Villiers Club

Is there a way of viewing the text of this article pre-deletion? This appears to be the only reference on the web, and I was hoping to find a little more information on this society, the name of which has come up in some research I am engaged in. Cursitor (talk) 13:38, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

There really wasn't much too the article prior to its deletion. No sources were cited, which was largely the reason it was deleted. Any information that was contained there is not verifiable by wikipedia standards. I don't think it would be a good idea to trust this as a source for research. That stated, below is essentially the articles contents. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 21:25, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
The Villiers Club is an exclusive intellectual debating and dining society at Oxford University, famous for prestigious speakers and the length of its debates. It meets termly in various Senior Common Rooms of the University's colleges, usually in groups of between 18 and 25 members and guests, all of whom wear White Tie (evening dress). It is also known for its annual garden party. The Club is dedicated to the sacred memory of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, for whom a place is left at dinner and filled with an etching by Edward Lascenses, which was originally given by the founder. Various Latin prayers and graces are said. The symbol or motif of the Club is a single red rose book-ended by the letters "C V".

Hello, you appear to have accused me of vandalising this page:

I assume that this accusation is based on my IP address. Whoever edited the page must have spoofed his/her IP. Vandalism of any kind is hardly my style. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.110.138.241 (talk) 23:46, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Update - it would appear on checking the edit history for this IP address that the offending edit was back in February. Since ISPs typically assign IP addresses from a pool each time a user connects, it's extremely unlikely that the same user will be using a given IP address after such a long time. I would therefore question the utility of the kind of warning message that I was alarmed to see on innocently visiting the Wikipedia homepage tonight to read up on Elvis. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.110.138.241 (talk) 23:56, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Someone using that IP address was vandalizing. If it wasn't you, then don't worry about it. You might want to look into creating an account. It might help avoid being blocked in the future. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 22:17, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Plastilina Mosh cdcover3.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Plastilina Mosh cdcover3.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 03:45, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Marcinko Photo

The Tag for Public Domain has been in place for 2+ years. What else do you need?--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 23:31, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Why does it have to be something I need? The image needs to have a source. It needs this source in order to validate its license. Please don't take it personally, I'm just trying to do things by the book. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 00:17, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Not taking it personal, the source is the United States Department of Defense.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 00:29, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

How do you know it is a DOD photo? -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 04:11, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Every publication that uses it says Source:DoD. Have you never served or seen a US Military file photo?--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 06:04, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

I have worked extensively upon US Navy ship articles, I am familiar with DOD photos. Please cite any of the publications that have this photo. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 10:05, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
The Rogue Warrior Biography for starters:Rogue Warrior (1992) (with John Weisman) ISBN 0-671-70390-0. page 149 or so. When he had SEAL 2 as his command that was the picture that hung on the wall at Little Creek. It has also appeared in articles in Navy Times and SOF; that actual photo came from Military.com, but the original page is gone. If you make it to a used book store flip to the center of the book in question and it's captioned "Official File Photo US Navy". If this doesn't meet the criteria I'll get a picture of him or from him when I see him in a few weeks.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 12:20, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Mike, this is great. I don't have that book, but I'll take your word for it. I have listed this information on the image source and on the commons image as well. Just so you know File:RichardMarcinkoBW.jpg will soon be removed from wikipedia since it was moved to Wikimedia Commons under the name File:Richard Marcinko.jpg. Thanks -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 21:05, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, I wasn't sure what you meant at first, sometimes it takes a while for me to "get something". :) --Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 21:53, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Article KCBS-TV

If in fact the logo gallery within this article is unacceptable or unusable, I, only an occasional contributor and certainly not Wiki-savvy, am curious to know why. I bring this matter to you because a quick perusal of you user and talk pages shows that you are a dedicated and principled editor and administrator. In looking at the article's revision history user J Milburn seems to be the editor that made this decision. Certainly many other television station articles in various markets have their logo galleries intact, and within these articles there are images photographs, and screenshots that have existed for some time. I don't know anything about image use, and I'm wondering what is and isn't legitimate. I had been thinking about adding images to other articles. Thank you. Lantana11 (talk) 07:25, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Lantana11Lantana11 (talk) 07:25, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Please review Wikipedia:Image use policy, in particular the section on Fair use images and Image galleries. Basically the problem lies in the fact that these are fair use images. As a result they cannot be used freely as we see fit. Instead they can only be used in articles in a limited way. One of these requirements in fair use is to provide a rational for this images use. With a reasonable rational, the image doesn't really compile with the fair use license that accompanies it. Also the fact is that Wikipedia frowns upon non-free images. I'm sure that other articles with lots of fair use images will also likely have the majority of them removed. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 20:38, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you very much; I will read the image-use poliices closely and attempt to wrap my mind around it! Cheers, Nick —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lantana11 (talkcontribs) 21:45, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I NEED YOUR HELP!!! omg =(

Explicit is yet again trying to take off another one of the screenshots I have posted - which complies just fine with Wikipedia's rules and regulations. He has put tags on the screenshots I have posted for She Ain't Got... and We Break the Dawn. He ALWAYS does this to me and I don't understand why. I feel like I am being targeted by him maliciously and it's really starting to annoy me. Everything I post he tries to tag and remove some how. JonathanLGardner (talk) 12:52, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Fair use images can only be used in a limited and restricted way on Wikipedia. Basically the minimal number of unfree images required to identify a topic is usually favored. Since there is likely no free images of these topics, one image is probably all the more that will be tolerated. Please don't take other's actions personally, I know that this user, Explicit, is tagging a lot of fair use images lately. Please review Wikipedia:Non-free content, you'll see that the policy section 2 part A requires a minimalist use of such pictures. Also you should be aware that if you're uploading a fair use image you really should make sure it has low resolution, otherwise it may infringe upon the copyright holder. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 13:09, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I am trying to source an original photo for Nick Euclid. If I am succesful in obtaining one from his wife or daighters, how do I establish its copyright so that Wikipedia approves of it? Regards, Jim Sealpoint33 (talk) 02:08, 21 August 2009 (UTC) (sealpoint33) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sealpoint33 (talkcontribs) 02:06, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Basically, the best means for adding an image to wikipedia is to find a free image. That means that whoever owns that image allows for other people to use that image freely, and to be able to make adaptations or derivations of the original. You could use a non-free image but I would not recommend it. I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Image use policy. You need to cite a source and the owner should choose a proper free license, (Public domain, GDFL, or Creative Commons, any will do). Once it is posted, let me know where that image is and I will try to work with you to make sure it is alright. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 03:30, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I am trying to figure out how I can obtain the proper copyrights of the photos. I obtained the pictures from supermodels.nl site and from variety.com. What do I need to do to obtain proper copyrights? Rumination (talk) 17:19, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

First, you need to add a license for the images you upload. You also need to have a source. The license depends on who owns the copyright to the image. If you are finding images on the sites you mentioned above, these images would be whats called Fair use, see Wikipedia:Non-free content. You should read that carefully. Fairuse images have many restrictions and are generally frowned upon. Free licensed images are greatly preferred however in many instances they are more difficult to come by. Also if you use a fair use license, you must also give a rationale as to why this image is being used on the article it is on. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 22:53, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm glad you like it. When it seems like I'm the only one attacking that backlog, sometimes it feels sort of hopeless. The tool's helped to take a sizable chunk out of it though, which makes me happy. Have fun! RandomStringOfCharacters (talk) 02:49, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

New Image Reszier Version

It's up on the google code page. I thought you might like to know, as it's even more streamlined, and reliable! RandomStringOfCharacters (talk) 20:10, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

New tool for deleting resized images

Hi! I've created a user script to help with deleting resized non-free images. Basically, when installed, a new tab labeled "Rescaled" is added to each image page. Clicking this button A) Deletes all revisions of the image other than the current one, and B) removes Non-free reduced from the page. It isn't very elegant right now (there's no status display or anything; once you click the button the page doesn't seem to do anything for a little while before it jumps into edit mode and then saves the page). Additionally, clicking the button by accident will cause it to run on any image page. But, since I saw that you were working in the reduced-image-deletion area a little, I thought I'd mention it. It isn't fully documented yet (and I haven't tested it for Internet Explorer), but you should be able to use it by adding

importScript('User:Drilnoth/delresized.js');

to your monobook.js page, assuming that you use the default monobook skin. If you try it out and encounter any bugs, please let me know! –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 03:08, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for posting this to my page. I find your script very useful. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 18:40, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Arslan10.JPG

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Arslan10.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? feydey (talk) 10:44, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

re: GDI+ crash

I've noticed that sometimes images will have this problem. It seems at best random to me. I've only encountered this once myself, and during my testing I lost the image, because it worked properly on my other computer. For instance, your image doesn't give me a problem currently.

I am curious though, are you experiencing any troubles with images actually uploading properly? For instance, no matter what image, I get a wikipedia error talking about a file with the same name existing on commons. RandomStringOfCharacters (talk) 19:19, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

No I haven't seen that error. Most everything seems to upload fine for me. Sometimes when it asks if the image has uploaded correctly, I can't see the image, and I get a broken image link, but once the page refreshes, the new image is there and it looks fine. Any chance I can see the code? -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 19:24, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I've been lazy about updating the code on the google code page haven't I? Mainly because I haven't done some cleaning after some experimenting, but I'll go upload it right now. (In fact, I did it between writing everything not in this parenthetical statement, and this parenthetical statement. The updated source download is already there.) Image resizing

Hi

I see you have added a 'reduce' tag to File:CompletePlainWords5thImpresson1958.jpg. The file is currently 200dpi, what should I reduce it to?  pablohablo. 09:02, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Since this is a non-free image, it is generally recommended that the width/length dimensions not exceed 400 pixels. It is not necessarily a matter of dpi, but more-so of resolution. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 21:07, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Okay then. Well I have reduced it as much as I am going to, anyone else can have at it as they will. It's a book cover of quite a large book (by modern standards), it's clearly unsuitable for litho (which would be necessary if anyone wanted to produce a credible fake) and it dates from pre-1958 so copyright has probably expired anyway but hell, if anyone else wants to reduce the quality let them.  pablohablo. 22:10, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Re: AIV

I understand the decision to remove it from the noticeboard, but, as I go to the school, nobody edits Wikipedia to contribute constructively, and vandalize just for the fun of it. There was a block prior to May 2009, and I think it did good. Can't it be blocked to just prevent vandalism in the future, as the school year has started? Connormah (talk) 04:16, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Generally it is not a good idea to preemptively block IPs. I will continue to watch Special:Contributions/199.185.67.200 and if it continues to be a problem, I will block it. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 15:14, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of File:Ripcord.jpg

Hi, could you please undelete this image. When you deleted it it had just been reinstated so I could add a non-free use tag to it. See here. Thanks.--Ridge Runner (talk) 02:01, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I have restored the image. I have also updated the no license tag for one more week. Feel free to remove the no license tag once an appropriate license has been added.-- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 02:10, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. lol --Ridge Runner (talk) 02:20, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Robert Key's image ....

Which I posted on his wiki has been deleted by you. What was the problem with it? I know you're busy but it would have been nice to see your reason. I do have permission, from him directly, to use this image and he understands what GPL means! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Spielberg (talkcontribs) 00:27, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

I deleted the image because it was listed under a fairuse license and another user nominated the file to be deleted on the grounds that a freely licensed image could likely be found to be used in its place. I just noticed that the user that nominated the file never left you a message on your talk page. Which they should have done. Given that you didn't know about this, I could restore this image. But there are no guarantees that it won't be deleted again by another admin. I can restore it if you'd like, however I suggest that if you do have direct permission from the copyright holder to use this image under a free license, that you upload the file to commons send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and follow the instructions at Commons:OTRS. This way all the wikimedia projects can use this file, and if the permission is confirmed it is very unlikely that the image would be deleted later. Let me know if I can be of assistance. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 21:41, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your help malo. The picture is working its' way thru' permissions. Spielberg (talk) 16:22, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

My El maxo article

You have deleted a page I made entitled "El maxo" (no quotes in the actual article title). Can you please make it so that I can view it again. I put a lot of work and time into that article and it would be awful for me if I can never view it again. You don't even have to put it up as an actual article. I just want to have it so that I can at least have it for myself. Please respond to this and help me out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Malparel123 (talkcontribs) 16:25, 13 October 2009

I'll move it to your userpage, in the future please don't create such things in the article namespace. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 21:23, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
On second thought, it appears that your article is actually attacking another person. I don't think it's right to restore it. -- malo (tlk) (cntrbtns) 21:26, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

It may appear that way but it is not attacking another person because El Maxo is not real. So please restore that article or at least make it so I can have it. Max Parelius 00:59, 14 October 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Malparel123 (talkcontribs)
