Notability of Alexander Oliver
A tag has been placed on Alexander Oliver requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.
If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 01:50, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Editing
With regard to the children of the above. The way to name them is within a sentence not as a list. Also the source you gave at familysearch only led to a search page and not to any information about him. The article needs sources to assert his notability first and foremost, otherwise a "Prod" tag will probably end up being added.♦Tangerines♦·Talk 02:14, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
The familysearch link you have now added again only leads to a blank search page and nothing else. Sources should also be added "inline" within the article and not added in the references section. Please have a look at these articles, WP:HOW, WP:CITE, WP:VER and WP:RS. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 02:19, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry but I have again reverted another of your edits. The tags on the article are still valid and should only be removed once the issues are dealt with, no matter whether there is also the underconstruction tag also on the article.♦Tangerines♦·Talk 03:02, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Adding signatures to articles
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I've noticed that you've been adding your signature to some of your article contributions. This is a simple mistake to make and is easy to correct. For future reference, the need to associate edits with users is taken care of by an article's edit history. Therefore, you should use your signature only when contributing to talk pages, the Village Pump, or other such discussion pages. For a better understanding of what distinguishes articles from these type of pages, please see What is an article?. Again, thanks for contributing, and enjoy your Wikipedia experience! Thank you. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 03:09, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Alexander Oliver
I have already explained above that familysearch does not work as a source, which in addition even if it did work is not a valid source. I have also explained that you should not keep removing the tags. I will though ask you once again to stop removing the tags. You are clearly editing out of good faith but wikipedia has very specific guidelines about editing and creating articles. I really would urge you to read up about how to edit articles.♦Tangerines♦·Talk 03:13, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, one or more of the external links you added to the page Thomas Oliver (1582 - 1658) do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a collection of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia.
- Your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove unwanted links and spam from Wikipedia. If you were trying to insert a good link, please accept my creator's apologies, but note that the external link you added or changed is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia.
- The external links I reverted were matching the following regex rule(s): rule: 'members\.aol\.com' (link(s): http://members.aol.com/tlnnash/thomasoliver.html) .
- Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! XLinkBot (talk) 03:19, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- Further to the above message, an aol members page is also not a valid third party reliable source. WP:CITE, WP:RS and WP:VER. In addition you keep removing "reflist" from the references section. It is there for good reason and should not be removed. The sources go inline within the article and then appear in the references section automatically. There is no huge rush to sort out these articles, I can't see any of them being deleted so as I have already suggested perhaps you would be best reading how to edit articles firstly and then edit them further. Wikipedia can be a strange old place, but once you get used to it it is easy to edit.♦Tangerines♦·Talk 03:24, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Thomas Oliver (1582 - 1658)
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Thomas Oliver (1582 - 1658), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}}
to the top of Thomas Oliver (1582 - 1658). Hut 8.5 20:25, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
I deleted your article, Samuel S. Lewis (Texas), because there was no assertion of notability. Just being a soldier in the Texas Revolution is not enough to justify a stand-alone article about someone. I've been reading books on the Siege of Bexar and have not seen his name mentioned, so I don't think that Samuel S. Lewis is likely to meet the notability criteria. While it is flattering to be thought of so highly as someone's "hero," you don't even know me at all, nor I you. I think what you've done to put my moniker under a "heros" banner is highly inappropriate. So, please remove my moniker from under "Wiki 'Heros'" on your "User" page, or I will. There will be no discussion of this concern. You have no choice. Thank-you in advance. P.S. I like your "Verse of the Day" idea. I'm not mad at you. I just needed to make sure you knew that I was serious about you or me removing my moniker from any commended list you have, especially if the list is posted on, Wikipedia! Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
"The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer." (Proverbs 15:28)
Dear Lordoliver,
My brother in Christ,
My many greetings and thanks to you for your such a deep regard for me tough I am but flesh and bones and my Spirit a captive of my Love and L-O-R-D. You are truly blessed brother, as you come in the most mighty name of our resurrected Lord Jesus, the Christ. You are precious to the Lord! Whatever you are doing, wherever you are and however you feel, you are precious to Him! How wonderful.!.
I am standing with you in prayer and will hopefully be able to maintain fellowship with you via email. I am busy and won't always be able to answer or have time to fellowship but I will try my best to make time if you do call, or write to me on my yahoo address. I'll also look forward to editing with you on Wikipedia. For more information about my activities on Wiki, please look at my UserPage.
However, O, precious brother, Psalm 144:3 and Psalm 8:4 came knocking at my heart and as if I were in Job's sandals, when I received your regards. "...what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!". Also, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? In truly speaking brother, I am not worthy of being someone's hero or ideal. There is no wrong in doing so or having a human hero or ideal, as you see it is all about Loving One Another, yet, Oh brother, it is so joyful, mysteriously quite, and eternally fulfilling when we see and receive the Joy of having nothing; being nothing, seeing nothing; but the living Christ alone in the Glory!
In Christ Alone,
Your little brother,HopeChrist (talk) 01:21, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Alamo defenders
Hi Lordoliver, I think we may have had a miscommunication on the meaning of "redlink". A "redlink" means that wikilinks have been added to a term that does not have an article. I don't feel that most of these men are notable enough to have articles on their own, hence I didn't think there should be redlinks on their names (that is an invitation to create a new article about them). I see that you've just created articles for some of the lesser-known Alamo defenders. There really is not enough information for each of them to have an article - very little is known about most of them that is not already in the List of Alamo defenders. Would you be willing to discuss who should/should not have an article and redirect some of these that you have recently created to point to List of Alamo defenders? Perhaps there is additional information that we could include in the list that would satisfy your concerns?Karanacs (talk) 13:29, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- Do you really think that we need to create articles for all of those people, though? There is very little information about them except that they fought and died at the Alamo. Would it be possible to add a column or two to the list to contain any other information you think needs to be stored about them? I really think the names of the people should, in most cases, redirect straight to the list. Karanacs (talk) 15:53, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- The only information in the article on Miles DeForrest Andross I see is about his family and a brief line on how he came to be in the Alamo. I don't really consider that notable information, although I wouldn't object to including a column in the list that has names of parents and perhaps another with the names of spouses. This information isn't available for all of the defenders, which is why I had not included it as potential columns in the beginning. I'm basically worried that these articles will never be more than stubs, and I don't think the vast majority of readers would search by these names. I think the readers would be served better by having a better list. Perhaps a notes column could be added that has a very brief bio? Karanacs (talk) 16:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- I do agree that anyone who is the namesake of a county deserves his own article. I was looking at the featured lists and think that this might be a good example to follow. We could add a brief bio in the row under the person's name. Do you want to give that format a try and see if it will work well for this? Karanacs (talk) 16:12, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Welcome to Milhist
Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WPMILHIST Announcements}} there.
- Most important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
- The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, writing contests, article logistics, and other tasks.
- We have a number of task forces that focus on specific topics, nations, periods, and conflicts.
- We've developed a style guide that covers article structure and content, template use, categorization, and many other issues of interest.
- If you're looking for something to work on, there are many articles that need attention, as well as a number of review alerts and copy-editing alerts.
- The project has a stress hotline available for your use.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the project coordinators, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! --ROGER DAVIES talk 21:33, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

DYK
Hi, I saw your DYK nomination, which referes to the article Uniforms of the Confederate Military. I can confirm "date, length and reference" if you could add a footnote to the book where this is written, inlc. the page(s). I can see the fact being stated in the article, but could you, please, add a direct footnote after that paragraph.
On a different note, as a non-specialist, it was quite currious to me to find that "The first of the Navy uniforms were made in Dark Blue, but with the Southern style of rank for the officers". Maybe you could somehow add this to your DYK proposal (keep it in reasonable length, though). Anyway, just a suggestion, feel free to ignore it.
Also, it would be good for more people to read throught the entire article, since if the DYK is accepted, the article would be directly linked to the main page, so you want it to be flowless.Dc76\talk 03:57, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks a lot for dropping a note on my talk page. I made a couple of comments on your entry at Template talk:Did you know: one was over the wording of the hook, which I see you've addressed. The other Dc76 has mentioned above: the rules of DYK say that the hook should be directly referenced in the article with an inline citation. This just means that the sentence "This meant that many soldiers wore them even on the hot days, causing many Confederate soldiers to suffer from heatstrokes on long marches" needs a reference. If you can find this within the books you're working from, that's great; if not this link shows a snippet of text from a book about the Antietam Campaign which would do the trick at a pinch. Regards, — BillC talk 00:53, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again. I noticed that quite a bit of the text in the article is very similar to this page. If so, I think I might have difficulty endorsing it for DYK. — BillC talk 19:43, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- BillC, I don't understand what is the problem with the webpage you found. Is the sourse "Historical Times (Illustrated) Encyclopedia of the Civil War" edited by Patricia L. Faust problematic (I am totally from outside the topic)? Or do you suspect that Lordoliver has worked out the text from this website rather than from the book. If so, there is a simple test: Lordoliver, could you please photo or scan the title page of the book and the page that says about the wool clothing. If you really can't scan, borrow for 1 minute a cellphone with a camara and send a picture attachment, or smth like that. Dc76\talk 21:17, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Lordoliver, I think what BillC whats from you is to further improve the article, to develop it. Look at the bright side: thousands of people will see your DYK and I bet there will be at least 1000 unique hits to the article within 2 days. Clearly, it is worth developing it more than what already can be found in a webpage abstract of the book. If I were in the US, I could get the book from the library and would help you myself, but unfortunately I can't get it here and now. I will try to help you reading the internet links from the article and maybe adding here and there a few words. So, don't get discouraged, if you stick to it, this will be done. Ideally, one would like something like British Army uniform, but we can go with less here. So, now you see the minimum (present state) and maximum (British Army). You, with a little help from others, can do smth in the middle. It will be great achievement, and DYK will come as a bonus. Dc76\talk 23:22, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, I did not say quite that. As it is, at least half of the article's information is present on that website. We don't want to have copycats of various internet pages, don't we? And it is not a topic with scarce sources. Think of DYK as a by-product, not as an aim in itself. Sooner or later it will have a DYK link, don't worry. You have my support in what concerns ref, size and dates for the DYK. But the article needs to be improved. And you can. It is not as if you cann't.Dc76\talk 23:51, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- Excellent. Dc76\talk 00:12, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- Read more from the book, compare with the British Army uniform, ask aslo BillC. As I said, in the coming days I will also read in more detail the links from the article. You see, I am not American, I know nothing about the subject. To give you a good answer about what you can do, I need first to know what is missing, what is presented uneven (with too much or too little stress). But I do not know that. You, also with the book in face of you, know! Ask also the fellow editor below, surely he or she can suggest something. It is not an exam. You find pleasure in writing articles, you are not fulfilling minimal requirements. It has to be something that a scholar would say "here is a clear and neat review covering all essential aspects". Today I have to go, but I will gladly help you in the future. Dc76\talk 00:29, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- I am not alone who thinks that. cheers. Dc76\talk 00:34, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- You are welcome. See you around. Dc76\talk 00:38, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Yes, looks good. I'll add a note at Template talk:Did you know. Regards, — BillC talk 23:35, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

FYI, I left a comment regarding sourcing on the Samuel W. Ferguson. Please provide the sourcing detail for the Black,Barnwell's, 9-10 ref. When completed reply at DYK. Thanks, Mitico (talk) 16:53, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- Is the source provided reliable? Per google books Its a literary travel guide that asks the reader to have a "sense of humor." (I am taking it out of context?) Some (limited) independent research did not provide any further verification of this hook. Can you either provide a secondary source or consider changing the hook? I left a note on the DYK page asking for a second opinion about this hook and good faith. It's a good article, and I'm sure it will meet the standards. I'd like to see what the experienced DYK'ers say. Also, I tried to clarify the currency to $US20,000. Thanks. Mitico (talk) 21:33, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have confirmed the hook. I was not intending to be difficult. I was just concerned that the first source may have been unreliable (Wp:RS). I sensed it may have been more entertainment than factual. I appreciate you providing the second source. It removes any doubt, in my mind, that this hook can be used. Thanks. re: Howdy
Howdy Roger, can I ask you for a favor, can you do a thorough copyedit on the article Uniforms of the Confederate States military forces. If you can thank you so much, and if you cannot can you please lead me to someone who can.(I am trying to get this article to Good Article Status) Thanks so much and have a great day!--Duke R. Oliver I His Duchy 20:46, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Nice work so far but a copyedit at this stage is probably premature as the article is far short of GA standard. While it's copiously illustrated, the text needs expanding significantly. There is no shortage of specialist material on the subject:

It looks like it's been verified and is queued up for the next update. Congratulations, —Politizer talk/contribs 17:56, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
Added UBX of interest
I added a userbox I created in opposition to the Fairness Doctrine on your userpage. Also shown is from my sandbox back in August a link to an edit of a body of the letter I sent to Nancy Pelosi at the bottom of the article that was deleted by some Obama supporters you may find of interest.

John Herbert Kelly
I was just looking at John Herbert Kelly in your sandbox, and it looks interesting. Was there any younger generals on either side? 23 is very young for a general. Make sure you cite his age when he became general, even if its nto at teh end of a paragraph, as that's your best DYK hook.--Gen. Bedford his Forest 21:45, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

- Until they fix the dropdown you have to lookup November and then finagle the URl by changing 11 to 12. http://stats.grok.se/en/200812/Henry%20C.%20Wayne shows 2.7k hits.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 21:20, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
