Pictures for the Bynesian Decay article

[edit]

Howdy to you too Daniel! Yes that's really great! How clever of you to think of that. I was wondering about images and thinking maybe I needed to dig out some of my oldest collection items that have some Bynes going on.

Best, Invertzoo (talk)

Oi Daniel! Tudo bem? My name is Matthew Roth and I'm a Storyteller working on the 2011 fundraiser with the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. In past years, we've relied on Jimbo to carry the bulk of the fundraising weight and he's done very well helping us hit our yearly funding targets. This year, however, we're broadening the scope and reach of the fundraiser by incorporating more voices and different people on the funding banners and appeals that will start running full-time on November 7th. We're testing new messages and finding some really great results with editors and staff members of the Foundation. You can see the current progress of the tests here. I'm curious if you would want to participate in an interview with me as part of this process? The interviews usually last 60 minutes and involve a number of questions about your personal editing experiences, as well as general questions about Wikipedia and its impact in the world. In case you were curious, Invertzoo spoke highly of working with you and recommended I write this inquiry. Please let me know your thoughts by emailing mroth (at) wikimedia.org. Thanks! Hello again

[edit]

Hi Daniel, Wow, so you got to do your interview with Matthew in person, that's so cool! He told me he was going off to Brazil, but I certainly didn't imagine he would be seeing you, otherwise I would have told him, "Say HI to Daniel for me!" I wish I had! What a small world it is. I am OK, but I tore a ligament in my knee a couple months ago, so I am in a brace and doing physical therapy for it. Nontheless I am trying to do more work on Wikipedia than I have done for most of this year. I am currently making some needed genus article stubs to fill in the most noticeable gaps we have, and a few odds and ends of species stubs too. All very best wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 00:23, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Daniel

[edit]

Thank you for the very cool Barnstar!!! I checked our your user page and see you are into curating shell collections like I am. I've been at it most of my life and over the years I started working on a computer database program to help keep things organized. Initially I wrote it in DBase for DOS, but then Windows came along and DBase was bought out and shut down. More recently I got my program updated to run as a stand alone program in a Windows environment. I call it the Shell Collection Database Management Program, but it could really be used for any taxonomic collection from beetles to plants. Check out my user page and the link I have to a shell dealer's site, Sanibel Shellers, who is marketing it for me. The idea is that each family is listed in taxonomic order, and family numbers are assigned to allow the database to list the collection in systematic order by family, then alphabetical order under family by genus, and alpha order under genus by species, etc. Each data record for a specific lot number (assigned by the program beginning with No. 1, then 2, and so on) has fields for family, genus, species, subspecies, author, locality, collector, field data & notes, and an image can be linked as well. To me the most important feature is being able to do searches and reports by any data field, adn being able to print data labels. If you are interested let me know.

I am interested in sea shells from South America, and for a while I had a pen pal I traded with in Argentina. Do you specialize or are you a generalist?Shellnut (talk) 01:09, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Would you look over a new genus article?

[edit]

Hello Daniel. Maybe you are very busy in Real Life (?) but if you have some time, I would like to ask you if you would look over the new cone snail genus article Africonus. It is more or less the same as the similar one Asprella. We want to try to make sure this/these are really in great shape before we use them as a basis for creating another 80 similar ones. Invertzoo (talk) 23:21, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Susan! Yes, I've been really busy as of late, but I still come back here from time to time! Whoa, these articles have a lot of information, that's for sure. Interesting! Cone snails are not my specialty but I'll have a look. Best! Daniel Cavallari (talk) 23:30, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Daniel, I wanted you to look not so much as a cone snail expert but mostly because of all the work you have put into the Good Articles you achieved. I figure you are probably aware of the article guidelines a bit more than I am. For example, 10 different references at the end of the "Significance" section might be too many? There may be other similar things like that. Also the articles need to be very clear. Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 18:14, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Daniel!!! I want to make sure we have a good template first before launching off on an Odyssey into shell taxonomy (as opposed to insanity I guess). Your opinion will be greatly appreciated.Shellnut (talk) 00:24, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! The important thing is to cite the source, keeping a neutral point of view. These are encyclopedic articles, so it's okay to provide information in an impartial manner. Taxonomy based on morphology (shells, but also soft parts) should not be dismissed. Even though molecular studies are likely to modify the taxonomy of the groups, they are all falsifiable hypotheses to be tested, not absolute truths. In an encyclopedic article, it is more than fair that we may present every proposal of classification, in chronological order. I believe it is not our duty here to judge them in any way. Daniel Cavallari (talk) 01:40, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Beautifully put Daniel, yes, it is not our job to put forward an opinion. Invertzoo (talk) 18:14, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Daniel! I have completed more than a few new genus articles, thanks to help from my friends including Invertzoo, JoJan, and yourself. Would you mind giving the newer ones a "look see"? Thanks!Shellnut (talk) 05:38, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Meeting Jose Leal

[edit]

Hello Daniel, I wanted to let you know I met with Jose Leal at B-MSM on Sanibel and gave him some shells from Nevis, one of which (Pitar circinatus) will be on exhibit there as a world record size for the species. I mentioned you to him while I was there, and he said that you were very bright, it seems he was impressed with you. I told him that I had not met you IRL, but that you seemed like a very nice person to me. All good wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 23:02, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Strombus alatus

[edit]

Hello Daniel. I was on the Gulf Coast of Florida for almost two weeks in December during a low tide time and I had the good fortune to spend some time observing colonies of this species live. What an interesting critter it is! I will also have some nice images to upload when I get around to it. If you want to hear more about its behavior, do drop me an email. Slug GA

[edit]

It is a month since I took on the review of this GA. It was not nominated by you and you jumped in to fill the breach when the nominator was not prepared to make any improvements. In my view the article should not have been nominated in the first place as it had too many faults.

I realise that you currently have more pressing concerns with regard to your FAC. My inclination is to fail the Slug GA nomination so I am putting it on hold for a week. If it is not significantly improved in that time I intend to fail it. It can always be renominated at a later date. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:32, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dog conch review

[edit]

Hello Daniel, I think it's going well. Today I see Sasata is back and he has added 4 interesting new suggestions from a literature search he made. He has listed those 4 points at the end of his section of the review. I will let you weigh in on them, because I think I don't know enough about this species or family to be really helpful with these, although... if you are busy fro a few days I will have a go at doing it myself. Great work all round! Invertzoo (talk) 14:21, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, yes, he raised four interesting points... Kind of a challenge to my taxonomic faculties.. Luckily I got my hands on a reference that pretty much solves every problem =)! It will even increase our distribution section! Adding this will close these issues, I think.--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 15:30, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I liked the way you wrote the new part on the genus name, and I only made a few small changes to the prose. I blue linked Abbott, as we have an article about him.

Maybe you could copy and paste that rather good new paragraph into the genus article?

But Sasata had this to say on other aspects of the taxonomy (my emphasis): Invertzoo (talk) 20:22, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • according to the abstract of Raven, Han (2002). "Notes on molluscs from NW Borneo. 1. Stromboidea (Gastropoda, Strombidae, Rostellariidae, Seraphidae)" Vita Malacologica 1:3–32, "Additional evidence is provided for the distinction of Laevistrombus canarium and L. turturella as separate species, suggesting that someone at some time thought they were perhaps conspecific? But neither this, nor its distinction from L. turturella is discussed in the article.
Hey Daniel, I see that WoRMS has an entry for L. turturella in which they list L. isabella as a synonym. That might be a useful? L. turturella does look rather like the dog conch, but obviously WoRMS accepts it as different. Invertzoo (talk) 22:40, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Today I discovered that this is a controversial issue. From what I've seen, Man In 'T Veld & Turck (1997 article from Gloria Maris, which I cited in the article recently) considered L. canarium and L. turturella as distinct (yet sympatric) species, based mainly on shell morphology and a very questionable radular comparison. The shell comparison is rather convincing, though. On the other hand, Cob (article cited in the synonyms ref) did a review of some strombus species in 2009... He examined shell and anatomical characters, chiefly genitalia, operculum and radula, and he kept turturella as synonym of canarium. The logical conclusion is that he didn't find significant differences between them in that regard. He noted for example that the radula varies widely so it could not be used as comparative character (this is knonw for a fact, quite obvious anyway). The sample he analyzed was quite large. WoRMS is following Man In 'T Veld & Turck (I was told thar by Gijs Kronenberg, from NBC Naturalis, Leiden). We have two choices here. If we follow Cob, which is the latest published review, we must consider turturella as synonyms, thus denying WoRMS in that matter. We would have to merge the articles, too... If we follow Man In 'T Veld & Turck, we'll have to change the taxobox picture (it's a specimen of turturella, by their definition), and rewrite a good deal of text throughout... A third option would be dealing with the matter from a neutral point of view, only exposing the controversy, without following any party. I really don't know what to do here =/ --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 23:45, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We could try to be neutral and explain both points of view, but it's going to create a lot of extra verbiage. I suppose that can't be helped. Invertzoo (talk) 16:05, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I get the impression from the abstract of Dekkers, Aart M. (2008). "Revision of the family Strombidae (Gastropoda) on the supra specific level, part one" Kreukel (Amsterdam) 44 (3-4): 35–64, that L. canaries was designated the type species of a new subtribe Canariini, but this is not discussed (or mentioned) in the article.
  • any luck finding out about subspecies guido? I have the article citation, if that helps at all.
  • there may be more distribution information not convered in the article available here: Subba Rao, N. V. (1970). "On the collection of Strombidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) from Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and western Indian Ocean with some new records. 1. Genus-Strombus" J Mar Biol Ass India 12:109–124. Sasata (talk) 01:58, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

...Daniel, i am typing this lying flat on my back as I threw my back out and can't work normally right now. Otherwise I would do more. Invertzoo (talk) 20:29, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ouch Susan!!! Dear god, are you alright over there? o_O --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 02:01, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am getting better thanks Daniel. I saw my osteopath yesterday and he put my sacroiliac joint back the way it's supposed to be. (I have joints that are unusually mobile; the sacroiliac moves more than it is supposed to and sometimes goes out of alignment). Now I just have to wait for the muscles to calm down as it was out for about 2 days and my muscles did not like that at all! Yesterday I could hardly stand up or walk. I will be OK in a few days. :) Invertzoo (talk) 16:05, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dog conch continued

[edit]

I just now made a stub for Laevistrombus turturella (Röding, 1798) , based on the WoRMS entry, because I thought it would be helpful to have a blue link for that taxon, as Strombus isabella Lamarck, 1822, is a junior synonym. Invertzoo (talk) 16:57, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Strombus info

[edit]

Today I said yes to a connection on LinkedIn with Gijs Kronenberg, who is a Netherlands malacologist who has written extensively about Strombidae, see:

http://www.stromboidea.de/?n=People.GijsKronenberg

It occurred to me that we could ask him about that "De Kreukel" article "Dekkers, Aart M. (2008). "Revision of the family Strombidae (Gastropoda) on the supra specific level, part one" Kreukel (Amsterdam) 44 (3-4): 35–64. Maybe he would know about that attempt to create a subtribe Canariini? I could ask him anyway? Invertzoo (talk) 22:09, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I just now sent him a message via LinkedIn. I will let you know if he responds. Invertzoo (talk) 22:25, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, now I see you already wrote to him! Oh well... maybe he will be nice enough to help us. Invertzoo (talk) 00:23, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Susan! Are you better? Gijs is a terrific guy =)! Don't miss the opportunity to speak to him!--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 00:42, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes my back is doing much better now, almost OK. I am glad to have Gijs as a contact! I am very happy he decided to ask me to link with him. Daniel, have you thought about putting yourself up on LinkedIn? I am up there. Invertzoo (talk) 01:47, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why not? Never heard about it, but if it's your recommendation, then it must be cool =)!--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 02:00, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am perfectly happy to take the explanation you wrote to me and fix it up to read well, put it back on here and let you put inline citations into it and then insert it into the article?

I mean this explanation:

this is a controversial issue. From what I've seen, Man In 'T Veld & Turck (1997 article from Gloria Maris, which I cited in the article recently) considered L. canarium and L. turturella as distinct (yet sympatric) species, based mainly on shell morphology and a very questionable radular comparison. WoRMS is following Man In 'T Veld & Turck (I was told thar by Gijs Kronenberg, from NBC Naturalis, Leiden). We have two choices here. A third option would be dealing with the matter from a neutral point of view, only exposing the controversy, without following any party.

Invertzoo (talk) 01:52, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This would be perfect! Also, I expanded the distribution section a little bit, based on Gloria Maris vol 36. Please check the prose, Susan. I'm very worried about destroying Miniapolis' awesome work...--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 01:57, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I did this very fast, and should probably look at it again tomorrow, but how about something like this:

There is some disagreement in the literature as to whether or not this species and the taxon Laevistrombus turturella are actually separate species. Man In 't Veld & Turck (1998) considered that L. canarium and L. turturella are distinct (yet sympatric) species, based mainly on the shell morphology and a radula comparison. However, when Cob reviewed a number of Strombus species in 2009, examining both the shell characters and other anatomical characters (including details of the genitalia, operculum and radula), he was of the opinion that L. turturella was simply a synonym of L. canarium.

We could even add something like:

The online database World Register of Marine Species (L. turturella entry was specifically edited by Philippe Bouchet 2011-03-23) follows Man In 't Veld & Turck' s opinion rather than that of Cob.

I am currently trying to fix up the distribution part. I am sure we could get another fast copyedit from Miniapolis if we asked nicely! Invertzoo (talk) 02:11, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Got to go to bed now, I have a cold on top of everything else! Invertzoo (talk) 02:20, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Version 2

[edit]

Maybe like this?

There has been some disagreement in the literature as to whether or not this taxon and the similar taxon Laevistrombus turturella are separate species. Man In 't Veld & Turck (1998) considered that L. canarium and L. turturella are distinct (yet sympatric) species, based mainly on the shell morphology and a radula comparison. However when Cob reviewed a number of Strombus species in 2009, examining both the shell characters and other anatomical characters (including details of the genitalia, operculum and radula), he was of the opinion that L. turturella was simply a synonym of L. canarium. In 2011, Philippe Bouchet editing the online database World Register of Marine Species chose to follow Man In 't Veld & Turck' s opinion rather than that of Cob.

Invertzoo (talk) 16:34, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oh... I see you have already added it in. But do you think a mention of Bouchet's 2011 WoRMS opinion would be OK or not? He is after all one of the world's leading taxonomists. And it sort of explains indirectly why "we" have sided with them being separate species.

In 2011, Philippe Bouchet, editing the online database World Register of Marine Species, chose to follow Man In 't Veld & Turck' s opinion rather than that of Cob. Invertzoo (talk) 16:57, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If Sasata thinks we should explain why we have sided with them being separate species (he probably will), then we must add it, I think...--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 17:29, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I agree. Invertzoo (talk) 01:28, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Did you get the new email from Gijs with a more complete synonymy? Can we use it or would it be OR? Invertzoo (talk) 13:25, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No I didn't! Unfortunately we can't make use of any information that isn't published, I'm afraid... =/ any unpublished taxonomic opinion would be OR! Even if it comes from a specialist...--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 13:31, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I will check with Gijs to see if it has been published anywhere. Invertzoo (talk) 15:33, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I just forwarded all of the relevant emails to you. Invertzoo (talk) 02:16, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About closing the FA nomination?

[edit]

I wonder whether it is necessary for User:SandyGeorgia to actually state specifically that she now supports the article, rather than just striking her nope? Everyone else's reviews say support. I don't want to sort-of bother anyone about this, so maybe I should just wait and see what happens. Never having done this before I don't know what is normal. Invertzoo (talk) 23:35, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Neither do I, but the Featured Article review guidelines had something about the most important thing being that every comment gets proper attention, rather than stating the support... Perhaps this is User:SandyGeorgia's way of thinking...--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 10:37, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I see, yes that makes sense. Invertzoo (talk) 21:34, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You got it!

Greetings Daniel, as you may know, lately I have been creating articles on genera and species of the Eulimidae family of gastropods along with working towards improving the Pyramidellidae articles Ganeshbot created back in late 2011. I started with my first article in the Eulimidae family being Acrochalix which I created on 20 December 2012 and up until now I have created over 200 other articles related, I am currently up to the major Eulima genus of Eulimidae and I have been working towards completing the species in that genus (along with the help of another user, Christopholes). Today, I revised on some of the earlier articles I had created around Christmas time and stumbled across Apicalia chuni, an article I had created on 22 December 2012. I searched this species in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and realized that Apicalia chuni is actually in fact a Species Inquirenda and not a standard taxonomic species (can be found here). Because of this disastrous mistake I have made, I have decided that it is probably best to delete this article completely. Although I just thought I would discuss this action with another member of Wikiproject Gastropods before I go ahead with it entirely. Do you think that the deletion of this article could possibly be declined or maybe it should just stay as it is? Please let me know your opinion. Thank you, take care!

P.S. Congratulations on the WikiProjects first GA, I am proud the project could accomplish this! The whimsical enigmatic Solo Toady! 10:22, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Toady! Thanks for the compliment. Oh it was no easy task. A bit too hard, maybe. Can anyone who doesn't have access to a top notch scientific library do that? I wonder... I wouldn't be able to do it if I wasn't a specialist myself. Anyway, don't worry. You were not wrong to begin with, and I don't think you need to delete the article. Let's see things from my point of view: species inquirenda is a transitory status. It means further study is necessary to determine its identity - but nothing has been decided. Will it be a nomen nudum? Will it be considered a valid name? No one knows for now. I would keep the article as it is, except for an observation about it's species inquirenda status. If it becomes an invalid name in the future, then you may think about deleting or moving it, IMHO. Best wishes! --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 22:12, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you very much for letting me know on your opinion, I shall leave the article as it is and just resume with my work. Happy editing! The whimsical enigmatic Solo Toady! 03:32, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Better shell images for Lobatus gigas

[edit]

Hello Daniel, I am trying to get the five-view image of the shell de-listed as a featured picture, because the lip of the shell has been filed or cut and therefore the image is very misleading in that area. See this delist nomination: gigas 01.jpg. You will see that I have also included there these same thumbnails of two images that show the intact lip really well. Maybe one of them should be added to the article, but where? I believe it would be good to take the 5-view image out of the article, what do you think? Invertzoo (talk) 13:34, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm I see. Well, the picture can be misleading, but it is still informative. Perhaps we should add a note to the caption. Moreover, a new picture (one of these two you've shown) should include a note about the lip in the caption as well. Something like " Specimen ...blah blah blah... with an intact outer lip" ? --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 19:04, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. However I was concerned that we might end up with too many shell images overall. What do you think? I was also not sure where to fit another image in. Invertzoo (talk) 01:03, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Check it out. I put one in; do you think it all looks OK? Invertzoo (talk) 01:08, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good =)! --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 13:09, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:A live individual of Zospeum tholussum.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:A live individual of Zospeum tholussum.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or

You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. Happy Holidays

Happy solstice-related (aka winter-in-the-Northern Hemisphere) holiday(s)!
To my very good Wikipedia friend, I wish you a joyful "winter in the northern hemisphere holiday" or "northern solstice day(s) in the southern hemisphere holiday", whichever of the holiday or holidays you celebrate (all or any)! Invertzoo (talk) 19:42, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Much appreciated, Miniapolis! You did a great job, as always. The article reads smoothly! --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 17:03, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Aw, thanks. Good luck and all the best, Miniapolis 01:22, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel, the thorough copyedit was a very nice improvement to the article, but there are one or two places where the copyeditor may perhaps have accidentally changed the meaning just a little bit. Under Collections, Fish, it now reads, "With the establishment of graduate programs and Brazilian research, the collection continues to grow.[3]", but perhaps you meant to say that the graduate students themselves had done a lot of the research and collecting? I am not sure... If not, then it should at least say "more Brazilian research", or "more research on the Brazilian fauna", or something like that, right? Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 17:16, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User:Invertzoo! Actually, I like his phrasing. It is indeed closer to what I meant to say.--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 12:11, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Me again, in the queen conch article under Human uses, I took the liberty of adding another image (although maybe there are too many already): a nice 1902 painting which features the shell of this species. Please remove it if you think it is too much. Best, Invertzoo (talk) 17:19, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks great! This image has an "encyclopedic feeling" to it... It kinda helps demonstrate how humans interacted with the species over the course of time... I find it very fitting! --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 12:03, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think I got your paper... but I need to search my desktop because I don't remember reading it. Perhaps you could send it to me again? More about Hipponix

[edit]

Hello Daniel, I have been searching various beaches and have been picking up all the Hipponix I can find for you. The shells are mostly rather beach-worn, but I suppose having a large number of them will be useful in order to show the variation within the species in terms of size shape and color. I currently have probably over a hundred of the most common species: (names may not be correct) H. subrufus; probably about 40 of H. antiquatus/leptus; right now only two H. incurvus; and one damaged H. costellatus. I will be out looking around for another 14 days. Email me on my home email about this. Invertzoo (talk) 18:24, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have also co-authored the redescription of Solatisonax cabrali, and revision of the genus Teralatirus, among many other things. There are many more papers to come in the near future! Yes, this deserves an explanation. It's actually related to scattered populations identified under the same name. Their results indicate there are actually more species than initially thought, or so I think. A tag has been placed on File:JGS cover61.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a file licensed as "for non-commercial use only", "no derivative use", "for Wikipedia use only", or "used with permission"; and it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag and if necessary, a complete fair use rationale.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. funplussmart (talk) 23:59, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Journal of Geek Studies for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Journal of Geek Studies is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Journal of Geek Studies (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Largoplazo (talk) 02:35, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Journal of Geek Studies requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Ampullariidae, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Diversification. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:07, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Ancistrobasis reticulata into Ancistrobasis costulata. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 14:16, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your concern, but the text is almost entirely verbatim from a 19th century work, and I still need to carefully check that the text is 100% true to the original work (it appears to be). Unfortunately, I don't have time to check this right away, and it could take a few days. Furthermore, I think it is pertinent to state here that the text was not simply copied, but transferred because the content no longer refers to the object of the original article, due to taxonomic changes. In the case of old work, which is in the public domain, is there really a need for more copyright measures beyond simply citing it in the refs? Thank you. Daniel Cavallari (talk) 11:51, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to citing in the refs, when copying from a public domain work, it's important to provide attribution. To do this, simply add the template {{PD-notice}} after your citation. Please do this in the future so that our readers will be aware that you copied the prose rather than wrote it yourself, and that it's okay to copy verbatim. — Diannaa (talk) 14:41, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's more information on this topic at Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing, specifically at Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing#When is close paraphrasing permitted?. — Diannaa (talk) 15:00, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
