Welcome!

Welcome to Wikipedia, I commented over here. I expect you'd see anyhow, but now you have a "permalink" that I got from going to the "View history" tab of the page. Now, even when people make subsequent edits to the page, it will only show this historical version. Eventually, talk page comments go off to the "archive", where they can be found and linked as well. Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. photo of Aspergillus ochraceus

Hello Sir, I got your message regarding the photo of my fungi. I would really appreciate it, if you could provide me with a photo of my fungi. Thank you so muchRia99 (talk) 00:56, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

I'll try to dig up one or two in the next few days. Medmyco (talk) 04:45, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Referencing Questions

Hi Dr. Scott, I'm not sure that I have referenced an IMI Descriptions of Fungi and Bacteria article properly in my sandbox. Maybe you can check? As a side note, not sure that I'm using the talk page properly either!Renatofrart (talk) 13:46, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

No problem, it look OK. I moved your references to the template at the bottom. You can insert additional references there and simply call them from the main text. It will make your life easier. You'll see how I did it. Medmyco (talk) 15:51, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks!Renatofrart (talk) 21:58, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Subheading issues

Hi, Dr. Scott! My fungus is Saksenaea vasiformis, a fairly newly discovered fungus in 1953. All the articles are about case reports and pathogenic characteristics of the fungus and I don't know where to find the history, ecology of the fungus :(.. Any advice??? Kchung325 (talk) 08:09, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure, but maybe start by trying this: Chien, Chiu-Yuan; Bhat, Darbhe Jayarama; Kendrick, W. Bryce. 1992. Mycological observations on Saksenaea vasiformis (Saksenaeaceae, Mucorales). Transactions of the Mycological Society of Japan 33(4): 443-447. It should be in the ESC library or in the stacks at Gerstein. Also try: Watanake T. 2011. Pictorial atlas of soil and seed fungi, 3rd ed. Boca Raton FL: CRC Press. (The second edition will work if that's all we have.) Although we don't have Howard DH. Pathogenic fungi in humans and animals (2nd ed.). New York: Marcel Dekker, ISBN 0824706838, I can send you the relevant part next week. You might also be able to get some good references from the "Saksenaea" entry in Ainsworth & Bisby's Dictionary of the Fungi (Kirk PM et al. (eds) 2008. Ainsworth & Bisby's Dictionary of the Fungi, 10th ed. Wallingford UK: CABI International.) Ask Professor Summerbell next week too, because he might have some other suggestions. Medmyco (talk) 15:30, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Also you might find some references in this article: http://zygomycetes.org/index.php?id=49 Medmyco (talk) 19:08, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks so much! I will look into those references. Kchung325 (talk) 08:09, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

How to transfer stub-article into my sandbox

Hello Dr. Scott , I have a quick question for you. I'm writing my article on Aspergillus terrus and it's already a stub article on Wikipedia. I want to expand it but I'm not sure if I should make changes on the article's edit page or whether I should move the existing information into my sandbox (as an external link) where I can then continue the writing process. I've referred back to the Wiki Training for Students but unfortunately I'm still confused. Thanks,in advance, for your help! Osmanidi (talk) 07:30, 15 October 2013 (UTC)Osmanidi (talk) 07:34, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

I suggest you copy the existing material to your sandbox and work from there. Just hit the "edit" tab on the Aspergillus terreus page, then copy all (Ctrl-A), go back to your sandbox, edit and paste. Working in your sandbox will prevent others from modifying your work before you have completed it. Medmyco (talk) 15:02, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Did I Make My 'Stub' Properly?

Hi Professor, I wanted to create my article though it is only a stub. Did I do this properly? I just went from my sandbox and clicked to make an article. Not sure if I have made a wiki-faux pas. Thanks!Renatofrart (talk) 12:05, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Also, there appears to be a typo in the title of my "article" (such as it is). It is meant to be Apophysomyces variabilis but is missing an h so says Apopysomyces. I can't figure out how to correct this. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again!Renatofrart (talk) 18:59, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm looking into the problem. I've asked our campus volunteer, User:OhanaUnited to help.Medmyco (talk) 20:14, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Renatofrart, I think I fixed it (sandbox and typo). Check and see if that's what you intend to be. OhanaUnitedTalk page 23:21, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I think it's fixed now. Thanks for all the help.Renatofrart (talk) 23:25, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Dr. Scott, how do I go about starting my article stub from my sandbox? There's an option to create article, but it says I may have to wait three weeks to have it reviewed which didn't seem right so and I didn't want to do anything I couldn't undo. Also in terms of citing a book, the citing fields we are required to fill out only include space for one author's name. What should we do if there are multiple authors? Lastly, you said we could have multiple sandboxes, how do we go about creating another one? Mccull44 (talk) 20:13, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Regarding changing the topic

Hello Professor, I read your msg regarding my topic that the article on Onygena equina is already created. That's too bad, I already found some information about the fungus. But well.. so, you want me to work on Ochroconis gallopava instead? I am ok with it. Please reassign me on the course page. Thank you! User:choemin99 —Preceding undated comment added 21:21, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

I can give you some leads on Ochroconis gallopava, I should also have some nice pictures. Thanks for your understanding on this! Medmyco (talk) 21:29, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
choemin99, you can indicate which article you plan to work on by going to Education Program:University of Toronto/HMB436H - Medical and Veterinary Mycology (2013 Q3) and add the page name beside your name. OhanaUnitedTalk page 23:56, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you Professor and OhanaUnited. User:Medmyco Also could you please send me some pictures of Ochroconis gallopava? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Choemin99 (talkcontribs) 01:49, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Reference question

Hi Professor Scott, I am wondering for referencing due today, are we only putting references into talk page, and not include anything in article we worked? Also, I am working on my article in "article" page, is that right? (doesn't show it is a stub) Thank you Mengf123 (talk) 17:49, 18 October 2013 (UTC)Mengf123 oct18

You can either put the references on the talk page or in your sandbox. If you do it in your sandbox, as I showed in the tutorials, you can attach the references to point-form facts, which will make the article writing easier. Medmyco (talk) 22:39, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Paracoccidioidomyosis

Hi Dr Scott, I was wondering if I could include the book you gave me as one of my references. It actually doesn't have any ISBN number or any specified authors, because it's a symposium. It does however, have a "Scientific Publication No.", year of publish, and a publisher title: Pan American Health Organization. I have included it in my ref list in sandbox for now. Thanks for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Naz7 (talkcontribs) 23:58, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Sure, I don't see any problem with that. Just enter the reference manually. Medmyco (talk) 00:20, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Regarding assignment due on Friday

Hello Dr Scott, I am panicking now because I finished the first assignment by Wednesday, but I just figured out that writing in the sandbox does not automatically upload onto the talk page and we were supposed to post it onto the talk page. For some reason I thought sandbox and talk page are connected or something, I don't know why I was thinking this way. So I copied my writing from sandbox into talk page right now. I was wondering is it going to be a problem? Please check my activity history, you will see that I finished it on October 16. I am so sorry for confusion. User:choemin99 —Preceding undated comment added 22:21, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Not a problem. I go by the activity log, so either sandbox or talk page are fine. Medmyco (talk) 20:09, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Re: Sandbox disruption

I couldn't think of a reason why. Maybe there are some eager people who thinks those articles look ready and submit them to AfC. Is there a reason why you want the students to work within sandbox over the mainspace? It's still the same page and all edit history are kept. OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:21, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Picture of Fungus

Hi Dr. Scott, do you have an image of my fungus, Apophysomyces variabilis? Also, could you please take a look at the history section on my fungus? I'm somewhat confused about describing the naming/identification of A. variabilis and want to know if my description makes sense. Thanks!Renatofrart (talk) 18:13, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Referencing Issues

Hi Dr.Scot! I have an issue with referencing a couple of my sources (one book and one article). It was fine when I used to insert them in the article, but as I changed it to "ref name" format, a problem with bad referencing occurred. Could you please take a look at it? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Naz7 (talkcontribs) 17:14, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Fixed. The name field in the reference tag does not like accents. Medmyco (talk) 02:43, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Picture of Microsporum nanum

Hi Dr. Scott, do you have any figures of M. nanum? Also there are some great pictures about my fungus in lecture note, could I use those in my article? Thank you! Ciel0525 (talk) 18:27, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

This was Dr. Summerbell's lecture so you should ask him. I'll look around but I don't think I have any photos of M. nanum. Medmyco (talk) 02:44, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Ochroconis gallopava

Hi Dr. Scott. Could you please tell me how to add myself to the class list so that people may comment on my page as well? Many thanks! Aldo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mycoclass (talkcontribs) 16:46, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

Sure Aldo, you need to go to the wiki class page, upper left corner and click "enroll". You'll need to enter the enrollment token that I provided in class. If you don't remember it, I can email it to you. Once you've joined, go to the bottom of the class page and add the name of your article. I'll cross-post this to your talk page to make sure you get the message. Medmyco (talk) 23:14, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

Aspergillus terreus

Hello, Professor Scott! Do you have any pictures of the fungus Aspergillus terreus, if yes, could you please provide them to me? It'd be great if I could get a "profile pic" of the fungus as well as any additional pictures such as the fungus growing in culture media etc... Thanks in advance! Hi Professor, I was just wondering if I could visit you sometime today to talk about my article, I had a couple of questions. If so, just let me know when and where! Thank you.April pat (talk) 15:17, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

April, yes, any time, I'm in my office until 6 pm or so. Medmyco (talk) 19:11, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Apophysomyces variabilis

I looked at the Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Medicine-related articles and read the section on case studies. Do you think I should just remove the case studies and/or write them in a different format? I understand that excessive citing of examples is not appropriate for a wiki article, do you think these two case examples are excessive? Thanks!Renatofrart (talk) 02:28, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Maybe remove the cases. You might be able to integrate some of the information into other sections of the article though. Medmyco (talk) 02:30, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Moving Article to Main Space

I am not able to move my article to the main space becuase the article already exists. I created the article that already exists so I'm tempted to copy my sandbox and past into the main article, I've read that this is not a good idea because it destroys the edit history. Any ideas? ThanksRenatofrart (talk) 03:33, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Dr. Scott, I am having a similar problem. Unfortunately, I just copied and pasted it from my sandbox to the A. versicolor wikipage. I don't know if I should undo the paste or not. Please let me know what to do. Thank you! MinnieVW (talk) 04:54, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
You can just leave the artice in your sandbox. I'll mark it and make any necessary edits, then we can migrate it to the main page. Medmyco (talk) 11:06, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Am I to assume that this applies to everyone else who already have article stubs on their respective fungi? Just checking, here. ARoble12 (talk) 15:18, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes Abdullah, I'll just work from your contribution history to figure out where I should be going - i.e. your sandbox or the main-page article. I'll let you know if I have any problems? I'll also make any revisions I think are needed, and leave specific comments on your talk page. Medmyco (talk) 18:40, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Scopulariopsis Brevicaulis

I merged Scopulariopsis Brevicaulis into Microascus brevicaulis because according to a 1998 paper, they appear to be about the same species. Please see the talk page for details. If post-1998 research indicates that the two species are distinct, please either remove the "histmerge" template at the top of Microascus brevicaulis and undo my edit to Scopulariopsis Brevicaulis, or if the histmerge has already happened, ask the administrator who did it to undo it. If there is a species named Scopulariopsis brevicaulis (note the lowercase b) please make sure that the article about it winds up at the proper place, not at Scopulariopsis Brevicaulis. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 20:27, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Two pages

Hi, I want to ask you if Mycocladus corymbifer and Lichtheimia corymbifera are referring to the same species. On Mycocladus corymbifer, it is far less developed and listed Lichtheimia corymbifera as the synonym (yet on Lichtheimia corymbifera it didn't list Mycocladus corymbifer as synonym). If they are the same the same species, I would like to redirect Mycocladus corymbifer into Lichtheimia corymbifera. OhanaUnitedTalk page 15:44, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes, they are the same thing. The fungus should currently be treated in the genus Lichtheimia per Hoffmann et al (Revision of the genus Absidia (Mucorales, Zygomycetes) based on physiological, phylogenetic, and morphological characters; thermotolerant Absidia spp. form a coherent group, Mycocladiaceae fam. nov., Mycol Res 111:1169-1183, 2007, PMID:17997297; and Mycol. Res. 113:277-278, 2009). The MycoBank entry is incorrect and has not been updated. Medmyco (talk) 21:22, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I have redirected Mycocladus corymbifer to Lichtheimia corymbifera. OhanaUnitedTalk page 06:10, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Great. I just noticed that Absidia corymbifera, which is also the same taxon, needs to be redirected to Lichtheimia corymbifera as well. There may also be some material here worth merging (e.g., the fancy table at the bottom). Medmyco (talk) 06:50, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Fungus photos

I moved them to Wikimedia Commons (which allow the same image to be re-used in non-English Wikipedias, Wikispecies, and others). What you previously did was considered "local upload", which did not allow re-use by the aforementioned projects due to technical limitations. The photos remain there, see Microascus brevicaulis as example. It only switched the image provider from local to Commons. The only image path that I changed was File:Paecilomyces variotii culture.jpg because a photo of the same name already exists in Commons, so I don't understand why you said you couldn't see them in any of the articles. OhanaUnitedTalk page 23:41, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Can you give me one or two pages where the image doesn't show up after the transfer? OhanaUnitedTalk page 00:07, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
Weird. When I told you to check Microascus brevicaulis earlier today, the image was there. Now it shows the same symptom. But pages like Onychocola canadensis remain unaffected. I sent a question to see if others are experiencing similar issue. OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:31, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I purged the cached versions of the page. Before the purge, there was no image. After the purge, the image was there. I didn't have to do any of the fancy steps recommended for images, just a simple purge of Microascus brevicaulis was all that was required. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 06:05, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
Funny thing was that I never opened those pages in IE yet they do show the placeholder image (so not an issue of cache). But after purging, images reappear for both Firefox and IE. OhanaUnitedTalk page 08:52, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks guys, whatever you did, it fixed it! Medmyco (talk) 14:06, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

Question

Hi Dr. Scott, You informed the class earlier that you had images that you could distribute to us for our articles. I stole a few from other wikipedia pages because I read the copyright infringements of wikipedia and it said that I could use images from other pages. However, they're not entirely relevant and I would like to get some more for my article before the due date! EthanBazos (talk) 02:20, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Ethan, I have a great picture of your fungus and will attach it to your sandbox for you when I get a chance. Medmyco (talk) 21:48, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Question: Books for Setosphaeria rostrata

Hi Professor, Unfortunately I could't find any information on the ecology of Setosphaeria rostrata in most of the books I looked at.-Including Compendium of Soil Fungi which you suggested. I did find a small snippet in the book The ecology of soil fungi-1958, however it refers to the genus Helminthosporium which was used to classify my species in 1923. The book says these pigmented species were in desert sands of dayas, this type of vegetation is found localized in the mobile surface layer of the basin soil and rapidly disappears with depth between 5-10 cm below surface areas. Micromycetes localized in surface layers are easily shifted and dispersed by wind. Is this something I can use even though it does not specifically indicate it is true for S. rostrata. KassF (talk) 20:36, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I know the book. There would be no ambiguity with the identification given the characteristic morphology of the fungus, so I think the reference is credible in this case even though it is old. Btw here is another book reference, in this case on the compounding pharmacy incident: http://books.google.ca/books?id=GjdOAwAAQBAJ&lpg=PA297&dq=exserohilum%20rostratum&pg=PA297#v=onepage&q=exserohilum%20rostratum&f=false Medmyco (talk) 21:47, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

I don't have easy access to most of the sources used for this article, but some of the writing sounds sounds like it could be too closely paraphrased. Some of the material sourced to DoctorFungus is uncomfortably close to the original text, and I suspect it gets worse with the offline sources. Sasata (talk) 08:10, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
