Your writing lovely to read, and I hope you continue!

Ok, is it clear, though, that claiming something is "fair use" does not make it so? Just as an obvious example, go to Playmate. Click on some of the links at the bottom of the article. Notice what you DON'T see -- with very rare exceptions any picture that was published in Playboy. It's a safe bet that the Wiki editors who spent time on those articles would like nothing better than to show pictures ( probably even the women and their agents would like that! ) The problem is that Playboy will sue. One cannot fill out a "fair use" template and publish Playboy's pictures of Marilyn Monroe! (Except, if you check Marilyn Monroe, the magazine cover. Book, magazine and CD covers are considered an exception that is allowed under fair use.)

Here's the Wiki page on Fair Use. See the section on "Common misunderstandings".

You might consider doing nothing for now, but be aware that an editor or a bot is probably going to come along at some point, and litter your user Discussion page with copyright violation warnings. (And, if you don't respond, possibly automatically delete images from your article 7 days thereafter.) If you scroll down this page, you'll see some of the arguments that have caused other images to be deleted (Under the several "Images" sections.) [1]

There's another little wrinkle here. Not everyone agrees with the way "fair use" is handled by Wiki. This group wants a considerable number of the existing images -- that have been posted for years under "fair use" -- to be deleted. When I uploaded a large photo that I took of an intricate book cover, I was politely informed by an editor that this might invite a "discussion" with the "anti-fair use people", and that I should reduce the photo size to 200px width.

In another case, I was writing an article describing a conflict between two artists, one who had drawn a version of the other's character which they did not like. The "disliked" version was posted in the article. So I took a picture of the other one, for purposes of comparison. (I.e., I was defending the original artist's position.) The next thing that happened was that the OTHER picture was deleted for not being fair use. But not mine. Now, there is also a fair use question on my photo. I actually wrote the artist's estate describing the situation, and asking for permission to leave the photo up. So far, my photo hasn't been deleted. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

These are easy to defend under "fair use": 1) A photo you took yourself in a public place. 2) A photo you took of something you own -- for example a drawing or diagram you made for a term paper. 3) Any picture from the Wikipedia Commons: [2]. 4) A picture of something whose copyright has expired.

Try replacing the trilobite, it might look better. As for the portal, hmmm. Not really sure. Don't suppose it would be possible to place it between the intro and the two lower boxes (selected article and selected picutre)? Mark t young (talk) 20:05, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Liopleurodon93! I noticed your name is on the WikiProject Animals participants' list. As you may have noticed, this project suffers a terrible dearth of members. Resultantly, the few editors we have (you among them) must run the project. Here are some tasks with which you can help, if you are so inclined:

  • Recruit more members!

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 03:43, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Endeiolepis.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Endeiolepis.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk 17:40, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of David Lindley (palaeontologist) for deletion

[edit]

A discussion has begun about whether the article David Lindley (palaeontologist), which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/David Lindley (palaeontologist) until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.

You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. The-Pope (talk) 13:55, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Mahala Andrews has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced, since 2008, bio mini stub.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. A tag has been placed on Template:Onychodontida requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it must be substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Bulwersator (talk) 09:34, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 21:19, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Vertebrate palaeontology edition2&3.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Vertebrate palaeontology edition2&3.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:46, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article Jorge Luna has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. j⚛e deckertalk 02:05, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Tristichopterus.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Tristichopterus.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Dipteroides has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

It seems the genus doesn't exist, or at best, is no longer existing. Both of the non-wikidata identifiers mark it as deleted or unaccepted. Also, the article has no citations, I couldn't find any citations other than the identifiers, and the identifiers also say it has no species.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ✶Mitch199811✶ 23:04, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
