music award winners subcategories

Lquilter, from your edit on Pipedreams, I gather that you don't want Category:Music award winners to contain any individual Music award winners directly. Would it be OK if I create a subcat "ASCAP Awards winners" (as described at ASCAP#Awards) and categorize Pipedreams there? • Hi Patrug -- Thanks for writing.

It's just sort of the standard for these award winner categories for them to not include articles about individuals who have won awards. Some of the award winner categories have hatnotes indicating that, and that's helpful.

As to whether or not to create a subcategory for any particular award (such as the ASCAP Awards), personally I would create lists of award-winners, rather than categories. I've done a lot of categories and a lot of lists, and categories have much more limited functionality and a lot of problems in keeping them accurate. If someone else adds something in to a category (or takes it out), there is literally no way to know that other than to visually compare lists of articles in the category. You also can't order them in any useful way -- by year, type of award, etc. -- or re-order them. So lists (with tables if ordering by different sort keys is useful) are infinitely preferable for things like awards, which have many winners, who have each won multiple awards.

Thanks for the quick reply, Lquilter. An explanatory hatnote would indeed be helpful, but I see your point. I recently did substantial work myself on List of flautists, to provide an alternative for a hopelessly cumbersome category tree. For now, I'll create Category:ASCAP Award winners just so Pipedreams won't be dropped from Category:Music award winners entirely. Orphan work?

• Actually, the original text included the false (and unsourced) claim that the court found that the work was in the public domain. As much as I would have liked that holding, it is sadly not true. Unfortunately, I've seen a few headlines misreporting the decision as a finding that HBTY is in the public domain, which is definitely confusing. But the text of the articles that I've seen has actually not propounded the confusion. Anyway, I removed that text, and I'm happy to see that it hasn't been put back. Secondly, I added the text about it being an orphan work. That's just an explanation for the reader, based on the basic definition of an orphan work, which is one whose copyright status or owner is indeterminate. As a basic definition, it's both useful to the reader, and not really the sort of thing that needs to be independently cited, IMO. But I'll keep an eye out for sourcing, since it won't hurt, and I expect it'll be coming along shortly.

@Green Cardamom: -- For instance, the Wall Street Journal headline and the caption in the image says "Federal Judge Rules 'Happy Birthday' Song in Public Domain", but if you read the article, you will see that in fact nowhere in the text of the article does the author of the article actually say that -- as indeed, they really couldn't, because the judge didn't make that holding. WSJ Headlines are very often not written by the author, and are not themselves reliable sources. Here's another article, in The Hollywood Reporter, which is also very careful to not say the song is "in the public domain": http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/happy-birthday-copyright-ruled-be-826528 . Eriq Gardner is an excellent reporter on copyright matters, and this is a mainstream "reliable" source. The NYT, http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/23/business/media/happy-birthday-copyright-invalidated-by-judge.html, discusses the decision; again, you can see that they do not say that the decision holds the work to be in the public domain; rather, that the plaintiffs' lawyers are quoted as saying that the work would be in the public domain, de facto: "If the judge’s ruling stands, “Happy Birthday to You” would become part of the public domain. “Since no one else has ever claimed to own the copyright, we believe that as a practical matter, this means the song is public property,” said Mark C. Rifkin, a lawyer for the plaintiffs." --Lquilter (talk)

• • This, unfortunately have to go directly to the actual ruling document itself. The court ruled that Warner does not hold a valid copyright. The court did not rule on who actually own the copyright (or if it is even copyrighted, due to it being common knowledge or copyright expiry), unfortunately. On the other hand, the headlines infer the public domain status as being published multiple times pre-1923. As for the removed text, this is not the case of orphaned work but rather it is not even copyrightable due to it being common knowledge (just like a folk song might not be copyrightable)SYSS Mouse (talk) 02:54, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

SYSS Mouse, headlines are not reliable sources; in newspapers, they are not typically written by the author of the article, but by copy-editors, and they can sometimes misstate the contents of the article themselves. If I recall correctly, there was quite a bit of discussion about this 8 or 10 years ago during one of the major drafting of the WP:RS guidelines. ... Left unanswered is who owns the copyright, if it still has a copyright. I skimmed the ruling itself and it seemed they are not sure if Hill Sisters actually had the copyright of the lyrics in the first place, it seemed. And if they did, does it still apply? Indeed, it's an interesting question, because HBTY, like many copyright works, simply has no clear documentary history. It may literally be impossible to determine its "actual" copyright status. So courts can only resolve claims by claimants, on the basis of the evidence they have. Nobody has thus far raised a claim other than Warner, whose claims are now invalidated (at least at this stage of the game). But with a lot of money at stake, we may see other claimants come out of the woodwork. I'm hopeful not. --Lquilter (talk) 03:20, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

There is no "1923 clause". Works published prior to 1923, with the authorization of the rightsholder, have passed into the public domain. But part of the argument in this case is that earlier publications were not done with authorization of the rightsholder. It may be completely impossible to prove authorization or lack thereof for something almost a hundred years ago -- but the burden falls on the claimant to prove they have the copyright. If Warner couldn't come up with evidence, it seems to me unlikely that anyone else will be able to -- but that's not a positive assertion of "public domain"; it's a failure to prove copyright. Feminist SF Page

Hello Lquilter!

My name is Daisy and I am currently enrolled in a Feminist SF Course at the University of Oregon in which we have been assigned a wikipedia project. Myself and three other students from the class are working to revamp this page and hopefully add some great new contributions. Do you have any advice for us on what we could do to make this page even better? It would mean a lot to us little feminists! • Hi Daisy -- You can't use an author's individual / personal website to establish notability. But you can use it as a citation for basic facts. It's always better to try to find a media site if you can. Locus is a great cite for awards. You can use databases -- like the SF Awards+ Database at http://www.sfadb.com/ -- to cite to basic facts. .... As for linking to the author's personal page, generally, it's mostly frowned on to link to these kinds of resources in references. They're not permanent, for one thing, and not considered "reliable sources", for another. So they'll do in a pinch but better to get media sites. IF your aim is to make sure that the author's website is linked, check on the Wikipedia entry for that person -- you can put the link in "external links", and/or in the infobox in the "personal website" section. --Lquilter (talk) 17:13, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

If you look on the page, while you're logged in, you should see "edit" links at each section. If you click on one of those, you can edit the text. If you want to MOVE some text from one section to the other, you can just click on "edit" on the whole page (or a section that includes both of those subsections). Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Lquilter. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
• A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Lquilter.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. • Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
• Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.

Technical news

• When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
• Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
• The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

• The Arbitration Committee released a response to the Wikimedia Foundation's statement on paid editing and outing.

Obituaries

• JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

Attention: WikiProject African diaspora participants

Hello fellow project participants. Not sure how many users are still active as normal Wikipedia editors but felt the need to attempt to get a gauge on who can be called on for help with articles falling under the umbrella of the African diaspora project. According to the project's article table there are over six thousand articles related to the African diaspora; there's not a hundred at FA/GA grade and there's over twelve hundred that are unassessed. With Wikipedia being one of the major information reference points in the world today we should consider this unacceptable. Much work needs to be done on the rating of the importance of articles as well. With more communication amongst participants and a dedication to addressing the articles on the to-do list I believe we can make this WikiProject one of the most well organized and thorough on the site. If you are interested in collaborative work with some of your fellow project members, have certain expertise on any particular subjects, ideals on/about the WikiProject, etc. simply drop your name under the "Project revision" section I've created on the project's talk page and state your intentions and main points of interest in our WikiProject and we can attempt to move forward from there. Lack of space

I have often been puzzled by the seemingly inexplicably high frequency of a certain typographical error in Wikipedia articles, in which people write things like

pp.56–71,

without including a space like that normally found between two adjacent words, thus:

pp. 56–71

But in doing this edit, I see the extreme consistency with which that pattern occurred in the article, and it causes me again to wonder about another conceivable explanation that has sometimes crossed my mind: Might it be that some people consider that to be standard usage? The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Organized labour project

Thank you for earlier joining the Organized Labour project. I've been a participant in the project since 2006 and am helping with a revival of it. As part this we are introducing a new membership system, which will help with communications among participants. This involves creating a membership file for each participant within your user space (you can see an example of my membership card here: User:Goldsztajn/WikiProjectCards/WikiProject Organized Labour). This system is already in operation within a number of wikiprojects (such as Women in Red and Medicine). You will not have to do anything, myself or someone else from the project will create the relevant file within your userspace. However, I am conscious that it is not polite to change an editor's userspace without notice. Hi Lquilter - Thanks for the help. I've made some slight edits to your card to incorporate when you first joined the project and also used the default image. You can put any commons image you want there, it's meant to be a personalised space, although feel free to revert to my anti-child labour activist! the membership system automatically detects users who have these cards and lists them in the project which will appear here: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Organized_Labour/Members (yours is already there). There's also a needshelp parameter, which if left blank, autofills with "nothing". Again feel free to change as you like. Finally, there are two parameters for notifications, which in my case are on ("1"), whereas I have set these to off ("0") for you, which means you won't be notified if a new member joins or if a new post appears on the project talk page. Queering Wikipedia 2021 User Group Working Days: May 14–16

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
