Wikimania interview
Hi, I'm interested in participating in the interview. --FloNight♥♥♥♥ 08:57, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Fundraising
If I understand your request correctly, that you would like to interview Wikipedians and the results of these interviews may end up in fundraising videos or you may use my photograph and words for the same purpose, I'm probably not your best bet.
If you would like to interview me about something else not associated with fundraising, please let me know what the results of such an interview might be used for. Thanks, and best of luck. --Moni3 (talk) 20:55, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Moni, yes using the interview for fundraising is a correct reading of the request. Thank you for your consideration and I'll be in touch if something else comes up. Best, Matthew (WMF) 21:39, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, well. Now I'm intrigued. What value might my attitude add to your fundraising efforts? In a nutshell: I have devoted a lot of time and effort to writing about 30 articles, some of which get 5,000 hits a day. My writing is read by millions of people. Working with other editors can be immensely satisfying. Also, I still have an overdue library bill for $468 from what I've used to write articles. At the same time, working with editors can be dispiriting and more frustrating than almost anything I've known. I call this a balanced attitude. Others might call it cynical or bitter.
- Also, I'm half a notch above Quasimodo in the "aesthetically pleasing" category. --Moni3 (talk) 21:02, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- See, you make me laugh every time I read your writing. I would imagine it will be nothing if not an entertaining interview. After the interview, if you believe it was worthless, we can leave it in the dustbin. If you'd like to participate, please email me! :) Matthew (WMF) 22:13, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- If Moni's in, how can I say no? Response here. Scartol • Tok 20:20, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

- Hi, I hope this is not a phone interview; I'm happy to do it via IRC though. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 22:28, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- I would prefer phone, but it that's not workable, I can send you questions in a document or by email. Matthew (WMF) 22:43, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- I prefer the latter as it doesn't reveal much of who I am and that it allows me time to recall my past experience and give you accurate answers. Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 22:47, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- Great, can you email me and I'll send you the questions in a doc? mroth (at) wikimedia.org. Cheers, Matthew (WMF) 22:52, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Interview
Hi Matthew, I see you left a message on my talk page yesterday and then erased it, I guess because you noticed I had already had a similar note from Aaron on 23rd Sept. I replied to Aaron via email the same day, and haven't heard anything back yet, so I just wanted to let you know that yes, I am interested in helping WMF out with an interview. And so if Aaron doesn't get back to me, then you are certainly welcome to! Invertzoo (talk) 12:57, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
RE: Interview with Wikimedia Foundation
Hi Matthew, I'd be fine with doing an interview with you to help out with the fundraising, but I do not want my picture, voice, or real-life identity published. If you're fine with not publishing my real-life identity, I'd be happy to help. If you must publish it, then I must regrettably decline. So, if we do a phone interview, I'd be okay with a transcript being published but not the recording. If you prefer an IM or email interview, that works too. OCNative (talk) 00:23, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for considering this, OC. As you suspected, we would want to use your real name and picture if this were to go forward, so we should pass. I hope all is well and best wishes, Matthew (WMF) 00:38, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
- Very well then. Nevertheless, I appreciate the invitation and wish you the best with this project. OCNative (talk) 00:41, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

- Very well then. Nevertheless, I appreciate the invitation and wish you the best with this project. OCNative (talk) 00:41, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Hello, Matthew. Thank you for the invite, but I'd rather keep a low profile and be invisible. I am on wikivacation, anyway. May I suggest you pick a few prolific contributers on Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of DYKs? Or people like Raul654 (talk · contribs) and Howcheng (talk · contribs) who are responsible for many good things on MainPage for the longest time? Hope this helps. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 21:11, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
RE: Interview
Oi Matthew! Vou bem sim, e você? Nice meeting you. Ah, I see, so Invertzoo indicated me. That was very kind of her, but then she is one of the kindest wikipedians I've ever met. It would be a pleasure to help, of course =). Then again, how can I be of help? You've said you wanted to interview me. How can it be done? Best wishes. Daniel Cavallari (talk) 20:42, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks but no thanks
Thanks very much for asking. While I am flattered to be invited, I also cherish my anonymity (the post above yours on my talk page was from someone indef blocked today for threatening editors and telling some of them to hide their real life identities). Since I see above that you would want to use my picture (which I suspect would only scare donors away) and real name, I will have to decline. If I have misunderstood, feel free to contact me again - I would be glad to be interviewed if I can be anonymous. By the way, Daniel Case is an admin and prolific DYK contributor and uses his real name here. Might be someone to contact. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:51, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, you read that correctly and I understand completely. I'm very sorry you've been harassed and hope that does not continue. Thanks very much for the link to Daniel. I'll follow up with him. If there is a format for interviewing and keeping anonymity going forward, I'll get back in touch. Best, Matthew (WMF) 21:30, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- Not a problem. It would probably be better to do this after the weekend ... today I'm making preparations to travel to Washington for this (and I also seem to have terrible allergies; doubtless the effect of all our recent rain). Daniel Case (talk) 15:23, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
- That's great, Daniel. Can you email me so we can work out details? Monday, Tuesday and Friday are good for me next week. mroth (at) wikimedia.org. Best Matthew (WMF) 18:57, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Re: Interview
Hey Matthew! Thanks so much for the invite. I am a strong believer in Wikipedia's mission and ideals, and as much as I would like to express that to those who haven't a clue about how this project works, I strongly value my anonymity here. Also, I don't consider myself an exemplary editor yet. Nonetheless, I hope to participate in something similar in the future once I feel I've done some substantial work here. Good luck with this fundraiser and I look forward to reading many great stories. —Yk Yk Yk talk ~ contrib 00:34, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply Yk Yk Yk. I fully respect your concern about anonymity. Take good care and all best wishes! Matthew (WMF) 18:06, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Decline after consideration
Hi Matthew, after thinking about it I've decided to decline your invitation for an interview for WMF fundraising - initially because of issues with time, but after reading the posts above, I most definitely would not want my name published. I would have suggested Ruhrfisch as a possible interviewee, but I see above that you've already asked him. Anyway, good luck with the storytelling and thanks for asking. Truthkeeper (talk) 18:32, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
- Sure thing, thank you for considering it! All best wishes, Matthew (WMF) 18:50, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Re: interview
Hi Matthew, I thought I'd just drop a note here to say that I enjoyed my interview with you this evening. It was all quite interesting, and entirely pain-free; and as someone who values his privacy, I can't say that I found the questioning intrusive. Anyway, I would certainly say to anyone who's uncertain about accepting a request for an interview, either now or in the future, that they need have no worries about it. (And just for the record, I don't know Matthew, and don't have any connection with the Wikimedia Foundation or anyone associated with it.) Cheers, Andrew Gwilliam (talk) 20:52, 2 November 2011 (UTC).
- Thanks for the note, Andrew. I enjoyed our discussion very much as well. Best Matthew (WMF) 22:23, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi Matthew!
I want to ask if can you send the pictures that you took in November 4th. I want to see all it.
Thanks! Vitor Mazuco Talk! 23:18, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your hard work.
Hello Matthew, I left a similar message on JayWalsh's page..and will say again that I'm afraid to sound corny. I can't imagine the hours of work and the extreme difficulty trying to piece together the hundreds of suggestions and comments that you receive from all of us. Also, the parts that we don't see; the dedication beyond the WP pages to address these Bills...well, thank you for all that you do. You put forward a really clean and easy to understand draft...which is near impossible on an extremely complicated subject. Kudos and Good Luck. Petersontinam (talk) 04:19, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hey thanks so much for that very nice comment, Petersontinam! I really appreciate it and I'm just honored and thrilled to be a part of such an amazing community and project. Seriously, it's hard to call it work ;) Thank you also for everything you do to contribute to Wikipedia and for your candor with this very significant piece of the history here. Wednesday looks like it might be very interesting. Best Matthew (WMF) 05:23, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Headline/structure of landing page
Thank you for all your work on the blackout action. I'm really glad WMF is doing this.
I just posted a note at Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Proposed_Messages#Crucial_copy_editing about what I think was the latest version of the landing-page message. I think the small change I made is crucial for reducing blowback from less sympathetic would-be readers. The headline is different but the content is the same. The basic idea is to make it clear that the blackout is in defense of Wikipedia, not just because Wikipedians don't like the legislation. I understand that the message needs to be a call for action. But the headline needs to do something else. People will react emotionally to a black page where their article should be. The headline needs to start there – with that feeling – and then the message needs to transform that feeling into the action we need them to take.
If I can help by responding to the current version, please do let me know. I wish I'd known about this sooner – I'd have been in touch before now. – Pnm (talk) 22:19, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Matthew! Just in case you ever wake up in the middle of the night with a burning desire to contribute slug and snail articles, and to work alongside of other similarly slime-coated individuals, here is your invitation to WP:GAST...
I've noticed your edits on pages relating to Gastropods; perhaps you'd be interested in joining WikiProject Gastropods? If you would like more information, please visit the project page or the project talk page. |

Four millionth article post
Hi Matthew. Thanks for starting the 4 millionth article article. is it propoer to say article article? I thought by now, people would have been helping develop the article, but unfortunately that's not the case. Anyhoo, I decided to begin a draft of something just to get the ball rolling (see meta:Wikimedia Blog/Drafts/EnWP 4 Million Article Milestone#Draft article). I have no attachment to it, so if it's not what you envisioned then please feel free to start from scratch. Best regards. 64.40.54.45 (talk) 06:54, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hey there friend, thank you for the great edit. I'll work from this for the draft for the blog and I really appreciate you taking the time to do that. Would you like any kind of attribution for doing this work in the byline? If so, please let me know details. You can also email me mrothwikimedia.org. Thanks! Matthew (WMF) 14:08, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
"Would you like any kind of attribution"
Thanks for the kind offer. Nope, I'm just another editor here, so I don't really need any attribution. But I do want to thank you and the other WMF folks for all your hard work and long dedicated hours. I sincerly appreciate what you've done and thank you for your efforts. Kind regards. 64.40.54.156 (talk) 22:23, 12 July 2012 (UTC)- Hello again, Mathew. Looks like my plan fizzled out. I was certain that if people saw an IP writing something, they would jump in to make sure it was written by a registered user. Oh well, the best laid plans of mice and men... as they say. I'll add a few more things to the draft and call it good, just in case you'd like to use any of it.
- Could I change my mind about attribution? If it's possible, I'd like to say something like "An unregistered user helped with the preparation. Unregistered user are also able to contribute to Wikipedia." I'm going to add something to the draft article about the the 500 millionth edit, which was recently made by an unregistered user. Thanks much. 64.40.54.194 (talk) 07:56, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I like that. We'll do attribution the format you suggest. I have a feeling today this is going to get a lot of attention from folks. Thanks! Matthew (WMF) 12:45, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks very much, Mathew. There's some serious article creation happening now, so we should hit 4 million in an hour or so. Thanks again to you and all the WMF folks... for everything. Kind regards. 64.40.54.88 (talk) 13:42, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- thank you very much 64.40.54.88. Happy this got up there and it wouldn't have happened without you. It's posted here, incidentally. Matthew (WMF) 22:08, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

outdent Thanks very much, Mathew. Sorry for the late reply. I was really thankful the Signpost editor came in at the last minute to clean up my rough draft as I was just throwing out ideas hoping it would spark others to contribute. Also, thanks for the way you handled post, mentioning the other articles that were created around the same time. It gave the post a feel of community that I really liked. I must admit I was ho-hum about the whole thing until it got close, then it got exciting watching Special:NewPages. It was really fun at that point. Anyhoo, thanks again for all your help. Kind regards. 64.40.54.25 (talk) 15:25, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thank YOU, my dear IP friend :) I appreciate you starting the ball rolling and getting others excited about it. That was one of the more fun blog drafting processes I've been a part of! I hope you'll consider contributing more on another topic some day, if you're inclined. My proverbial door is always open. Best, Matthew (WMF) 15:29, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Not sending any e-mails today
Sunday anytime is fine, just e-mail me
I'm not sending anybody any e-mails today. My sister may have sent me a virus marked "Private mail"
Please don't open anything marked "private mail". I think I avoided any problems, but she is having major difficulties.
