The Movement Theatre Company
[edit]Hi! I noticed that you created an article on The Movement Theatre Company. I have some notes on this, as the page still needs some work and isn't really ready to be a live page just yet. I've moved it back to your sandbox at User:Kgazoo/sandbox for the time being. Here are my notes as a whole:
- Be extremely careful about writing in a neutral tone. Some of the content can be seen as promotional. For example, I removed the following content because it is something that you'd typically read in something that promoted the company:
- "The Movement has set itself apart from other New York companies, by continuing to break boundaries and experiment with theatre and art. One of the most unique qualities of TMTC is their usage of non-traditional spaces, like museums, movie theatres, and gardens for their productions. Be it the setting, controversial topics, or combined styles -- TMTC has been working for the past nine years to bring new theatre to the scene in festivals and workshops in the American theatre scene."
- This is sort of your typical promotional speech and while it wouldn't raise an eyebrow elsewhere, it doesn't really fit here. This can be something that takes a while to get used to on here, so be extra careful about this.
- I noticed that the sourcing for the article was almost entirely primary, meaning that it was released by a person, group, event, or business that is affiliated with the Company. While these can back up basic details, it isn't something that would be able to show notability on Wikipedia regardless of what it claims. All organizations must have independent, reliable sourcing in order to establish notability, regardless of the type of organization. You do have one source here, but it's not enough to really satisfy notability criteria. A review of one of their productions can help, but you'd need about 4-5 of them on average. Be careful of awards and nominations, as nominations do not give notability on Wikipedia and only a few awards are considered to be major enough to give even partial notability. It's kind of tough to establish notability on awards, to be honest, unless the awards are incredibly major.
When looking for sourcing, make sure to double check for press releases and avoid self-published sourcing. Not all outlets will mark a press release as one, however a typical trademark is that they won't attribute an author to the piece. When in doubt, google some of the content in the article - if it's repeated verbatim elsewhere, it's most likely a press release, which is considered to be a primary source. Also be careful of self-published sourcing, as this is almost never usable on Wikipedia. Sometimes it's easy to tell what's usable - WordPress blogs typically aren't, but sometimes it can be a little difficult. For example, an article written by the Huffington Post's main staff would be OK, but the site also puts out self-published work, which is usually un-edited. This work is usually marked as a blog or the person writing the piece is marked as a contributor whereas staff members will just have their name and a link to their staff page. It can get pretty tricky, so I'd recommend avoiding the HuffPo.
In any case, the company sounds like it's really interesting and offhand I don't think that you'll have a hard time finding sourcing. I mostly wanted to move it so that you can have more time to fix these issues. When something is moved live there's always a risk of deletion and there's never a true guarantee that the next person to see the page will fix the issues. - To follow up on this in order to give you some more helpful feedback, the article was written in a tone fit for an uplifting story or company brochure, rather than a neutral encyclopedia article, and would have required a complete rewrite in order to be acceptable. Sentences like
Between August and October of 2020 the response team travels across the country in an RV to identify communities in need, execute deliveries, and hear and share stories to better understand this food supply crisis.
feel like they're lifted from a press release, and are particularly unacceptable when not supported by any citation to an independent source. The article also excessively cited non-reliable sources, such as Forbes contributors and non-independent sources such as the organization's corporate partners, signed, Rosguill talk 23:02, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
