Truman Capote - basically 3 issues - souces not cited for each problem, incorrect information about Homo-SEX in film AND misquoting

4 February 2011 – Capote

I read the information on correcting citations from sources such as film (or personally witnessed source citation) and flagging biased, inflammatory, and incorrect information and missing, incorrect or questionable source citations and I had several options from my understanding of the Wiki rules on correcting or flagging to be corrected or correctly cited.

I personally own my own copy of the FULL LENGTH film, uncut (or, director's full release version/cut) on DVD - watched film, then watched it a THIRD time w/ the director's commentary on during this last viewing in the past two days.

Could I use my own observations regarding the observational source of both seeing this film multiple times (I own it) and viewing it while playing the director’s commentary – and making corrections WHILE referencing this article and the errors in the one section? If my own observations can be used, exactly how is this correctly cited?

1. Missing Citations in each area that I am addressing – which is exclusively in the section about the 2006 Film Release, “Infamous” by Writer and Director Douglas McGrath.

2. Incorrect information about a Capote and Perry Smith having sex in Smith’s Jail Cell during a particular scene

3. Biased language that is incorrect used when describing the director’s use of source material that he, the director supposedly (according to Wiki author of this original statement) arrived at directly by “FREQUENTLY” using storylines directly created in his (director’s) ““imagination.”” I detail the situations when the director must use this technique when creating such a film below, in following paragraphs. Additionally, the director explains this process, his explanation is utilized in my response to this very serious creative accusation based on personal opinion and a much different version of the reality of how really infrequently this method was pulled from the director’s creative tool chest and wielded to in an attempt to draw, IMAGINE and get creative while making this film, and trying to make an unknown connection tether two well known people and occurrences. This director can actually be referenced and stating something to this effect, about the personal use of imagination occurring when needed to prop-up a true occurrence. More information about the extreme language and faulty perceptions that lack citation follow… Paraphrasing on certain words in this next personal statement about the importance of language stylings, choice of words and how it impacts readers is very important and must be vigilantly overseen in a forum such as Wikipedia. The ideas about vigilance over neutrality in artic ales and how this did not occur in a particular section in this Wiki Article about Truman Capote as conveyed in this one paragraph about the portrayal Truman Capote in the 2006 film, “Infamous” has made quite an impression on this a critical thinker and reader/researcher. And, I must confess, that it is this impression that still lags behind in my head at this time, also. If I had never previously viewed this movie, OR, I had not seen it in a great while, I would definitely back away and think twice about it about after reading this author's opinion based summary about the film. Which consisted of just a handful of sentences but conveyed much more than the information that was on the written page.

The director did not "Frequently" create details about Capote or the story of the creation of "In Cold Blood", he did say that he propped up real instances and occurrences occasionally using his imagination in an attempt to realistically piece together how certain real situations came about AND director, during his commentary on the DVD commentary track notes each instance that is not completely true or which situation that is necessarily propped up by his intellectual creative process because the truth behind how the real situation evolved is no longer available as a result of the time induced loss of credible or living witnesses. The director is thorough in pointing out the occasional instance in which something has a basis in his imagination, so thorough that he even mentions REAL locations in Kansas vs. set locations in Texas.

This Wiki author made biased comments about the credibility of this director, his researcher(s) and other film staff when choosing to use words such as "frequently" in his opinions or perceptions about the factualness of this movie. Additionally, the author failed to cite any set of reliable sources that condemned the film as being "frequently" based on scenarios created using his " "imagination" ".

During the film, there is no sex scene between Capote and Perry Smith - actually only one scene in which they mutually kiss and another in which Smith, on his way to being hanged, while cuffed and chained, being led to the gallows, kisses Capote gently on the cheek. The way that the author comments on or references an imaginary sex scene that has never occurred in the film is inflammatory and smacks of homophobia - making it, the film, Capote and the relationship sound as if all are or can be quickly summarized or distilled down to their bare-bones sexual functioning’s and quickly dismissed as the "queers", "perverts", "sex-fiend homo-sexuals".

I want to explain this comment and why this author's statement(s) regarding the two real life, formerly living men being detailed or highlighted as "having sex" in a film and so obviously incorrectly cited as "having sex" when no situation of this sort occurs appears to possibly be the age-old hetero-sexual or homo-homophobe method of subversely, stealthily red-flagging something to be avoided because it is "Homo-SEXUAL". I have one year of work experience w/ a gender, disability and queer studies professor and training academically under my belt in "Queer Studies" and "Deviant Culture" during the time that I was acquiring my advanced degrees (the last completed in Dec., 2007), one of which is a researcher and statistician in Social Science related field, I lack the full language to describe how this original comment hit me, smacking me hard on the forehead and straight between my eyes. It was that sucker punch that an educated person feels when they KNOW that something that was said, written or printed was wrong, but cannot fully describe it for lack of knowledge about the language and words that would normally be used to highlight and focus on such a socially incorrect use of language to stir up bias, misperceptions and immediate dislike or, at the least, cautiousness by the majority be using particular language, keywords and descriptions to quickly distill something down to the common, hated variable of the majority.

SINCE this article is ALSO part of the GLBT stub, PLEASE, if issue about my removal of information that is incorrect, not cited and, in my opinion as both a professional who has worked in the field academically for a year and is degreed in the closely related field - oh, and am also a person belonging to this subsection on our society - believes that this gay sex related comment was used in a very questionable manner (red flag) - please have it reviewed if it is decided that a kiss is the same as "having sex" and there is the possibility that "having sex" is going to be reinstated in this article in the "Portrayals" section in reference to Capote and Smith.

Not only is the comment incorrect, not cited, but it is the type of comment that is or can be used to flag something by people (ie: “The Moral Majority”, conservative peoples in our nation, etc…) who do not understand and dislike these types of media releases about homo-sexuals or other minority groups – and there is a sophisticated system of language (including format, punctuation, placement in certain or specific ways) used in a way to ward off potential viewers or participants - in this instance, to comment directly about homo-sexual being’s and, with the fact that not more than a handful of sentences are used for this one particular citation, it is interesting that there is this highly notable, unexplainable error (just how could such a mistake be made regarding two people having sex OR not having it, in this instance) – which plays to a many people’s feelings of revulsion and disgust for homo-sexual men and their perceived constant need for sex, which also leads to this crowd’s argument about mental stability and maturity of homo-sexual men, who, in this instance, were supposedly “Doing IT” in a jail cell, after barely having met. And, if a person is part of the population that has a dislike, cautiousness or these types of misperceptions about homo-sexual beings and their ability to form realistic, non-intercourse based relationships, that they are incapable of forming emotional and mature attachments - so, "stay away from this film" is the underlying, yet blatant message that will be quickly denied by the author of such a message that is placed in the form of a sentence - and in this instance, a completely untrue statement, also. Again, I am attempting to explain cultural manipulations and techniques that I don't have a full vocabulary to describe - so please get an academic in queer studies, gender studies if none are available in queer studies, and have them both verify the inaccuracy of the actual statement and describe the nature of such a comment in this document. If the director "FREQUENTLY" " "IMAGINED" " details to place in his movie, and the other issue was the placement of this incorrect statement about Capote having SEX w/ the murder Perry Smith in his cell, could there not have been another example of the impropriety of the director in this film be exemplified using a different situation? NOT CITED, no source citation or no explanation as to where the author's information about the film came from - including this "Sex Scene".

I do know of two reputable, published Queer Studies academics who are oft cited in media that may be willing to address this issue about the use of referencing sexual liaisons of homosexuals - frequently incorrectly, too, by a person who is either inexperienced w/ homosexual culture or a has homo-phobic nature about her/him) and how this type of citation (whether it is a correct comment or incorrect one about a possible sexual encounter btwn people of the same gender. If you are considering re-placing this information in the article, please gather legitimate Queer Studies Professional before making this decision or contact be about the two academics that I am slightly acquainted w/ and maybe we could get them to give input on this particular situation and, possibly maybe they would be willing to assist on future Wikipedia questions, too! We can never have enough educated (not just academically educated, either) people on board, right? lmc

28 March 2011 I checked into my ideas and perceptions noted above - about the homophobic comments and incorrect statements made in certain sections of this page on Capote. The homophobia that seemed to so evident to me was easily summed up by a professor who has experience and degrees in this area, Dr. C. Coughlin from BGSU stated to me in conversation,

"...if the scene were of a male inmate and female visitor kissing in a cell have even been noted? And, if it were mentioned, would it called (or perceived) as the entire sex act?"

This was an easy and perfect conclusion to what I was explaining above. I wanted to make sure to add this to this page, in case my changes were researched or looked into further. lmc

Regarding adoption

Hi Lmc33. I'm afraid I'm unable to take you on for adoption at the moment - I just don't have time to take on any new adoptees. However, I think adoption is a great idea - I've adopted dozens of people in the past, and I'm sure it could really help you. Have a look at this list, and see if there's anyone with a green header who you like the sound of. Those with amber headers have declared themselves unavailable. Another option, if you fancy teaching yourself is tot ake advantage of the teahouse, where there are some very helpful volunteers who answer questions very quickly.
