Station editing - Passeneger volume and article improvements

Hi Matt Merry Christmas just wondering if along with the passenger volume tables additions we should include the main origin or destination station for the 2022/23 period from the ORR estimates of station usage for each station.

Best wishes, James JamesVilla44 (talk) 21:22, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi JamesVilla44, can I ask what you mean by that? I'm not sure I could ascertain that information from the ORR data if I understand you correctly. Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 21:23, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
https://dataportal.orr.gov.uk/statistics/usage/estimates-of-station-usage
It shows the Number of journeys to or from main origin destination for each station in the far right column JamesVilla44 (talk) 21:25, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that. Unfortunately I can't get it to work for the stations I select (it might just be me, though! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
I won't opt to use it personally, but if you wanted to add it in when I add (sometimes re-add) the tables, if you can get it to work, you'd be more than welcome. Saying that, it would ideally be in prose above the table, as they are getting rather large now!
Merry Christmas to yourself as well. Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 21:33, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi JamesVilla44, re. some of the removals of these paragraphs, I've reverted two but only the ones where the table has been deleted. I would encourage you, when adding these paragraphs to add the table as well (unfortunately I can't get round the whole country that quick, so your help is very much appreciated!). Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 08:32, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

What do we do about Maurice Oly removing them though? Do you think they’ll just find our edit summaries sufficient and not attempt an edit war? JamesVilla44 (talk) 09:26, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Probably, I don't think he would care so much as to battle it out...! Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 09:55, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
So your preferred order is
    • Platforms
    • Passenger volume
    • Services
? JamesVilla44 (talk) 10:10, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, although not always will a "platforms" section be necessary (e.g., Altnabreac railway station). Services should always be last in any case with the service box there, but - IMO - with the exception of "Cultural references"/"Future proposals". Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 10:15, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
See User:Mattdaviesfsic/Station editing Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 10:22, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Do you think the information in section ===Access for disabled passengers=== in Gravelly Hill, Erdington, Chester Road and Wylde Greeen is a good addition and well sourced? JamesVilla44 (talk) 11:19, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
I've demonstrated a possibility at Erdington railway station of one possibility, which is what I would probably do. Use National Rail (and the station map, which is at the bottom of the page - e.g., for Erdington to include other facilities in its own section.
I could probably add similar information like that in the articles I've been working on in the Highlands as well, to be fair! Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 11:29, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Amakuru, an admin is now getting involved, that might be tough to deal with. Some of the ones like Kidsgrove might be fine though. I do think you’re eventually going to have to discuss the merit of your station edits on a talk page. And Maurice is indeed starting an edit war (See: Congleton, Macclesfield, Stockport) JamesVilla44 (talk) 13:02, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Amakuru has only reverted one, which is kind of a relief. However, his WP:NOTSTATS point is very fair - by that, policy says that tables of stats should have explanatory data, like at Kinbrace railway station. Hence that's not much of an issue, and I've finally worked out how to get that data on the website. Hopefully I can update most of them over the next few days.
I see you've posted on Maurice's talk page, I'm already watching his page so I can contribute if needed. Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 13:35, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
And Maurice has removed the tables from Kidsgrove and Chester Road.
Looks like you’ve got a job to do on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways then, best of luck. JamesVilla44 (talk) 13:51, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Posted Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 13:55, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi James, re. the "Platforms" sections, I only tend to add these for stations with 4+ platforms, so for stations like Erdington railway station, I'd probably agree with Maurice that it probably isn't too necessary (unless it's very brief in the service section). Of course, it would need to be cited as well, but I'm not sure of a site that would support that information either tbh. Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 14:01, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Actually, the Network Rail Sectional Appendices could help here. E.g., this document, on page 922, verifies the platform numbers at Inverness...
I note this information is only readily available for the larger stations, as I say, but it is certainly reliable, no doubt about it... Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 14:08, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Your close at Talk:Waka Kotahi

Kia ora, just wanting to check in to question your close of this move request. In your close, you admit that WP:TOOSOON applies but seem to have ignored it. Several of the users in support of the move have also echoed sentiments about how the new government has directed that agencies need to be at the English name and that we should follow suit, which doesn't seem like an argument that should hold any sway in move requests on wikipedia. Between those (and the equal number of users in favour and opposed), I'm curious as to how you can reach the view that a move is the appropriate outcome. Turnagra (talk) 08:36, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Having looked at it again, I may have misunderstood the premise of the move. I've reverted my closure so someone else can take another look at it. Apologies for the mistake. Thumbs up icon Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 09:05, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
No worries, appreciate the reversion! Have a good night (or whatever it is in your timezone!) Turnagra (talk) 09:07, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Regarding your comment "Not necessary" a edit revert in "Gambino crime family"

Thank you for your feedback regard my edit, however I disagree with your statement "Not necessary". You have not elaborated why its unnecessary, which I believe doesn't follow Wikipedia etiquette and denotes you are acting in bad faith.

Let me explain why dollars after the numeric representation is redundant.

Please read this this statement in your mind: "$100 dollars" Once you read it, it should be "one hundred dollars dollars" This is redundant.

Instead, it should be: "$100" Once you read it, it should be "one hundred dollars"

The phenomenon where I am referring to is where redundant information is omitted for the sake of brevity and clarity, is related to the principles of conciseness and economy of language in writing. It's a component of good writing style and falls under the broader umbrella of effective communication.

Refer to the Wikipedia article "Concision" to further understand linguistics, brevity and clarity in the English language:

"In common usage and linguistics, concision (also called conciseness, succinctness, brevity, or laconicism) is a communication principle of eliminating redundancy, such as using as few words as possible in a sentence while preserving its meaning. More generally, it is achieved through the omission of parts that impart information that was already given, that is obvious or that is irrelevant."

Therefore, I ask you to consider my point. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gambino_crime_family&action=history Gameking69 (talk) 02:02, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Apologies, Gameking69. I misread it as that you were trying to add the dollars, rather than remove it. I've reverted the edit now. Thanks for letting me know, and sorry about that once again! Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 06:04, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Page mover granted

Hello, Mattdaviesfsic. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Please remember the advice given at User talk:Mattdaviesfsic/Archive 6#Draftifications. Moving old articles to draft space, where they will get auto-deleted in 180 days, amounts to an out-of-process deletion. If you have any questions about this, please ask. – bradv 04:17, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
