Administrators' newsletter – August 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2022).
- An RfC has been closed with consensus to add javascript that will show edit notices for editors editing via a mobile device. This only works for users using a mobile browser, so iOS app editors will still not be able to see edit notices.
- An RfC has been closed with the consensus that train stations are not inherently notable.
- The Wikimania 2022 Hackathon will take place virtually from 11 August to 14 August.
- Administrators will now see links on user pages for "Change block" and "Unblock user" instead of just "Block user" if the user is already blocked. (T308570)
- The arbitration case request Geschichte has been automatically closed after a 3 month suspension of the case.
- You can vote for candidates in the 2022 Board of Trustees elections from 16 August to 30 August. Two community elected seats are up for election.
- Wikimania 2022 is taking place virtually from 11 August to 14 August. The schedule for wikimania is listed here. There are also a number of in-person events associated with Wikimania around the world.
- Tech tip: When revision-deleting on desktop, hold ⇧ Shift between clicking two checkboxes to select every box in that range.
Pascal Groß
Hi there, I noticed that you recently re-protected the wiki page for Brighton & Hove Albion following the vandalism edits once again. The Pascal Groß page has also been vandalised a lot in the last 24/28 hours. Do you think this qualifies for protection on this article also? Thanks RM-Taylor (talk) 13:26, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi RM-Taylor. I’ve protected for a few days. Looks like an 'owning' fad has made its way to the Premier League. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 15:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Another IP sock
Hello, here's yet another VPN IP sock of Ezidishingali pushing the same fringe theory by removing mentions of Kurmanji and replacing it with "Ezdiki", this along with other removals of some content mentioning Kurds or Kurdistan on the pages Melek Taus, Yazidism, and Sheikh Adi. See 51.36.170.163. KurdeEzidi (talk) 10:58, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, another VPN. And blocked. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 11:03, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- @KurdeEzidi: Please check edits by 117.104.129.34, another VPN. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 07:43, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the notification, he cited a science fiction that takes place 500 years in the future, I have now reverted his edits. KurdeEzidi (talk) 13:00, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Erbil International Airport needs protection as the sock continues to disrupt. Semsûrî (talk) 17:11, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Semsûrî. Done Can you done any reverts that’s needed? Malcolmxl5 (talk) 17:19, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- OK, I think I got it. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 17:22, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Template:Lang-kmr Now this one. This one has been disrupted for years now, and permanent protection should really be considered. Semsûrî (talk) 00:08, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- I see I protected this one for three months. Let's see how that goes. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 13:46, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

- @KurdeEzidi and Semsûrî: Please check an edit by IP 77.82.167.38 to Persecution of Yazidis. Another VPN. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 13:43, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- Two more VPN socks at Ethnic group who keep adding an image of Yazidis to the article despite the claim of Yazidis being an own ethnicity separate from Kurds being highly disputed. See 171.228.186.125 and 42.117.188.30, the page needs semi-protection. KurdeEzidi (talk) 17:18, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
IP user continues
Heya, you were the latest person to block IP user 181.164.26.213, so figured I'd bring it to your attn. Although most of their edits aren't huge edits, their behavior hasn't changed since the last block, continuing to make disruptive edits.
Some particular points...They've been blocked twice already; 92 out of their 357 edits have been reverted since January, which isn't a sizeable number, but still worth noting; they've never entered in an edit description for any of those 357 edits, which isn't a requirement by any means, but it raises an eyebrow; although I didn't check every single edit, I am confident that the user has never used a reference tag before, or made an attempt to reference something, I've checked most of the edits which had higher character counts hoping to see one, but I saw nothing; every time someone edits their talk page, they immediately blank it, making it seem like nothing happened, which again isn't against the rules but is still odd behavior; they haven't replied to any of the aforementioned discussions on their talk page, including the one where I tried to steer them in the right direction; and no attempt at registering a username.
Making edits on the whim with no sources + no effort in following the guidelines + ignoring other users, is unfortunately, the type of user that backpedals the progress here on Wikipedia. Sorry for the slightly long rant, I don't know what else would make them at least acknowledge or change something. Anything. Xanarki (talk) 22:37, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Xanarki, I’ve blocked for a month. They really need to start explaining their edits. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 07:05, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
Latest user:Canadiansteve sock on Zellers
Robert Manuel Moniz (talk · contribs · count) Meters (talk) 07:24, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Meters, now blocked. Copying in @Jules*: another Zellers faux-nez who is also editing fr.wiki for your attention. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 07:47, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- Ha. I was an English Quebecer many years ago. My French is still pretty good, but no longer colloquial enough (or recent enough?) to have been familiar with "faux-nez" in the internet context. I'm sure many French editors find "sock puppets" to be as amusing as I do "faux-nez". Meters (talk) 03:10, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
- It’s a marvellous phrase, isn’t it. I shall use it more often. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 17:39, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

Malcolm, like Kris Degoia, he appears the user is the owner of the Zellers brand that HBC is suing per WP:PAID. Please set up the Wikipedia:Long-term abuse on this user and inform User:WMFOffice to lock Stevecanadian not only on Wikipedia but the entire Wikimedia sites.
—76.68.77.79 (talk) 16:49, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
- Phew! I thought you were going to say another faux-nez had appeared. As it happens, Stevecanadian has been globally locked. Otherwise, I don’t think there has been any activity on-wiki this month? I'm aware of the off-wiki legal dispute but who is Kris Degoia? -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 17:37, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

I would say that WP:NOTHERE applies: [2], [3]. This is the same user which you dealt with here: [4], their other IPs have also since been blocked. [5], [6]. Thank you if you can do anything about this, this user has been disruptive at multiple places. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 22:10, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Vandalism
There's nothing to discuss for reverting vandalism. You protected it so he continues the vandalism with his accounts and you are essentially preventing the reverting of the vandalism. I ask you either increase protection or revert the vandalism yourself now please. 64.79.242.185 (talk) 04:33, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
- Perhaps you would raise your issues with the content on the article talk page. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 10:47, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
- There is no issue "with content" of any article. It's a vandalism issue of someone, that's not the only article vandalised. You only protected one so he can keep his vandalism unreverted, and you are refusing to fix your mistake. Even if you fully protect all affected articles, he will find some other movie articles to add his name. It's not about a content of one article. 64.79.242.25 (talk) 17:46, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

AFD closing/deletion
Hi, when you deleted United States Academic Decathlon topics, you also removed links to it. One was in United States Academic Decathlon, in a pseudo-hatnote that became: For a more detailed list, see United States Academic Decathlon topics. The whole "pseudo-hanote" needed to be removed. There was also an actual hatnote to the deleted article that was missed, presumably because it was not in the source as a [[ ]] type link, that I also removed per WP:REDHAT. I'm wonder if you used any tool to do the link removal. MB 17:13, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, XFDcloser. Thanks for picking up the hatnotes. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 12:19, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

Mohammad Rizwan page vandalism
Hello, Thank you for protecting Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistani cricketer)’s page from vandalism. I would like to suggest you to protect the page from vandalism until the end of Asia Cup which is at least till 13 September 2022 to avoid further vandalism. The upcoming Pakistan vs India match would be September 11th 2022 which would cause more vandalism. Thank you as always! 2601:2C7:4480:E410:D834:F8D6:8310:79A2 (talk) 05:10, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

- I will elevate this if i freaking have to. You dont get to make a subjective moral and hypothetical call on a policy issue, than prevent any attempts to have an actual NPOV editor review it. And for the record, a simple pending changes protection would be able to prevent all harrasment based vandalism. 104.177.94.141 (talk) 23:06, 5 September 2022 (UTC)

- It isnt harrasment to report on an obviously notable figure. In fact, I would argue that having a nuetral article from wikipedia appearing above the "real life villains wiki" would be less harmful for christine. In addition, the policy you cite explicitly states that "Content and sourcing that comply with the biographies of living persons policy do not violate this policy". 168.8.125.20 (talk) 14:16, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

- You seem to be completely missing the point here. The mere existence of the article would continue the harassment. You could have it sourced to hell and back and the article would still be considered harassment. This is a person whose only actual claim to fame is 15 years of relentless online harassment. Talkpage Beatrice de Graaf
Hi Malcolm, I just want to give a follow up on the events on the talk page of Beatrice de Graaf. I tried to settle the discussion with reasoning, but the latest comment of Leontrooper was without reasoning. He even made a vandalistic post on the page. I made this action partly undone and I will reinstate the version of yesterday, without the plagiarism thing. I have done this because I think this user is beyond reasoning. He even placed a personal attack on me on the Dutch Wiki. I hope I've updated you enough on this matter, and If you think some things on the page still could be improved I'm willingly to help. Administrators' newsletter – October 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. If you wish to help out at AFC, enable AFCH by navigating to Preferences → Gadgets and checking the "Yet Another AfC Helper Script" box.
- Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.
- A modification to the deletion RfC remedy in the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been made to reaffirm the independence of the RfC and allow the moderators to split the RfC in two.
- The second phase of the 2021-22 Discretionary Sanctions Review closes 3 October.
- An administrator's account was recently compromised. Administrators are encouraged to check that their passwords are secure, and reminded that ArbCom reserves the right to not restore adminship in cases of poor account security. You can also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra level of security.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections open 2 October and close 8 October.
- You are invited to comment on candidates in the 2022 CUOS appointments process.
- An RfC is open to discuss whether to make Vector 2022 the default skin on desktop.
- Tech tip: You can do a fuzzy search of all deleted page titles at Special:Undelete.

Anon block without explanation
Hello. Can you explain this block of 99.76.17.163 (talk · contribs · logs)? How is it okay to block someone, with no message on their (still virgin) UTP? Does not blocking require notifying the blocked user? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 10:13, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Jevin Hodge
I don't know if deleted pages are totally thrown away, or if an admin can access them. In March 2018, the Jevin Hodge article was correctly deleted by you after this discussion: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jevin Hodge. Now that he is poised to be elected to the 118th Congress, his draft article at Draft:Jevin Hodge looks rather bare. I was wondering if the old deleted article could be placed on the draft's talk page to be mined for relevant material? If possible, it would make the library research and editing go faster. --Bejnar (talk) 22:37, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
- I guess it won't be necessary after all. "Rep. David Schweikert defeats Jevin Hodge in 1st District." --Bejnar (talk) 21:46, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
Persistent unhelpful editing
Hi @malcolmxl5, and many thanks for all your help with this. I'll let you know if and when they re-appear (usually it's in the afternoon for a few minutes). I've been looking at some of the articles they edited on the list you provided and doing some tidying up (and boy did some of them need tidying up). One of their edits was very recognisable: an article referred to No. 73, which they changed to No. #73. I have told them that No. and # mean the same, but they do seem to like having both - it's quite endearing, in a way, that one!Neilinabbey (talk) 16:58, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi. Sorry to bother you again but I imagine you've got your work cut out investigating this issue so I thought it might be helpful to give you a few pages that I think particularly illustrate the user's behaviour. They are all pages where they have made multiple edits, often repeat edits after previous ones have been reverted; they also show that other editors have also been reverting this user's edits, not just me. They also show typical edits, such as putting things into italics for no clear reason and a particular favourite, a curious linguistic edit in which 'a' is changed to 'one', as in 'set in a cemetery' becomes 'set in one cemetery', and 'XXX was a concept car' becomes 'XXX was one concept car'.
In all of these pages, they have used multiple IP addresses but they all, or mostly all, start with 8 so should be easily identifiable.
The pages are: Nunnery Wood High School Sark Football Team National Indoor BMX Arena Maurice Peddelty Sin-Jin Smyth
Anyway, I'll leave you in peace as I'm sure you're very busy with this and other issues, but I thought this might help a little. Regards,Neilinabbey (talk) 14:44, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Neilinabbey. Hi. Thanks for that. I’m at a couple of games at the 2021 Women's Rugby League World Cup so I’ll pick it up later. Cheers, Malcolmxl5 (talk) 16:21, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Malcolmxl5, excellent, enjoy the matches! I've been enjoying the rugby union version, but sadly only on TV!Neilinabbey (talk) 16:29, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi Malcolmxl5. I hope you're enjoying the rugby - I watched the wheelchair match last night, great stuff. Just an update for you: they are still busy adding u helpful edits, currently as 86.4.170.56. They've not responded on Talk to any comments. I'd bring one particular page to your attention, Rumbelows. They edited this yesterday. It looks like they've been editing this page on and off for years, since at least 2016. The page was an absolute mess (not all their fault, I hasten to add), full of very poor-quality and unidiomatic English and syntax, grammatical issues, irrelevant or superfluous detail, references that did not support what they were supposed to be supporting, subjective and unencyclopaedic language... I have tried to tidy it up but didn't have time to do this fully. Also, they edited another of their favourite pages, that for the Dean of Blackburn. They added in spaces between words and citations, but only for some of the citations, not all, leaving the page inconsistent. Not a very big issue, but indicative of a rather erratic style and utterly pointless. I've not seen them today, but I expect I soon will. Regards,Neilinabbey (talk) 15:16, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi - just a quick update. They are currently using 92.28.150.80. I've been on holiday for the last week and not online every day, but I did notice that in my absence at least two other editors had reverted all or nearly all of their daily edits on a couple of days, which if nothing else shows it's not just me!Neilinabbey (talk) 16:15, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
