Question from Coolstuff0514 (07:10, 3 November 2024)
how do i create a wiki --Coolstuff0514 (talk) 07:10, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Coolstuff0514: Welcome to wikipedia. Did you want to create a wiki page? If so, you should check out Help:YFA. Creating a whole wiki is a much more complicated process. Come back here to reply if this was what you really meant. Happy editing! -MPGuy2824 (talk) 07:20, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
Weird taxobox
Thanks for your help fixing the taxobox here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakaduacris
Could you help us fix this taxon box too? Not sure what we are doing wrong! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stropis
Would love to know what I'm doing wrong here.
Thanks!
--Petasida (talk) 06:50, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- The taxon in the article itself needed to be set to the genus name only: [1]
- A taxon template needed to be created, by clicking the "fix" link: Template:Taxonomy/Stropis
- That's all. Thanks for creating these genus articles. Happy editing! -MPGuy2824 (talk) 06:57, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

Updates for editors
- Stewards can now make global account blocks cause global autoblocks. This will assist stewards in preventing abuse from users who have been globally blocked. This includes preventing globally blocked temporary accounts from exiting their session or switching browsers to make subsequent edits for 24 hours. Previously, temporary accounts could exit their current session or switch browsers to continue editing. This is an anti-abuse tool improvement for the Temporary Accounts project. You can read more about the progress on key features for temporary accounts. [2]
- Wikis that have the CampaignEvents extension enabled can now use the Collaboration List feature. This list provides a new, easy way for contributors to learn about WikiProjects on their wikis. Thanks to the Campaign team for this work that is part of the 2024/25 annual plan. If you are interested in bringing the CampaignEvents extension to your wiki, you can follow these steps or you can reach out to User:Udehb-WMF for help.
- The text color for red links will be slightly changed later this week to improve their contrast in light mode. [3]
- View all 32 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, on multilingual wikis, users can now hide translations from the WhatLinksHere special page.
Updates for technical contributors
- XML data dumps have been temporarily paused whilst a bug is investigated. [4]
In depth
- Temporary Accounts have been deployed to six wikis; thanks to the Trust and Safety Product team for this work, you can read about the deployment plans. Beginning next week, Temporary Accounts will also be enabled on seven other projects. If you are active on these wikis and need help migrating your tools, please reach out to User:Udehb-WMF for assistance.
- The latest quarterly Language and Internationalization newsletter is available. It includes: New languages supported in translatewiki or in MediaWiki; New keyboard input methods for some languages; details about recent and upcoming meetings, and more.
Meetings and events
- MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference Fall 2024 is happening in Vienna, Austria and online from 4 to 6 November 2024. The conference will feature discussions around the usage of MediaWiki software by and within companies in different industries and will inspire and onboard new users.

Question from Wilsonbec2024 (06:09, 6 November 2024)
Hi, I have delayed putting up an identity page for review for a long time. Is there a good way to go about it? I am an author and public figure and have drafted one --Wilsonbec2024 (talk) 06:10, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Wilsonbec2024: Welcome to Wikipedia. I recommend that you read Wikipedia:Autobiography slowly and carefully before proceeding further. Happy editing! -MPGuy2824 (talk) 08:10, 6 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Николай зайцев (09:29, 6 November 2024)
This guy: Arsen Pavlov? He seems to have been born in 1983. But so what? Why are you telling me this? Also, stop vandalising Pietro Giachino. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 09:51, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
GEICO 500
Did you check the templates when converting GEICO 500 in a disambiguation page? The Banner talk 11:59, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- There are two currently running GEICO 500s. It isn't obvious which one to link to. I've restored the redirect. Hopefully folks switch links to the target soon, after which someone can convert this into a disambig page. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 12:16, 7 November 2024 (UTC)

- Hey, you've been blocked and a kind admin has removed the mobile number from this section. I suggest that you read all the links in your block message over the next couple of days, then craft an unblock request along with the suggestion for a new username that does not violate Wikipedia's Username policy. Take your time on this. Doing it hastily isn't going to help you. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 07:43, 9 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Rayinde11 (10:03, 27 October 2024)
I recently moved my draft about Muhammad Kamalud-Deen Al-Adaby to the main article space. However, when i search for it on my browser it's display there was a problem displaying this page --Rayinde11 (talk) 10:03, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Rayinde11: Where are you searching for it? On Wikipedia? I can see it in these results. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 10:05, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response! I've confirmed that the article exists on Wikipedia, but when I searched for it in my web browser, it doesn't show up yet. Rayinde11 (talk) 10:33, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, got it. That requires indexing by search engines, which is only done after the article is patrolled. New pages patrol has a backlog of over 10,000 articles right now, but a reviewer will get to it eventually. Meanwhile you can improve on the article OR work on other things within Wikipedia (e.g. Wikipedia:Task Center). Happy editing! -MPGuy2824 (talk) 11:22, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification! I'll keep making improvements to the article while I wait for it to be patrolled. I'll also look into other tasks on Wikipedia in the meantime. Appreciate the advice. Rayinde11 (talk) 15:29, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi MPGuy2824! Thanks for the advice. I noticed that the article still isn’t appearing in search engine results, even though it shows up within Wikipedia’s search. Rayinde11 (talk) 05:41, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- Rayinde11, it will take some time. It's hard to find reviewers who know the subject. Meanwhile, our backlog has increased to 11,000 articles. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 07:57, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- okay what do you suggest i do Rayinde11 (talk) 09:56, 11 November 2024 (UTC)

Leader of the Opposition (Japan)
Hi,
I've declined your G4 speedy request on Leader of the Opposition (Japan), and just wanted to pop by to explain why.
I looked at the old article which was deleted following Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Leader of the Opposition (Japan), and this version has much more main body content and sources, so it's not merely a case of recreation of the deleted version. I think it potentially also makes a better case for notability. Also, at least one of the articles on the past holders of this post use the term LOTO, so it's possible it's an actual thing. I say only 'possible', because the comments in that AfD seemed to suggest this could be just a generic term and not an actual position. Anyway, that AfD had minimal participation (only one !vote), so I didn't think that necessarily represented community consensus; in other words, I'm treating that outcome as a 'soft delete' rather than a binding precedent.
Hope that's okay. Give me a shout if you disagree violently. :)
Best, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 14:44, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- No worries. You are able to compare the current article with the deleted version and so can take a more informed decision. Congrats on the mop, btw.
disagree violently
Ha!- Happy editing and admining. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 05:33, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
Taxonomy template references
Please add a reference when creating taxonomy templates. I have added one here, for example. Thanks. YorkshireExpat (talk) 07:01, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, I assume that most taxons will be available on CoL (except maybe a very newly defined one). If it isn't available there then what other places do you look for such a ref? -MPGuy2824 (talk) 07:07, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Some people have strong feelings about what to use. Most things in the taxonbar are ok I feel. A dodgy reference is better than none. YorkshireExpat (talk) 15:47, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
Question from Winterkönig Hannover (07:26, 11 November 2024)
Where can I find my status of my current user group? --Winterkönig Hannover (talk) 07:26, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Winterkönig Hannover: When I go to my/any user page, there is a link on the left, within a group of links under the heading "Tools". It is called "View user groups". For you it would take you to Special:UserRights/Winterkönig_Hannover where it shows that you are a member of the autoconfirmed group, and no other. Hope this helps! -MPGuy2824 (talk) 07:34, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your answer. Winterkönig Hannover (talk) 08:20, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
