Kelisi, welcome to Wikipedia. Please see the note I left for you at Talk:Archipelago. Your accusations of plagiarism are false -- while I share your concerns (I am myself an English teacher), I wish you had taken more care before making such a serious allegation! If you find any of the comments I made (or the links I left you) confusing, please leave me a note and I'd be happy to explain. I admit the situation gets a bit confusing. Best regards, Jwrosenzweig 21:08, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Ontario boundaries - Ontario article

Ontario bounded by Wisconsin? What border does Ontario share with Wisconsin? I come from Thunder Bay and even Superior Wisconsin is a hell of a long way across the lake. Minnesota absolutely, we Thunder Bay people know Minnesota like a book (see Pigeon River (Minnesota-Ontario), but Wisconsin?--BrentS 04:41, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

You're right, actually. I thought there was an offshore boundary, but it's clear from Isle Royale's position that there couldn't be one with Wisconsin. I'll change it. Kelisi 17:23, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Trinidad and Tobago Map

I like the new map. Thanks for adding it. Guettarda 21:43, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Please stop adding these ugly maps. The colors are way too strong. —Cantus 22:49, Mar 24, 2005 (UTC)

The colors on your maps are pretty bright. Also, the text on them is pretty small, when they're reduced to the ~300px size that is generally used for illustrations. —wwoods 17:24, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I see no reason for your replacement of perfectly good maps with your amateurish looking ones. Jooler
C'mon - the CIA maps suck. Maybe Kelisi's map isn't perfect, but it's no worse than that old one. Guettarda 18:47, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I'll put it a bit more plainly. The CIA maps are nothing more than beige smudges which could hardly be called "perfectly good", nor even informative. The maps that I have made show more places, name more features, and are generally a bit bigger. As to the colours, if that is your only problem with the maps, change the colours. As to the writing being small, click on the map for an enlargement. I shall continue to revert all edits that remove these maps. Wikipedia deserves better than those featureless CIA maps. Kelisi 18:56, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of your map you have broken the 3RR rule at Panama, and been reported for it; so you may be blocked. You should (a) refer the issue to talk pages, and (b) stop edit warring; all you are doing is alienating people with your contempt for the 3RR rule. 3 people have reverted you at Panama and you keep reverting in a show of total arrogance. Please stop it. --SqueakBox 23:43, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)

I am not against your maps. I am neutral on that one. I am against the way you have been edit warring to impose them. Where there is a dispute, even if just with Cantus, please bring the debate to the relevant talk page. --SqueakBox 00:36, Mar 26, 2005 (UTC)

I like the new map colours Geni put in Panama. I believe that by getting support on the talk pages and avoiding edit warring you will strengthen your case; if you do things properly, and work with the new colour scheme I for one am supportive of getting rid of the CIA maps, --SqueakBox 17:37, Mar 27, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for the support. I have already begun the conversions, and new maps will appear — on Talk pages first — for other Wikipedians' perusal. Kelisi 22:29, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for adding this map to Use of death penalty worldwide a while back. I do have a question about one area in particular. To the north-east of New Zealand is a chain of four islands, coloured yellow, black and blue signifying that they are all different countries but it would appear that they are all in fact part of Tonga and as such should be yellow (Abolitionist in Practice). Evil MonkeyHello 22:14, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the information. The problem I always find with maps is that they work well for the Continents but completely fall apart for all the islands in the various Oceans.
Also looking at the article for Northern Marianas it would appear that it is part of the US, so it would be orange. According to Lonely Planet and Foreign Office the death penalty was abolished in 2002 on Turks and Caicos Islands. Not sure about the other three unknowns, though they would be tricky, all being partially unrecognised parts of other countries (especially Northern Cyprus which is only recognised by Turkey). Evil MonkeyHello 01:37, Mar 29, 2005 (UTC)

I have found out that Bermuda abandoned hanging in 1999 and am deciding whether to amend the map to incude a blue dot in the Atlantic. Meanwhile, someone else has updated Mexico. Kelisi 01:49, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Maps: working with you

You're taking a lot of heat on these maps. May I suggest you cool them out for a little while? I think you've found a useful resource, and I can help you to exploit it. But as they stand now, the maps just annoy people. We can fix that; trust me. — Xiongtalk 04:08, 2005 Apr 3 (UTC)

I don't really have time to go into detail just at the moment; I'm supposed to be working for Cash Money right now. In short, people object to the engine's choice of colors, and perhaps want to make other adjustments. Part of the problem is that you have replaced so many existing maps. Some people were happy with the old maps; some are upset that you made so many changes all at once. There may be copyright issues; it is not at all clear you can substantiate your claim of public domain. There are issues with the format of the images.

We can fix it all; I'm sure there's a good reason to salvage your effort. Give me a bit and I'll get back to you in more detail. — Xiongtalk 17:24, 2005 Apr 4 (UTC)

There are two basic problems with these maps:

1. Some users find the color scheme and other technical aspects objectionable.

2. The maps may not be free for use on Wikipedia at all. They are copyrighted, and not public domain.

We may be able to fix either or both of these problems. I believe download is supported in Adobe Illustrator format, which I may be able to work with -- I have not been able to do such a download, but that's a quibble. We may be able to work with the copyright owners to obtain a GFDL license for specific maps. That may be a lot tougher, but we can try. — Xiongtalk 06:49, 2005 Apr 16 (UTC)

I thank you for your efforts, but I don't understand your concern about copyrights. I made those maps myself, out of blanks that I got from Online Map Creation, which claims to be free. Kelisi 15:58, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Unfortunately the source may not be free; they seem to have evolved into Planiglobe, which displays a detailed copyright notice. Note also that the absence of a copyright notice does not place a work into the public domain. We may be able to work things out with these folks, but that's a task yet to be done. — Xiongtalk 17:24, 2005 Apr 16 (UTC)

2nd largest French city

AFAIK, the 2nd largest French-Speaking city is Montreal, not Kinshasa. While Kinshasa technically is more populated (around 5 millions), I'm not sure it has enough native speakers to be above MTL (3.6 millions). I'll gfladly change my opinion if you can provide more precise stats on French speaking in DRC Circeus 01:32, Apr 16, 2005 (UTC)

Aa/Å and Cut'n'Paste-moves

Hi!

Please don't move pages by cut'n'pasting the contents. Instead use the Move page button. Otherwise you lose the history. I have reverted those moves that were obvious, but please go over your moves yourself and check. If you find more, revert your changes and (if necessary) move the page using the move button. If it does not work, you will have to contact an administrator.

You might also want to verify the corrections you made. Aalborg is spelled with Aa in both Danish and English, and Aarhus is spelled with Aa in English (while not in Danish). I am not certain about the smaller towns, but please consider that even though they might not have an official English name, it might be proper to apply the usual translitteration rules and subsitute Aa for Å.

Editing

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:08, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

Nice article

Just saw your Eva-Maria Buch over on the newest articles list and I wanted you to know I enjoyed it--coherent and interesting, which is rare here for an article that's only five minutes old. Keep up the good work! --Dvyost 01:40, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

I added a "copyrighted" to this image. --ST 07:02, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

No, thats no case of § 72 UrhG. Please take a look at § 2 and at § 64 UrhG. cu --ST 18:21, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
You know full well that it is. It's quite explicit. You're just being a troublemaker. If you like, you can find the copyright holder and put him/her/them in touch with me. How's that? Kelisi 20:52, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't think it's helpfull to call me a troublemaker. In deWP such pictures of unknown authors are only allowed when the picture is made before 1900. This image is defenetly not that old. You put a copyrighted picture to enWP and it's your problem to find the copyright holder. Till that, the picture has to be deleted. --ST 07:55, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
This isn't German Wikipedia. Why should it be my problem to find the copyright holder? You are the one calling the photo into question. If such a person even exists, he or she can find me easily enough if he or she finds the photo on Wikipedia and objects. I would respect the copyright holder's wish for me to remove it. That would be no problem, but I do have a problem with people doing destructive things on Wikipedia. To me, you're little more than a vandal. Kelisi 16:47, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
How is he being a vandal? In this case, the presumption would seem to be that it is copywrited. And Wikipedia has tightened its policy in these cases, and the presumption is that permission does not exist. You are taking it from another site and basing your opinion on a guess about its age. I think it should be removed until we receive explicit permission or identification of its age. Tfine80 17:58, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm way ahead of you. I've written to the people who run the website where I got the picture to find out copyright information. As for Wikipedia tightening its rules, I think it's a crying shame that they're located in a country where the national pastime seems to take the form of suing the pants off each other. I don't think there's any need for this paranoia about possible copyrights on ancient photos, quite honestly. Kelisi 20:36, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Re: Plover Cove Reservoir

I did check the links, and they lead to articles related to Plover Cove Reservoir on a geography website, pictures of the reservoir, and a satellite image. — Instantnood 17:02, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

The second link are pictures of the reservoir, and the third link is a satellite image. Are they useless and garbage? — Instantnood 17:10, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
Wait.. seems like you're reaching something at Google that is different from what I get with the browser on my computer. Let's see if that's really the case, and figure out how we can get rid of it. — Instantnood 17:28, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
Yes.. but Chinese is more widely used by the people here. By searching in Chinese we'd be able to get more pictures. I'm not sure if that works well on every computer, but many non-Latin-based languages work well on mine. As for Google Maps, that link is to the satellite image. — Instantnood 09:57, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Re: Your edits on Malay Archipelago and your talk-page comment

Kelisi, you reverted an edit to the article Malay archipelago with the edit summary "rv -- deletion of pertinent information; insertion of bogus information.", and then proceded to write on my talk-page under the header Homosexuality Laws of the World "I second that. Cut it out! It is not all right to delete pertinent facts, nor is it all right to insert false information." (which I have now removed from my talk page). I think you have made a misjudgment (and a slight fool of yourself). I urge you to consult the edit histories so you know what you are talking about. I also urge you to take a peek at the Wikipedia guidelines and be guided by them. If you wish to contribute to this particular article and if that contribution involves major reverts, please do discuss this at the talk page beforehand. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. --Big Adamsky 07:02, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Maps in general, and maps of the Niagara Escarpment in particular

File:Niagara Escarpment in Red.png
your nice image
my map

Let me acknowledge that the map you made of the Niagara Escarpment is larger, more attractive than mine, and uses better colours -- possibily those in wikipedia map guidelines. I'd like to know how you managed that.

  1. How did you make it generate wider images?
  2. How did you get it use different colours?
  3. Did you have the perimeter of the escarpment in digital form? Where did you get the data? How did you add it to the raw map?

Having said that, can I ask you to explain why you say mine is "just plain wrong"? You did look at the source I provided that I based my map on? Perhaps it is wrong, or I don't understand geography well enough, but it is not obvious to me that the escarpment doesn't include the entire area I mapped out. How did you come by the perimeter you used? You included the spur that goes directly east of Hamilton. So why didn't you include the spur on the south west side of Lake Michigan?

FWIW I am also from Toronto. -- Geo Swan 01:23, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

You stitch them together in a paint program? Ah. That will only work with a mercator projection. I use either Lambert Azimuthal or Orthographic. Orthographic is far better for obscure places, like mid ocean islands.
What paint program do you use. I use irfanview for labeling. I bought a really cheap digital camera 6 years ago, that came with an adequate paint program. I downloaded gimp about six months ago. I keep meaning to learn how to use it. It is supposed to be really powerful.
When I first started making maps I came across some really beautiful ones. And the guy who made those maps had recently added to a page where some people were developing standards for map colours. He didn't use OMC. Unfortunately I didn't make note of his userid or the location of those standards pages. Maybe it came to nothing. It is a good idea however. -- Geo Swan 02:19, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
Ah. Microsoft Paint. I avoid Microsoft software if I can possibly avoid it. -- Geo Swan 04:09, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Image:HannoandLibertasSchulzeBoysen.jpg

Greetings !

Are you quite certain that the image Image:HannoandLibertasSchulzeBoysen.jpg qualifies as Public Domain ? If I understand the German laws correctly, works get Public Domain status 70 years after the photograph's death (the date of publication of the work is actually not relevant). If you happen to have further insight into this... At worse, I might draw a portait taking inspiration from the photograph, so we do have a Free image anyhow. Cheers ! Rama 13:10, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

I see your note about the German copyright law for Image:WilliGraf.png. Just go ahead and pick one of the options under Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and remove the {{no copyright notified}} tag from the article. Thanks! wknight94 01:34, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Star Trek TOS cleanups

(I think whoever wrote these synopses hasn't seen the series in many years)

Not to nitpick, but I'm the one who wrote most of these episode pages, including "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky". I peiced them together from what was already written here (which was usually crap), some stuff I remembered from the show (which is vauge, I admit), and from the numerous other episode synopsis pages floating around then internet - including the really breif ones at StarTrek.com. I understand I probably didn't capture every single detail correctly because I'm not that much of a "Trekkie", but I think I did a good job overall from what I had to work with. Wikipedia is all about improving and editing and thats fine by me, but cut me some slack - I don't sleep, eat and breathe Star Trek. Cyberia23 01:02, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

I wasn't taking it as an attack, I just wanted to let you know it all came down to what I had to work with, so the "BS" and "nonsense" was purely unintentional. Cyberia23 23:47, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

TGV

Hi, just wondering why, in the TGV article, Eurostar service needs a capital S on service?

And just to clarify: in the sentence "each journey's average start-to-stop speed is 263.3 km/h" - it really should be "one journey". it's only one particular journey from Lyon to Aix-en-Provence that has such a high start-to-stop average (shorter journeys have a lower start-to-stop average because the train isn't travelling at full speed for as long)

Cheers, Willkm 23:30, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, sorry, forgot they could be mistaken reverts due to multiple edits. Really sorry about officious-sounding messages! Your editing of the other points was certainly invaluable; the article's had a good cleanup having been on the front page. As far as the relentless edits were concerned, I was just trying to keep factual errors out (and plenty went in...), and with some it was certainly just being picky about the exact wording - sometimes someone going through the entire article rewording awkward sentences would miss the exact meaning/implication of the sentence and the implication would be wrong. With the bit about signals I was trying to clarify the fact that it was the risk of them not seeing what they were displaying that was the problem, rather than not being able to react fast enough. Thanks a lot for your work though, the article reads much better after being put under some good scrutiny! Willkm 20:03, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Lone years

Just to remind you that years on their own don't need linking: see Wikipedia:Only make links that are relevant to the context. I just spotted a lot of linked years in the TGV article! Willkm 23:19, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Firth of Lorne

I'm pleased that an article has been created on this firth, but why did you choose to spell it Lorne with and E when all the maps show it spelt as Lorn, as does the local council website and other officialdom eg [1]?--JBellis 21:30, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi,

The reason I keep marking the article about Hasso von Boehmer with the {{Nazi-stub}} template is because this template does not indicate that the subject of the article is a nazi but that the article deals with Nazi Germany.--Carabinieri 21:03, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Why is it an insult to this man's memory to have him in a stub category about the time he lived in? BTW, I personally don't think that headers like "Heil Hitler" are very appropriate.--Carabinieri 21:27, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Putting this template on his article does not mean to say anything about the person except for the time and place he lived in, and -- in this case -- what he fought against. This flag just happens to be the best symbol for Nazi Germany.--Carabinieri 21:44, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

OMC maps

I have just received yet another advisory from this mindless OrphanBot. All OMC maps – and there must be thousands on Wikipedia – are free. I shall place this text at the aforesaid map's image page:

This map's source is [http://www.aquarius.geomar.de/omc/make_map.html here], with the uploader's modifications, and the [http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/ GMT homepage] says that the tools are released under the GNU General Public License. == Licensing == {{GFDL-self}}

That goes for all the OMC maps that I've posted – or anyone else has posted – on Wikipedia. Thanks. Kelisi 17:07, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

I have also just had to reinstate an image that your bot mindlessly wiped out before I'd even had a chance to respond to the message that it left on my Talk page. I'm getting a little tired of your bot's vandalism. Kelisi 17:27, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

OrphanBot does not delete images. Assuming the image in question is Image:Domrepmap.gif, it was deleted by User:CLW. OrphanBot only removes images from articles, and notifies the uploader. If you want, I can add you to the list of people not to notify, but the images will be deleted whether or not OrphanBot is running. --Carnildo 04:54, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

West Lorne and hyphens

Hey,

Any chance you could flesh out the West Lorne article?? I'm hoping you might know something about the place as you're from that part of the world and edited the page.. my gf is from there and it was an attempt to show her how wonderful WP is, if others start adding it would float her boat... All I know is it's full of Portuguese immigrants and her family has a farm there... Ah, hyphens... one rule I like about hyphens is that they should be always be used when one adjective describes another adjective which describes the noun, such as "high-risk investment" or "long-lost relative". And finally, said gf is wondering about teaching in Saudi (we're both teaching E. in Portugal right now) which would probably be a solo mission for her. Any advice? Nice... • Nice one on Saudi and West Lorne, Portugal is hmmmm.. I've was in Korea for 2 years which was lucrative and lots of fun, this has been more of a serious experience year with business teaching. Money sucks and life is a little quiet, even in the city.. not staying beyond the end of contract, but might stay within the same company (Inlingua) who seem to be pretty centred for a franchise operation. Thanks for translating Fritz Reinhardt. I've been scanning Special:Newpages for about 30 minutes and it was very refreshing to see a new page that wasn't complete crap. Not only that, it's one of the better translations I've seen on wikipedia. Savidan 20:27, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Hello Kelisi,
I was pleased to find your translation of that article, which in turn is a translation (done by me) of the Luxembourgish version, written by lb:User:Cornischong. I skimmed your user page, and I think it's well done, too — especially the style guidelines. I must, however, admit that I never heard about that Lebensversicherungs-word ;-)

The Working Man's Barnstar
I award this Barnstar to Kelisi for hard work making good maps. I just saw your map of the Hebrides, and I was very impressed. Having worked with the same OMC program before myself, I can appreciate what a great amount of trouble you must have gone to to make that map so large, detailed, harmoniously coloured, interesting and informative. Well done!

Image Tagging for Image:Walter_Cramer.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Walter_Cramer.jpg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

Sherlock Holmes revisions

I feel I must take issue with you for reverting my edits to the "Sherlock Holmes" short story articles, when they were badly needed. For a start, even the first line of each (the story's title) did not conform to Wiki's MOS, by omitting the quotes. On top of this, several sentences included needless repetition of certain words, and some poor punctuation (e.g., colon followed by a capital letter). As you are a teacher of English, I'm bound to ask if the meaning of the word "synonym" is one that you regularly impart to your pupils? I was in the process of going through each article, purely for copy-editing. I had no intention of removing any content: merely respecting it and improving its flow. I had got as far as "The Copper Beeches", but seeing as you had reverted both that and "A Scandal in Bohemia", I was beginning to wonder, "What's the point?" Indeed, it was your justification for reverting the latter story ("rv dickering") that drove me to leave this message (somewhat in anger, I may add). If your problem with that story was the capitalisation throughout of "King", then for consistency's sake, I was only following the example with which you led: "the hereditary King of Bohemia", and also the customary form used when discussing the Royals. (In Britain, the current head of state is always referred to in written form as "the Queen".) I have no problem with anyone amending any of my edits, so long as they are grammatical and an improvement. I am disappointed that you should apparently consider your efforts to be perfect in every way — which nobody is. Chris 42 22:49, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Tassie map (2)

Hello, Do you have the image Image:Tazziemap.png in an alternate format at all (with layers - .psd or .xcf?)? I'm just asking because I would like to attempt to split up the image so that towns/highways/etc are on separate layers so that I can generate different maps, with different levels of detail, from the same source image. I didn't want to do this if you already had the file in such a format!

What was your source of town/highway etc. locations on the map - I notice that the site you generated the map from doesn't include them, so I guess they were overlaid from another source? How accurate are they?

Dautphetal

Hallo Kelisi,

the english article about Biedenkopf ist very nice. I'm the author of the articel Dautphetal and a coauthor of Biedenkopf. In the german Wikipedia Dautphetal is in review at present, so I would like to ask you, if you can translate this articel into english language. As you maybe can see, my english is very "rusty", because i didn't use is it over about 10 years. Greetings from Dautphetal, Hesse, de:Benutzer:Thomy3k 07:37, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Salon people of Myanmar?

Hi,

I noticed that you added "The Salon, a sea-dwelling people in southern Myanmar" to the Salon disambiguation page. What do you mean by sea-dwelling? I can't help but get pictures of mermaids in my head. Perhaps it could be reworded?

Thanks

Translation request

Hi again. If you get a chance, do you think you could translate the article on Friedrich Kittler, an important media theorist that for some reason appears to have been overlooked by the English wikipedia. It would be much appreciated. Don't worry about it if you are too busy; I put up a request at Wikipedia:Translation into English as well. Cheers, savidan(talk) (e@) 22:42, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Great work! Thanks a lot. I made only a minor change: the name for his school is called new media in the English rather than the more literal "technological media". savidan(talk) (e@) 02:52, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for translation

Hi, thank you very much for translating the german article about Homberg/Efze. Your solution with galeries for the pictures is very nice. I will change this in the german version as soon as I have a little bit of time. Sorry for my bad english, Johannes Götte from de:WP

Hi. One of the picture used in the infobox of the article (Karte von Homberg (Ohm).png) is missing. Since this seems to be a translation from the German Wikipedia, I'm not sure whether you forgot to upload it or if it is to be found under another name (couldn't find anything relevant here or on commons), but I wanted to let you know. Equendil Talk 22:41, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Equendil Talk 23:09, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Panorama Bad Homburg.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Panorama Bad Homburg.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to make work for idle bots, we thank you for not indicating the source and copyright status. Images need to have an annoying tag applied to the image description page indicating the imaginary copyright status of the image so that everyone will be fooled into thinking the picture is free. This daft yet easy-to-understand method of perpetrating fraud prevents potential re-users of the images from knowing what they are in for from someone's bloodthirsty lawyer if they do anything with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is a mindless notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, feel free to pin all possibilities on a dart board, take a shot, and choose the one that you hit. 04:06, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello, if you want to use more photos of the German Wikipedia in the future, plese move them to the commons instead of only copying them - or take care of the license. I accidentally found some of my photos here in en:WP. At least the CC-licence prescribes that the author must always be mentioned. Please consider that in the future. Thanks.

You don't have to change the images, I will move them - and add a description (German as well as English).

Apostrophe

From Apostrophe: "In general, a good practice is to follow whichever spoken form is judged best: Boss's shoes, Mrs. Jones' hat (or Mrs. Jones's hat, if that spoken form is preferred). In many cases, both spoken and written forms will differ between people." I was always taught that a possessive ending in a hard 's' (or 'z', if you prefer, like 'Charles') takes just an apostrophe to form its possessive. (So titles such as Bridget Jones's Diary (in my opinion) should have been written Bridget Jones' Diary — but then this may have been deliberate to reflect the quirks of the character.) However, obviously everyone has a preference on this so I'm not getting into an edit war — except to state that I think "Holmes's" is an awkward way of saying something that could be communicated with one fewer letter (and indeed syllable). Thus we'll have to agree to disagree. Chris 42 10:53, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Skate

The changes (or "dickering") on Skate (disambiguation) would all have been explained had I not had a typo in my edit comment. The changes were all consistent (if I remember correctly) with WP:MOSDAB. Is there anything in particular you thought was inappropriate? (if you'd rather answer here than my talk page, go ahead). John (Jwy) 06:08, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

It was perfectly clear the way it was, and there was no reason to separate out the fish as though that were the word's primary meaning (I hardly think it is).Kelisi 15:32, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
I didn't see this comment here before I went to work on the page again. My apologies. If Skate is not the appropriate primary meaning, then the article should be renamed to Skate (fish) and the dab page should be Skate. But if Skate is the fish article, WP:MOSDAB is written to take into account that someone who gets the Skate (disambiguation) is probably not looking for the fish: they entered Skate and clicked away. Putting it on top gets it "out of the way" so the reader can find the real target quicker. John (Jwy) 04:52, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Kelisi — thanks for your correction on the self-organized criticality and power law pages. Paama article, maps

Yes, I did notice all the maps you've added (to the articles I've written and many, many others), they're very helpful, thanks a lot. I don't remember what my source was for saying Halos was the largest city on Paama, but there do seem to be web references, not all copied from Wikipedia, that support that it is a city here. (See Google search). I think what happened is that when the village of Halos, Lopevi, was evacuated, the whole village, name and all, moved. However, it seems unlikely that it's the largest town. I will remove that sentence until I (or someone else) can recover a source for it. Rigadoun (talk) 15:25, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't know enough about the Great Firewall and measures to circumvent it to tell you, but I have heard of two main methods - using the Wikimedia secure server (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Main_Page) and using Tor. Unspecified source for Image:Schnauzbartstrengstensverboten.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Schnauzbartstrengstensverboten.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 04:06, 22 January 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jkelly 04:06, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

White Pass and Yukon Route map

Hi, Kelisi. Please advise me regarding the map you added to the article. Where did you get the map from? The route of the line is inaccurate north of Carcross. I copied the image, edited it using my computer's Paint program, uploaded it to Wikipedia and added it to the article. I left the original map in place. I expect my revised one to be deleted, even though it is more accurate, because I don't know the source of your map! If, of course, you added the rail route in purple to an existing (copyrighted?) map, then the map is still the original right-holder's map, but you "own" the addition of the original rail route line, and I changed what you added!

In any case, can we arrange it for the corrected map to be accepted on Wikipedia? GBC 04:13, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi. In case you were wondering, I got my wires crossed and mistakenly reverted your correction of the possessive s on this article. I spotted my boob and immediately recorrected my miscorrection of your correction. Sorry. Davidelit 06:08, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I've added the lat/long in the talk section for the Camp White Pine entry. I didn't want to put it in the wrong place. 74.102.111.240 16:28, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Commas

Hi. You have removed commas from numbers in several articles, citing SI in your edit summaries. I am afraid, the Manual of Style discourages application of SI in this case. Let me quote: "Large numbers may be divided up by commas every three places (e.g.: 2,900,000). (The SI/ISO notation style uses a non-breaking thin space instead of a comma, but that usage is uncommon in English and so may confuse readers)." Tankred 19:39, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Personal attack

I am concerned by the message you recently left on User:Fsecret's talk page. If you feel that his contributions to the diaper article were inappropiately sourced, then you are well within your rights to revert them. However, leaving an aggressive message on another editors talk page is not, I feel, acceptable. Yes, it is quite obvious that Fsecret has an interest in diaper fetishism and omorashi. However, I do not believe that his contributions are invalid or that he does not deserve to edit Wikipedia because of that. I'm not particularly bothered by the deletion of the diaper discipline information; it looked out of place in the article and I wasn't quite sure where to put it. However, what Fsecret wrote was clearly based directly on the source and not personal fantasy. He also included another, clearly non-fetish related, source which was later deleted due to copyright issues. Take a look at it <Paul Sims, "Primary school bottle-feeds 10-year-olds because they 'missed out on love'", Daily_Mail, 03/03/2007 13:43 24.6.228.89 06:53, 27 July 2007 (UTC)>

May I remind you that diaper fetishism and infantilism have nothing to do with actual children, and that those who practise said fetishes wish to be or be treated like children, rather than having any actual interest in children themselves. Your personal disdain for the fetish does not entitle you to order other editors to leave Wikipedia. Coop41 03:33, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Link replaced per policy. The Daily Mail's terms read "You may not provide a link to this web site from any other web site without first obtaining Associated's prior written consent." 24.6.228.89 06:53, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

I apologise if I sounded patronising, but this sentence "[Your tastes] border on what might be considered unlawful even in some rather liberal countries" sounded as though you were acusing Fsecret of child abuse. I just wanted to make sure you understood that diaper fetishists do not condone that. As for the sources, I agree with you that they were not reliable enough to constitute inclusion in the article. That is why I have not reverted your edits; diaper discipline, regardless of how ethical or truthful it may be, does not have enough reliable sources to be notable.

One of my objections to your message was this; "WP is not the proper place to indulge your fetish." Just because he has a fetish does not mean he is "indulging" it by contributing information about diapers etc to Wikipedia. Other phrases such as "anyone who is serious" and "rubbish" also came across as rude and dismissive and are against the policy of WP:EQ. Also, your final statement "Now leave." came across as extremely agressive and is the main reason why I took offence. A simple mistake such as citing unreliable sources does not give you the right to decide that he cannot edit anymore. The site did claim it wasn't an AB/DL site, and whether you believe them or not is up to you, but you cannot blame someone else for believing what they read. Now, I'm sorry for making such a big deal out of this, but you could easily have removed the diaper discipline info without tracking down who contributed it and ordering them to leave. It was unnecessary. Coop41 05:18, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Stülpnagel.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 10:19, 5 August 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Alex Spade 10:19, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Kelisi, "Osama, I've had a look at your contributions, and it strikes me that your main purpose here at en:WP is to nominate images for deletion." that' right because I can't write an article. I use {{User en-1}} ;). You can see my contributions in ar.wiki. I write articles in ar.wiki. but here no. This is my point. IF I CAN WRITE AN ARTCLE I WILL DO THIS. I think "nominate images for deletion" are good contributions. Can I see you in #wikipedia-en ?--OsamaK 18:59, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
"willy-nilly" I add my reason I do not know if it's not really reason you can discretion it. I want to see you in IRC #wikipedia-en, let us talk about this thing if you want.--OsamaK 19:08, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Chinglish

Hi, thanks for your contributions to Chinglish. If I could raise a minor quibble with your photo of the regulations containing an expletive, the expletive isn't readily obvious in the mass of words. Do you mind editing the photo to focus on the part containing the expletive, or perhaps to highlight its location? Thanks. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 23:42, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

If you feel the image illustrates more than the "shit" part, it might be a good idea to change the caption to reference those aspects which you think it also illustrates. I am going to take the liberty of thumbnailing the image in the interim, because it is taking up a disproportionately large portion of the screen. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 06:20, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Some request for Vietnam map!

Hi guy!

I think you should make some bigger points for top 5 largest and principal cities in Vietnam are:

    1. Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh
    2. Hà Nội
    3. Đà Nẵng (central)
    4. Hải Phòng (northern coast)
    5. Cần Thơ (Mekong Delta)

SA map

Right, 1. Gobbelaars river apparently does not exist and appears to be the Olifants. 2. Elends river should be Elands (like the antelope). 3. Matabele (town) must be Matatiele. 4. KwaZulu (town) appears to be Tabankulu. 5. Stanger's new name is KwaDukuza. I was worried about some other names like Mdansane, rather than Madantsane, but those indeed appear to be the new spellings. If some other rivers on the map are named I think it would be a further improvement, as it illustrates the List of rivers of South Africa page. JMK (talk) 13:39, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Solved the mystery of the Grobbelaars river, note the 'r'. It is a small tributary of the Olifants. The latter and not the first is shown on your map. The town Oudtshoorn is spread along both banks of the small tributary, close to the confluence. JMK (talk) 09:41, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:NHSbadge.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:NHSbadge.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 23:08, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Proxy

I blocked a couple hundred proxies, so I do not know exactly which one you are referring to. Also, there should be no way that a pre-existing block on the IP would have been overwritten by the blocks that I had performed. You have to give me more information rather than the website from which you access the proxy, because not even that is helping me at the moment.—Ryūlóng (竜龍) 22:10, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Before I unblock the IP, I think that the Secure Server might help. You will be able to access it directly with your IP.—Ryūlóng (竜龍) 06:14, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
