You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs (talk) 03:47, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel Dae Kim's page

[edit]

Max-

Received several reverses to edits made on Daniel Dae Kim's page.

Here's why I deleted the section. Yes, he did get a DUI, but your insistence that that one event be listed as its own section, on the same level as the entirety of his career, as well as personal life, I, for one, find objectionable. For you to repeatedly place that one event as the single most defining aspect of who he is seems unfair. Is the dui more important than his role on LOST, or the awards he has won (of which there are no mentions)? According to the way you'd have his bio page structured, it is. Before you threaten to have people blocked from editing I would humbly suggest you review your organizational priorities. Respectfully, Deepblue357 (talk) 08:56, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Excerpted from the wikipedia NPOV page: Undue weight applies to more than just viewpoints. An article should not give undue weight to any aspects of the subject but should strive to treat each aspect with a weight appropriate to its significance to the subject. For example, discussion of isolated events, criticisms, or news reports about a subject may be verifiable and neutral, but still be disproportionate to their overall significance to the article topic. This is a concern especially in relation to recent events that may be in the news. Note that undue weight can be given in several ways, including, but not limited to, depth of detail, quantity of text, prominence of placement, and juxtaposition of statements. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Deepblue357 (talkcontribs) 09:12, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The only thing I'm insisting on is that you don't blank sections without first discussing it on the talk page. Sound good? MaxVeers (talk) 20:11, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Daniel Dae Kim

[edit]

Agreed. Upon reflection, I don't think the DUI is pertinent enough to his bio page to include it at all actually. It just seems like gossip. I will presume that you disagree though, so here's my proposal: remove the section and add a line under the existing personal life section that mentions it. No need to mention any other actors. That just seems unnecessary and irrelevant. If you're agreeable to that, I can try to write something, or if you feel strongly about it, you can give it the first go. Thoughts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Deepblue357 (talkcontribs) 05:30, 21 June 2010 (UTC) Sorry, forgot to sign it. Deepblue357 (talk) 10:45, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Max-

I'm hoping you will respond to my earlier message, so we can figure out a compromise on the edits we discussed. Can you reply, or propose a change that you find suitable? Thanks.Deepblue357 (talk) 11:04, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for making the change! I'm good with your edits. The only thing I did was reduce the number of references from two to one, since the later article had all the info from the earlier one. Hope that's okay with you. Let me know what you think. Deepblue357 (talk) 00:05, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ProveIt GT account

[edit]

I notice you're listed as the leader of the ProveIt GT team, so I just wanted to make an inquiry.

Is User:ProveIt GT intended to operate as a role account? If so, following precedents such as this, you might want to ask at WP:AN to have it blocked (with e-mail and talk page access allowed), just so there's no potential issue with attribution of contributions (team members ought to only contribute with their own personal accounts). That will still allow centralized contact with your development team, if that was part of the purpose of the account in the first place. Maybe you can create a WP-space page (like WP:Huggle) to contain all of the documentation currently in userspace—in fact, try asking for an uncontroversial move at WP:RM, just to wholly avoid the copy-paste attribution problem. (And maybe this calls for a dummy edit from the real account of whoever wrote the documentation, to claim authorship—like one might do if they accidentally edited while logged out.)

Incidentally, ProveIt GT looks like a useful tool, and I look forward to trying it out for myself. TheFeds 06:21, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think somebody already made ProveIT GT into a role account a while back. Is this not the case? It's in the "Wikipedia contact role accounts" category. MaxVeers (talk) 22:18, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't noticed the category (which isn't a special approval or anything; it's just an identifier). Instead, I'd checked the user contributions page where it usually indicates a block message that says something to the effect of "21:14, 7 March 2008 Coren (talk | contribs) blocked Cambridge CERT (talk | contribs) (autoblock disabled) with an expiry time of indefinite ‎ (Not a user account)". That wasn't there, and the account had contributions, so I just wanted to advise you of the potential issue. Historically, consensus was that there could be problems with GFDL (licence) attributions if role accounts were used (I believe it was because the author could not be identified accurately).
The general rule is that the role accounts can have e-mail/talk page access so that users can get in touch with an organization, without singling out any one contact person; however, the role account is not supposed to be editing (which is reserved for individuals). This usually comes up when a class of students is assigned to edit Wikipedia, and they all log in with one account—but I can appreciate that your situation is a little different, and that you have nothing but the best intentions. If your team would still prefer to continue using the ProveIt GT account, would you mind advising the community of the plan at WP:VPP or a similar forum? That way, there would be no question about what is and isn't permissible, and who knows...if that drives the community to reconsider the state of the current role account guideline, then that might constitute progress in its own right. Proposed deletion of David Sullivan

[edit]

The article David Sullivan (actor) has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. The article Georgia Tech Alumni Association has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Invitation to events: bot, template, and Gadget makers wanted

[edit]

I thought you might want to know about some upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, extending functionality with JavaScript, the future of ResourceLoader and Gadgets, the new Lua templating system, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the Chennai event in March, the Berlin hackathon in June, the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC, or any other of our events.

Provelt contribution for translation

[edit]

Hello Kurt,

I would like to know if you are looking for help to translate ProveIt to French, because I read about a contributor for Finnish. I would be delighted to contribute, as French is my first language, and I may be able to motivate other French contributors to join. I have been editing WP since 2008, both in French and English WP. I have just come to know ProveIt because it's been used on some of my last references editions, such as in [1] Looking forward to hearing from you. --Philippe.petrinko (talk) 14:01, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Soliciting Feedback on Educational Assignment

[edit]

Hello,

My name is Javier Campanini. I'm a student at Cornell University working on a class project for an Online Communities course. Our task is to contribute an article to Wikipedia. There are a total of 3 people on the team and so far, we've started to gather the information and create sections for the article.

The subject of the article is Incentive-Centered Design. The current page (a work in progress) can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Jmc242/incentive-centered_design

We would really appreciate any feedback or comments you could provide on our progress so far.

Requesting a feature to be added to Provelt

[edit]

Dear MaxVeers,

I would like to request a feature. A web citation is becoming increasingly popular, and so is the use of your Provelt, but since websites usually go dead within a few years, even in months, I would like to ask the Provelt team to include boxes for users to add permanent link URLs and archive dates for web citation. I specifically ask for this, because without a suggestion from the citation template or an encouragement from Provelt, people will neglect to archive some links that are prone to link rot. For examples, articles about movies, like Skyfall, or The Matrix, rely heavily on the official announcements from their official websites as sources, but first-party information, like: http://www.skyfall-movie.com/releasedates/ , is prone to disappear shortly after the hype dies. These sites will be there for only as long as it suits the distributors' sales or publicity. And if editors keep following wp:citation templates article, or keep using the current version of Provelt, which is the easier method, contributors will never think to archive some of the first-party sources, because they have no where to put the links in. The refs will be come dead, and by the time they do, active contributors will be long gone, and nobody will care to fix them. The quality of the article will drop only in a few years after the release, and it will become tedious for whoever have to clean it up, especially without Provelt. So... can you add those boxes for editors to add permalinks and archive dates?

Thank you very much. Let me know what you find my suggestion.

Also, I've brought this matter to the community's attention, and am gathering some ideas. If you would like to know more about this matter, please go to [2]. And if you find my concern legitimate and wish to throw me your support, I would really appreciate it. ^^

Regards, Anthonydraco (talk) 16:10, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I am sorry. I've realized that I should've posted this on the Provelt's talk page instead. I will bring this to the talk page instead, but your opinion is appreciated, here or anywhere. Anthonydraco (talk) 16:17, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:FOUR RFC

[edit]

There are two WP:RFCs at WP:FOUR. The first is to conflate issues so as to keep people from expressing meaningful opinions. The second, by me, is claimed to be less than neutral by proponents of the first. Please look at the second one, which I think is much better.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 07:05, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

MaxVeers; I don't mind you undoing any of my edits to GT articles as appropriate, but there is no reason to include comments such as "removing low quality image" when undoing edits. You could have simply stated that you were "removing image" in your edit comment. It is interesting to me that you did not remove the other picture added to that article, even though the other picture was taken on the same day with the same camera. My thought process for adding the picture that you removed was to show the height of Tech Tower within the article and to show the entire front of the building. In my mind, those two pictures go hand in hand. I think you have otherwise done excellent work on Wikipedia, which is why I was surprised by your insolent edit comment. I look forward to working with you in the future. Thanks for your consideration. - Mistercontributer (talk) 20:24, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry you took the edit personally, but I have to strongly disagree with your suggestion. If I'm going to remove somebody's contribution, I'm going to at least provide a brief explanation (e.g. that the image was "low quality", or copyright infringement, or whatever). If anything, I should have been even more specific and referred to the poor composition of the image, which used a low camera angle that distorted the tower's dimensions. (The other image you contributed did not have this problem, so I left it.) In my view, it would have been much more "insolent" to remove an image with no explanation. MaxVeers (talk) 20:46, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying your reasons for removing that image. If you had stated the reason in more detail in the edit summary then I would have understood better. The "low quality" comment obviously struck me the wrong way. Thanks again. - Mistercontributer (talk) 00:58, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I noticed you changed the photos again. This one isn't bad but this one has many of the same problems as the one I removed; the angle is tilted and the lighting makes it hard to read the signage. Would you be willing to remove this one? There are already many photos in the article and it's starting to feel a big cluttered anyway. MaxVeers (talk) 04:39, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I put that picture in the article to show more of the main entrance, which should be included in an article about a building. OK with me to remove the other picture that I added as well if the article appears too cluttered. I uploaded several other pictures if you want to swap out any pictures. In my opinion, this picture is better since it shows more of the building, but it did not fit well under the info box. These pictures are still at a low camera angle, but taken farther away from the building vs. previous image. This article does have a lot of pictures, but most of the pictures focus on the signage and other objects but not the building itself. However, I have come to realize that I am not the right person to address that issue. Hopefully someone more experienced with photography will help. Sorry if I caused any problems, but I was trying to improve this article. - Mistercontributer (talk) 00:43, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Henry W. Wessells, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.civilwarindex.com/Soldiers-W/Wessells.html.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. You may use such publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.) CorenSearchBot (talk) 22:04, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Henry W. Wessells requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.civilwarindex.com/Soldiers-W/Wessells.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
