Fair use rationale for File:Frontiers of science comic strip.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Frontiers of science comic strip.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude(talk 07:21, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost

[edit]

Hi Lumos3, I have noticed that you are sometimes updating Wikipedia:Press coverage. As you know, in the Signpost we are similarly trying to keep readers informed about media coverage of Wikipedia/Wikimedia, in the "In the news" section. The section has usually more than a 1000 readers [1] and islinked in the Foundation's monthly reports, but unfortunately we currently are short on good writers for it, and had to drop it in the current issue for first time since May.

Would you like to contribute every now and then? Even if you are not inclined to write a full story, a short summary (even if it is just one sentence) of a news story can be very useful - compare your summaries for the Swiss award for Jimbo, or the International Baccalaureate story, with the Signpost's likewise brief coverage of these two news items.

Work on the section is coordinated in the Signpost newsroom, where there are already some suggestions listed for the upcoming edition (Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2010-10-25/In the news, to be published on Monday).

Regards, HaeB (talk) 12:36, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HaeB, thank you for your invitation. Its true I have a long standing interest in the way Wikipedia is developing and being received by the world at large. I used to post news reports in the Signpost about 3 or 4 years ago but the process seemed to grow defunct and I found my posts were being ignored so I stopped. I would be happy to post any news items I find in the page you specify above, and equally happy for any editorial changes you or the Signpost team want to make to them for publication. best wishes Lumos3 (talk) 14:28, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! As you have seen, I added more myself, but your write-ups were very helpful. Work on the new issue has started, I listed some news items to cover here, your contribution would be welcome.

Sign post

[edit]

I just wanted to call your attention to the November 25, 2010 issue of the satiric newspaper, The Onion which features afront page story on Wikipedia.

Thanks , I think this is covered in the Briefly section of today's Sign post. Lumos3 (talk) 11:53, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Lumos!

[edit]

I greatly appreciate the opportunity afforded by Wikipedia to freely edit within the project. My focus is on cleaning things up to professional standards, a condition befitting such an ambitious undertaking as this. Typos are my absolute pet peeve; they keep me up at night and so I try and eliminate them as soon as I see them. It gives me an excellent excuse to wile away countless hours on Wiki and I usually end up learning a great deal in the process.

In answer to your invitation, I do have one question for you. I'm particularly fascinated with early medieval history and everything connected to it. I was wondering if there is something more I could be doing with my contributions in this area. Is there some sort of history portal club or the like that I could get involved with?

I look forward to contributing more and better in the future.

Thanks for reaching out, Lumos.

TheConduqtor (talk) 05:28, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Conduqtor , Nice to see an enthusiastic new recruit. Wikipedians interested in a particular topic or specialism organise themselves in "projects" where work is identified and tasks taken up. There is very little central control. Task ideas/requests are posted up and hopefully someone will step up and take them on. I suggest you take a look atWikipedia:WikiProject Middle Ages. It has discussion areas and you simply have to add your user id to its list of participants to join. You should be able to link up with others doing similar work to you there. Remember the Wikipedia motto be bold , since mistaken changes can be easily rolled back , if you upset someone just say sorry and think again.
If you find anything puzzles you I'm happy to answer further questions. Lumos3 (talk) 11:09, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

All your edits are constructive and benefit Wikipedia. Becoming a member implies no obligation to edit regularly or at all. It just gives you an identity which allows you to look back at what you have done and perhaps get some satisfaction. You don't have to reveal anything of yourself apart from an email address. Many Wikipedia editors only fix grammar / spellings and this is a useful function respected by the community. See WP:GNOME. ⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Naomi Mitchison.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currentlyorphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Wikipedia aims to achieve neutrality on all subject and represent all points of view in proportion to their level of acceptance. If Ophiuchus is a hoax perhaps you'd like to explain how this came about , who perpetrated it and why etc on the page in question , giving reliable sources to back up what you write.Lumos3(talk) 10:32, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Members' input needed at WikiProject Women's History

[edit]

Hello. I'm writing to you as your name is listed on the members pagefor WikiProject Women's History. In recent discussions at the project, most notably here, several members have indicated that the scope of the project may need to be more clearly defined and communicated. I have set up a workshop page for this, but it obviously needs as wide a participation as possible to achieve genuine consensus and to allow the project to move forward. You'll find the workshop here.

If you no longer consider yourself an active member of the project, it would help if you could indicate this on the members' page. This will allow us to better gauge how much people-power we actually have. Best wishes,Voceditenore (talk) 04:34, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Lumos3. I reverted most of your changes to the plot summary for Another Year because to me they seemed to fall foul ofWP:FILMPLOT which suggests the length of a synopsis should be between 400-700 words and that there should be no "analytic, synthetic, interpretive, explanatory, or evaluative claims." I also thought some of the detail you added, while accurate, would only make it more difficult for a reader who had not seem the film to understand the plot. WP:PLOTSUMemphasises that summaries should be concise, stating "a plot summary is not a recap". I know you'll be annoyed, but I'd be happy to discuss things on the article's talk page if you want. Exok (talk) 11:55, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

At just over 500 words the length of the summary as I left it was not excessive. The problem is that the film has no "plot" as such just a series of vignettes about the life of a family. If the only bare plot is given then the reader will essentially have no idea what the film is about. Every scene is significant in that it help to paint the wider picture. I will take out some of the detail where I may have gone too far and feel free to amend the result in the article.Lumos3 (talk) 09:42, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How do I contact a User?

[edit]

Dear Lumos3,

I would like to contact a User named DragonflySixtyseven who has deleted a draft article I was writing. It was deleted on the grounds of being 'overly promotional' and I want to find out how I can make the article Wiki compliant. I have written to DragonflySixtyseven using this format of Discussion but not heard anything back. Am I doing things in the right way? I am new to this and beginning to trying to find my way around.

Thanks in advance.

KidLotus (talk) 17:51, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear KidLotus, Go to DragonflySixtyseven's User page here User:DragonflySixtyseven. You will see that they welcome email but say they will respond on your talk page. To email a user look in the left hand column while in their user or user talk page . You will see there a link called ' email this user'. Click here and write the message in the form which appears. This will send a message to the email account they used to register with Wikipedia.
To make an article more Wikipedia compliant material needs to cite independent sources separate from its subject. The best would be ones in academic journals , books which are not self published ( ie. published by an publisher who exercises some editorial control) , and also newspaper articles for current events . See WP:RS for more on this subject. Hope this helps. Don't get discouraged it takes a while to learn the rules and norms of Wikipedia. Best wishes Lumos3(talk) 09:08, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Muktananda

[edit]

thank you Lumos3.

I was not intending to engage anyone on this old business. I was just browsing and when I saw Wiki's article with its paltry mention of Muktananda's behavior issues and criminal activity by his subordinates, I suddenly had to say something. I don't know how to verify anything, but I know I was a direct witness and participant. In history, a direct source is considered a valid source. Alot of what I said is factually true. Some of it was what I believe to be true.

I suppose what really bothers me is that the Wiki article misses the meaning of the Muktananda phenomenon, which I suppose is similar to other cultish goings-on. If he were presenting himself as a teacher, many things could be excused. He was in fact presenting himself as far more than that. The followers were for whatever reason, caused to make terrible decisions. Many lives were negatively impacted. Shades of Jonestown! — Precedingunsigned comment added by Palasko53 (talkcontribs) 13:12, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has no way of knowing who's personal testimony is true and who's isn't. We have to relay on published works where the author ,editor or publisher takes responsibility for the truth and is willing to defend it in law. Where a work has been published in this way , not self published, then there is strong grounds for including its views in the article. One day I hope someone will write such a book about SY. I have found the experiences people have in SY are not so special, they happen in all spiritual paths where there is an earnest desire to gain self knowledge. In western culture there is no framework to place a truly spritual experience. When people have one they are easily persuaded they have been "given it" by whatever individual or organisation was around at the time. Lumos3 (talk) 10:43, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

AfD and PROD notifications

[edit]

Hi Lumos3,

Back in December, you got either an AfD or PROD notification, which was part of the template testing project's experiments. If you could go here and leave us some feedback about what you think about the new versions of the templates we tested (there are links to the templates), that would be very useful. (You can also email me at mpinchuk@wikimedia.org if you want.) Thanks! Maryana (WMF)(talk) 23:44, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Correction I made to Big George Webley page

[edit]

Hiya

I've just had message about a correction I had made saying it was incorrect. I know my information is right and can be verified by Gary/"Big George" Webley's brother if need be - will I have to get something from him to prove it?

Kind regards

Karen
I have the same problem where a relative is notable enough to have a wikipedia page. Even though I know a lot of things which are true I cannot enter them in the article because of the Wikipedia Reliable sources rules. Personal knowledge of a subject or person is not sufficient because we have no way of checking you are who you say you are. So Wikipedia relies on sources that have already been published elsewhere. If the brother has written and published a biography or newspaper article then they are sources you can use . Word of mouth is not sufficiently reliable to be used as a source. This is especially important for living people where the law of libel may come into play if we publish inaccuracies. Hope this helps. Lumos3 (talk) 11:21, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
