Input requested at WP:FPC

[edit]

Hi Heds,

Having made a quick check on the history of Insect mouthparts I noticed you created the article. I recently nominated an image I added to this article, Image:Australian painted lady feeding closeup.jpg at FPC. One recurring argument, and one which I disagree, is that the image in question has no encyclopaedic value in this article. I was wondering if you, as an editor of the article in question, could help resolve this issue? Thanks, --Fir0002 01:06, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fir002,

I've read through the debate. First, you should know I'm not into featured pictures, articles etc, although the criteria that underpin them do, I guess, help improve the quality of articles for those trying to acheive them. Second, I'm not sufficiently experienced with WP:WPC to have an opinion on whther your image meets the guidelines. What I can say, though, is that as an entomologist I can see value in your shot, although it does contain unfortunate ambiguity for the novice viewer, such as the right forleg apparently appearing from the the head; the black background is unfortunate too. To be frank, I think the other painted lady shot shows a better profile of a butterfly proboscis in use, but it's not a good enough close up to use in the mouthparts article. Heds (talk) 03:14, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough - thanks a lot for your reply anyway! --Fir0002 05:32, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jim Neversink

[edit]

Hello - I saw you did something on Jim Neversink, but I am new here and am not sure what it means. It seems like you removed a tag saying it needs person data, but you left the one that says it needs an infobox. Were you just interested in the persondata, and left the rest of the data as they are, or do you think an infobox is missing? Many thanks --SkaraB 08:33, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, and welcome! I made changes as requested here by PC78. Your observation suggests the request could have included removal of infobox tag too, which makes sense - I just performed the operation requested. You might have a chat with PC78 and let me know if further work is required.Heds (talk) 05:38, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion on achieving italicised article names

[edit]

As mentioned here, I propose that project arthropods members discuss and settle on a single approach to achieving italicised article names (where relevant). The options appear to be: 1 delete "name=" from taxoboxes; and 2 include {{italictitle}} at the head of those articles that need it. Please add your support and arguments below. Depending on the result, I may use AWB to make bulk changes. Heds (talk) 02:05, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Option 1 (taxobox option)

[edit]

Option 2 (tag option)

[edit]

Support - it doesn't interfere with taxobox design and uses a fix that is desinged for the purpose. Heds (talk) 02:05, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Support I agree with Heds. -Megan McCarty talk|Sign here! 16:25, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Support If it can be automated, as Heds implies, then this would be very convenient. Assuming, of course, that it doesn't *create* any problems when implemented. Can anyone anticipate any? Dyanega (talk) 20:43, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Other options

[edit]
  1. A bot. Bugboy52.4 | =-= 00:26, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Include the {{italtitle}} template within {{Taxobox}} Tim1357 (talk) 04:59, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No opinion

[edit]

I have no opinion on this issue! I'll go along with the majority but wont spend wikitime to italise. IMHO much more urgent things such as adding missing articles still persist. AshLin (talk) 11:34, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Anatomy?

[edit]

You say you do anatomy? Maybe you can add info about the anatomy to the insect orders. I made the WP:INS mostly to collaborate with other editors and bring the insect orders to GA. Currently I am doing Earwig, and it needs to be expanded on basic anatomy (maybe also differences with it's anatomy and other insects), can you help? Bugboy52.4 | =-= 03:28, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Will have a go (I'm a slow editor with 4 kids, though!). Have thought about the need for this project. Do you intent to go as far as transferring all the insect articles currently tagged with {{ArthropodTalk}} to {{WikiProject Insects}}? Have previously taken other subordinate projects out of WP:ARTHA (eg WP Spiders, WP Lepidoptera) so that articles are tagged by only the most subordinate projects. This would take WP Lepidoptera out of WP Insects, which seems to conflict with your aim to have ordinal articles up to GA by this project. Nice work on earwigs, by the way. Heds (talk) 01:34, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers

[edit]

There were two progress boxes, now merged, the numbers in the categories may not add up exactly, as someone may have put them in explicitly. However the difference you obtained would suggest another problem, I cut and pasted the progress box into open office, and the figures add up. Did you keep your working? Space

[edit]

Hi. Could you modify your AWB edits so that they do not add an extra space after the italictitle template? It pushes the entire article down and creates unnecessary white space. mgiganteus1 (talk) 02:49, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sure thing.Heds (talk) 02:54, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Italicization"

[edit]

Heds, do you speak spanish? I have seen that you, like me, are very interested in writing the titles of the articles in italics, when they correspond to binomial nomenclature. In the spanish Wikipedia, I started a very very long discussion (more than 250 paragraphs) to implement italics too. Just for using the template DISPLAYTITLE!! I couldn't imagine the strong opposition that some users were gonna do to use italics in the titles.

For the english Wikipedia, I have seen that you use AWB, but I didn't get to install it. Do you know some program like that to work faster?

I saw your bot request Wikipedia:Bot_requests#Italicising_article_names_for_species_and_genera. Have a good luck with that. I'm not sure if I could only imagine to do that in a future. Flakinho (talk) 02:49, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Flakinho. No, I don't speak Spanish. Strange that there should be disagreement re italicising articles, as it's about a scientific standard, not preference, and certainly not peculiar to particular languages. You might want to point your discussion of the issue to the en debate, which ended ages ago. I'll try later to find it for you. But see below.
Thanks re the bot request. ?You might note that I'm taking the matter back to the highest order project to see a resoluton on mechanism can be found. I'll try to keep you informed as it goes.
If you can't access AWB, I don't know what to suggest. But it was even the slowness of doing it by AWB that suggested a need for a bot. Heds (talk) 11:13, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Italics of Lepidoptera

Hi Heds, I saw the link to User:Heds/Italic title project on your user page and wanted to let you know that I'm working on Lepidoptera. My main target is capitalization fixes, but I'm also italicizing the scientific names. My To do: and Done: list is at User:SchreiberBike/Lepidoptera caps.
