full article. That is the wrong approach, and if you do it again it is likely to get you blocked from editing.
Please READ AGAIN what I wrote on your page, about the right way to get any errors in the two pages corrected. I wrote to you in hopes that you would finally understand how to fix these things. DON'T keep pasting in your own version of the full article, complete with things we can't have here, such as puffery like "world renowned", "smash hit", etc., as well as things we cannot prove by outside sources. Stop ranting about how you are right and others are wrong. That is getting you nowhere. Instead, post on the article's talk page with specific things that you want to have fixed in the article. Believe me, if those are genuine errors we WILL fix them. We want the article to be right.
Give it a try. Pick one thing, ONE THING, that you would like to have corrected in the article. Put a note on the article's talk page simly saying "XXX should be corrected to YYY, and here is why". No arguing, no telling us about how upset Mr. Sami is or how important he is. Just tell us one thing that needs to be corrected. --MelanieN (talk) 18:44, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
Article you might be interested
Hey Melanie, I found an article related to San Diego. It is San Diego University for Integrative Studies. The article was created by a COI editor and was previously tagged with {{COI}} and {{Advert}} since 2009. I have removed most of the advert and stuffs that can be challegened. Now, I don't know about it's notability. So, I thought if you can improve it (if notable) or take it to Afd (if totally non notable). Thanks. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:53, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
- @Jim Carter - Public: Thanks for cleaning up the article. I was able to verify that the school exists but that's about all. However, I will not be taking it to AfD, even though it is a small university that does not meet GNG. The consensus at WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES is that degree-granting and diploma-granting instututions (in other words colleges and high schools) are presumed notable and are kept. --MelanieN (talk) 22:49, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Help me
I am brand new to Wikipedia and have been trying to build the page for Spot 6 Management Originally I thought I created 2 pages, one as "Spot 6 management" and "Spot 6 Management" so I marked one for deletion but it was an error, so I deleted the tag because I realized my error, I did not realize I could not do that so I apologize. That said, I see that my page is being flagged as Spam or as advertising or promotional and not notable or encyclopedic. I have read all the guidelines and reviewed the short summary for Spot 6 Management but cannot see which sentences or statements are causing the issue and no one is providing any specific details, just general statements that it violates conduct. I do not want to violate and want to fix whatever does not comply but I honestly have no clue what parts are not in compliance. As far as I know, since I know this company well, it is factual summary but please help. Thanks Smatyasfalvi (talk) 01:23, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
- @Smatyasfalvi: Thanks for coming here to talk about it. I realize that Wikipedia can be confusing, and we Wikipedians don't always explain things well. We tend to use "spam" as a shortcut, not just for articles about businesses that are pure advertising, but also for articles about businesses that do not meet our criteria for inclusion. Those criteria are found here: WP:CORP. The key requirement is that the company has received significant coverage from independent reliable sources. That means that outside sources like newspapers have written ABOUT the company, showing that it is notable, which basically means famous. Things like the company's own web page, press releases, and so on do not count - and that's all you have in your article, web page and press releases. Having a famous client or two does not count toward notability. Unless your company is being written about significantly by reliable sources, it just can't have an article here.
I know you mean well and it is hard to be told this. But Wikipedia is an international encyclopedia, and there have to be standards; we can't just have an article about every business in the world. So here is what I have done: I have changed it from "speedy deletion" where it could be gone at any time, to "proposed deletion" where it will stay live for a week. If you can find some independent sourcing about the company, let me know and I will help you add it to the article. If you can't, it will likely be deleted after seven days. --MelanieN (talk) 01:35, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
I appreciate the feedback. I guess famous is subjective but would the following mentions of the company be helpful or enough to support a Wikipedia page? http://www.fashionmodeldirectory.com/agencies/spot-6-management-toronto/ (directory of agencies in modelling) http://www.modelresource.ca/Agencies/ON/spot_6.shtml (another directory) This article is in one of Canada's largest newspapers: http://www.thestar.com/life/fashion_style/2012/03/07/hollands_next_top_model_deemed_too_fat_wins_suit_against_elite_agency.html Another article about the company specifically: http://fashionmagnet.ca/2010/02/11/spot-6-management-turns-1-today/ An article about one of the featured models from this company: http://www.focusproduction.ca/commercial/fashion-editorial-on-the-high-seas-feature-alejandra-spot-6-management-toronto/ More about a model from Spot 6: http://blog.lonewolfmag.com/canadian-models-rocking-our-world/ More work featured about another model from the company: http://blowe.ca/she-passes-the-time/ One of the top models from Spot 6 Management featured on the cover of Canada's largest fashion magazine: http://www.ellecanada.com/blog/2014/02/09/meet-logan-patterson-our-fall-2014-fashion-month-model-correspondent/ Thanks so much for helping me — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smatyasfalvi (talk • contribs) 01:55, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

- @Smatyasfalvi: Oops! The article got deleted. I don't know how that happened. Probably somebody changed the tag back to "speedy deletion". Anyhow I have had a look at the references you found. Two of them are from what we call Reliable Sources: The Star and Elle. But they are not ABOUT the company. The Star item merely quotes the director, and the Elle item doesn't mention the company at all. The anniversary mention in a trade magazine doesn't do much, and the rest are about clients, not the company - as well as being from non-reliable sources like blogs. These references do not add up to "significant coverage about the company from independent reliable sources" and I'm afraid the company would not qualify for an article here. Don't feel bad; actually very few agencies or agents qualify, only the very biggest or most famous. That's because the media never seem to write about the agencies; they write about the clients instead. Sorry! One thing you could do, is to add a sentence (sourced) to articles about clients, stating that Spot 6 is their agency. --MelanieN (talk) 14:12, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

My read of the edit history at this article indicates that ALL of the editors involved in the thread on "allegations of inappropriate sexuality" edited the article without prior notification or approval in Talk. I'm curious as to your rationale for calling me out specifically on it.CFredkin (talk) 21:35, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
- That's a valid question. It's because you were the only one that did it after I became involved, but that's not a valid reason. - Life gets in the way of Wikipedia, I'm afraid. When I returned this a.m. I noticed that my request for dispute resolution should have been referred instead to the COI Noticeboard. Checking that, I discovered that CFredkin has been blocked for his or her massive deletions on the Alison Lundergan Grimes article. Apparently this editor has been chronically engaged in disputes over contentious editing of candidate pages and previous sockpuppetry. I'll return to the DeMaio page and digest what's gone on in my absence. I'm something of a novice to the process of administrative resolution of disputes, so this will take a bit of working through. I have no idea how to correctly respond
Hi, Melanie. I have no idea how to correctly respond on the San Diego High School issue you asked about, so I'll try here. I was a deputy/chief deputy city attorney in San Diego from 1969 to 1997. In 1972, I wrote a legal opinion that San Diego High School was clearly encroaching, in total, on dedicated Balboa Park land. The encroachment began in the 1880's when the park land had been deeded in fee to the City, but before the park was officially dedicated. A 1903 California Supreme Court case specifically held that a public school was an illegal use of park land. Because of the equities involved, the City was amenable to a deal where the school could be rebuilt with already approved bond funds, but only under a 50 year free lease. At the expiration of the lease, the school agreed that it would relocate out of the park. What else do you need to know? I don't know, or care, what a "tilde" is. <redacted> — Preceding unsigned comment added by Balboaparkfan (talk • contribs) 01:23, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response. So you based your addition on personal knowledge, or as Wikipedia calls it, original research. If that was all we had, we wouldn't be able to use it. But luckily I did find some confirmation so I'll see what I can do to restore the information. Did you happen to save any paperwork from that time? I suppose not, it was so long ago. Too long ago for the U-T archives, I think. Anyhow, the information is clearly true and I will restore as much of it as I can. It's a valuable addition to the article.
- A "tilde" is that little squiggle above the n in "señor". It's on your keyboard as the capital of the upper left key, next to the "1". If you type four of them like this ~~~~, then Wikipedia automatically makes it into a datestamp and signature, like this: MelanieN (talk) 04:02, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is full of little tricks like this; stick around and you'll learn them. This can be a fun place to edit, and we can certainly use some help in the Balboa Park articles. Some of the museum articles in particular need a lot of work. --MelanieN (talk) 04:10, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- Let me understand a couple of things. 1) The reason the City Attorney looked at it in 1972: was that because of the plan to demolish and rebuild the school (which I'm guessing was part of the statewide retirement for earthquake retrofitting)? 2) And the two-thirds vote that would allow the school to stay there: what would the two-thirds vote actually do? Would it un-dedicate the land as park land, or what? Thanks. --MelanieN (talk) 09:37, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Enjoy your respite
Sorry that you'll be leaving for a couple of weeks. I've found your comments invaluable, even though I don't agree with all of them. You are certainly a moderating influence in a very frustrating process. At CFredkin's urging, I did go to a Noticeboard to report the problem. I hope I did that right. I'm a novice at this, though I've been editing Wikipedia for six years. The #*)#* interactive form repeatedly gave me a "wrong token" message after I'd written a couple thousand words. I finally gave up and completely redid it, and it worked, causing me to discover my original error. I had noted the disputed article as "Carl DeMaio" instead of "Carl_DeMaio." My laptop has had increasing nasty problems as well, causing me to lose work, having to redo edits, losing bookmarks for articles (not Wikipedia) on which I've been working. Very frustrating. Have a good "vacation." Write if you find work. :-) Activist (talk) 06:05, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
- @Activist: You must be thinking of someone else; I haven't said anything about a vacation. As for CFredkin, you should stop trying to personalize your editing disputes. Just focus on the content. And realize that Wikipedia is based on consensus and on sources - not on your own views however passionate. --MelanieN (talk) 14:53, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
Sorry. Thought you noted that you'd be gone for a couple of weeks, sans explanation. I'll have to see who wrote that. I'm glad you'll still be around. !Activist (talk) 18:24, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
San Diego High School-Balboa Park
Thank you for your comments, your research is great. All I can say is I wrote the City Attorney's legal opinion in 1973, which resulted in the lease in 1974. With your research ability. I bet you can find the 1903 Cal Sup Ct case on schools in parks in quick order. With your present research re "squatters" "lease" etc, I think it's clear enough that they are in the park, and that my comments were accurate. I don't intend to suggest any more corrections to Wikipedia. I'm just in the process of making interested parties aware of the lease expiring in 2024, and the lack of any action at all by the school district to plan for relocation or perform its obligation to relocate out of the park, which was its agreed consideration for the free, 50 yr lease. Thanks again. balboaparkfan ( I don't see any tilde option on this keyboard...)98.176.135.234 (talk) 16:53, 15 October 2014 (UTC) oh
- Somebody already did the research! It's at Talk:San Diego High School. They found several newspaper articles acknowledging the lease and the fact that it expires in 2024. Apparently this is not quite as forgotten as you thought. --MelanieN (talk) 18:21, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

October 2014
You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Alison Lundergan Grimes. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.
Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:
- Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
- Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. -- WV ● ✉ ✓ 15:05, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, WV, it is inappropriate for you to give me a 3RR warning when I have only reverted twice. Also rather surprising, coming from someone who just now showed up at that article and has never been reverted by me.--MelanieN (talk) 16:22, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
- Not inappropriate at all. The warning isn't saying you violated 3RR. You were exhibiting edit warring behavior, with no indication you would not go to 3RR. If you had, a 3RR warning would have been placed here, as well. -- WV ● ✉ ✓ 16:25, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
- Two reverts is about par for that article, although I notice you didn't issue edit warring notices to anyone else. Two reverts is not edit warring behavior in anyone's book. Especially when I was trying in vain to get the others to discuss it at the talk page. And I didn't need to be templated to realize that I should not revert a third time. --MelanieN (talk) 16:32, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

- Pointing out again that the warning was not about 3RR, it was about the edit warring behavior you exhibited. And, if you want to get nitpicky (which you clearly seem wont to do), it was FCAYS who started the thread regarding all of the reverting and edit warring (along with the lack of appropriate edit summaries). In that thread, you personally attacked me. You're doing it again now. I asked you to explain in that discussion thread, you have yet to give a response. -- WV ● ✉ ✓ 16:41, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

- Question — Melanie, regarding your comment that "isn't it convenient that someone new showed up to restore the material just as Factchecker/Centrify was unable to do so!"
- Did you somehow think that excluding an editor from the editing process was also going to eliminate the content dispute? Centrify (f / k / a FCAYS) (talk) (contribs) 16:44, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
- I have been at Wikipedia far too long to think anything like that. The current article is a fine example. --MelanieN (talk) 16:57, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

for looking at things I dump on you. I nearly dumped Egumball (what a name!) on you, but just in time found you'd already looked into it. (I've been sorting the author's account out. He/she is now User:AlexisGCA.) Peridon (talk) 21:25, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
- I always enjoy your referrals. BTW I will be on an extended Wikibreak for three weeks, starting in late October, so look for the "vacation" tag on my page before sending me any newbies. I came across the Egumball AfD while patrolling delsort-California. Looks like advertising all the way, but I settled for non-notable. (Although it might be fun to quote some of the devastating critiques of the company that are all over the Internet on consumer sites....) --MelanieN (talk) 21:32, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, when Google suggests an alternative search for 'egumball complaints', it's not looking good. Might even be notable if the complaints were taken up by the big names in the press. Notability can be for notoriety... Peridon (talk) 21:42, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Knickers in a knot
I wouldn't worry about the RFA. If someone wants to hold a knife to the throat of an innocent candidate and use that as a threat or political statement about someone (me), that speaks to their character and not mine. It is a bully move, almost a type of extortion or act of cowardice, but in the end it is meaningless. The root of the issue would appear to lie way before the RFA, and as hard as might try, I simply don't give a damn about their opinion. But I appreciate your efforts. Czar is a fine candidate. I didn't even expect to nom, even though he came and asked me first. He will do just fine, and would have without my help. Dennis - 2¢ 23:20, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
- LOL, no knots in my knickers! I just hated to see that ridiculous comment stand without someone pointing out how ridiculous it was. Certainly Czar's RfA appears to be in no danger, and I am proud to note that **I** was the first person to suggest to him, a year and a half ago, that he should consider adminship. He pooh-poohed the idea, but a few months later Stalwart suggested it and Czar began to say "well.....", and here we are. --MelanieN (talk) 00:38, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
- I wasn't talking about your knickers, but thank you for planting that seed. He does seem like a good guy, and I agree, he will do well. Maybe by the time I get back you will be ready. Anna Frodesiak would be a good mentor if you wanted to work in that direction. I would even come out of wikibreak to nom you, if you wanted. Dennis - 2¢ 02:47, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, I really appreciate it. I am actually on kind of the same curve as I described for Czar: evolving from "no way" (when several previous people suggested it), to "well....." when you suggested it. Let's talk after the new year. --MelanieN (talk) 02:53, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
- Me? Mentor? Me maybe mentor MelanieN? MelanieN needs mentoring? MelanieN doesn't need mentoring. MelanieN is awesome. MelanieN, a couple of big questions: Any skeletons in your closet that would come up at an RfA? Do you want to be an admin? If you try and fail, would that put you off editing Wikipedia? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:04, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
- I don't think she needs mentoring in the traditional sense, she has a good bead on the place, but I know that Anna will know where Melanie needs to shore up, giving her time to do that. Might not be anywhere. I've been around Melanie enough (even when she didn't know it) that I would run my metrics and such, but I'm confident enough to commit. I pinged Anna because I can't think of anyone I would rather share the honor with, or anyone I trust to vet properly and help you prepare. I like to look a few months out, which might be the right time frame. Just email me if I'm not around, it won't take long to prepare on my side. Dennis - 2¢ 03:19, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
- Wow, thanks for the endorsement, Anna! As for your questions: was that a test, to see if the prospective nominee is dumb enough to answer them in public? "Oh, yes, I have this and this skeleton in my closet, hope no one finds out!" Just kidding, I am pretty skeleton-free, but I'll email you the same comments I emailed to Dennis, when he first suggested this to me. And I'll solicit your advice about what I need to do more of, or get more familiar with, over the next few months.
Before any bandwagon gets going, I have not, repeat NOT, decided if I will run or not. That will depend in part on the advice I get from you guys, after you rummage through my history and experience and see what you find. Dennis, I can well believe you are kind of nommed out right now! And you are planning a wikibreak. And I am too busy in Real Life over the next month or so to even think about it. So let's just not even worry about it until next year. --MelanieN (talk) 05:21, 26 November 2014 (UTC)- No test. Really, if you have skeletons, there's no harm in disclosing them, so long as they are disclosed like "...I had a content dispute at diff and it got pretty rough and there was a canvassing accusation, but that's over now..." and not like "...I had this fight with the evil XXXX and he was wrong and I hope he falls into lava...". Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:06, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
- Well, gosh, I wish I had some skeletons then! It would be fun to try to come up with an interesting way to describe them. However, I am pretty much boneless. I emailed you, you can see if you agree. --MelanieN (talk) 23:19, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

That way you will get notified when there is something coming up. As far as I know there has been just one San Diego meetup; it was held in conjunction with ComicCon last year, and I think only three people showed up. Robertson-Webb protocol
Dear MelanieN,
I don't understand why you removed all content from Robertson-Webb protocol. The content you removed was not included in Envy-free - it started to describe the protocol itself, just like many other Wikipedia pages that are devoted for describing algorithms, see all the pages in Category:Graph algorithms. I was just going to extend the Robertson-Webb protocol page to contain a more detailed description of the protocol. Please restore it to what it was. --Erel Segal (talk) 07:19, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi there Melanie. WT:RfA is an extremely informal discussion area. No admins are obliged in the slightest to follow the discussions on it or even acknowledge them. Admins are elected because the community has has voiced their trust that admin tools will be used wisely and with discretion. If an admin has clearly acted in contravention of the confidence that is vested in them, there are places to take the matter up. But you know all this already. Take it easy :) --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:53, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Do me a favor?
Hi Melanie! I just completed this draft. I have done a huge work and it took a good amount of my time to complete. But before I move it to mainspace and ask you to nominate it for DYK, I want some help from you. I found some sources in the draft is dead. I no longer have access to strong internet connection, the internet connection I'm using is shared by many other students making the connection weak and that is causing a huge trouble for me to fix those dead links. So, I was wondering if you can help me fix those dead links. You can use this tool to check which links are dead and then use the Wayback machine to fix those dead links. Thank you very much! Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:12, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
- @Jim Carter - Public: @Jim Cartar: I'll get to it today - about the dead links. But I'm puzzled. Your article contains a full biography of Abhishek Bachchan - it almost has more information than is in the article Abhishek Bachchan. Most articles titled "filmography" don't have any of that, they have just the table of films, or at most a lead sentence; check out any of the articles at Category:Filmographies. You can do what you want with the article, of course. But I don't think it would be approved for DYK; someone would immediately say that all the prose portion of the article should be at the biography article instead. Sorry, I know you love DYKs but I don't think this one will be accepted.--MelanieN (talk) 19:29, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
- Wait - now I'm even more puzzled. This article Abhishek Bachchan filmography already exists - has existed on Wikipedia for more than a year. You are aware of it; you have posted to it. So what is your draft about? I'm going to wait to find out what you are trying to do here, before I check on the links. --MelanieN (talk) 19:29, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
- Did you saw some filmographies like Aamir Khan filmography or Shahrukh Khan filmography? Lead must include a brief summary about the subject and I did it. I know the lead has become somewhat lengthy than the other filmograhies mentioned above but it can be fixed anytime after the deadlinks are fixed. I know that most filmograhies only contain a few words in the lead but not the featured list candidates. This draft is a featured list candidate but before I go for that big, I want it to get a DYK (Planing for WP:Triple crown) I know that Abhishek Bachchan filmography already exist and it is in a pretty bad condition (only ~1000 prose whereas my article is ~6500), nowhere near to get FL. My draft is like a workshop, as I make huge number of Typos and mistakes, I didn't touched that article as it gets good traffic and I don't like edit conflicts so I started that draft and thought when the draft will complete, I will replace the content of the article by my draft. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:50, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
- OK, I see. By my tools the current article has a text size of 1247 and your draft has 7387, a more than five-fold increase (actually 5.92). So technically your article would qualify as a five-fold expansion. Based on the ones you linked, I see that that the extended lead section has been used in some that became featured lists. I also note that neither of those had a DYK.
I will look at the dead links, but I see you have more than 130 references. If more than a few of them are dead links - if there are dozens - I may decide that is too much to ask, and not do it.
I'll let you know when I am done with the links. But I am not willing to nominate this one for DYK. You might want to nominate it yourself; it would be good experience for you, and I don't think you would have to do a WP:QPQ review, because it would be your first nomination. --MelanieN (talk) 20:18, 28 November 2014 (UTC)- OK, I see that lists with a lot of prose content ARE accepted at DYK. Clearly I had a misunderstanding of what a "list" article can be like. So you might well want to nominate it. However, I see that more than 20 of your links are dead. That's a lot to ask of somebody, even a friend. --MelanieN (talk) 20:34, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Yes, I was aware that lists are accepted at DYK. After all lists are also a sort of article. I didn't knew that so many are dead. I'm really very sorry but can you do anything? There is no hurry. You can fix one per day for instance. And you can also use the tool which I mentioned above, it automates the process or you can fix as many as you can. Now you decide. If you wish you can ignore this request. Again I'm really very sorry. Have a nice day! Jim Carter (from public cyber) 20:52, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

- OK, I see that lists with a lot of prose content ARE accepted at DYK. Clearly I had a misunderstanding of what a "list" article can be like. So you might well want to nominate it. However, I see that more than 20 of your links are dead. That's a lot to ask of somebody, even a friend. --MelanieN (talk) 20:34, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
No rush, Jim. One email was a reply to your latest email, just personal. The other was some comments about your draft. If you want I could post those comments here at Wiki instead; I emailed them to keep my comments private because they are kind of negative. Hope the "real life trouble" isn't serious and goes away quickly! --MelanieN (talk) 18:31, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
- Oh. Amazingly my mail box opened but I may not reply now as it still not working properly. Draft: Okay, I will fix those issues as soon as I get back home in the next few weeks. About the producer of Paa: Note, IMDB is not a reliable source I will look over it on other sites. As far I remember Abhishek Bachchan was also honored by an award for producing that film which is also supported by a source. Anyway, thanks a ton for your help and great assessment about the references. I will fix it up within the next few week. Most of the issues are because I don't get enough free time for Wikipedia and when editing for a short time, I hurry, (More work, less time) and that is why I overlooked those issues. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:19, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, I found this source, is it enough to prove that Bachchan was the producer of Paa? Thanks, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:35, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, Jim, I'm on wikibreak right now and I'm not able to work on your article. Bad timing, since I know you are eager to move forward with it. I'll take a look next week. MelanieN (talk) 08:29, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

- I'm back! That's great that you were able to fix the dead links. I will work on setting up a DYK. I have some suggestions but I'll take them to your talk page. --MelanieN (talk) 19:07, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
- With this edit the content of Abhishek Bachchan filmography article is replaced by the draft. You have done a great job to improve the article. The article looks totally different from what it was before. Now it is ready to get nominated for DYK. We have expanded it by almost 7 folds. Congrats! Jim Carter 10:29, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

Escalating prods
I can't speak for the other user, but in the case of right to a family I caught it because the LGBT-related keywords in it meant that it showed up on User:AlexNewArtBot/LGBTSearchResult — so after looking at the article and seeing a virtually contentless pile of nonsense, I reviewed the edit history and saw the prods and deprod that way. If there's a page where all deprodded pages can be automatically tracked, though, then unfortunately I'm not aware of it. Bearcat (talk) 06:44, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for answering my question, Bearcat. It would be a nice feature, though, wouldn't it? --MelanieN (talk) 06:47, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
- Sure would sometimes...maybe somebody should suggest it at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)? Bearcat (talk) 07:15, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) There is of course the Article Alerts bot which projects can sign up for. It is an extremely important tool for my work on the schools project for example. It works only for each project that is subscribed to it and it relies on someone having it on their wl and watching regularly. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:00, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion, Kudpung. I guess that's what worked for Bearcat, and would work for anyone interested in a specific subject area. I had wondered (in my question to Bearcat) whether there was some category or list for all articles that had been prodded and then deprodded. I thought that would be an interesting list to patrol. Oh well. --MelanieN (talk) 04:56, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- Try this: Category:Past proposed deletion candidates. It might be what you are looking for, but I haven't got time right now to take a closer look at it. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:27, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- Well, that's an interesting category all right. Pretty much too huge for browsing, and mostly older articles (I saw nothing more recent than 2012), but interesting nevertheless. The reason they are all listed by talk page is because they have a template ( {{oldprodfull}} ) on the talk page saying "This article was proposed for deletion in the past". I have never seen that template before; is it still used? --MelanieN (talk) 16:26, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry, no idea. I guess 'old prod full' is something to do with the fact that articles can only be prodded once. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 16:43, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Kudpung: except: BLPs with no sources. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 12:34, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

I will let you know when I have the article in shape. Thanks for your patience! --MelanieN (talk) 18:22, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- No worries. Being a parent means that patience is absolutely necessary, especially when Christmas is coming up. Anyway, I am delighted to see you enjoy rescuing articles from AfD, which is a favourite passtime of mine as well. More thoughts here. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:40, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- Glad to meet another article rescuer. AfD nominated articles are more challenging; I also do unreferenced BLPs but they are a snap. I think this one was my favorite: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Emil Frei. Now back to documenting Double IPA! --MelanieN (talk) 19:17, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- Ah yes. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/University of Michigan Men's Glee Club was a long hard slog, no matter how many sources I threw up, people kept !voting delete, so in the end I sourced everything, copyedited it and said "right, you buggers, I'm taking this to GA, see if I don't!" ... and did ;-) Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:51, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- LOL, now that's a rescue I haven't attempted yet! (taking the article to GA.) Well done! --MelanieN (talk) 19:54, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Evan Kosiner was a tough one to crack, as it was a marginally notable person buried in a ton of COI spam which kept getting put back mid-AfD so people !voted delete all over again. I forgot I said "If multiple reliable sources said he was a notable lavatory attendant, that would still meet WP:GNG and be worth a stub" ;-) UMMGC is the only AfD -> GA I've done, they are incredibly rare, you basically have to have a long article that's totally unsourced where most sources are offline to do it, I think. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:58, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- AfD to GA is the definition of WP:HEY, isn't it? I notice that most of the people who invoke WP:HEY don't actually do any of the work to get it there. --MelanieN (talk) 20:11, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- I think WP:HEY is generally used as a compliment to whoever did the heavy lifting. Good call on Emil Frei by the way, WP:ACADEMIC and WP:PROF are not understood as much as they should be and a well placed source to a university website confirming a post will kill a !delete vote stone dead. If you want a "live" example, by the way, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Summer Camp Music Festival is on my radar, I've added a Rolling Stone source which ought to seal the deal, but you never can tell. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:17, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

- Oh yes, that. I'll have a look when you're done - I think it was just sourcing and verification issues, the prose and coverage was pretty good. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:47, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Nepal/Canada articles
Hi!
I noticed your comment in your AfD nomination of "Effective microorganisms (EM) for accelerating composting" that the article was "one of a group of articles created last month about exporting agricultural products from Canada to Nepal". I haven't seen the other ones, but this just popped up in the New Pages feed:
Nepalese honey (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
Nepalese/Canadian agricultural export/import is a pretty niche subject, so I assume this is more of the same... Kolbasz (talk) 19:46, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads-up, Kolbasz! Since I became aware of these things (by noticing half a dozen in quick succession at New Pages and saying "hey, wait a minute"), I have been finding them everywhere - 25 or 30 of them to date. I have prodded most of them, but a few were acceptable as articles after I deleted the Nepal/Canada stuff. It's possible I have missed a few. No one seems to know who is doing these. I suspect it's a school assignment, but nobody knows anything about it at the Education project, and the users haven't responded to questions. Others have suspected it was spam by sockpuppets, but I doubt that; the writing styles are too different. Anyhow, if you spot any more let me know; repelling this invasion seems to be my "school project" right now! 0;-D --MelanieN (talk) 20:43, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- It is most strange. Hitting the search function, I found some more of them: Nepalese Persimmon Ginger Jam (already PRODded), Nepali orthodox tea, Nepalese silk, Nepalese Buckwheat (already tagged for A10 speedy deletion), and Maofeng green tea. Sinopodophyllum seems to have gotten a drive-by Nepaling as well, with some cleanup attempts and reversions going on (see its talk page). Kolbasz (talk) 22:21, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- Great searching! This is too weird. I'm going to start a list of these articles, so other people can see how they are part of a pattern. And maybe we'll eventually be able to figure out what is going on. --MelanieN (talk) 05:38, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

- The plot thickens! I just found another addition to an existing article, at Girardinia diversifolia. The username, Studentinsuomi, suggests a Finnish school project. Kolbasz (talk) 13:53, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your additions, keep it up! The Canada link seems so strong with the others, maybe this is a Finnish student studying in Canada??? I wonder if we'll ever find out what is going on here. --MelanieN (talk) 15:16, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- Well, here's a clue: User:Nepalese Junar. This draft is still in userspace, so it doesn't need to be dealt with as an article. But it says at the top that it was written by a student at the University of Guelph - which is in Ontario, so yes, these are coming from Canada. That's part of the mystery solved, thanks to User:LowLevel73 who found that draft. Now if we just had a professor's name we would know who to ask about this.
Meanwhile the student has taken the name of the article as their username and has posted the article as their userpage. I'm not sure what if anything we should do about that. It's now in their sandbox. --MelanieN (talk) 18:13, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Buckwheat
Hi, I just wanted to draw your attention quickly that Nepalese Buckwheat is apparently not just Fagopyrum esculentum as the page says, but includes two species, as this article says. This tangle might take some time to sort out. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 18:44, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for that information, Sminthopsis84! I have actually proposed the article Nepalese Buckwheat for deletion, since it is an essay or analysis of the economic possibilities of buckwheat growing and exportation, rather than a true Wikipedia article. (See the above section here on my talk page, about Nepal-Canada articles.) It may be that the author chose to ignore F. tataricum, since according to the reference you linked, the Tartary species is "unknown in the West" - and the author was interested only in exportable products. If the article gets deleted, does that solve the problem, or is there still something that needs sorting out? --MelanieN (talk) 19:13, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm. The Fagopyrum tataricum page says "unfamiliar in the west", which I think is more accurate, meaning that people don't buy it to eat. This source says it is a weed in Europe and North America, and it is used for animal feed. The page about the species could be greatly expanded. Do you suppose that any of the material from Nepalese Buckwheat should be moved there rather than to Buckwheat? Sminthopsis84 (talk) 19:58, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- I'll have to defer to your expertise on that. Since the author did not mention F. tataricum I'm not sure what we would move there, but if you see anything that would be appropriate, please go ahead and boldly add it. I did put a paragraph or two from the Nepalese article into the Buckwheat article; was any of that incorrect or in the wrong place? Sorry about misremembering "unfamiliar" as "unknown". The mind is the first thing to go. 0;-D --MelanieN (talk) 20:24, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- BTW - there were four of these student-written essays where we kept the articles, while removing the "how to export from Nepal to Canada" type stuff. If you feel like it, would you like to take a look at those articles, and see if 1) what the students wrote was accurate and 2) what we removed was appropriate? One of them was a new article, Sapindus mukorossi. The other three were existing articles to which the students added their essay: Vigna mungo, Girardinia diversifolia, and Sinopodophyllum. Thanks for your help here! --MelanieN (talk) 20:51, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
I've had a look at those articles now, and I won't look too deeply at what the students wrote (I wonder how the professor assesses material placed in wikipedia). I think what you did with the Nepalese buckwheat article is appropriate; it looks as if at least two species had been conflated, and some other parts would have been more appropriate at cover crop. I've added a little at various buckwheat articles in the hope of preventing such confusion in future. (Using common names for article titles causes all sorts of messes, and I'm sure it has made this poor student's life more difficult. WP:FLORA tries to prevent some of that sort of thing by using scientific names for plants as much as possible.) Sminthopsis84 (talk) 23:29, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Sminthopsis84. I was actually in favor of deleting the Nepalese buckwheat article entirely, but a redirect accomplishes pretty much the same thing - especially since you say that the student may have been confused about the species. I can see how a title like "Buckwheat," when there are several species under that common name, leads to this kind of error. --MelanieN (talk) 18:42, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Quick question about GA
Hey, is there any minimum standard for the prose size of a article? I mean an article that is well focused and is well cited but has less than 6000+ characters. Can that article become a GA, even when the prose size is low compared to other GA articles? Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:47, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
- There isn't any specific rule about the length of the article that I can find at Wikipedia:Good article criteria or Wikipedia:Reviewing good articles. I think the requirement is just that the article cover the subject in depth. If you have something you are thinking of nominating for Good Article, do you want me to look at it first? I'm no expert, but I have three Good Articles, so at least I've been through the process. --MelanieN (talk) 18:37, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
- (stalking) Which article is this? As Melanie says, there's no hard and fast rule, but from my experience an article below about 6K is more likely to not meet the "broad in coverage" criteria (while an article above 60K, conversely, stands a good chance of not meeting the "focused" criteria), and an article below 3K is a strong candidate for a stub or merge. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:12, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- It is not yet a article, but a draft kept here. It needs some copyediting and then it can be a good DYK candidate. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 14:59, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- It's a good article, but I don't know it if is a Good Article. (Pardon the pun.) As the saying goes, let's not put the cart before the horse. First get the article into shape (you're right, it does need copyediting; I could help with that). Launch it into mainspace. Submit a DYK. See how the article gets rated by the people who do the evaluating for WikiProjects. (I'm always surprised by how low they rate things; they'll say "start" for something that looks to me like a B class article.) I think it's quite possible that a biographical article about a historical figure like this might cover the subject in depth and still come in at less than 6,000 characters. I think you have made good use of your sources and created an excellent article. Nobody is recommending that you "pad" the article just to bring it up to an arbitrary size. Ritchie, can you point us to some Good Articles about similar people for comparison? --MelanieN (talk) 15:17, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- I will be glad if you can copyedit it then I will move it to mainspace and you can nominate it for DYK if you wish. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:18, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- This, not a huge article but a FA. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:33, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- Not huge, no - but still, 17,000 bytes of readable prose. --MelanieN (talk) 16:36, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Since we don't have any such rules so I think one cannot decline it's GA nomination for that reason. The subject didn't have a huge career so while the article is indept, the length is not as long as other GA articles. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 17:33, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- Certainly nothing will stop you from nominating it for GA, and if the length is the only problem it might well pass. I agree that you have covered the topic in depth and well sourced. I think this is premature to think about now though. First to create an article, then to think about GA for it. --MelanieN (talk) 17:46, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm. Okay so are you going to copyedit it or shall I ask Phil? He has been copyediting my articles for a long time. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 18:32, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- I can do it, but not until later today or tomorrow. If you want to ask Phil that's fine - or we could both work on it. --MelanieN (talk) 18:36, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you very much! I noticed that you removed the part of his death from the lead. I saw in some good articles like this which mentions it in the lead. Jim Carter 18:11, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
- It could be mentioned, but the sentence in the lead was exactly the same, or at least contained exactly the same information, as the sentence in the text; you want to avoid that kind of redundancy. --MelanieN (talk) 18:19, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
- OK, good, I see you have moved it. It still needs: some categories; a persondata box between the references and the categories; and a {{DEFAULTSORT:Watts, Charles DeWitt}} tag right above the categories. --MelanieN (talk) 05:32, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hey, yes I moved it. I will not add default sort or persondata as it will be done by Yobot and BattyBot. I don't know what cats to add. Thank you for expanding it a bit. Btw are you willing to nominate it for DYK? Jim Carter 07:04, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I will nominate it for DYK in the next day or so. You really should add some categories, the article is not complete without them. You know he is a physician and an African American; there are probably subcategories within those categories that would be better than just "physician" and "African American". You could take a look at the Category:African-American people page to find the best subcategory; for example look under "African-American people by occupation" to see if they have "surgeon" or "physician". You know what year he was born, and that's an easy category for any biography: "(year) births". Likewise "(year) deaths". Likewise alumni of the schools he went to, and the cities he is from. Categories are an important part of the job of writing an article, and this subject probably fits into 10 or 12 categories.--MelanieN (talk) 15:08, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

Paul Rosolie
Good morning, Melanie! I started an article about a naturalist, Paul Rosolie but now I'm not sure if it meets our notability threshold, can you please take a look and express your opinion? I was in the process of expanding that article now, but it looks like my mobile battery will not last long so I kept it incomplete. Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks! Jim Carter 12:56, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
- I'm traveling and can't do a lot of Wikipedia stuff. But I took a look at your article and did some searching for sources. There are additional sources at Fox News and People. But I think your hunch is right: he may not meet the Notability requirement right now. Basically all of the coverage is about the Discovery Channel special; some people would consider that is a matter of WP:BLP1E. And that is very recent so it's almost a matter of WP:NOTNEWS. He has also written a book but I didn't find any coverage about it. I think if this came to AfD the result would be to delete - or to redirect to the Eaten Alive article. You could use what you have found to expand that article, if you want. BTW I'm surprised you started this article in mainspace. You usually do a userspace draft first. Being an actual article, it is out there for anybody to tag for deletion at any time. And the clock is already ticking, as far as being eligible for DYK. Sorry not to have better news! --MelanieN (talk) 15:57, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
- I wanted to start a stub, I don't know how come you thought I was asking for DYK. I haven't done much research before starting it but when I did, I doubted that he might not yet notable for the same reasons you said. As I thought of starting a simple stub hence I didn't started it in userspace. I only start userspace drafts when the project is something special. From my experience, I have seen that articles started by experienced users are less prone to get deletion tags. Anyway, I have turned it into a redirect. Thanks for your help! Jim Carter 17:09, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
- I just mentioned DYK because it's always a possibility with a new article. You're right that people are less inclined or at least less quick to tag articles by experienced editors for deletion, but it does happen. Even a stub has to be about someone notable. Redirecting was smart. It preserves all your work, if you want to expand it into an article later. MelanieN (talk) 17:22, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Help on Deletion Review?
Hi Melanie. I see you commented on the deletion of the page for Computer Economics. Could you review the material I submitted for consideration on the firm's notability? ==Deletion review for Computer Economics== An editor has asked for a deletion review of Computer Economics. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Thanks in advance. I'd like to ask you to reconsider your delete vote in light of new information. The article is actively being edited the students and instructor to address the promotion concerns. Antrocent (♫♬) 02:48, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Charles DeWitt Watts
On 30 December 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Charles DeWitt Watts, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that Charles DeWitt Watts, the first African American board-certified surgeon in North Carolina, worked a paper route to help pay for his college education? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Charles DeWitt Watts. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
