"one of the best Wikipedians of all time"

Thank you for quality articles such as Pierre Bezukhov, Oklahoma Historical Society and Student National Medical Association, for fighting vandalism, for admin services from 2007 when you were regarded as "one of the best Wikipedians of all time", for "rarely will I block without the consensus of other admins", - Katie, you are an awesome Wikipedian!

For your enjoyment

Hello KK. I hope that you are well. I saw this thread Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous#knitting_symbles and thought you would get a kick out of it. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 02:37, 25 November 2017 (UTC)

@MarnetteD: Hi! How have you been? That's funny watching Bugs try to give knitting advice! What are you working on these days? I'm doing this in Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock for my daughter-in-law for Christmas. The pattern is great and the yarn is awesome but, sadly, I chose a little mini-skein kit that has a bunch of deep purples which all kind of look alike, and now I'm having trouble keeping them all straight. Oops. ;-) Katietalk 13:08, 25 November 2017 (UTC)
Hi again KK. I am doing okay. Nice pattern but I can see where having similar colors would be confusing. I'm working on a couple hats as well. They always make nice gifts at this time of year :-) Cheers.MarnetteD|Talk 13:38, 25 November 2017 (UTC)

Dane Smith page

Hi, you deleted and protected Dane Smith after repeated recreation. Could you look at the related Dane Smith (basketball) and see whether it know meets minimum standards? Thanks. Tassedethe (talk) 01:05, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

@Tassedethe: The prose is much improved, but it fails the basketball section of WP:NSPORT. Sourcing is still inadequate, as it uses his own Facebook/Instagram/Twitter pages as references, as well as a self-published autobiography. Apparently, he's mainly known for appearing in a television commercial. There are two local newspaper articles about him, and that's about it. I'm not going to send it to AFD because I don't have time, but I doubt it would survive a deletion discussion. Katietalk 04:48, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

CU results

Given my misunderstanding here, could you give me a rundown on what each of the CU results actually mean? Sir Sputnik (talk) 20:15, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

Katie if you would do me a favor and glance at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/BriefingMan, I'm fairly convinced this is a duck case where every disruptive user at the mentioned article is the same person. Apologies for my rambling build up of my note there. If not sock, then clearly some sort of meat going on. -- ferret (talk) 19:01, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

ANI Experiences survey

Beginning on November 28, 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) will be conducting a survey to en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

Last night I made a small edit in Wiki-Hebrew (therefore I'm not sure if you can help me, but I'll try anyway:), but as a reckless newbie I didn't notice that if I don't register, my IP address will become public. I have since registered, and wanted to know if it's possible to hide my IP address from that edit, or ever delete it so I can reedit from my new username.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2017

News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2017).

Administrator changes

added Joe Roe
readded JzG
removed EricorbitPercevalThinggTristanbVioletriga

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.

Technical news

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.

Welcome to the 2018 Arbitration Committee

Congratulations on your success in the election and welcome to the 2018 Arbitration Committee! We will now induct you and the other new arbitrators. Please email arbcom-en-c@lists.wikimedia.org indicating which, if any, of the checkuser and oversight permissions you wish to be assigned for your term. If you already hold both these permissions, please still send this email, because we will subscribe the email you contact us from to the various committee mailing lists. The email address will also be used to register you on the various private wikis.

Over the coming days, you will receive a small number of emails. Please carefully read them. If they are registration emails, please follow any instructions in them to finalise registration. You can contact me or any other arbitrator directly if you have difficulty with the induction process. Lastly, you must sign the Wikimedia Foundation's confidentiality agreement prior to being subscribed to any mailing lists or assigned checkuser or oversight permissions. Please promptly go to the Access to nonpublic information noticeboard and follow the instructions there if you are not already signed the confidentiality agreement.

Thank you for volunteering to serve on the committee. We very much look forward to introducing ourselves to you on the mailing list and to working with you this term.

User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

Fixer88

Please have a look at User talk:Fixer88/Archive 1#Mistaken identity and Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)/Archive 52#Accusation - I accuse an editor of being a bot regarding Fixer88. There seems to be sufficient evidence linking him to these nonsense-spouting sockpuppets, at least in the past (and CU has linked MetlifeWP and PCruiser to the farm you listed), but ArbCom has unblocked Fixer88. It may be worth reaching out to ArbCom to advise them of the situation and seeing how this relates to the block appeal. – Train2104 (t • c) 15:33, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

@Train2104: I'm aware of the situation, but thanks for reaching out. I'm having another CU look at it, and as I said, I'm not willing to block right now. When I'm able to look in the Arbcom mailing list archives in January, I'll be able to see for myself. Thanks again. :-) Katietalk 19:50, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Since you concluded they're unrelated, do you want to go back to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Fixer88 and retag them all, too? The oldest account is probably MetlifeWP. – Train2104 (t • c) 23:35, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
One of the SPI clerks is going to retag the ones listed in the current case. I'm going to leave the older ones alone; if Fixer88 wants them retagged, he can ask one of the CUs who worked that case. Katietalk 23:38, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays
From Stave one of Dickens A Christmas Carol

Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail.

So you see even Charles was looking for a reliable source :-) Thank you for your contributions to the 'pedia. ~ MarnetteD|Talk 23:18, 24 December 2017 (UTC)

Quick check?

Katie, would you be willing to run a check on Iron.secrets as a Lurulu sock? This one has been around for a bit, has the same name pattern that's been in use this last year, but only now hit one of the articles I keep an eye on. Just want to double check if you are willing. -- ferret (talk) 16:28, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

@Ferret: Unlikely to Lurulu based on geolocation. Sorry. Katietalk 16:37, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

CU logs

I have question about the CheckUser logs. How much of the information gleaned from a check can be reviewed in the logs after the fact? Specifically, I'm concerned about this case, which has stagnated because Courcelles is largely inactive these days. Is it possible for another CheckUser to review the case and see at least some what he saw? Sir Sputnik (talk) 18:24, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

@Sir Sputnik: I can tell if the account or IP has been checked, when it was checked, and the rationale. Courcelles did discuss this with the functionaries. I was one of the CUs who ran it again, and we concurred that all these accounts are MbahBotak. I'll block them accordingly in just a moment, and you can close after that. Thanks for following up. :-) Katietalk 18:31, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
